Your 100% right, mahraj has indeed said that plants, tress etc also are living beings. It is also written in panth pracchin Granth that Banda Singh Bahadur could talk to plants & communicate with them.

First Mahalla Guru Nanak: Look, and see how the sugar-cane is cut down. After cutting away its branches, its feet are bound together into bundles, and then, it is placed between the wooden rollers and crushed. What punishment is inflicted upon it! Its juice is extracted and placed in the cauldron; as it is heated, it groans and cries out. And then, the crushed cane is collected and burnt in the fire below. Nanak: come, people, and see how the sweet sugar-cane is treated! ||2||

Centuries before these scientific studies our Gurus have already enlightened us about the 84 lakh joons; plants are one of them.

Akaal Purkh, when He made creations divided it into 84 lakh species of living things. The sages of ancient times accounted for the species as follows:
30 lakh kinds of Plants in the plant kingdom
27 lakh kinds of Insects & Reptiles
14 lakh kinds of Birds
9 lakh kinds of Creatures living in water
4 lakh kinds of animals, gods, goddesses, jinns, ghosts, and human-beings.

We are all prisoners in the vast prison of this world because of our Karm(s). We can escape from it only when our soul realizes the Lord. The gift of human life has been granted to us to enable us to escape from the cycle of recurring births and deaths. It is only in the human form that one has the unique distinctions and honor of meeting Akaal Purkh / Lord / God.
