No one knows this secret, of when the Messenger of Death will seize you and take you away. All your weeping and wailing then is false. In an instant, you become a stranger. You obtain exactly what you have longed for. Says Nanak, in the fourth watch of the night, O mortal, the Grim Reaper has harvested your field. Siree Raag, First Mehl: ਪਹਿਲੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਰੈਣਿ ਕੈ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਬਾਲਕ ਬੁਧਿ ਅਚੇਤੁ ॥ In the first watch of the night, O my merchant friend, your innocent mind has a child-like understanding. You drink milk, and you are fondled so gently, O my merchant friend, the mother and father love their child. The mother and father love their child so much, but in Maya, all are caught in emotional attachment. By the good fortune of good deeds done in the past, you have come, and now you perform actions to determine your future. Without the Lord's Name, liberation is not obtained, and you are drowned in the love of duality. Says Nanak, in the first watch of the night, O mortal, you shall be saved by remembering the Lord. In the second watch of the night, O my merchant friend, you are intoxicated with the wine of youth and beauty. Day and night, you are engrossed in sexual desire, O my merchant friend, and your consciousness is blind to the Naam. The Lord's Name is not within your heart, but all sorts of other tastes seem sweet to you. You have no wisdom at all, no meditation, no virtue or self-discipline; in falsehood, you are caught in the cycle of birth and death. Pilgrimages, fasts, purification and self-discipline are of no use, nor are rituals, religious ceremonies or empty worship. O Nanak, emancipation comes only by loving devotional worship; through duality, people are engrossed in duality. In the third watch of the night, O my merchant friend, the swans, the white hairs, come and land upon the pool of the head. Youth wears itself out, and old age triumphs, O my merchant friend; as time passes, your days diminish. At the last moment, you repent-you are so blind!-when the Messenger of Death seizes you and carries you away. You kept all your things for yourself, but in an instant, they are all lost. Your intellect left you, your wisdom departed, and now you repent for the evil deeds you committed. Says Nanak, O mortal, in the third watch of the night, let your consciousness be lovingly focused on God. In the fourth watch of the night, O my merchant friend, your body grows old and weak. Your eyes go blind, and cannot see, O my merchant friend, and your ears do not hear any words. Your eyes go blind, and your tongue is unable to taste; you live only with the help of others. With no virtue within, how can you find peace? The self-willed manmukh comes and goes in reincarnation. When the crop of life has matured, it bends, breaks and perishes; why take pride in that which comes and goes? Says Nanak, O mortal, in the fourth watch of the night, the Gurmukh recognizes the Word of the Shabad. Your breath comes to its end, O my merchant friend, and your shoulders are weighed down by the tyrant of old age. Not one iota of virtue came into you, O my merchant friend; bound and gagged by evil, you are driven along. One who departs with virtue and self-discipline is not struck down, and is not consigned to the cycle of birth and death. The Messenger of Death and his trap cannot touch him; through loving devotional worship, he crosses over the ocean of fear. He departs with honor, and merges in intuitive peace and poise; all his pains depart. Says Nanak, when the mortal becomes Gurmukh, he is saved and honored by the True Lord. ||5||2||

  3. Other then warning him that Guru teaches us is that any happiness within the world is always short lived and ultimately we must leave this world, and leave it all behind and to encourage him to be thankful everyday to Vaheguru for everything he has been blessed with. there is not much else you can do to convince him, and he is being very honest this is pretty much what everyone does, including religious people, when his partner passes away, or his time comes then everything he has will be slipping through his fingers.... Vaheguru is the ultimate teacher of all and he teaches us through things that happen in our life - our lives are filled with happiness and sorrow at different times and event teaches us something this man's karam is his own and his lessons will be his own and they will happen in their own time. We should not look down on him or insult him, as we have all been on our own journeys of realisation and still are - there were many things before that we did not understand but understand now - there are many things that we ourself do not realise at this moment in time, but maybe in time we will. ultimately the Gurus words are very powerful, they can change peoples minds there are countless other shabads like this http://www.sikhitothemax.com/page.asp?ShabadID=124

