  1. Bhaji, I believe we eat any food for the taste as much as for survival. A vegetarian has a preference to certain dishes as his tastes dictate, so he is following his taste buds as much as a non- vegetarian. We have to decide ourselves to give up the food because of an intrinsic, personally intuitive value, as it goes against our conscience i.e killing of sentient being.Even though the taste of the animal food may be admitted as favourable, the actual detriment to the conscience outweighs the taste factor. However eating a veggie chicken burger absolves me of the guilt/reasoning of eating animal food, but allows the pleasure of the artificial flavouring of the dish. As for the smokeless cigarate it has no value as to my physical survival, smoking tobacco is just a habit acquired through mental conditioning, and learned social behaviour. It is neither necessary as an aid to my survival or to the well- being of my physical/mental development, as such it has no value in my life.Smokeless cigarate containing water vapour would only be of value to a person breaking the destructive and obsessive bad habit of smoking tobacco/nicotine.

  3. I am serious. What are we supposed to follow? Rehntamae or actions of our Gurus? I've seen some people (sindhis for example) who refuse to follow banis of Guru Gobind Singh ji maharaaj, only Follow Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji Maharaaj. Hence they refuse to wear a kirpan, take armit, bana, because they feel Guru Nanak Dev ji Maharaaj didnt preach this. Rehntnamas says to fight back against julam, some of our Guru Sahibans did, others sat on thatiyan taviyan instead. So what do we follow? Our rehntnamas say we should have Singh and Kaur, our 9 Guru Sahibaans didnt. So to have consistency in Parchar what should we preach as the example Sikhs today should follow? Don't you think its very confusing for young people to say what exactly is expected of them with a billion different saakhis shown as examples that contradict each other? When Parchaaraks sit there and say Dhan Baba Deep Singh Ji Shaheed did X amount of sukhmani sahibs everyday, how many are you doing?? but never mention Baba Deep singh was a trained Nihang singh warrior as well, living the complete balance of miri piri? I'm taking from my own experience growing up, confused what was right... the saakhis your bombarded with, the jeevan saakhis of sants- but rarely was the rehntnames of Guru Gobind singh ji maharaaj discussed, no where was birr rass banis explained, never was the ying/yang miri piri concept explained. so my question stands, when doing parcharar, what should be the example we ought to follow? Guru Sahibaan's? or Reht? And again, please ans the question on violence,- whats the last resort, and what level of violence is allowed, with an example.

  4. Shaheed Bhai Seetal Singh Matewal Introduction The pinnacle of love is to sacrifice yourself for your beloved. The Punj Pyare gave their heads to the Guru and the 40 Muktas also proved their love by sacrificing their lives. This is the highest echelon of love. During the mid-80s, the movement for a free state for the Khalsa was in its early stages. Scores of Singhs were shot and killed with each passing day. Thousands of bright men and women came forward to take up arms and fight the Brahmanical oppressors, who were bent on decimating Sikhi forever. The events of 1978 and 1984 had a deep impact on the psyche of every Sikh; this ignited a passion for Sikhi and transformed them into saint-soldiers. One such saint-soldier was Bhai Seetal Singh Matewal. Childhood Bhai Seetal Singh Ji was born in Amritsar district Baba Bakala in the house of Mata Prashan Kaur Ji and Sardar Bara Singh Ji. Bhai Sahib`s worldly education was only up to middle school. However, later on when he joined Guru Sahib’s Taksal he progressed very quickly in his religious studies. After Bhai sahib decided to leave behind his worldly education he began to help his father by working on the family farm. Anand Karaj Bhai Seetal Singh Ji’s Anand Karaj to Bibi Narinder Kaur Ji, the daughter of Sardar Udham Singh Ji took place in 1974 at the local Gurudwara Sahib in the village Oudoka. Bhai Seetal Singh Ji always used to tell his in laws that they shouldn’t get involved in any fights or quarrels with anyone. Bhai Sahib used to stress how important it was to use peaceful means whenever possible but he didn’t know that Akaal Purakh had written a war of enormous proportions in his future. Love for Hate In Bhai Sahib’s village there was a Goonda who hated Bhai Seetal Singh Ji for some reason. Whenever this Goodna used to see Bhai Sahib he used to tell him that he would trouble him so much that he would be too scared to even step foot outside his house. Bhai Seetal Singh Ji was a very calm, peaceful and loving person. Bhai Sahib tried his best to form a friendship with this Goonda but every time the Goonda would answer back with insults. Despite so much hate being funneled towards him Bhai Sahib showed the qualities of a true Gursikh by returned each message of hate with a message of love. Eventually Bhai Sahib decided that he would keep out of the Goonda’s way. One time Bhai Seetal Singh Ji along with his friend Bhai Tarseem Singh Ji were coming back to their village at night after spending some time at Mehta. As they walked on the empty road back home they realized it was quite late. As a consequence of this they decided to try and flag down any vehicle, which was headed in the direction of their village so that they could ask the driver for a lift. A few minutes after Bhai Sahib and his friend had reached this decision they heard a car coming behind them. As they turned around and began to wave their arms in the air they saw two bright lights come closer and closer before they grinded down to a halt. Bhai Sahib then walked towards the white Maruti car and began to explain why they had flagged down the car. As Bhai Sahib spoke it soon transpired that the white Maruti was owned by the same person who Bhai Sahib had problems with before. This Goonda had been drinking. As soon as he realized it was Bhai Seetal Singh Ji who had flagged down his car he took out his sword which he kept in the boot. He