English term for dharan is " navel dislocation".
Dharan and mode are two different things.
And exercise with round circle towel under belly button works - mentioned above.
For kodee also the bibiji did right way.thats how my mother do when I get kodee.

Nabhi Parikashan or Checking ones Navel Position What is Nabhi ?

Nabhi in other colloquial Indian terms for navel. It is a scar in the abdomen in the attachment site of umbical cord. There are details of Nabhi and its importance in the web. So we are not going to repeat what you can find elsewhere. Here is a very good article on Wikipedia on the subject

Ancient Indian, Unani(greed) , Chinese & Japanese system of medicine recognizes the Nabhi or navel as one of the most important physiological determinant for a healthy body. It is through this end point through which a fetous is supplied with food and life giving nutrients. In yogic parlance, we can call the centre for ‘Jeevani Shakti’ (life force). In modern medical science, the umbical cord is being preserved for gene therapy not only for the baby but his or her siblings too.

In spiritual context of yoga, nabhi is the third chakra of the subtle body. It is the nucleus of our body which makes us peaceful and generous. When enlightened by the Kundalini, it expresses as righteousness and inner sense of morality, and it gives us complete balance at all levels in our life. The ultimate aim of Yoga is ‘yog’ or assimilation of an individual to the almighty i.e. the superconciousness. Body is then considered to be important carrier towards this aim. As such in yoga practice a healthy nabhi is of paramount importance. Healthy nabhi means healthy body which can be attuned for higher spiritual practice.

At Devarshiyoga pith, nabhi parikshan or navel checkup is given special importance along with swar vigyan in therapeutic yoga as well its regular practice. It is one of the first thing we check. According to many practitioners of yoga, ayurveda or unani medicine, if a patient has displaced nabhi or navel, the prescribed medicine or the asanas will not show its effect. Our founder Shri Vijay Yogi in his 30 long years of practicing yoga and naturopathy has cured many patients who complained of no relief through prolonged medication and extensive diagnosis. So in case you are a person who is undergoing such predicament, just check you nabhi or navel and fix it. You will feel a first hand experience to this wonderful ancient concept. We now explain nabhi displacement.

Nabhi or Navel Displacement

A concept unrecognized by modern medical science is the concept of ‘moving navel’. Just as a misalignment may occur within the spinal cord, so a misalignment of the navel and stomach muscles (rectus abdominus) may also occur. Navel or Nabhi is also called dharan. In northern india there is a comman prevelant saying ‘dharan sarakna’ when one is having loose motion. ‘Sarakna’ means slow movement or displacement. In most cases the navel will take a move in either an upward or downward direction, sometimes a sideways movement is also noticeable- The displacement is directly connected with the navel, nerves, stomach muscles and movement of prana, and will affect each of these in some manner. The causes may be activities like picking up heavy objects, climbing a tree or wall, jumping form heights and landing on uneven surfaces, slipping, and sexual activity.

Symptoms or Indication of displaced nabhi

i) This problem is said to occur more in women than men and may produce excessive or scanty bleeding during periods. Painful periods is one the symptoms.
ii) Sudden and continued constipation
iii) Vomiting or feeling of nausea.
iv) Diarrhea
v) Pain in the back, thighs, calves.

Nabhi Parikshan or Checking the navel

• The misalignment is be detected by comparing the distance between each of two longest toe of both the feets and the navel centre. The person is made to lie down on a flat surface facing upwards in shava asana pose. Next one long string is taken. The distance beetween the nabhi and right foot longest toe is measured. The same process is repeated for the left longest toe. If there is a difference in the length of these two measurements, it indicates a shift in the navel position. However, when measuring the position with string, care should be taken to ensure that the body is correctly aligned.

• The original position can also be detected, in some people, by feeling for a pulse in and around the navel. Lie on a flat surface – facing upwards, and press your thumb in the navel. If there is a throbbing sensation under the navel, it means the pulse and navel are together; the position is correct.

• In men, the measurement can be taken from the right, and left nipples, to the navel. If disparity in distance is there, it indicates the displacement of navel

Yoga for a displaced navel

Correct Yogic treatment, for a short period, says 3 to 4 days is seen to eliminate this trouble. Basically asanas which give equal backward stretch to the rectus abdominus muscles. Asanas, such as Uttanpadasana, Bhujangasana, Matsyasana, Kandharasana, Supta vajrasana, Chakrasana, Dhanurasana, Makarasana, Naukasana, and Matsyakridasana, will give relief. Shankhaprakshalana asanas can also be effective. No forward bending Asanas can be practiced, except Shashankasana and Marjariasana, in some cases. After the cure, practice of these Asanas should continue, so that stomach and back muscles strengthen and prevent further recurrence. The patient should take light food for 3-4 days.