  4. Just because we have electricity now we should not dismiss the importance of candlelight and divas/lanterns They may have no spiritual value but they were extremely important during the gurus period in the absence of electricity, society would find it very hard to function for a major part of the day if it were not for candlelight and fuelled lanterns. countless nights of dictation and writing of gurbani would not have been possible - and to scoff at it now, just because we have electricity and artificial lighting is not right. we shouldn't just abandon every tradition as being ritualistic, The Gurus respected old traditions but rejected the idea that they alone will get you closer to God Guru Nanak still placed a nareeyal(coconut) and paisey and did parkarma of guru Angad Dev ji - and for us to say that nareeyals have no significance to us is like saying Karah Prashad is futile

  5. People change as circumstances changes..tell him never be proud of anything, tables can turn against anyone anytime. In one split second, millionaire can turn beggar and in one split second, beggar can become millionaire. Tell this person even world super power- USA admits that there is no certainty in anything have many hiccups in economy, have back up plans , strategy risk management, fire drills, earth quakes drills, drills over drills, mock up evacuation even then when sh1t hits the fan, lifes are lost, damages are done. Tell this person to zoom out from earth in visualization and then tell him to find himself and his accomplishment...he cannot even locate his country, state, or his tribe let alone his family...all that is gone like a dream. During death, one whole life event flashes and ends in less than 20 secs.

  6. Some kid whose father is a decorated General in the armed forces goes to the same school where the son of a stick-wielding police constable (havaldaar) also studies. Now which one of these 2 would be more proud of his father? Obviously the son of a General! How does this make the havaldaars son feel? Obviously intimidated and perhaps even inferior! How do such people then react? They try every attempt to mock or humiliate someone who is way ahead of them in any aspect life. Some kid loves his father to death because he knows his father sacrificed so much just to give him a decent upbringing and a good education. Another kid doesnt even know who his father was, because his father left his mother before this kid was even born. Now which of these 2 will never tolerate any insult to his father? Obviously the first kid, because he owes everything to his father! This is the difference between the Sikhs and others, and this is the reason why were facing all these various sorts of troubles all over this world. Whether its the problems we face at the hands of Hindus in India, or Muslims in Islamic countries, or gorey/kaale/others in Western countries, this difference is the central issue at the core. We are proud of our Guru Sahibaan, our Puratan Singhs, our mahaan Sants, Sipahis and our Shaheeds. We are proud of their glorious legacy. Those who dont have such a history, or have a shameful history full of oppression and barbarity will always have a problem with us just like the son of a havaldaar has with the son of a General. The Generals son has pictures of his dad in uniform decked with medals. The son of a havaldaar knows his father doesnt even have a rifle. The Generals son can tell stories of how his dad won so many battles and faced the enemy fearlessly. What will the havaldaars son say? How his father beat up an innocent protester? Or how his havaldaar dad got slapped by a girl because he passed a lewd remark? What else can such people do besides cracking Sardar jokes? We are proud of our turbans, our beards, our 5 kakaars, because these are blessings of our Guru Sahibaan. Those who dont even know whom to worship/follow, what do they have in life that they can value? They are like that kid who never knew who/what his father was/is? Thus they have a problem with our turban, and they want it taken off at all airport checkpoints. They have a problem with our kara/kirpan and want these removed before we board buses. Why they have this problem? Because these poor fellows are like that fatherless kid who never knew what it means to get a gift from a dad. They dont have a blessing like Sikhi in their lives, they dont have a father like Kalgidhar Patshah Ji, they dont have anything such as the Khalsa appearance or the 5 kakaars which they can call as gifts. But since we do, they have a problem with these. What else can they do except try to rob us of these? Khalsa ji, do not take Sikhi for granted. Please dont! This whole world is full of ashamed and fatherless people who do not have anything to be proud of, or anything to value in their lives. We have everything! Our Guru Sahibaan, the priceless jewel of Gurbani, our Puratan Singhs/Kaurs, our itihaas, our Gurmat philosophy, these are all like those medals which the Generals son is so proud of. These are all those gifts which a loving fathers beloved son holds near and dear to his heart and soul. Those who dont have such a father, or those who dont even know about their father, they always have, they still do, and they always will have a problem with the Khalsa! Mehtab Singh Nov. 4th, 2013