then began to walk towards Bhai Seetal Singh Ji with this sword as he swore at Bhai Sahib. Bhai Seetal Singh Ji tried his best to plead with this Goonda but it was to no avail. Despite the constant insults being thrown at him Bhai Sahib remained calm as he kept saying, “Chacha Sahnu Pata Nai Si Tuwahdi Car Haigi, Tusi Chala Jao…” The Goodna and a friend of his who had been traveling in the car with him decided that they would beat Bhai Sahib up. As a consequence of this the Goonda attacked Bhai Sahib with his sword. After dodging the sword a few times Bhai Sahib was finally cut just above his shoulder. As blood began to flow from his wound and trickle down his clothes all peaceful means were over. When all other means fail righteous then it becomes to draw the sword Taking the words of Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaj, CHUN KAR AZ HAMEH HEELAT-E DAR GUZASHT HALAL AST BURDAN B-SHAMSHIR DAST to heart Bhai Sahib picked up a wooden stick and began to fight back. As this fight was going on, news spread to Bhai Sahib’s village. The village emptied as everyone came to see what was happening. In the end this Goonda who had harassed Bhai Sahib and countless other villagers, lay dead in a pool of his own blood. The next day some villagers who were friends of the Goonda contacted the police and Bhai Sahib was taken into custody. All this happened in the year 1981. Life sentence and Bhai Sahib’s appeal Following a quick trial Bhai Sahib was found guilty of murder and was sentenced to life imprisonment. For one year Bhai Seetal Singh Ji was kept at the main jail in Amritsar before he was transferred to Gurdaspur jail. In 1982 Bhai Sahib appealed to the high court against his sentence. After a review of the evidence and witnesses presented in the first case the judge found that Bhai Seetal Singh Ji had acted in self defense. As a consequence of this the judge ordered the immediate release Bhai Sahib. Becoming Amritdhari As soon as Bhai Seetal Singh Ji was set free he along with his two brothers, his wife and their two sons attended an Amrit sanchar, where they presented themselves before the Panj pyarai to beg for the immortal gift of Amrit. Guru Sahib blessed Bhai Sahib and his family so much that from that day on they became Abhiyaasi gursikhs who drenched themselves in naam simran in preparation for the ultimate sacrifice that they were about to give. Bad Elements of the Movement In 1988 Bhai Seetal Singh Ji’s life took a dramatic turn. The movement for an independent Sikh nation begun by Sant Gyani Baba Jarnail Singh Ji Khalsa Bhindranwale was in full swing with scores of young men and women leaving their homes and picking up arms in defense of their faith. Seeing the popular support for the Jujharoo Singhs, a small minority of people decided to join these soldiers of Akaal Purakh not to help the movement but to fulfill their own goals and ambitions. One such person was the nephew of the same Goonda that Bhai Seetal Singh Ji had sent to face Dharam Raj in 1981. This nephew began to send death threats to Bhai Sahib and his family. He hoped that by telling other Jhujaroo Singhs that Bhai Seetal Singh Ji was a police informant he was effectively was signing Bhai Sahib’s death warrant. Atrocities in Punjab Hundreds of thousands of Indian Security Forces had flooded Punjab. These outsiders already had a dislike for Sikhs and now as they began to roam the villages and roads of Punjab, they took special pleasure in humiliating Sikhs. Rapes became common and the sight of jeeps filled with soldiers became an all too regular terror. After witnessing all these atrocities committed by the world’s largest democracy the flame that was lit inside of Bhai Seetal Singh Ji after Operation Bluestar now began to turn into a blazing fire. Joining the Movement In 1989 as this inferno spread to every single pore of Bhai Sahib’s body, he joined the Bhindranwale Tiger Force of Khalistan in their quest for justice and freedom. After Bhai Seetal Singh Ji picked up his sword in defence of Sikhi, the security forces began to harass his family and friends. But Bhai Sahib’s determination and commitment to the Panth and to Khalistan was so strong that he never looked back. The only thing he put all his energy, all his love, and all his life into was the Panth. Khalistan Armed Force/Dashmesh Regiment In order to take the movement to the next level Bhai Seetal Singh Ji formed a new Jathebandi. This Jathebandi consisted of highly motivated young Sikh men and women who had sworn to aright the wrongs done to the Sikh Kaum with their lives. As this new Jathebandi took birth it was initially called the Khalistan Armed Force but later on the Jathebandi took on a new name as it began to be known across Punjab as the Dashmesh Regiment. Even though the Indian Security Forces were provided with many modern weapons, as well as armoured vehicles and helicopters they always feared coming face to face with the forces of the Dashmesh Regiment. A True Saint-soldier Bhai Seetal Singh Ji always walked with his head held high and he firmly fought a war based on the principles of Guru Gobind Singh Ji. Bhai Sahib would constantly tell those around him, “Mera Police Naal Muqabla Abadi Vich Na Hova, Khula Kheta Vich Hova, Phir Main Delhi Dia Forca Nu Das Du Ki Muqabla Keva Hounda” – “My encounters with the police should not take place where innocent people may get hurt, they should take place in empty lands where I shall show the forces of Dehli what a real encounter feels like.” The Government's Black Cats During the 80s as jeeps upon jeeps of Indian Security Forces were beginning to be destroyed, and many areas becoming inaccessible to Indian Security, the Hindustani government was afraid that Punjab was fast slipping away. To discredit the Sikh Movement, the Indian Government had introduced gangs of thieves and murderers who dressed like Singhs but committed horrendous crimes upon innocent Sikh villagers. In addition to this they began to use all means at their disposal to separate the various Sikh Jathebandis who were fighting for independence. Due to the lies spread by agents of the Indian Government an encounter took place towards the end of 1991 between the