Hi everyone I am 12 years old and I live in Surrey British Columbia, Canada. I have been facinated by Sikhism for a few years now and I would like to become a Sikh. I always wanted to wear a Kirpan and I would like to wear a patka like the other Sikh boys at my school but I am to afraid to approach any sikhs about the desire to convert. Please help me

Hey kiddo,

Glad that you are interested in sikhi at such age. There is no conversion ceremony in sikhi and you being so young, i would encourage you to take all steps and guidance from and with your parents. Maybe plan to visit summer in punjab, india with your parents. Take slow steps and hat way you will stay strong in sikhi faith.

Read daily sikh prayers on your computer and visit sikh gurdwara with your parents wheneve its possible with you and your parents.

Hello young boy,

it is a sign of inmense grace on you from Wahiguru, that on such a tender age, you think about spirituality. But keep in mind, that sikhee is a discipline to straighten the mind and dye it in the colour of Wahiguru. Because it is our soul which has to get merged in the Lord Wahiguru.

The purpose of sikhee is to make grow love for Wahiguru within us by remebering His Name at all times, and to respect all living beings, of being noble, of being humble, to help the needy. This is the way to surely attract more grace from Wahiguru so that we become purer and merge in Him one day, by His grace only.

For the mean time, always obey and love your parents, not out of fear, but with love, as after Wahiguru, they are your best well wishers always.

Also read the Bani either from internet or if some friend can lend you some literature, and try to imbibe the moral values of Sikhee, as in the end, whether young or old, east or west, this is the only wealth, we shall take with us when we leave this world , Everything else shall be left behind, which is not more useful than a handful of dust...

He and His Name, is the only lasting reality, and our union with Him, is possible only by loving Him, that is doing His devotion with utter love....

May God bless you, dear child.

Sat Sree Akal.

I am white not Punjabi by the way. Anyway I live with my stepmother and father and both of them are not very fond of Sikhs. I am afraid of telling them I want to become a Sikh. I was wondering if I do become Sikh and if my parents throw me out if anyone knows a Sikh family whom I can stay with?

Begin with general conversation about religion with your parents. You can learn about them and from them. Respectfully challenge their views with questions and have them do the same to you.

At this stage you don't have to tell them everything as you are still learning about yourself, but it opens the door for future conversations.

In the meantime you can learn about sikhi. Educate yourself about all religions and no religions as well. Keep in mind that sikhs should never try to put any pressure to make you become a Sikh nor should they ever have any closed doors.

If all is ok with your parents and you to explore further, I suggest you ask about youth camps or groups at the Gurudwara.

Guest be good

How beautiful that u want to practice Truth at such a young age. *EDITED* Sikh means student- we're students of truth- Satnaam means Truth is His name.

Read english tranlations of Guru Granth Sahib Ji, thats what I did-

And do what it says in your everyday life- remeber what u learn during the day- that's also applying the knowledge u learn.

Always speak the Truth-even a white lie is still a lie. Be good, dont talk badly about others- treat others as u would like to be treated, with respect, meditate etc.

God Bless u, you're an inspiration to young people- n the world needs more souls like you to spread light.