  7. Yogis knew about body science and did yogic practice to awaken kundalini which they consider is coiled under spine. They did balance energy channels in body to awaken kundalini. When kundalini is awakened they felt bliss. But Guru sahib rejected that path.Guru sahibans told us that for a Gursikh to awaken kundalini is Naam japna in company of sat sangat .hence we need not to follow intricate yogic procedures. Kundalini surjhi satsangat parmanand guru mukhi macha Kundalini is awakened in company of satsangat Through word of Guru they enjoy parmanand (ultimate bliss) SGGS ji

  10. Block 32 in Trilokpuri is well known whenever we talk about 1984. Around 500 Sikhs were massacred in just this one block in less than half an hour. However, it is also known that they put up a tough fight for the mob before the deceptive cops came and asked them to go back to their houses and also disarmed them. These Sikhs trusted the cops and the result is in front of us. In the neighboring block, the Sikhs refused to trust the police and were able to save themselves upto a better extent as compared to Block 32. A similar incident happened in Sarai Rohilla area of Delhi where the Gurdwara Sahib was attacked 8 times on a single day from morning to afternoon but each time the Sikhs pushed back the killer mobs. Khalsa ji, what have we learnt from this? What is our biggest weapon which our enemies fear and cannot fight? Its our UNITY! Sorry I do not have any strong rhetorical words as I am not a politician, but the evidence is right in front of you. Whenever we have been united and have put up a strong front, our enemies have been shocked. Whether it was Chamkaur Sahib, or Saragarhi, or the battle of Amritsar of June 1984, or some of these incidents of November 1984, they provide us a priceless lesson. UNITY! If these examples are old and outdated for you, no problem. Look what happened in March 2012. Bhai Rajoana was to be hanged on March 31st, 2012. Sikhs from all over the world UNITED for maybe a week or a little more than a week. The might of the united Sikh qaum was strong enough to make the Indian government put Bhai Rajoanas hanging on hold. I vividly remember how firmly ALL Sikhs came together and roared in one voice. THIS is EXACTLY what our enemies ALWAYS fear and ALWAYS try to damage, our UNITY! Now the truth is before your eyes. Stay UNITED! I agree we have several internal issues which we cannot resolve any time soon. It may take a good couple of generations to find a resolution to our internal issues. But please, take a lesson from our Misls, our ancestors who like normal human beings did have differences with each other over several issues, but when it came to the Panth, when it was about fighting the enemy, they all UNITED. Who do you think the 40 Singhs were at the battle of Chamkaur Sahib? They all came from different so-called castes and even different parts of what is today India! Yet, they put all that aside and embraced Shaheedi together. Today we sing their glory but forget one of the strongest emotion that kept them going, UNITY! Mehtab Singh Nov. 4th, 2013

Drunkard:i took amrit long time ago and now im just wearping this. i have never seen him wear a kirpan . at this point i was really mad Me: take your gatra off him: yes i will soon me: NOW!! you are running our image . my dad started butting in dad: oi you go home Me:*stood there and asked him to take his kirpan off* couple of times. after that the drunkard went . i asked him again to take it off , he said he will even if right now , it seems matter is solved but due to my dad's butting in . i was not able to see him take it off !! All of the times i try best but i feel like i am putting our pita sahib e kamaal Sri Guru Gobind Singh ji down and feel sad due to things happening around me . and lot of times even though matter seems resolved i end up with guilt inside me . that there might be something i didnt do right . How to solve matters like this? i wanted to slap that <banned word filter activated> but i held back due to my dad being there . most of the times matter is solved but situations like these make me feel ful of guilt anger and uneasy for long time and ending up asking for forgivness to shah e shehanshaah . i did not start topic to boost anything just to tell how i've been feeling and feel bhul chuk maff ji WaheguruJiKaKhalsa!!WaheguruJiKiFateh!!