Singhs of Bhai Seetal Singh Matewal and the Singhs of Bhai Sukhwinder Singh Pappu. During this firefight between brothers, rumours began to spread throughout Punjab that the Jathedhar of Dashmesh Regiment/Khalistan Armed Force, Bhai Seetal Singh Matewal was fatally injured. Operation Vadi Padhar These reports spread like wildfire throughout India. When they were flashed to Dehli a huge meeting was arranged which was attended by many high-ranking Police and Army personnel. During this meeting it was decided that a huge force consisting of soldiers from the Central Army, the Central Reserve Police Force, the National Guard and the Border Security Force should be assembled and dispatched in an attempt to either arrest or kill Bhai Seetal Singh Matewal and his Singhs. This operation was given the name “Vadi Padhar” and was sanctioned by the Indian government. The Villagers Plea As the armored vehicles and trucks of the Indian Army began to appear, villagers left what they were doing and rushed to the village where Bhai Seetal Singh and his Singhs were. In a collective voice they told Bhai Sahib that a huge force of soldiers and police were coming and that he along with his Singhs should leave immediately so that they wouldn’t fall into the hands of the tyrannical oppressors. Leaving the village but not the battlefield But how could this lion of Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaj leave the battlefield? Bhai Sahib and his Singhs performed an ardas and decided to stay and exchange bullets with the collective might of the Indian Armed Forces. As soon as this decision was reached by the Singhs they picked up their weapons and began to walk away from the village they were staying at to a nearby open field. Many villagers were puzzled by this action and as a consequence they asked the Singhs what they were doing. Bhai Seetal Singh Ji explained to the villagers that as soon as the Indian Armed Forces arrived they would begin shooting at any person who possessed the roop of a Sikh. The Indian security forces had done this time and time again and in this way they had managed to kill tens of thousands of innocent Sikhs in fake encounters. Even though the decision to leave the village meant that the lions of Guru Sahib would have to starve for days on end they left with a smile on their face. These beautiful Singhs didn’t have any desires of their own. It didn’t matter how long they had to go without food, or how much pain they had to endure or how much blood they had to spill, so long as no innocent person was hurt and the Kesri Nishan sahib was kept flying that’s all that mattered to them. The Indian Armed Forces arrive As this was happening the Indian Armed Forces began to sift through the fields of Punjab in an attempt to capture these lethal lions who had been wreaking such havoc amongst their ranks. On the 11th of September 1991 the armored units of the Indian army finally reached the outskirts of the fields in which the Singhs had been living for the past few days. Bhai Tarsem Singh, Bhai Gurdial Singh, Bhai Gurmukh Singh and Bhai Gurnam Singh stood along Bhai Seetal Singh Matewal as they embraced each other and readied one another for their marriage party and for their journey back home to the feet of Guru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaj. Before reading Part 3 of the story please take a moment to cast your mind back 21 years to 1986. Today was the day when a voice thundered across the world from Sri Akaal Takht Sahib Ji. That voice passed a Gurmatta which till today still binds every single Sikh of Guru Har Gobind Sahib Ji to the liberation of Khalistan. Baba Gurbachan Singh Manochahal in his final letter before he placed his head to rest at the feet of Guru Har Gobind Sahib Ji said, “This Movement can not be suppressed by anyone. So much blood has been spilt for it that no bargaining can be done now. There are only two paths for us: Takhat (throne) or Takhta(gallows). The ardaas done at Akaal Takht Sahib Ji, and the Declaration of Khalistan are our promises before Guru Sahib and we will solemnly keep them. The Sikh Sangat should be assured that the Khalsa will be victorious.” May Maharaj bless us so that we may carry the torch of freedom and honour the promises which were made by our nation. The quiet before the storm On that particular morning the Singhs were at Bolowali village in Majitha. They were sat next to the field motor of Sardar Santokh Singh Ji. It had been 14 hours since the last time they had eaten any food. At 9am as the Singhs were testing their weapons, the daughter of Sardar Santokh Singh Ji came to the field motor with food for the Singhs. The Singhs seeing their sister do this seva were extremely happy. They put their weapons to one side and started to do an ardas to Maharaj to thank him for the food they were about to eat. As soon as the ardas had finished, Bibi Ji glanced over the fields of oranges and caught sight of several armored vehicles and jeeps with machine guns mounted on top. The Singhs looked at their sister’s face and they immediately knew something was wrong. Before eating a morsel of food the lions of Guru Sahib stood up and saw the same scene, which Bibi Ji was looking at. They knew that the Indian Armed Forces would be within shooting distance soon. As a result of this the Singhs quickly told their sister to go back to her house as they left their food and picked up their weapons. Hindustani Terrorists As Bibi Ji ran through the fields back to her house she was caught be the Indian Army. They began to question her about what she was doing and where she was going. The shameless Indian Armed Forces began to harass this daughter of Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaj. The Singhs could bear all the pain in the world but they could not bear the pain of seeing their sister being disrespected in this way. As a consequence of this a hail of bullets started to fly through the Hindustani Terrorists who had dared to insult the daughter of Guru Sahib. The Singh’s response The ‘brave’ armed forces of Hindustan began to fear for their lives as they saw their comrades dropping to the floor under the fire of Bhai Seetal Singh Ji’s Dragnov Rifle. The