Harpreet Singh Toor, a neighborhood activist who is running to become the first Sikh in the city council, has come up with an innovative way to get his voters to the polls next Tuesday. Toor has arranged for Sikh cab drivers to use their cars to ferry voters to and from the polls on election day. "It is important that the voters in Southeast Queens make their voices heard," Toor said. "Of course I hope that they vote for me, but what is most important is that they vote. For too long the needs of this district have been ignored by those in office. The only way we will change things for the better is to come out and vote in large numbers." Toor noted that Sikh cab drivers also offered free rides in the wake of 9/11, and said the gesture then and next week is related to the Sikh concept of Seva, which he defined as doing service without any expectation of return. Toor is running for the seat vacated by the late Tom White. Nicole Paultre Bell and Ruben Wills are widely viewed as the front-runners in that race. District residents who want the rides can call the Toor campaign office at 917.653.3205 Source: The New York Observer1 point

Leather, Hide products have been used for hundreds of years in india and as part of ancient sikh way of life. For example hide water carriers to carry water to drink or hide shields that many ancient sikh warriors used in battle. Items such as these have always been used in every day life. Some might dissagree...ok....if we were to ban or stop the wearing or using of leather/hide items then 90% of traditional sikh musical culture (Gurmat Sangeet) would have to die. Yes...dilruba, taus tabla are just a few that are made using animal hide......the famous ranjeet nagara also made of animal hide....the chaur sahib made from animal hair... Just something to think about1 point

SEWADAR5, Coming from a personal viewpoint, the Sikhi that I interpret is self-effacing, down to earth and humble. Personally I don't know if we really need to shout from the rooftops about how great and wonderful some indivduals are. As the saying goes 'actions speak louder than words.' ghat ghat kai antar ki jant. bhlai burai ki pir pachant. chiti tai kunchr asthoola. sabh par kirpa diristi kar phoola. (11) Intimate Knower of all our feelings recognises the intentions of all creatures, good or bad. From ant to elephant, He protects and cares for all.(11) (Chaupai Sahib) There comes a point in time when awards in lavish venues just get brushed off as an ego puffing exercise. If your intentions were to genuinely give recognition to these "Sikhs" then perhaps change the venue to a Gurdwara where the mahan sirapo be offered to these "Sikhs" in front of the very Guru and Sangat who gave them the blessings to be successful in the first place. I am sorry but I could not connect the nimrata of Sikhi with this type of Award ceremony. I just didn't get it and please don't take it personal to your event management prowess.1 point

you have clearly missed the point. everyone takes their shoes off before entering the darbar sahib, that is not the issue. the point im making is that you can walk into a gurdwara wearing leather shoes! obviously you take them off before entering the darbar sahib. nobodys raising their opinion on whether you should wear shoes or not in the darbar sahib! choose your words more carefully next time mate.1 point

I seriously cannot stop laughing and some of the above comments! ... When you walk into Darbar Sahib, whats the tabla made of? .... What the Ranjit Nagara made of? ... What are puratan Shastar Miyaans made of? ... What are most small shastar handles made of?? (Animal Bone) ... What do you think was used to poison weapons?? (various goat/animal fluids) ... what is the Dilruba made of? ... What is the Sarangi made of? ... what is any puratan tanti saaj made of? .... what were shoes made out of in the old times??? ... what was some forms of armour made from??? ........ The answer is all leather! .... theres nothing wrong with wearing leather in the gurdwara or anywhere else for that matter! ... :lol:1 point

I think everyone that follows their religion with a pure heart, follows it fully and is a good humanbeing all merge into waheguru ji. but if all your life you acted like a good _________ (fill in religion) but didn't really believe in it or it was just an act, you won't merge into waheguru ji. or if you spent your life being a good ______ (fill in religion) but towards the end or part way through your mind starts to have doubts and you think another religion is how you'll reach Waheguru Ji, then I think waheguru ji gives you a chance to be reborn in that religion so you can merge into him. you don't have to be a Sikh to meet waheguru ji0 points

I have put no words in your mouth, but only presented you with lines of Gurbani that show contradictions on YOUR beliefs. Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji Maharaj and Sri Dasam Granth Sahib ji Maharaj is not allergic to using Hindu Gods to convey a message. It's on you to intrepret it in the correct form. So when it comes to Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji Maharaj it's alright to use hindu gods names and it's not okay for Sri Dasam Granth Sahib ji Maharaj. I understand your double standard now. So now your getting the picture. If i provide the info will you answer all the questions that Bundha and GPS had for you. You miss over their questions and continue on with your rant. When GPS asked you the question where does it say Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji Maharaj is the Guru, you went straight to accusations, without understanding the context in which the question was asked. You do the same with Sri Dasam Granth Sahib ji Maharaj. I presented those tuks from Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji Maharaj to show you that your not taking the Shabad of Sri Dasam Granth Sahib ji Maharaj in all complete history and context in which it has been written in. And for your info the Ardas that is done in Gurdwaras, it's from Sri Dasam Granth Sahib ji Maharaj. There are only two Banis from Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji Maharaj read in the Amrit Sanchar. If you can just drop all your accusations, double standards, misintrepreting for one minute. You will be able to see everything Dhan Dhan Dhan Sri Dasam Granth Sahib ji Maharaj has offer to you. If you find Charitropakhyan allergic, then I can presnt some offensive Gurbani from Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji Maharaj, which you(in terms of nindaks of Sri Dasam Granth Sahib ji Maharaj, not pro Sri Dasam Granth Sahib ji Maharaj people because they understand, which means Sants like Sant Maskeen Singh ji) will find unbearable to read, before your sister, mother). I only bring this up because you(nindaks of Sri Dasam Granth Sahib ji Maharaj bring this very disgusting, unreasonable, arrogant arguement up.-1 points

.Wearing flowers in Sachkandh, really? I thought it was only hindu gods who wear these in their heavens/realms, and I thought only sikhs who have meditated on naam are allowed to enter sachkandh?-1 points
