Lohri has nothing to do with Sikhs.

Sikhs are not meant to celebrate manmat cultural events against Gurmat.

The only Sikhs that celebrate Lohri + do bhangra + dance around a fire are those who support BadalBJP + Congress.

Lohri is a cultural/seasonal festival of Punjab.Did you ever hear Robinhood character Dulla bhatti who lived in Sandal bar area of Punjab?

This festival is not a festival of sharab only for those who have sharab in their head. Dulla bhatti was fighting Moghal invaders and restoring daughters of Punjab to their parents getting them free from Moghal harems.

This festival is there for centuries in Punjab much before sprouting of Badal/BJP/comgress and will continue to be there after demise of such forces.

History of LOHRI

SUNDAR MUNDARIYE….HO!
The Lohri leitmotif, revisited

There is a large tract of semi-arid terrain lying between the rivers Chenab and Ravi called the Saandal Bar. (It now falls in the districts of Sheikhupura and Faislabad, in Pakistan).

The people of this area were known to provide the stiffest opposition to the Mughals. They never paid any taxes; rather, they openly defied the authorities and indulged in looting the royal caravans and treasures.

'Saandal', a warlord of Bhatti Rajput clan led these tribals. Prince Jahangir, the heir apparent, fired with zeal to prove his prowess carried out campaigns to consolidate the Mughal authority in the region. He captured and executed Saandal and his son, Farid. Their skins were peeled off and hung at the Delhi gate of the Fort of Lahore to instil a sense of fear amongst the rebels.

However, the son of Farid, Abdullah or Dullah as he is fondly called, remained unfazed and continued his defiant activities. Dullah earned notoriety in the eyes of authorities. He, like Robin Hood, looted wealthy landlords and Imperial officers and distributed the booty amongst the poor. He came to be regarded as a father figure for the distressed and oppressed. and became a living legend, embodiment of the chivalrous and secular, socio-cultural character of the region.

Dullah was the contemporary of yet another Super Human, Poet Divine, Sri Guru Arjan Dev JI, the Fifth Sikh Guru, who sacrificed his life at the altar of humanity at Lahore.

It is believed that Dullah had restored the prestige of an innocent girl whose modesty was outraged by a Mughal general. Dullah had adopted this girl as his daughter and arranged her marriage in the Jungles of 'Saandal Bar'. As there was no priest nearby to chant the Vedic Hymns and solemnise the marriage Dullah lit a bonfire and people, who by then, were also free from sowing wheat crop, gathered in strength. They composed an impromtu song: Sundari Mundariye……
The bride and the groom were asked to take pheras of the bonfire as people sang this hilarious song.

(The 'ho's are in chorus…..)

Sunder mundriye ho! ( Oh, you pretty lass)
Tera kaun vicaharaa ho! (Who is your protector, you pitiable one? )
Dullah Bhatti walla ho! (There's this man called Dullah, from Village Bhatti)
Dullhe di dhee vyayae ho! (Dullah's getting her married as his own daughter)
Ser shakkar payee ho! (He gave 1 kg sugar!)
Kudi da laal pathaka ho! (The girls is wearing a red suit!)
Kudi da saalu paatta ho! (But her shawl is torn!)
Saalu kaun samete ho! (Who will stitch her shawl?)
Chacha gaali dese ho! (Her Uncle is scolding her)
Chacha choori kutti ho! (The uncle made choori{a Punjabi dish}!)
zamidara lutti ho! (The landlords ate it!)
Zamindaar sudhaye ho! (Dullah gave the landlords lots more to eat!)
Ginn-ginn bhole aaye ho! (Lots of innocent guys came)
Ek bhola reh gaya! (One innocent boy got left behind)
Sipahee pakad ke lai gaya! (The police arrested him!)
Sipahee ne mari itt! (The policeman hit him with a brick!)
Phannve ro te phannve pit! (Now, you may cry or howl!)
Sanoo de de lohri te teri jeeve jodi (Give us our Lohri & may you live long as a couple!)

Til (Sesame seeds) and Rorhi (a form of sweet jaggery in Punjabi) are meant to keep the body warm. These two terms Til+ Rorhi combined to form Tilrorhi, which eventually was corrupted to ----"Lohri"

THE HISTORY OF LOHRI
(For shardavaan gurmukh piare only)
This sakhi which gets classed as bramanvaad by nastik people is actually an eye opener. It explains how the lords true bhagats have always been saved throughout the ages from evil tryant rulers when taking on governments. In this case father and son.