Bhai sahib is asserting futility of these rituals - whereas our raagis sing as though Guru Sahib (most people dont know its bhai Guradaas to begin with) is encouraging sikhs to light deevas on Deevali...... Jahan Gyan Tahan Dharam Hai | Jahann Jhooth Tahan Paap || Also we call it Bandi Chor divas , which is also a myth but thats whole another topic.

Analysis is the opposite pole of feeling. I worship my mother, I love my wife, but what would they be if I wished to know them by analysis!” Professor Puran Singh Ji I see this happening a lot, people try to explain and analyze every little thing from different states to wanting to explain every little thing a Sikh experiences. Posting it here because I see it happening a lot on this website as well. I added Professor Puran Singh Ji's book to my reading list and will be reading it soon. Thoughts?

  26. It was Bhai Veer singh's mystic personality that brought him back to sikhi. He had renounced sikhi and joined Budhism became mona ghona. He was called to Sikh educational conference at Gujranwala and made a guest of honour. He was asked to speak. He spoke and said" I do not belong to your religion.I do not know why you have called me here.I am a budhist." Saying that he sat down beside Bhai Veer singh ji.Bhai Veer singh ji started rolling his cropped hair with his hand like a comb and Puran singh started crying.Bhai sahib continued doing that and Puran singh kept on crying. That was when he came back to sikhi. This is how a sikh of high avastha can influence others.

  31. There's two ways to look at it: Some analyse to truly comprehend (and occasionally it does go over the head of most people such as myself), whilst there's a few who analyse and over-expand to make themselves feel superior to the simple folk. I guess it depends a lot on the intention.

  37. People forgot who they really were, started changing their identities by doing sunnats and mundans, corrupted by five vices. So Akaal purkh ji came on earth as Guru Sahibaan to remind them who they really are and showing them the right way of living. So people who realized this, came back to their real identities, which is "Sikh". It is as simple as that.