commanders of the Indian Army recognized the sound of Bhai Sahib’s Dragnov Rifle and they immediately radioed their superiors to inform them that they had found Bhai Seetal Singh Matewal and that they would require reinforcements as they were coming under very heavy fire. On hearing of this news officials in Dehli began to celebrate and they quickly sanctioned the release of more soldiers and armored vehicles, which were deployed to Bolowali in an effort to turn the tide. No Fear Despite sending hundreds of soldiers to face Dharam Raj, these five Singhs of Guru Sahib began to notice that they were being encircled by the Indian Armed Forces, as bullets were now beginning to fly in all directions. Rather than becoming disheartened the lions of Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaj began to smile even more as they saw martyrdom close in on them. In fact before this battle began to rage the Singhs did Bhangra and made many jokes about it. These lions had no fear of death, it didn’t matter if they died today or tomorrow, they had already cut off their heads and placed them at the feet of Guru Sahib. Gambeer Sitta Bhai Gumukh Singh Bagga always used to say in a joking manner to his brothers, “Sada Naal Muquabla Vich Dushmana Nu Gambeer Seeta Bhugtne Pehnge”. Bhai Sahib used to repeat this phrase so often that his brothers in arms began to called him, “Gambeer Seeta”. Sava Lakh Sio Ek Ladaunn, Tabai Gobind Singh Nam Kahaun One important point to note is that during this particular battle Bhai Sahib and his Singhs had one Dragnov rifle, one GPM rifle, and three AK47 rifles between them along with a few rounds of ammunition. With these limited weapons and ammunition the five hungry Singhs of Guru Gobind Singh Ji started to fight the combined might of the Indian Armed Forces who had amassed over 12,000 men. Some villagers who witnessed this unique battle say that when Bhai Seetal Singh Matewal would press the trigger on his Dragnov rifle all that would remain were dead Indian soldiers, whose blood painted the fields red. Hour after hour ambulance sirens would be heard taking the dead and injured back to the city hospital. After a while the Indian Armed Forces began to think that it was they who were outnumbered and outgunned. Not in their wildest dreams could they have imagined that it was only 5 Singhs who were holding them and pushing them back to Dehli. The Indian Armed Forces retreat In an attempt to save their soldiers from what had become a killing ground, the commanders of the Indian Army ordered their troops to take defensive positions under the cover of fields, which were over 7 feet high. As the Singhs saw the Indian soldiers retreating they decided to break up. One by one they would make their way into the fields which the soldiers had taken cover in. When they caught sight of troops belonging to the Indian Armed Forces they would let out a burst of fire whilst bellowing Jaikaray. After killing a dozen soldiers in this way they would then turn around and head back to their place. An Announcement by the Indian Army and the Singhs reply After hundreds of thousands of bullets had been fired the Indian Army began to think that most of the Singhs that they were fighting against were dead or injured. As a consequence of this a loudspeaker system was brought on to the battlefield. The chief commander of the Indian Armed Forces then began to speak. In his announcement he asked the Singhs to lay down their weapons and to come out. As he was making this announcement the Singhs began to increase the intensity of their fire. Every time such an announcement was made, the lions of Guru Sahib would respond with a rain of bullets. The Bombardment Begins The Commanders of the Indian Army then authorized the use of mortar shells and bombs, which began to be dropped on the areas that they thought the Singhs were fighting from. Despite hundreds of bombs being launched at the Singhs, the rain of bullets did not stop. The soldiers of the Indian Army who were ordered to take up offensive positions refused to do so. They told their commanding officers that as soon as they stepped foot on to the battlefield, they would be cut to pieces like so many of their fallen comrades. The commanders who had authorized the use of mortar shells and bombs were shocked that despite such heavy bombardment the Singhs continued to rain down bullets as the army continued to lose more and more men. After several meetings the officers came to the conclusion that the Singhs must have underground bunkers, which they were hiding in as the bombardment was taking place. These Commanders who had fought in many wars and had undergone lots of training in warfare did not know that Singhs fight like lions in the jungle without any fear. They did not know that these lions didn’t need any bunkers to protect them as they already had the biggest protection of all provided by their king, Dhan Dhan Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaj. Bulletproof Tractors After many hours of bombardment the Indian Army commanders decided to bring in bulletproof tractors. When Bhai Seetal Singh Ji saw one of these tractors coming towards him he immediately opened fire towards the doors of the tractor. Bhai Sahib was such a good marksman that most of the bullets he fired hit the hinges which held the doors in place. After a few minutes Bhai Sahib managed to remove both doors from either side of the tractor. When this happened the CRP soldiers who were inside the tractor began to scream as they quickly retreated. As they reversed the Singhs showered the tractor with bullets until it had gone past their firing range. In this way, Bhai Seetal Singh managed to neutralize three other bulletproof tractors. These tractors came under such heavy fire from the Singhs that they caught on fire and exploded. The Punjab Police used to claim that these tractors could kill Chador when it came in range and that they could not be stopped. In their eyes the tractors were indestructible. Darkness sets in As the fields were being painted red with the blood of Indian Soldiers the sun began to set. In a few minutes darkness spread everywhere and the battlefield only saw flickers of light