The festival of lohri originates back to the times of satyug. The king at that time was harnakash. We read this tukk each evening in sampooran rehraas sahib "harnakash dusht har maarea prehlaad taraeya" meaning dusht harnakash was killed by god and bhagat prehlad was saved.

As many kings get hankari so did harnakash. He wanted everyone to chant his name as the lord and not the name of hari or raam. (Mahraj ji in Sri dasam granth sahib ji states this sakhi in depth within the chapters of chaubees avtar under narsingh avtar - katha done by mahapurkh sant baba jarnail singh ji khalsa bhindranwale 14th mukhi damdami taksal).
As harnakash wiped the lords name wherever written with jalle harnakash thalle harnakash etc meaning harnakash is everywhere, his son prehlad (bhagat prehlad) didnt agree with this and at the age of around 5 years he would chant the name of the lord and not his father. At school he would also write JALLE HARI THALLE HARI URRE HARRI BANNE HARRI instead of his fathers name. His teachers began to worry and told his father that his own son is teaching the other kids to chant the lords name and not harnakash.

One day harnakash saw this and politely asked his son why he isnt reciting his fathers name. When prehlad refused to chant his fathers name as the lord the fight had begun to eliminate bhagat prehlad.
Harnakash and his army resorted to many different techniques to finish prehlad. Firstly they lit a fire and heated coals then made him walk across it, they tried to drown him, starve him, threw him off a moutain but maharaj ji kept saving him. They decided that harnakashs sister holka has a fire proof blanket which was given to her as a blessing from god and that they would light a bonfire and holi would take her nephew prehlad with her into the fire. They thought that prehlad would burn and holka would survive due to the blanket.
At this point the god fearing people prayed to akaal purkh to save the small boy prehlad from the horrendous torture being inflicted upon him by the his father the king and his dusht army. This is when the festival of lohri started. Even today people remember the time when those in satyug prayed for prehlads well being and they still do for any newborn today. Any excuse to goto the gurdwara sahib and attain maharaj sahibs darshan on any day or festival is always chardi kala.

On this day of lohri harnakash and his dusht army lit the bonfire and it burnt for approx 2 months. It was on holi which falls in march that the fire went out and they found bhagat prehlad playing with the ashes and not even the remains of holka could be found. After seeing bhagat prehlad still alive harnakash pulled out his kirpan and was going to kill him but out of the pillar a half man half lion called narsingh appeared and saved prehlad bhagat. Narsingh was akaal purkh in the form of a nimmitt avtar. This jang lasted 8 days and 8 nights and narsingh finished off dusht harnakash by ripping him using his nails. This sakhi is written in sri guru granth sahib ji and written in depth in sri dasam granth sahib ji which sant bhindranwale have done katha of which we will make available on our soundcloud @jagowalajatha.

I have written this sakhi very briefly and missed out some parts due to this but i will write it up fully at some point leading onto the significance of holla mahalla. If anyone feels this has been made up then please read tukks in gurbani and listen to mahapursh sant jarnail singh bhindranwale jis katha.

WRITE UP - SIMRAN SINGH

Wow. People do love copy and pasting here.

You can research history till you're blue in the face when the only thing that matters is the present. In the present, as I mentioned above, the only 3 things that Lohri signifies to 99% of all of Punjab's Sikhs, is:

  1. The changing of the weather (for the good)
  2. The eating of spinach
  3. the asking for / the receiving and the eating of : Monkey Nuts.

Wouldn't it be nice if someone could copy and then paste a long detailed explanation for those 3 things. They won't though, because it is human nature to copy and paste the easiest thing to find on the internet. For the things that really matter you really gotta put your research face on.

People are becoming really nutty gritty , Dont know what my friend means with monkety nuts and eating spinach ? on this occassion , thats really news !!!!!!

