Sri Guru Nanak Dev Jee is Gurmat. There is no Gurmat without Sri Guru Nanak Dev Jee.

Before the Bhagats came to Gurmat, Bhagat Ramanand Jee was the Guru of most of the Bhagats. The transformation happened because they all came to the Sharan of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji. This is supported by the pre Singh Sabha era literature of the Sikhs.

What do some of us actually understand by the term 'Gurmat' ?

Was it an invention by Guru Nanak ji ?

What about the actaul timelines of the bhagats and the reference in op ?

I'm not poking these questions at you veerji, it's just that sometimes we think we understand some concept and then someone tells us something else which in turn ends up throwing the whole understanding out the window !

I think we waste so much spiritual energy going around trying to define and scrutinize the outer cover of a book, whilst completely losing the essence of the inner contents.

I don't know if I know the answers or not, but I have to often ask myself ''is knowing this answer going to help me progress to nijh ghar/dargah/sachkhand/supreme abode of consciousness ?

Is it helping in my progression to satguru ?

SIkhi involves a lot more vichaar and contemplation than most of us currently practice.

what about Bhagat Farid? He came in the 12th century, http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fariduddin_Ganjshakar

The Baba Farid Jee whose Bani is in Sri Guru Granth Sahib Jee is the one who was Gadhi Nasheen or custodian of the seat of the 12th century Baba Farid the Afghan. His name was Sheikh Ibrahim or Sheikh Brahm. Since he was the spiritual heir to the sufi order of Baba Farid of 12th century, he also used "Farid" as his Takhalus

Gurmat is mat of Satguru. And SatGuru can only be Sri Guru Nanak Dev Jee to Guru Gobind Singh Jee who then passed the Gur Gadhi to Sri Guru Granth Sahib Jee. The prevalent timeline of the Bhagats is incorrect and is based on Max Arthur Macauliff's research into the Bhagats. Before him, it was generally understood among the Sikhs that the Bhagats were contemporaries of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Jee who blessed them with Gurmat Naam. Among the Bhagat Ramanand Jee and his associated Bhagats, Bhagat Ramanand jee was the first to meet and receive Naam Dhaan from Guru Jee who then told Bhagat Kabir Jee about Sri Guru Nanak Dev Jee. Bhagat Kabir jee's enthusiasm knew no bounds upon hearing of the greatness of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Jee and at once went to Sri Guru jee for Naam Dheekya.

Nama Chimba, Kabir Julaha, Poore Gur Te Gat Paee.

They received the Gat ONLY upon meeting Pooran Guru, Sri Guru Nanak Dev Jee.

if you read the first paragraph it says,"Baba Farid, as he is commonly known, is heavily quoted in Sikh scriptures, giving him a unique place of honour within Sikhism" it also says he was born in Punjab, not Afghanistan. https://www.google.com/search?q=sheikh+farid&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en&client=safari this was my exact google search, it is possible he did meet Guru Nanak, but that would most likely be his Nirgun form (Waheguru or to him, Allah)

Also we should remember that Guru Gobind Singh Ji said that the Guru had 3 forms when speaking to Bhai NAND Lal:Nirgun, Sargun, and Gurshabad.

    • yeh it's true, we shouldn't be lazy and need to learn jhatka shikaar. It doesn't help some of grew up in surrounding areas like Slough and Southall where everyone thought it was super bad for amrit dharis to eat meat, and they were following Sant babas and jathas, and instead the Singhs should have been normalising jhatka just like the recent world war soldiers did. We are trying to rectifiy this and khalsa should learn jhatka.  But I am just writing about bhog for those that are still learning rehit. As I explained, there are all these negative influences in the panth that talk against rehit, but this shouldn't deter us from taking khanda pahul, no matter what level of rehit we are!
    • How is it going to help? The link is of a Sikh hunter. Fine, but what good does that do the lazy Sikh who ate khulla maas in a restaurant? By the way, for the OP, yes, it's against rehit to eat khulla maas.
    • Yeah, Sikhs should do bhog of food they eat. But the point of bhog is to only do bhog of food which is fit to be presented to Maharaj. It's not maryada to do bhog of khulla maas and pretend it's OK to eat. It's not. Come on, bro, you should know better than to bring this Sakhi into it. Is this Sikh in the restaurant accompanied by Guru Gobind Singh ji? Is he fighting a dharam yudh? Or is he merely filling his belly with the nearest restaurant?  Please don't make a mockery of our puratan Singhs' sacrifices by comparing them to lazy Sikhs who eat khulla maas.
    • Seriously?? The Dhadi is trying to be cute. For those who didn't get it, he said: "Some say Maharaj killed bakras (goats). Some say he cut the heads of the Panj Piyaras. The truth is that they weren't goats. It was she-goats (ਬਕਰੀਆਂ). He jhatka'd she-goats. Not he-goats." Wow. This is possibly the stupidest thing I've ever heard in relation to Sikhi.
    • Instead of a 9 inch or larger kirpan, take a smaller kirpan and put it (without gatra) inside your smaller turban and tie the turban tightly. This keeps a kirpan on your person without interfering with the massage or alarming the masseuse. I'm not talking about a trinket but rather an actual small kirpan that fits in a sheath (you'll have to search to find one). As for ahem, "problems", you could get a male masseuse. I don't know where you are, but in most places there are professional masseuses who actually know what they are doing and can really relieve your muscle pains.
