Punjab has already been declared as the state with highest number of deaths in road accidents in the country.
The data also reveals that the number of deaths is alarmingly increasing every year. While 3317 persons were killed during 2013-14, the number stood at 3538 during 2014-15. Till July 31, already 1248 have lost their lives on State’s roads cutting through the length and breadth of the State.

Few relevant points as to why Punjab roads are so "bad":

  • No one (the majority) follows any of the driving rules
  • No one (the majority) knows the rules
  • Are there any rules?
  • No enforcement of rules/where there is it will be over the top - e.g. a battering!
  • Alcohol/Drug abuse by drivers
  • Too many construction projects going on without hardly any provision of diversion
    • e.g. in the UK if there is a major road closed they'll be yellow signs showing the driver which way to go for diverted traffic

Root causes are probably the same as most other issues - corruption - in this case the government organisation responsible for upkeep of roads is probably giving contracts out based on nepotism

The arterial routes have improved but the roads connecting villages are still riddled with potholes. Any one been to Punjab will know this is due to corruption at every level and everyone takes a commission to line their pockets. So it's not that they are incapable of building fit for use highways or the original material earmarked for roads is substandard, just there is not much left once the vultures have had their fill.

Dangers stems from drunk driving, drug addicts and the major RTA's I've come across have involved HGVs and coaches, and it's not like they have tachometers fitted that they are required by law to rest periodically. Not adhering to the myriad laws due to the cha/pani pay-offs does not help either.
