Guru Nanak Dev Ji had been dubbed divana or otherworldly and was regarded by his father Mehta Kallu Ji as good for nothing . When saddus would come to their house asking for food Guru Ji would empty the contents of the kitchen to them. In those days the family jewels and gold and money would be hidden in large earthenware pots call “parrollas” in amongst the flour or atta. Once when a saddu came asking for flour Guru Ji said ”rather then going from door to door just take all you want from here.” When the saddu said there were gold and jewels in the atta Guru Ji told him to take them as well.

Mehta Kallu asked Guru Ji what he would like to do now as he had tried various things and he did not persue any of them. Mehta Kallu Ji said “Why don’t you graze the cattle” to which Guru Ji agreed. He took the cattle out into the fields.

Rai Bullar had warned all the people of the village not to venture over to an overgrown part of the land as there lived a very large sapp. This snake was known to strike at animals and men if disturbed and could take down a large buffalo. So no one ever ventured into the area which had large overgrown grass and was generally unkept. Guru Ji led the cattle into the exact spot and while the buffaloes grazed in the hot sun Guru Ji lay down on one side and fell asleep. Rai Bullar was passing through this area on his horse accompanied by his servants on foot. They reported that there was cattle in the overgrown bush and Rai Bullar became very angry. He had told everyone to stay away as the disturbed snake was very dangerous. As he dismounted his horse and waded into the undergrowth he saw Guru Nanak Ji asleep with a huge snake hovering over. Rai Bullars heart dropped and was very saddened, he thought the snake had done its deed. But just then he say Guru Ji move in his sleep. He was still alive, Rai bullar was overjoyed but still there was the tricky situation of the snake ready to strike. As he stood and watched he noticed that as Guru Ji had moved in his sleep the snake had also moved to bring the shadow over Guru Ji’s face. When Guru Ji moved again, so did the snake, almost as if the snake was covering Nanaks face from the fierce sun. Rai Bullar saw what was happeneing and realised that this was no ordinary soul. He placed his head on Guru Ji’s feet.

When Mehta Kallu Ji stepped out of his house and looked over he saw Rai Bullar walking up holding the reigns of his horse and Guru Ji riding the horse. “Oh no” Kallu Ji “ said to the approaching land lord “ he hasn’t won you over as well with his fancy talking, you are on foot while my son is on your horse.” Rai Bullar assured Kallu Ji that he was more then happy to have Nanak on the horse while he walked on foot, “your son is no ordinary soul” he sais “he is rubbi-roop , no matter how much lose you suffer Kallu Ji just take whatever you want from my home.”

Alas the wool was pulled over Kallu Ji’s eyes all is life and could he not see the pure soul shining through Guru Nanak Dev Ji, only in later life did he recognise who Guru Ji really was and was filled with great Bhairag.
