If you memorize it you are more deeply in the meanings as its requires more of your attention.. or is easier to understand somehow. I know this is not good advice because not all of the Sangat is approving Namdharis so sorry but I thought it was relevent so.. Baba Ram Singh in his rehatnama or hukhnama i forgot what is called but he says to memorize bani and recite it from memory and he also says to do kirtan daily so if you could take that advice I earnestly it will help you as a Gursikh.. I apologize for not finding a better example but that is the most relateable one that came up in my head.

Don't listen to that so called Granthi. He's probably a missionary. All they do is break people's Shardha. Jaap of Gurbani should be done, the more the better. Our Mann is polluted from many janams. The only way to clean it is through Naam Simran and Gurbani.

Dear brother,

What is a missionary?

Khalsa ji I have been struggling with this for over a year now and its getting to my head now. What's the difference between reading bani outloud and reaciting it in your Mann or surfing? I asked a local granthi and he said straightup why do you want to read it over and over again? That just broke my shardha. Maybe a Gurmukh bibeki Singh or singhni can give me a productive answer. Thank you

Vaheguru ji ka khalsa vaheguru ji ki fateh*Surti

Waheguru ji ka khalsa

Waheguru ji ki fateh

It is a matter of belief 'Nem' or 'Prem' or Both.

I had a similar query long time back, have a look

If one is reciting gurbani or gurbani mantra over and over again to still the mind or dhian on shabad dhun (Dhun mein Dhyan, Dhyan Mein Janya ) in shabad surat thats a different story and its totally acceptable.

However, if one is reciting gurbani over and over again as a robot, only as sense of duty with preconditioning (for very beginning is fine to build concentration but not intermediate or long term) without prem (unconditional love without any conditions), without receptivity-openness to receive, bairaag, without bibek- tyaag of bad attributes panj chor and adapting sat(honesty/intergrity-truth), santokh, gyan, vichar can easily be turned into dogma/karam kaand which is condemned in gurbani and also in gurbani by sri dasam patsah- akaal ustat.

If the unmutterable Lord can be realised by the repetition of His Name, then a small bird called pudana repeats "Tuhi, Tuhi" (Thou art everyting) all the time.

In Soraj parkash granth there is parsang but once - sikhs did benti to sri guru gobind singh ji by saying- we have been reciting gurbani every day for long hours- how come its not bringing change compare to other singhs.

Guru maharaj addresses to sangat. Gurbani is like a medicine. Patient need to take medicine totally inside before it could do its effect. Those who have complaints blame yourself because you are actually not taking gurbani as medicine inside but rather doing gargles of medicine and spiting out. Hence, having no effect .!! Similarly its also like - one is wearing full shield of egoic rigid mindset of preconditioning/closeness yet expecting gurbani arrow to pierce one heart without initial effort of an seeker.

Gurbani is like liquid medicine, it will only take effect when patient takes mediciation fully inside not just gargle the medicine and spit it out.

We have moral duty to discourage that kind of religious dogmatic mindset or mentality crept into our panth. Path of Sikhi is double edge sword, very very slipperly slope and have many land marks, if landmarks are not perceived in right manner with bibek, child like love and bairaag and in context of development stages that could itself become a road block, anything and everything could be road block. Basically, flow of human consciousness connected with gurbani (free from egoic mind) in sikhi should be spontaneous and natural and fluid as very nature of gurbani

In layman terms, be honest/have integrity/sincerity- sat with yourself..it goes long long way.. if you cannot witness yourself progressing-seeing overall peace in your nature, diving in dephtness of gurbani and start naturally having sat gun attributes listed above naturally and naturally rising above from panj chor while doing nitnem or following any maryada for that matter than there is a big problem.... not with the ritual itself but with your perception itself while you are engaging in maryada..there is a big problem..get up from asan, drop everything (i meant not literally) yeah drop everything, go humbly to dhan dhan dhan sri guru granth sahib to ardas and take hukamnama, if its meant to be- guru maharaj himself will destroy all the doubts inside you, free you from shackles from idolized form of shariat one themselves are created and is now an trap..!!

Thank you for all the replies. Maybe I should have made the post a bit more specific. For example if one was to do paath reciting out loud and at another instance do it with surti...lets say you do nitnem by the two methods...which one would be accepted by Guru Ji? Paath done out loud or the paath done with surti.

Because personally I started to do paathby surti and I started to hear stuff and later on I ran into a video that said if you hear stuff then those are the naads that are heard by radhaswamis and that the Gurmat way is to recite it out loud and hear it with your ears...im so confused on this because im told that first you do Jaap out loud and then with surti...it seems the same thing to me. Maybe someone understands this issue and can help me distinguish what is the right way.

And also in a katha by Giani Thakur Singh Ji he says that if you hear Vaheguru along with other dhunis then you're on the right path...if you only hear dhunis then he said no not that way.

If you feel comfortable and more in flow with doing it internally, then this is what you should do.

If you start hearing the naads, then this is good and confirmation that you are proceeding the correct way.

BTW. are you talking about doing gurbani paath or doing jap of gurmantar or shabad ?

You can recite it out loud or in your mind. Ever felt a shabad playing in your head without any direct efforts? as you go deeper Gurbani will just take over. Your mind will be colored with it and Gurbani will play in your mind without any effort for hours, days and weeks. Let go and surrender to it.

What about those that are deaf is there Gurbani recitation in vain. Look to Guru Sahib for instructions forget these fake cats. They be filling there bellies with the beast. Look to Bhai Gurdas ji Vaars. Look to real kathavachaks who lived what they preached and knew the correct path like Sant Gurbachan Singh ji. This is kalyug. Gurbani tells us in your mind enshrine Vaheguru, with your tongue repeat his bani, with your ears listen to his Shabad. All are approved. Personally when I take the shabad to the mind and let the mind recite it. Thats when everything becomes one and peace is felt. Sometimes repeating something out loud brings more meaning because once said the ears catch it and the mind has a clearer picture. Yet it all goes back to the mind changing for the better.

I dont know how young you are but take others advice with your shield up. Also go back to your Guru. All the time spent searching for the diamond in Gurbani cannot be evaluated. Human advice with different titles Giani, Baba, Sant, scholar, bhai sahib, prof, etc is only good as his or her understanding.

One person who I keep getting told to meet is Giani Mohan Singh ji Brindranwale. Hes done some true searching and reached heights we cannot realize. He has one or two kathas on youtube. Search him up and see if he has done any katha on this topic.
