Will The Marriage Be Accepted? Surname Issue.

Recommended Posts

Hello everybody. I have a question regarding marriage I would like to ask and seek peoples views and opinions on.

I am in love with a guy and he is also in love with me. We want to get married. Before asking my parents I want to address a small issue that may come up.

My surname is currently Mann. The boys surname is Bahia. Before my grandma got married to my grandad her surname was also Bahia therefore all of my mums nanke are Bahia.

If I ask my parents if i can marry him will this be an issue? Will they disapprove because all my nanke have the surname Bahia or will this be allowed??

Was just curious as if heard of a similar issue like this come up in some far relatives.

You would need to check with the elders and per family situation.

There's always going to be some eyebrows raised but there is no genetic issue as such. It's your mother's nankey ie. your mothers-mother side(2 generations and 3 counting yourself).

I have known some marriages like this to take place without too much problem.

Also, you've only mentioned that the surnames are the same but were the villages of origin also the same ?

Savinderpal singh , I disagree , I have not come across sucu lines in any rehat maryada. Its only brahminical kind of views. Even otherwise, pepple frm different castes have similar surnames , so ppl with same family name come from same genepool may not be true

just hitting nail on the head................ awesome

nothing to do with any maryada....so let's stop complicating this issue.

The op has kindly asked about her situation and where she stands...........so, instead of shouting our opinions we should try and give some explanations and advice.

Yes,, same surname does not always mean same village and same family origins.

For benefit of all let me quote sikh rehst maryada published by SGPC which was approved by panth after much delibrations and taking view of all sampradayes on 3 feb 1945. It says on page page 25 under the heading "Sikh sikhnu da vyaah bina jaat , paat , got de vichar de hona chahiye" .Would any one singh give interpretation what does this mean? So far in our family (we are five brothers ) neither our parents or we nor our next generation gives any preference to jaat or gots in making aliances fir matrimony.
