Should Gurudawaras Implement Strict Dress Codes?

Sat Sri Akal online sangat i have a question regarding dress code in gurdwara. I was at the Gurdwara last week and it seems like there was a wedding going on so i quickly went in to mahta tek and decided to stay for a while but what i saw made me feel really uncomfortable and i decided to leave.

what i saw was i guess the ladies attending the wedding were wearing clothing that i felt was a bit to revealing like sleavless and tight suits even not wearing chuni properly some of them were wearing alot of make up and big earrings i thought to myself since when did the gurdwara turn into a fashion show? Do you think gurwaras should put signs outside showing proper dresscode or would that be a bit too much and i would also like to add that i mostly see this during weddings but even when there is no wedding i still see ladies not covering there had properly and even little kids who wear rumal not wear properly and there mothers do not do anything especially when eating langar. I feel like reminding them to cover there heads but i really don't want to come off as aggressive and i am the type who likes to avoid confrontation.

Its perfectly reasonable for signage to be used to remind all that they are in the hazoori of the king of kings, therefore guru maharajs teachings and the right of all to worship/meditate must be respected.

Polite notices should be put up to remind all whilst in gurdwara to;

- dress modestly,

- wear sleeves/loose clothes

- keep head FULLY covered

- encourage children to respect sggs ji (not wander alone in diwan hall)

Whilst in langar hall:

- to either serve or to be served langar (refrain from using langar hall as a place to gather to gossip)

- if physically able to; sit on the floor to consume langar as sign of equality of all mankind as prescribed by guru maharaj

Overall respect sacticty of gurdwara and right of all to worship and serve in a tranquil environment.

We can all do with a reminder on how to behave every now and then. I wish more gurdwara committees did more to encourage best practice in guru ghars.

How about a petition to sikh council to make a push to set out a standard signage system across UK gurdware to encourage ^

As for a strict dress code..

I brlieve only a gurmukh that understands gurbani in depth and could justify such a move with with the endorsement of sggs ji could comment on the merits of such a rule.

i agree with you fully . Actually we the elders are at fault as we ourselves do not set examples for the next gen, and the values get diluted after every generation , As vigilant mothers , only bibis , the bibis who have themselves have imbibed sikh values ,can bring the situation back to normal .This is my view , and all have their views about the problem so it would be interesting to get different views on th e matter

it will never work its impossible on a wedding day your gonna get girls dressed poorly and men turning up with cigarettes and alcohol breath ive seen it all before

And with the current commercialization of temples i doubt the pardaan will want his wallet affected

on another note what about keertan samagams theres people coming in and out of the darbaar all the time there should be strict time keeping come and sit and stay for the whole divaan especially AKJ samaghams are all rushed and khap khana all over

Do you feel its worthwhile pressuring 'uk sikh council' asking all member gurdware to implementing the poster or something similar?

If the majority of the large mainstream gurdware did so after petitions from common folks it could take off.

Yeah im sure that would be worthwhile worth a try!

BUT would the rules be implemented? Or is the poster just gunna be pinned up amongst the rest on some shoddy notice board...
