Europe Gurdwaras May be Affected by Change in Allergen Regulations

2014-10-24- thinkallergyBIRMINGHAM, UK (October 28, 2014)Sikh Council UK have alerted the Sangat of an important piece of European legislation called the Food Information for Consumers Regulation (EU FIC). As of 13th December 2014, the regulation will change the way allergen information appears on labels and on food that is pre‑packed, sold loose or served when you are eating out.

At the moment it is unclear as to how exactly it would apply to langar but it certainly applies to food bought loose that is served in Gurdwaras and at events such as weddings. Given that some people suffer from food allergies or food intolerance or may have diet related conditions, it is vitally important to be aware of the 14 allergens that need to be declared and made publicly available if they are present in the langar.

One way of managing this may be to standardise the menus and to strictly control cross contamination. Furthermore, we also need to make the Sangat aware of the requirements when buying loose cooked food for events.

Maybe this a blessing in disguise as we can eliminate the current trend of outside catering being brought in and distributed in langar e.g. mithai, shop-bought sweets. It will eliminate soya based foods as they are unhealthy anyway this would be better for sangat. Set menus and approachs to langar makes for better accountability, less wastage, simpler langar as in the true sense of langar not as is currently experienced where there is an element of making it more like restaurant with choices of pickles and relishes.

Bhein ji don't get your hopes up, this won't happen in England Gurdwaras.

First Committee's don't care & secondly Sikh vote bank politics, Gora's aren't stupid :-)

Frankly how many of the locals have Langar on daily basis ?

Mostly Fauji's & overseas students are regulars.

They have good meal & sometimes delicacy's courtesy of Sangat.

Honestly they deserve it as they do Hathi Seva in Gurdwara.

[sumptuous food provides good nutrition.

In India Kar Seva people prepare their own food coz Gurdwara Langar lacks good nutrition.]

If it get passed in Europe it will be implemented here too, just like the restrictions on herbal medicines and other recent changes . It is not a question of committees caring it will be rule of law otherwise they will shut down langar kitchens. Since when has the European countries cared for Sikh sentiments ? We would be wise to assume it is a question of when not if and plan langar overhaul in line with anti allergen policy, maybe assign a specific Langar Safety sewak in each gurdwara .

The point was not me desiring something , but my observation that the original meaning of langar has been forgotten , a means to quell hunger so the mann is shant to absorb bani and it has become a competitive arena for people , trying to outdo each other on the delicacies they can bring in to give out . Do Guru's sewa to the best of your ability but remember you have to keep nimrata.

that last throwaway statement was kind of rude and just showed your low opinion of others
