One of the things that fascinate me about how Banda Singh Bahadhur is how from being a reclusive ascetic and cutting himself from the rest of the world to joining Dashmesh Pita and engaging with the world. And by doing so, he erupted and made the Mughals shudder. I think that at some level I can understand the appeal of being a recluse where you just want to get away from the world and just engage in your own spiritual journey. But the world comes knocking at your door and you have no choice but to join the rest of the world. I think to a large degree many of us Sikhs want to be left alone and be like Madho Das but we have to live in this world and do what must…

The Christians remember the poor and homeless during Xmas and then forget for the rest of the year. The Muslims remember the poor and homeless during Ramadan and then forget for the rest of the year. We Sikhs remember the poor and homeless all year round. The Muslims helps a non Muslim so he can convert them. A Christian helps a non Christian so he can convert them. We Sikhs help non Sikhs with no strings attached. Big difference

I came across this pangti when I was at the gurdwara listening to kirtan: ਜੋ ਸਿਰੁ ਸਾਂਈ ਨਾ ਨਿਵੈ ਸੋ ਸਿਰ ਦੀਜੈ ਡਾਰਿ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਸੁ ਪਿੰਜਰ ਮਹਿ ਬਿਰਹਾ ਨਹੀ ਸੋ ਪਿੰਜਰੁ ਲੈ ਜਾਰਿ॥ chop off that head which does not bow to the Lord O Nanak, take that body, in which there is no pain of separation from the Lord-take that body and burn it My Punjabi is very limited and I don’t know what the proper meaning of the pangti is, as I’m sure there is a deeper meaning behind the vague translation. thanks

Plz don't go against me for the heading of this post Actually somebody signed the SikhMap at my site click here to see it Click on the list option and it's the 1st entry In comments he said " Raj Kare Ga Khalsa Baki Rahe Na Koi I think it's wrong. I think it's aaki or like that(correct me if i'm wrong) Surely Sikhi doesn't say"Baki rahe na koi" I think many of us still don't know what we speak. look how wrong impression it goes to everybody when we say this everyday in Gurdwara and people misunderstand it Now what should i do................ 1)should i leave it as such 2) correct it with right word which I think is aaki but certainly not baki 3) mail that person …

Been reading Anita Anand's book on Sophia, who was Maharajah Ranjit Singh's granddaughter. Here's an interesting excerpt regarding the treatment of lascars, who were essentially hired sailors, many of whom came from Panjab. It's interesting to note how M. Duleep Singh, who is commonly characterised as some hedonistic fool in white literature, tried to help these very ill-treated people (before the anglo establishment attacked him), and how his daughter subsequently did so much for these people too:

I have come a few questions that get asked on Sikhi. Is Sikh faith an actual religion? Not sure what people mean when they ask this or what they are getting at. Did Guru Nanak Create Sikh religion? Or is Sikhi based on Guru Ji Philosophy.. Why does Sikhi have so much similarity with Hinduism? I've reincarnation, Karma? Where did Sikhs get the one God belief. Did they copy this from Islam. Some say Guru Nanak was influenced by Islam?? Btw these are just questions I've come across. I'm not saying these a valid questions.

The Christian believes in the trinity. One God that splits into three. The Hindu say they believe in one god and then proceed to worship deities. The Jew and Muslim de-pantheinised their gods and picked one out of the multiple of deities that is one to he worshipped above all. The Buddhist does not really believe in God but have deities. The above may claim mono-theism but what is mono-theism. All the above are just deity worshippers in one way or another. We as Sikhs just have one-ness, it's Nirgun and Sargun, beyond time. The one-ness permeates everything and anything and is ever present. The Mool Mantar by itself dispells all the non…

So I’m new to tying a pagg, and a lot of my relatives tie them (particularly the uk/Kenyan style or normal Wattan wali pagh). I am a school student in the uk but I don’t have enough time every morning to tie a perfect looking Dastar, and if my turban (which is my crown and pride) doesn’t look it’s best, then I cannot perform my day to day tasks (including school work) effectively and will not have confidence. They all starch their Turbans to save time, and they look very nice on the Uk/Kenyan style Paags. Please could someone tell me how to do this? I know some Sikhs are against the idea of starching turbans and label them as “topis” or “against rehat”, but please only re…
