Sikhs In The Movies - Sir Ben Kingsley's Learning To Drive

Recommended Posts

So, I've been watching the trailers for the new Hollywood rom/com 'Learning to Drive' due to be released late this summer. Ben Kingsley's the lead and he plays a Sikh driving instructor. From what I can see from the trailers, this movie might just do an amazing job of showing the mainstream population what normal, wonderfull people we are and how amazing our religion is.

Not really into rom/coms so can't say I'm looking forward to seeing it, but I am looking forward to the inevitable favourable reaction towards Sikhs that will come with it.

Yes, and I'm glad that they got a reputable actor like Ben Kingsley to play the Sikh sardar. That alone will give it some credibility and inspire people to take a closer look at the film.

I wish they did a better job of tying his turban though ...

Why's this rated R?

I don't know about the rating jacfsing2. I really couldn't comment on the movie other than the fact that i will never watch rom/coms and would rather have a sharp pencil poked in my eye than do so. The reason, however, that I made this thread, is because of the ingredients of this movie and the understanding of what will follow. I know 2 things:

  • This movie will appeal as the 'movie of the year' for white middle class middle aged mothers in all English speaking countries.
  • The movie's star is Sir Ben Kingsley and the power in the media of what movie Ben Kingsley star's in can best be illustratrated by the episode in The Sopranos where Ben Kingsley not only plays a role (himself) but the very premise of him being the greatest actor on earth is the very essence of the episode.

Point is, forget the rating. This movie, when it comes out, is going to have a profoundly positive effect on all of us dastar wearing Singhs.