The Fact is that , all over India , the occassion is celebrated under Different names , In North it is Lohri , in western they call it Uttrayan , in south it is Pongal , The real occassion is , The sun from this Day onwards starts spreading Rays in most part of earth specially on Northern Hemisphere reducing cold weather and the tfrom now onwards Hot season starts approaching . Sikh Religion & this Festival - No connection . But I have travelled in Most parts of India - Many think Dulla Bhatti was a Sikh ( How Funny ? our Community Leadership never Tries to Explain Themselves to the other Diaspora - More Funny , Even More Funny is notion expressed by someone here that Punjabi Culture is Sikh Culture )

Sad part of it all is that Sikhs from & of Punjab think that Sikhi is their Monopoly and only them have right to decide what is Sikhism . while Sikhi in the days of Guru Sahibaan was spread from Kashmir to Srilanka & Assam to Baghdad , Just give it a thought , do we want to make it a Universal Faith or Religion of Punjabi ppl only ? I may look going wayward from the topic , But I see Similar questions being raised every year at Lohri , then Holi , Baisakhi , and the Diwali , every year Answers & views expressed are Same , we remain carrying on business as usual , same wayforgetting within days the real message

SORRY WITH FOLDED HANDS IF SOMEONE FEELS I AM BEING TOO MUCH

GPS , You are making mistake in some lines , even giving wrong meanings

it is like this ( From where you are going wrong : -

ZIMIDAAR SADAYE ( The Land lords were called ) GIN GIN POLLE LAYE ( Dulla ordered to beat them with polla - a whip made of torn clothes

IKK POLA REH GIYA ( when one polla was remaining from the punishment SIPAHI PAKAD KE LAI GIYA ( Akbars army arrested dulla & took him away )

You serious ? :omg: Have you never been to rural Punjab on Lohri ?

But...you don't really have to go to rural Punjab on Lohri to understand what happens. Next year (on Lohri) stand outside any south Asian Grocery store in Southall, Vancouver or Toronto and watch as car loads of Sikhs arrive all day and fill their shopping carts with spinach and monkey nuts. Thats what we Punjabi (rural) Sikhs do.

Question is, how does a 'Punjabi' Sikh get to the adult stage of his life and still not know how we eat copious amounts of Saag and monkey nuts on lohri ?

    • yeh it's true, we shouldn't be lazy and need to learn jhatka shikaar. It doesn't help some of grew up in surrounding areas like Slough and Southall where everyone thought it was super bad for amrit dharis to eat meat, and they were following Sant babas and jathas, and instead the Singhs should have been normalising jhatka just like the recent world war soldiers did. We are trying to rectifiy this and khalsa should learn jhatka.  But I am just writing about bhog for those that are still learning rehit. As I explained, there are all these negative influences in the panth that talk against rehit, but this shouldn't deter us from taking khanda pahul, no matter what level of rehit we are!
    • How is it going to help? The link is of a Sikh hunter. Fine, but what good does that do the lazy Sikh who ate khulla maas in a restaurant? By the way, for the OP, yes, it's against rehit to eat khulla maas.
    • Yeah, Sikhs should do bhog of food they eat. But the point of bhog is to only do bhog of food which is fit to be presented to Maharaj. It's not maryada to do bhog of khulla maas and pretend it's OK to eat. It's not. Come on, bro, you should know better than to bring this Sakhi into it. Is this Sikh in the restaurant accompanied by Guru Gobind Singh ji? Is he fighting a dharam yudh? Or is he merely filling his belly with the nearest restaurant?  Please don't make a mockery of our puratan Singhs' sacrifices by comparing them to lazy Sikhs who eat khulla maas.
    • Seriously?? The Dhadi is trying to be cute. For those who didn't get it, he said: "Some say Maharaj killed bakras (goats). Some say he cut the heads of the Panj Piyaras. The truth is that they weren't goats. It was she-goats (ਬਕਰੀਆਂ). He jhatka'd she-goats. Not he-goats." Wow. This is possibly the stupidest thing I've ever heard in relation to Sikhi.
    • Instead of a 9 inch or larger kirpan, take a smaller kirpan and put it (without gatra) inside your smaller turban and tie the turban tightly. This keeps a kirpan on your person without interfering with the massage or alarming the masseuse. I'm not talking about a trinket but rather an actual small kirpan that fits in a sheath (you'll have to search to find one). As for ahem, "problems", you could get a male masseuse. I don't know where you are, but in most places there are professional masseuses who actually know what they are doing and can really relieve your muscle pains.
