I have been in a relationship with a nonsikh man for the past 4 years, but it has been a secret relationship (meaning my parents don't know). For the past two years we have been talking about marriage, but in Indian or Sikh culture I have realized that this is deemed as unacceptable. But why is it unacceptable? I don't see any reason other than the fact that I wouldn't be able to pass on the culture or bring my children up as Sikhs, but he has agreed to let me do that because he understands that it is something very important to me. If he's okay with that- then why would it still be unacceptable?

Is "Sikhni" an appropriate word to refer to Sikh girls or is it a slur as I've only heard non-Sikhs using Sikhni.

I recently have been to a wedding at a Gudwara and was amazed to see so many Sikh women wearing the wrong type of clothing inside the Gudwara. I saw many women wearing low cut tops, sleeveless suits, sarees suits, low cut suits on the back, tight trouser suits and also when sitting in front of the Gurugranth Sahib their heads were not covered or half covered. I very much thought this to be extremely derogatory and a huge lack of respect to our Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. Its not a fashion show to go to the gurdwara!! I wanted to know what are the sangats views on this and what can be better done to put sense into these people who do these things. Is this the modern Sikh…

Why are Sikh women always blamed for letting down Sikhi when Sikh men have also done it? Sardar Ishar Singh Nakai of Nakai Misl which was one of the twelve Sikh Misls converted to Islam to marry a Muslim lady. He took the name Abdul Aziz Nakai and his descendents are influential people in Pakistani politics. M.Ranjit Singh married a Muslim nautch girl moran who opened Arabic and Persian schools after marriage and a mosque. She outraged Muslims when she spent one of her first nights with Ranjit Singh on top of the minaret of Wazir Khan Mosque. Boota Singh, a ex Sikh soldier of the British army is well known for his love story with a Muslim woman Zainab. He illega…

I am asking this question as I am unsure as to whether Shaheed Singh's or Kaur's actually get mukht/liberated from becoming shaheed, as Gurbani provides no evidence of this? I understand that the Chali Mukte got liberated by Satguru Sri Gobind Singh Ji, and other shaheeds like Baba Banda Singh Bahadur. But lets forget puratan times because I know all the shaheeds then were brahm gianis but what about from 1984 and ownards? The reason I am asking this is because I recently attended an akath katha where the guy was standing up and explaining how to meet Vaheguru through Gurbani. He even went to explain what manmat is, showing a presentation slide full of manmat 'tools' lik…

A friend said to me that if a girl/women is menstruating she is forbidden to go to the Gurdwara and take part in seva (preparing langar) or go near the Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. This has got me scared and now every time I menstruate I dont tend to go to the Gurdwara and then produce a guilty conscience for not going. I need to clear this minsunderstanding regarding sikh girls/women. I've heard so many times that if a Sikh girl/women is menstruating they're not allowed near the Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, or in the Gurdwara or even allowed to serve or make the Langar. Is this true or is this just a myth/tabboo?

WJKK WJKF everyone, Just to add some much needed input to a discussion taking place on the main page regarding the design of Sikh Gurdwaras: https://www.sikhsangat.com/index.php?/topic/83132-gurdwara-designs/ TejS said: No. It's a very common misconception to refer to something as 'Arabian' architecture. The 'Arabian' style is very different and this is well articulated by the designs of Moorish Islamic architecture in Spain. This photograph from 1915 of the great mosque of Kufa demonstrates well I think what the Arabian architectural style of a mosque always was: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/a2/Kufa_Mosque%2C_1915.jpg…

Its been couple of years since my marriage. In this few years I have blessed by guru sahib with a cute lil son . With my not-so-much salary , and my mom a housewife , and an old weakened father on the brink of retirement , I am seriously beginning to wonder what to do ahead. My wife has completed her B.A (bachelor in arts), a degree traditionally believed to be of little value lol. It doesn't seem she's interested in pursuing higher education. She used to work in a shop before marriage as she hails from a rural , poor family. But she's passionate about one thing . Hairstyling and cosmetics . Infact, before she turned pregnant, she had a short training at…
