When maharaj went to meddina and spoke about the Karni Nama its said he was dressed in a blue Chola and also wore shaster. You have to remember if there is one light in all our Gurus it wasnt just one or two Gurus that Knew Shatser Vidiya Shaster Vidiya started with Guru Nanak Dev Je and as Guru Je was the First Nihang and Nihangs are to be Shaster Daree he would of Carried a Shaster(s)

Baba Trilok Singh Nihang said in katha that Guru Nanak was the 1st Nihang Singh. As veer ji has said above Guru Sahib wore Blue bana on his travels to mecca/medina, this is also stated in Bhai Gurdas ji Vaaran. As for Guru Sahib having a kirpan, according to Baba Trilok Singh Nihang, Guru Ji did have a small kirpan when on his travels. Guru Nanak in his 10th form gave us a command to keep shaster so anything that went before becomes kind of academic.

Kindly visit the museum of Takhat Harmandir Ji Patna Sahib, there is a sword belonging to first master is kept there. This was obtained from a Brahmin family of Orrisa, to whome perhaps first master gave that, they use to worship this sword for generations before it came to Patna Sahib. Next Guru also started Akhara or coaching centre for fight.

Pray Truth for all and say Satsriakaal!
Dear all!
Guru Naanak Dev Jee did not use the word 'kirpaan' once in any of His Hymns.
The fourth Guru, Guru Raamdaas Jee used the word 'kirpaan' once.

Generally arms were kept by many saints like the sufis and hindu monks even by sufi monks jesus himself taught it because every holy man in the past has had to defend himself.

I think Guru Ji probably did have a kirpan with him but he was peaceful and the world at the time was different. He didn't have to use it. But as Sikhi progressed Hukam came from Akal to use shastars.

This is what I believe to be true, if a Sikh knows otherwise, please correct me.
Guru Nanak Dev Ji carried a barsha and tegha with him during all Udhasian and there is still a kirpan or tegha of Guru Nanak Dev Ji at a Gurudwara in Punjab. Guru Nanak Dev Sahib passed the vidhiya of shastars to Baba Budha Ji and Baba Budha Ji passed it all the way to Guru Hargobind Sahib.
