One In 10 British Asians Backs Honour Killings

One in 10 British Asians believe that so-called honour killings -- of someone who brings shame on their family -- are justifiable, according to a poll.

A tenth of 500 Hindus, Sikhs, Christians and Muslims surveyed by the BBC's Asian Network radio said they would condone the murder of someone who disrespected their family's honour.

Typically, that might involve a woman who has a relationship with someone of another religion. About 13 people a year in Britain are thought to die in honour killings, the survey's authors said.

"Most of the Asians who are in Britain today come from very tribal communities," said Navid Akhtar, a journalist who has been examining the issue.

So, do you think as young British Sikhs that this is an accurate reflection of our community? Or are the findings biased?

Do you think that as Sikhs we can and should do more to fight against this crime?

erm...well, i don't know what u mean by 'should we sikhs start protecting etc...' could u explain that please...

honour killing? do u mean, ppl who are in a religion will kill for their religion? if so...then that statictic is wrong! the only ones around here who are killing for there honour are ppl who call themselves muslims, but don't follow their religion, but use their religion as an excuse to use violence e.g. 'why u bein racist'...result:- u get all of em attacking you! well, the really closed minded ones anyway

i bet i've totally got this wrong!"

I think this is disgusting...for heavens sake....I can't believe the backwards attitude of so many Indian...I mean Sikhs/Muslims and Hindus.

I know a Gursikh family who I adore, but when speaking to one of them about this, they would partake in such honour killings.

Its not about religion totally, its basically if a Sikh (be they religious or not) runs off with a gora or a muslim etc...and the same with muslims.

It stems from the close-knit communities who DO NOT mix with others...aka areas like Bradford, Burnley in the NorthWest. You always find little areas full of asians...mostly who do not mix and stay within themselves.

This breeds social contempt for others and the law....it just leads to misguided ideas...aka the recent state of extremism in the muslim communities (where I think it is the MUSLIMS who need to look into themselves and acknoweldge that there are extreemists within their circle [i'm by no way being racist])...

It's a shame...because we are all living in the UK...a Western culture...I'm not saying leave behind all our values, but we HAVE to adapt to survive.

Anyway..that was just my 50cents.

Young Sikhs and young Sikh organisations should stand up in public against this in the same way that we organise against things like Beadbi so that we can make sure people know that Sikhism is not a religion that tolerates this. Otherwise the next time a Sikh family murders their daughter for whatever reason, it will be plastered all over the newspapers and we will sink further into the gutter.

I agree, but I think we should be more cohesive with other cultures and associate more and mix more. Sikhs, I think, have a good rep. for doing this. But it's ashame our Muslim and Hindu cousins don't. Espicially muslims.

I remember reading something in the papers a few weeks ago about some Uk muslim association lobbying the government for sharia law in the UK.

I mean, come on....even I think this is not really a good idea!!!

Oh well!!! grin.gifgrin.gifgrin.gif

To be honest, I think Sikhs generally do mix, but there are still a significant number of Sikhs who are backwards and stuck in their disgusting paindu ways of doing things and seeing the world.

Its rather to do with their beliefs, principles and values of a certain minority

The majority of people who do it are ignorant and backward with tribal mentality - for example Mirpuri Pakistanis. If you see Sikhs who do it, I bet they will have the same profile of very 'caste pride' of people, with backward village mentality. It is tribal not religious, although when religious people do not do anything about it, they become complicit in a way by ignoring it.

    • yeh it's true, we shouldn't be lazy and need to learn jhatka shikaar. It doesn't help some of grew up in surrounding areas like Slough and Southall where everyone thought it was super bad for amrit dharis to eat meat, and they were following Sant babas and jathas, and instead the Singhs should have been normalising jhatka just like the recent world war soldiers did. We are trying to rectifiy this and khalsa should learn jhatka.  But I am just writing about bhog for those that are still learning rehit. As I explained, there are all these negative influences in the panth that talk against rehit, but this shouldn't deter us from taking khanda pahul, no matter what level of rehit we are!
    • How is it going to help? The link is of a Sikh hunter. Fine, but what good does that do the lazy Sikh who ate khulla maas in a restaurant? By the way, for the OP, yes, it's against rehit to eat khulla maas.
    • Yeah, Sikhs should do bhog of food they eat. But the point of bhog is to only do bhog of food which is fit to be presented to Maharaj. It's not maryada to do bhog of khulla maas and pretend it's OK to eat. It's not. Come on, bro, you should know better than to bring this Sakhi into it. Is this Sikh in the restaurant accompanied by Guru Gobind Singh ji? Is he fighting a dharam yudh? Or is he merely filling his belly with the nearest restaurant?  Please don't make a mockery of our puratan Singhs' sacrifices by comparing them to lazy Sikhs who eat khulla maas.
    • Seriously?? The Dhadi is trying to be cute. For those who didn't get it, he said: "Some say Maharaj killed bakras (goats). Some say he cut the heads of the Panj Piyaras. The truth is that they weren't goats. It was she-goats (ਬਕਰੀਆਂ). He jhatka'd she-goats. Not he-goats." Wow. This is possibly the stupidest thing I've ever heard in relation to Sikhi.
    • Instead of a 9 inch or larger kirpan, take a smaller kirpan and put it (without gatra) inside your smaller turban and tie the turban tightly. This keeps a kirpan on your person without interfering with the massage or alarming the masseuse. I'm not talking about a trinket but rather an actual small kirpan that fits in a sheath (you'll have to search to find one). As for ahem, "problems", you could get a male masseuse. I don't know where you are, but in most places there are professional masseuses who actually know what they are doing and can really relieve your muscle pains.