as bullets continued to cut through the air. The Indian Armed Forces did not know where to shoot anymore; they began to fire in all directions with little success. In an attempt to find the Singhs who were still cutting down any soldier who dared to step on the battlefield, the Indian Army began to fire chemical bombs into the air which were made to light up the sky. Whenever such a bomb flew into the sky within a few seconds it would come crashing down due to the fire of Bhai Seetal Singh Ji’s Dragnov Rifle. The Indian Government were becoming increasingly frustrated at the army’s inability to crush the resistance of what they thought was a group of a hundred Dashmesh Regiment fighters. The government had placed all the legions in Northern India at the disposal of the Indian Commanders who were involved in this ‘anti terrorism operation’, and yet for every bullet which was fired towards the Khalsa ten would come back. The Khalsa’s Reinforcements Arrive The Indian Army was not the only side that could call on reinforcements. As news spread from one village to the next about the 5 brave hearts of Punjab who were holding and repelling the army of Dehli tears of happiness began to fall from the eyes of other Jhujahroo Singhs. These Singhs performed an ardas in front of Guru Sahib and taking his name on their lips and his weapons in their arms they headed in the direction of the battlefield to fight alongside their brothers. The Regiment Singh’s of Bhai Kulwant Singh Ji and the Tiger Force Singh’s of Bhai Hardev Singh Ji and Bhai Balwinder Singh Ji surrounded the same Indian troops who had encircled the five lions of Guru Sahib. In this way battles began to rage on four separate fronts as Indian troops fell to the floor under the constant fire of the Khalsa’s bullets. As this was happening Baba Gurbachan Singh Ji Manochahal, general of the Bhindranwale Tiger Force of Khalistan arrived at the village Oudoka where he joined the Singhs in all out war. Bhai Sukhwinder Singh Pappu and his Singh’s also joined in the Khalsa’s fight as they broke through the cordon of the Indian troops. Upon seeing Bhai Sukhwinder Singh Pappu return to help his brother the local villagers spirits began to soar with love and pride. The Indian Generals became worried that the local villagers may join the Jhujharoo Singh’s who were helping Bhai Seetal Singh Ji. As a consequence of this they spread a rumor that Bhai Seetal Singh Ji Matewal and his Singhs had escaped and left the battlefield. 3 soldiers of Khalistan return home When morning broke the Indian Commanders began to see the devastating results of exchanging bullets with the Khalsa. The once green battlefield had become a mass graveyard of Indian troops as the stench of blood and death filled the air. Reports began to flood Dehli as Indian Commanders demanded the release for the first time of Vijayanta main battalion tanks in addition to other armored reinforcement units. As the sun rose, the cover of darkness deserted the Singhs and the Indian Gatling guns began to spray so many bullets into the air that it looked like a dark cloud had descended on Bhai Tasem Singh, Bhai Gurdial Singh and Bhai Gurmukh Singh. Without any fear these brave beloved sons of Guru Sahib drank the nectar of martyrdom. The Last Stand After Bhai Seetal Singh Matewal’s saw his brothers in arms kiss the noose of death, he stopped firing his Dragnov rifle. Bhai Sahib decided to wait for the Indian Armed Forces to come and pick up their dead and injured. As the Indian Army began to do this Bhai Seetal Singh Ji and Bhai Gurnam Singh Ji sat in the fields where they did a final ardas to Maharaj. They knew the end was near. When the Singhs finished their ardas Jaikaray began to bellow through the skies. Upon hearing the thunderous voices of these two brave hearts of Punjab the Indian Army directed their assault and fire towards the fields the Jaikaray were coming from. As bullets began to fly once again, the Jaikaras continued. The Indian Commanders knew that the Singhs had almost run out of ammunition. As a consequence of this another bulletproof tractor was readied and sent onto the battlefield. Upon seeing the tractor approaching, Bhai Gurnam Singh Ji who was badly injured ran out of the fields he had taken cover in as he let loose on his AK47 rifle. On seeing this Singh of Guru Sahib make his final stand, even the commanders of the Indian Army stood in awe. Shaheedi In the end Bhai Gurnam Singh Ji ran out of bullets. This Singh had terrorized the Indian Army so much that even as he stood in the battlefield without any ammunition the soldiers were too scared to approach him. It was only after the ‘brave’ soldiers of Hindustan had made sure that Bhai Sahib posed no threat to them, that they mustered the courage to apprehend this Saint-soldier. In a shameful ploy to kill Bhai Seetal Singh Ji, the Indian Army used the fatally wounded Bhai Gurnam Singh Ji as a human shield. As Bhai Sahib watched his brother in arms walk on the battlefield with Indian soldiers hiding behind him, he knew that if he began to shoot, Bhai Gurnam Singh Ji would be injured in the cross fire. The Indian Army took full advantage of this beautiful love between brothers as they riddled Bhai Seetal Singh Matewal’s chest with hundreds of bullets. As Bhai Sahib began to make his final journey back to the home of his king he shouted out, ‘Khalistan Zindabad’, one last time. The Aftermath After this battle in which thousands of Indian Soldiers were sent to the court of Dharam Raj, the Indian Armed Forces sent a group of soldiers to Bhai Seetal Singh Ji’s house. When the soldiers reached Bhai Sahib’s house they found Bhai Sahib’s two younger brothers, Bhai Amreek Singh and Bhai Darshan Singh, along with Bhai Sahib’s wife, Bibi Narinder Kaur. All three Gursikhs were beaten up before they were arrested. They were then taken to a police detention center, where only Guru Sahib knows what was done to them. These beloved Sikhs of Guru Sahib were never seen again as they took their place at the feet of Guru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaj. Bhai Sahib’s two young sons were given to his younger brother’s widow who still looks after them to this day.

