Why Do So Many Sikhs/punjabis Support Liverpool/united

Recommended Posts

I have two issues on football but will keep them on the same thread. First why does so sikhs/support liverpool united. All these supporters come from London and the Midlands, why not a local team? Is it to with hunger for success? Why not a local team spurs, villa, arsenal are big clubs. Some will say that London teams have a racist following like west ham or chelsea, they did not now. But people from Liverpool are some of the most racist you could come across in the 70s and 80s. Yet so many of lads support liverpool from that generation.wolves wba have alot of sikh fans but considering the area they should have more. secondly what do you think bout safe standing? Celtic have why not in England?

It's typical of immigrants, recent or otherwise. Ask any guy who has literally just floated into this country on top of a box of mangoes which football club he supports and he will invariably tell you 'Manchester United'.

Why someone who lives in West London would support a Manchester based club is beyond me. Support your local team.

Historically, Hounslow (and particularly the Feltham part of Hounslow) was, and to an extent still is, the epicentre of Chelsea's fan base.

Historically, Southall (2 miles up from Hounslow) was the epicentre of QPR's fan base. My dad was QPR and he passed it on to me. It's in our blood. It was always sacriledge for someone from Southall to support Chelsea. But today's kids in Southall have no understanding of these things. I get sick to my stomach the amount of apne Chelsea supporters I see in Southall these days. :angry2:

You have a wonderful way with words that always makes me chuckle.

I guess the PC brigade have done a good number on me throughout the years because I start to feel guilty even thinking along these lines now.

if people of Southall support chelsea it's not a bad thing better than supporting some team from the north. You can't beat the second city derby villa v birmingham city has an electronic atmosphere, it get nasty on and of the pitch but it's part of the thrill

Its history though Hammertime. A rite of passage. Every other Saturday Sikh men would travel up the Uxbridge Road to Shepherd's Bush with their son but the newer arrivals in Southall (those that didn't come in the 50's and 60's) have no appreciation of any of the history. You know, growing up, you knew your cousins down the road in Hounslow would fall under Chelsea's catchment area whereas we were QPR's or Brentford. Now Brentford is an interesting one because although technically it falls under the London Borough of Hounslow historically it always fell under the hundred of norwood green (southall) so as you can see genuine football fans have a greater appreciation of history. I just can't see the current crop of Asian glory hunter fans as genuine fans.

With the exception of your QPR fanhood, you've expressed my own sentiments exactly. I can't say that football allegiances are hereditary in my family, unfortunately, speaking as a Brentford supporter who was sired by a glory-coveting red devil.

Why feel guilty eduardo? It's hardly the white mans' fault that apne are so utterly predictable and adept at living up to their own stereotypes.