One last point to add is that even if a person does not show sign of displaced navel, he or she should undergo nabhi parikhshan for couple of initial yoga classes. Regular practice of yoga keeps one naval health.

Is your Dharan in Balance?

Posted on

November 14, 2012

If you are from an Indian background then it is likely you will be familiar with the concept of Dharan being out of balance.  What is Dharan?  Where exactly is it in the body?  What is the purpose of this dharan? How do you know it is out of balance?  Why is it if you ask a doctor they have never heard of it? How exactly can you balance the Dharan if it does not even physically exist?

Also referred to as Nabhi, Navel centre and Solar Plexus, the Dharan is centred at the belly button.  It is not a physical body part that can be seen or dissected, but an energy centre.  Its effect can be observed by assessing the body and feeling for its pulse.  When it is centred in place, you experience good physical and emotional health and a sense of vitality.  Problems occur when it is out of balance.

Your dharan may be misaligned if you are experiencing diarrhoea; vomiting or nausea; constipation; pain in back, thighs and calves; menstrual problems; low energy.  The imbalance in Dharan can occur if a sudden movement has occurred in the body such as a fall or walking on uneven surface.

There are several ways of balancing Dharan.  Here we will look at some self techniques that you can do to help yourself.

Checking for Balance

One way to check for imbalance is to relax on your back and press your belly button with the tips of all your fingers and thumb of one hand brought together.  If you can feel a throbbing sensation under the navel, it means your navel centre is balanced.

Raised Leg Pose (uttanpadasana)

If your navel centre is imbalanced, then you can do raised leg pose (uttanpadasana) to help bring it t to balance.

Relax, lying on your back. Keep your legs straight and feet together.  Breathing in, lift both legs very slowly straight up in the air, bring them up to 90 degrees and hold them up for 30 seconds up to one minute. Bring them back down to the floor even more slowly while breathing out. Make sure your legs are kept straight throughout and focus on your breath and your lower abdomen throughout. Repeat this 5 to 10 times.  Done daily, this exercise keeps the navel centre strong.

This posture should be avoided if you are suffering from high blood pressure, Hernia or had recent abdominal surgery.  It should also be avoided if you have lower back pain or had recent surgery of your back or spine, as it gives pressure to your spinal cord and lower back.  This yoga pose should also not be practiced in pregnancy or menstruation.

Apaan MuThe effect of the uttanpadassa in helping to balance the navel centre is increased if you also hold your hands in Apaan Mudra.  Apaan mudra is formed when you touch the tips of middle two fingers with the thumb and keep all remaining fingers straight.  This can be done for 10 to 15 minutes on a daily basis to keep navel balanced.

These are just two of my favourite self treatment methods for balancing the navel.  However, there are several other methods including massaging the navel, balancing the pelvic and other yoga postures which can help.  If problems persist despite self treatment it is worth seeing a practitioner who has knowledge in this field and can help you achieve optimum health and vitality.

Ok so i am getting really fed up of our community being so narrow minded and superstitious with people and health conditions.
An aunty at the gurdwara told me about a lady that deals with tharn/kodee issues. I couldn't remember which store she said, so went in the first one, and was not that one. Then the second one also not that one, where i should find this lady.

Its not that i got the wrong stores that their reaction hurt me. Its how i felt so belittled and the way i was looked at by them as if they were going to catch something off me. I never felt so low and by our punjabi women made to feel inferior or outcast.
All i asked was if they knew of lady that dealt with tharn/kodee issues.
One lady even looked at my stomach with disgust.
And this is 2012?

HI i have recently had this problem... it is not a condition understood in western science although anyone can suffer from it...they just dont know whats happening to them. The closest way to understand what has happened is to first understand the chakras (energy centeres of the body) chinese medicine (accupressure) also can help with the problem. it is a displacement in of your solar plexus. there are many symptoms which normally occur after lifting heavy objects on an emply gut. your powerhouse (tummy muscle) controls most movements in the body and in case od dharan/taran it has no strengh. if the solar plexus moves up its can cause problems in all the charkras upwards ie heart, third eye etc. Some of the symptoms of dhuran include confusion, low blood pressure, constipation or diarrhoea, depression, bloated tummy, loss of appetite, pain in abdomen and or lower back, spasms in legs, feet arms. symptoms can vary depending on the location of where the solar plexus has moved to. The only phical explanation i can describe is that under your diaphram is a set of nerves that have been disturbed or strained which causes the pain. I had a treatment alond with prayer and some rituals to prevent it from happening in the future from a guru in London, Gants Hill. The gurus wife did the procedure for me two days ago and i already feel 80% better, although i need a second treatment to fuuly rid myself of this problem.