  6. I understand where you're coming from, but do you see Bhai Taru Singh Ji joining a low group like the EDL? Or any shaheed Kaur or Singh for that matter?

  9. It is a totally false argument that Sikhism believes all paths lead to the same goal and thus all religions are equal. From its very inception, Gurmat (the Guru’s Path) has been declared a unique and distinct path. Bhai Gurdaas jee writes: “In the world, Guru Nanak Sahib Ji established the authority (of his doctrines) and started a Path (of religion), devoid of any impurity.” (Vaar 1, Pauree 45 – Bhai Gurdaas Ji) The claim that all paths lead to the same goal is covered in Bhai Sahib Randheer Singh ji’s book ‘Anhad Shabad Dasam Duar - Open discussion of unstruck ethereal music at tenth door of divine-abode’ - pages 46-47: QUOTE "The Liberation-state of Gurmat is unique and different in concept from other religious faiths. Liberation is not the mere ending-up of the human body or just an escapement of the soul from its bodily cage. Some envisage liberation as riddance from afflictions associated with the human body. They believe liberation is unattainable as so long as the soul is caged within the human body. Others identify liberation as the fulfillment of their desires to abide in a heavenly abode. However, this kind of liberation falls very short compared to the Gurmat concept of liberation. Liberation is not the banishment of imagined pain and sorrow, nor can it be described as the disassociation of the soul-being from materialism. Yogic faith conceives liberation as empty consciousness through meditational practices that bear no semblance to the Gurmat concept. Vedantic faith believes in the removal of duality to arrive at oneness with The Absolute, in order to be liberated. Buddhism believes liberation to be a state of total renunciation of desire and negative thought - Nirvana. Jainism considers that non-violence and non-killing leads to liberation. Mere escape from transmigration is not the essence of True Liberation....Gurmat considers the above listed forms of liberation as halfway and incomplete. The swan-bird Gurmukhs who are blessed with Divine Enlightenment reject all these forms. They merge with The Divine Immaculate Light whilst living; they envision The Glorious Lord in full Divine Splendor. Gurmukhs are sustained by the nourishment of Naam-Divine, while they behold The Lord at all times. They find True Liberation within this Love-Divine...Their Liberation lies in the sole occupation of Naam-Devotion, in accordance with Gurmat. This supreme state is reached through complete dedication, when one takes refuge within The Guru...what is not sought is a form of liberation devoid of God-Realisation." If we use this viewpoint to analyse some mainstream schools of thought, we may reach the following conclusions: In Hindu or Vedantic traditions, Liberation = various states according to different schools i.e. freedom from transmigration, realisation of self as God (Sohang) etc. In Buddhism, Liberation = escape from desires / realisation of the nature of self / Nirvana. In Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, Liberation = heavenly abode In Sikhism, Liberation = absorption into Waheguru/Naam, the destruction of self/ego, the merging of Aatma (soul) into ParAatma (Universal Soul) - all of which can only be achieved through complete dedication to The Guru's teachings. The concept of equality exemplified by Sikhi is not the result of a debate concerning religions. The Sikh concept of equality is an inward and outward acceptance of all and seeing everyone as a soul with the same divine father, rather than religious labels, which results directly from the practice of Sri Guru Granth Sahib jee's teachings. When it comes to true enlightenment, or liberation, Guru jee is very clear about its unique nature and definition within Gurmat; and in doing so we are taught who and what really is The True Teacher. Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji over and over stresses the importance of "Gurmat Naam". Without Gurmat Naam no one can merge in Waheguru or reach ‘Sach Khand’ (the spiritual Realm of Truth). In the House of Guru Nanak only Naam is found, the only tool to experience and merge into God.

  18. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nCkfO1h1Hcc In 1964 11 Sikhs were gunned down at Paonta Sahib (Himachal Pradesh) by the Mahant's henchmen. The sangat of Poanta Sahib had requested Jathedar Baba Harbhajan Singh Ji (the one before Baba Nihal Singh Jee)to visit the Gurdwara. They complained that the residing masand was abusing the Gurdwara premises through drinking, raping women that came alone, and making prostitutes dance inside. After several such requests Babaji decided to visit Poanta Sahib accompanied by 13 GurSikhs. They left, from Gurdwara Haria Welan Hoshiarpur, riding horses and horse drawn carts. When they arrived near Gurdwara Poanta Sahib, two GurSikhs carried Babaji's message for the masand requesting initiation of a Akhand Path at the Gurdwara. The masand did not give a definitive answer, instead assured to respond before the next morning. Meanwhile the masand confided with the local police chief, one of his corrupt friends who endorsed and permitted his evil acts. Babaji started the Akhand Path next morning which proceeded uninterrupted for 2 days. On the 2nd day, the masand came with the police. They arrested Babaji who was outside at that time and fired at the GurSikhs inside, who were conducting the Akhand Path. The GurSikhs had no guns. For they had not come with the intent to fight, but rather to hear the sangat's concerns. As a result they were brutally massacred. Eleven died and two survived. As each Pathi was shot while reciting the Guru Granth Sahib, another simply pushed his body and continued the uninterrupted recitation of Sri Guru Granth Sahib. Nihal Singh, 21 at the time, continued with his choar sewa (even when he had been shot 3 times) until the last GurSikh was shot. As the Akhand Path was interrupted, Nihal Singh finally fell. The only survivor was the youngest GurSikh, a 11 year old, who was found hiding behind a nagara (drums). Besides him all others were presumed dead. It wasn't until the bodies were being loaded up in a cart that a small child saw Nihal Singh breath and informed the local sikhs. The local sikhs who had gathered by now, screamed to get him some medical attention. Fortunately they succeeded in their efforts. He received medical attention and survived with Vaaheguru's grace. He was subsequently honored by many gurdwaras as Jinda-Shaheed Jathedar. The masand was finally removed. Akhand paths are held each year in the commemoration of this event.

  24. Follow For Daily Updates on Twitter @TodayInSikhHist 15 MAY 1629 Mukhlis Khan reaches Amritsar with his forces to fight Guru Har Gobind Sahib. 1765 Conquest of Lahore by the Khalsa Forces. Ahmad Shah reached Lahore via Eminabad during his 7th invasion. Sikhs attacked his outposts conquered Lahore and assembled at Amritsar. 1850 Bhai Maharaj Singh was deported to Singapore aboard ship named "Mohammed Shah" guarded by soldiers of the 70th regiment. ==> Bhai MAHARAJ SINGH: Born in village Rabbon, near Malud, Ludhiana Dist. Parents named him Nihal Singh. As a young lad, he went to stay at Bhai Bir Singh's Dera at Naurangabad. Did sewa for many years, took Amrit at the hands of Bhai Bir Singh, was given the name Bhagwan Singh, and eventually became his chela. The Dera was practically a military camp with 1200 musketmen and 3000 horsemen. It had always been a sanctuary for political refugees. It became the centre of the Sikh revolt against Dogra dominance over the Punjab. Hira Singh Dogra, the chief minister of the Punjab, attacked the Dera in 1844 with 20000 troops and 50 cannon. Several hundred Sikhs, including General Attar Singh Sandhanwalla, Prince Kashmira Singh and Bhai Bir Singh were killed. Bhagwan Singh became the head of the Dera. The British, who had been waiting for the right moment to intervene and establish their authority, made their move in 1847. They deported Rani Jinda. The Sikh chiefs revolted, including Bhagwan Singh. He was welcomed by Sikhs saying "Ah Wo Maharaj", because of his sanctity, thus, soon he came to be referred to as Bhai Maharaj Singh. During the second Anglo-Sikh war that followed, at the battles of Ram Nagar, Chillianwall and Gujrat, he was very active providing personal inspiration and organizing supplies for the Sikh Army. Soon after the defeat at Gujrat, all the other Sikh chiefs had been captured or had surrendered. By the way, Bhai Maharaj Singh was one of the first people of Punjab to launch a freedom movement in Punjab after the British took over Punjab. He said in 1849: "There will be another National War, let all the true Sikhs rise on the day fixed." "Bhai Mahararaj Singh, a Sikh priest of reputed sanctity, and of great influence, the first man who raised the standards of rebellion beyound the confines of Multan in 1848, and the only leader of note who did not lay down his arms to Sir Walter Gilberts at Rawalpindi." - Henry Lawrence, Resident of Lahore Bhai Maharaj Singh's other name was Bhai Nihal Singh. His belonged to a line of Sikh revolutionaries who wanted to return to the creed of the Gurus. The pinions of this movement were Baba Bhag Singh of Pothohar, his worthy and more popular disciple Bhai Bir Singh of Naurangabad in Amritsar and the latter's successor Bhai Maharaj Singh. Bhai Maharaj Singh plan of action against the vastly superior British was framed in the jungles of the Chumb Valley. 1. To rescue Maharajah Dalip Singh from Lahore Fort. 2. To organize a United Front of all anti-British forces. 3. Organized disruption by subversion and suprise attacks on British treasuries and cantonments. He displayed superb military generalship and knowledge of tactical warfare. What sustained him was his rich spiritual heritage. The British reacted by moving Dalip Singh to securer confinement, encouraged Muslim zealots to locate him for them and offered hugh rewards for information of his whereabouts. On the other hand, the British tried to portray him as a religious leader to lower his following as a Military or political leader. It was the British officers who coined the term "Karnivala" since it they did not want to admit the failures of their intelligence. Bhai Maharaj Singh, undoubtedly, was certainly a "Miracle Maker" since it became impossible for the British to arrest him. This was due to the support given to him by the public that he was able to hide among the people. He was captured together with 21 unarmed followers on Dec, 28 1849, near Adampur. Vansttart, the Deputy Commissioner of Jallundar who arrested him, wrote. "The Guru is no ordinary man. He is to the natives what Jesus was to the most zealous of Christians. His miracles were seen by tens of thousands, and are more implicitly believed than those worked by the ancient prophets." Even more generous was Mcleod, Commissioner of the Doab, " had he remained at large, but a little longer . more outrages of an alarming character would have been attempted . the result of which, .would perhaps be impossible to foretell." It was found too risky to put Bhai Maharaj Singh on trial in India and he was deported to Singapore. He arrived on the "Mahomed Shaw", on 9th July 1850, together with a disciple, Khurruck Singh, and moved to Outram Jail. He was kept in solitary confinement in a cell 14 by 15 feet, which, because of the walling up of the windows, had been "further rendered dark, dinghy and absolutely unhealthy" (Secret Consultation Papers, 28th Feb 1851, #52-57). He was practically blind within three years, developed cancer on his tongue, and had rheumatic swellings and pains in his feet and ankles. The Civil Surgeon, Singapore, recommended that Bhai Maharaj Singh be allowed an occasional walk in the open, but this was turned down by the Government of India. The result was that his health continued to deteriorate, and about two months before his death, his neck and tongue became so swollen that it became very difficult for him to swallow. Bhai Maharaj Singh died on 5th July 1856. He was cremated on a plot of land outside the prison, presumebably by Khurruck Singh, who also died in prison later. Locals, mainly Hindu Tamils began to revere the spot, marking it with stones. Offerings of flowers found their way there, Sikhs and Muslims joined in. The Sikhs placed a structure on this spot, turning it into a small temple. In 1966, the Sri Guru Granth Sahib was moved to the Silat Road Temple. Only the stones were re-erected outside the temple. Large numbers of Sikhs and non-Sikhs come to the samadh to worship, with offerings of valuables, a practice against Sikh tenets. Bhai Maharaj Singh was the head of the Order now known as the Hoti Mardan Valli Sant Khalsa Sampardai, recent illustrious heads were Sant Attar Singh and Sant Isher Singh. He was thus not only a revolutionary fighter but also a recognized religious personage of very high standing. Many believe him to be a "Karniwala". -Source - extracted from 'Bhai Maharaj Singh Saint-Soldier' by Choor Singh, Singapore.

  26. LAHORE: The Sikh community has alleged that meat, prohibited in their religion, was cooked at Gurdwara Panja Sahib in Hassanabdal, one of the holiest places in Sikhism. The community has accused the Evacuee Trust Property Board (ETPB), the custodian of their religious places, of trying to dump the issue rather than taking steps against those responsible. “We demand that an FIR be lodged and the culprits who cooked meat in our Gurdwara be penalised,” community leader Sardar Bishon Singh told The Express Tribune. “Meat, eggs and tobacco are prohibited in Sikhism like pork is in Islam,” he said. “The caretaker, along with local Muslim staff, cooked meat in Gurdwara Panja Sahib on Sunday,” said a member of Gurdwara Panja Sahib Sewadar Society Sardar Pretam Singh. “It is unfortunate for Sikhs that custodians of their religious places, who are almost all Muslims, have been involved in violation of their faith,” said Bishon Singh. Pretam Singh added that he caught one staff member red-handed with meat in the Gurdwara’s kitchen. “When I complained to the caretaker of the Gurdwara, Memrooz Khan, he rebuffed my plea,” he said. ETPB’s additional secretary and deputy administrator then conducted an inquiry and transferred all staff from the Gurdwara. “We demanded that all employees involved in the act should at least be suspended, but ETPB refused to do so,” Rajan Singh said. Sardar Bishon Singh said that anyone who desecrates a religious place should be tried under section 295 of the Pakistan Penal Code, he added. ETPB’s Deputy Administrator Faraz Abbas told The Express Tribune that he was not sure whether anyone cooked meat at the Gurdwara, but on complaints by the community, all staff has been transferred and new people have been appointed. 30. Some people are talking absolute rubbish here, unless you have married someone from India you don't REALLY know what it's like, regardless of how many people you know who have. All this talk about treat her like this, that or the other is pure rubbish. Yes there are people who exploit, abuse and don't deserve your time but the only way to find out is by living your life with her. Treating her mean, assuming she's out to get and what not is not a sound foundation for a relationship. Fact is you're married now and unless you give this lady and your marriage a chance, you'll never really know. Treat others as you'd like to be treated, why treat her based upon perception or assumption. If nothing else works, think about how our Guru Sahib treated their wife, simple.

  45. During Partition, Sikhs were caught off guard by trusting useless leaders. If it wasnt for all the Sikhs who had been involved in World War 2 we would have probably got massacred whilst muslim communities in East Punjab would have remained intact. So people can say what they want to YubaCitySingh, but at least he's got a plan. To YCS: if you join the army make sure it fits into the greater plan of how you want your career. Plenty of Sikhs have thought like you before, but lets face it, there will be no major war in Punjab for some time as people dont have the stomach for it (well the ones who will be affected dont). In the USA the army pays for your degrees, something they dont do in the UK. Take the opportunity with both hands if its what you want and you are willing to make it work and you know that you will be set afterwards. Good luck.

  46. It has to be said, any SIkh travelling from the West to Pakistan would perk the interests of intelligence agencies, it's not as if they havent been keeping tabs since the War on Terror started. Some British papers have even quoted sources of american intelligence agencies who know where Sikhs have been going in Pakistan to get training. And to say it openly on a site which is visited by numerous anti-Sikh types. Compromised or what. Add to what YCS said, the number of SIkh girls in Pakistan trapped there by there boyfriends who took them there. Some even end up working as prostitutes in Lahore for foreign diplomats and businessmen from places like China, Saudi Arabia etc. Any Sikh who puts their trust in Pakistan is enough for me to know that the Khalistan Movement has a long way to go to before it achieves anything.