  39. Source : -------------- In the second world war, the Sikhs fought in the British army and many Sikhs gave their lives fighting for Britain. Many Sikhs fought in Europe too and the Sikhs were recognized for their outstanding performance in the war. After the war was over, the Sikh regiments were brought back to India by road. As thus, they had to pass through Afghanistan and present day Pakistan, to arrive in India. When the Sikh regiment reached Jamraud, the Sikhs requested the officer in charge to stay at Jamraud as they wanted to visit the Gurudwara that stands there in the sweet memory of the greatest general, Sardar Hari Singh Nalwa. The officers agreed and the Sikhs stayed there for some days. As the military had stationed in Jamraud, the Sikhs took liberty to visit adjoining places. The residents of Jamraud did not know too much about the Sikhs and showed curiosity to know about them. One such person was the wife of a Pathan general called Abdul Qiyoom Khan. She had not seen the Sikhs before and when she saw singhs with parkaash beards and well-built bodies, she asked her husband who they were. Abdul Qiyoom Khan praised the Sikhs and their bravery just as a big-hearted warrior would praise another warrior. He told her about the background of the Sikhs and how they were known for their courage and strength. The pathaans too are known for their bravery and if we read the history we find out that the residents of this area that was known as Gandhaar Desh (mother of Duryodhan, Gandhari was from this area) at the time of Mahabharat. These people ruled India for many years and they were stopped by only one person and that person was Sardar Hari Singh Nalwa. For this reason, the old people of that area had respect and considerable fear for the Sikhs. Anyway, after hearing the stories of bravery of Sikhs, from her husband, she jokingly told her husband that the reason she married him was because of his bravery. The pathaan, when he heard this, got hurt and with hurt ego, immediately shot back at his wife saying that he did realize that these Sikhs were brave but they were not more brave than him. He said that he would prove this to his wife. Saying this, the pathaan immediately arrived at the place where the Sikh regiment was stationed. He went to the officer in-charge and challenged the Sikhs for a one-on-one fight. Abdul Qiyoom Khan was a very accomplished warrior of his area and was the sardaar of the tribal army in his area. He was close to 6'5" tall and had a huge body. When the Sikhs heard his challenge, they started thinking how to respond, since this happened so fast. When he challenged again, a Singh by the name of Kartar Singh accepted his challenge. Kartar Singh was not very tall in height but he had a well-built body. It was decided that the fight would take place the following day at so and so time. The next day, the pathaan arrived a little early along with his supporters. When the time of the match came, Kartar Singh did not arrive on time. The pathaans thought that he had ran away, scared of fighting Abdul Qiyoom Khan. This incident was recorded by the the Englishman who acted as a referee in the competition. His name was M. Crafts. Anyway, a Sikh soldier was dispatched to get Bhai Kartar Singh. When the soldier arrived at this tent, he found him standing in ardaas. Unaware of his surroundings, Kartar Singh urged Guru Gobind Singh Ji for strength and said that he did not have any strength of his own and that he was relying fully on Guru Sahib alone. Doing ardaas along these lines, Bhai Kartar Singh arrived at the place of competition. Most independent observers had thought that this match would not last more than 10 minutes and will result in the death and defeat of Kartar Singh. Both warriors were allowed to use any weapon they wanted and they both used swords to fight. They both were very skilled in fighting. They both did attacks on each other and very diligently saved the attacks of their opponent. The singh was fighting so well, that the pathaan who had thought of crushing him in minutes was taken aback by the fierce resistance posed by Kartar Singh. After half an hour, when no one emerged as a clear winner, the competition was briefly stopped for about 10 minutes. The pathaan came to his side of the ring and drank grapes juice. The singh on the other hand only drank water and closed his eyes to thank Guru Kalgidhar Sache Patshah, who let gave him the strength to face a strong opponent as the pathaan. When they came back after the second round, the pathaan got a little impatient and challenged Kartar Singh to save his attack. When a person loses his cool in a battle or competition, he or she is bound to lose a little bit of focus and concentration. This is what happened to the pathaan. He did a great attack on Kartar Singh who in turn very diligently stopped it and did a counter attack, which resulted in the pathaan getting seriously injured, thus ending the competition in Kartar Singh's favour. After the competition Kartar Singh quietly left the place and while the Sikhs were celebrating he went to his tent to perform an ardaas of thanking Guru Sahib for his victory. The words on his lips were: BHAYEE JEET MERI, KIRPA KAAL TERI|| (O Waheguru, I attained victory because of your grace.)

  41. There are many disadvantages (limiting factors) if people infer that sackhand is a place where one goes to with identity intact then the (jeev or sukhsham sareer) will be limited in size unless they totally occupy everything and others there would be consumed/crowded by each other, limited power etc they are bound by location and are NOT omnipresent (as it is made out to be the earth is not sachkand but a separate khand). 'They' are not limitless this implies a disadvantage compared to what I understand and what gurmat believes which is that sackhand is everything no limits - omnipotent and omnipresent - Only God is and NO OTHER. Only truth (sackhand) people saying that sachkand is some sort of place do not know the infinite potential of gurmat naam. For (God) sachkand (OBJECTIVE TRUTH) to be a place (which it is not) it must be acknowledged by an individual (I) e.g. I am seeing that floating gurdwara in sachkand. There has to be duality between the perceiver and the object.' Gurbani is against dual consciousness please do a search on ‘durmat’. Essentially in any place where 'one’s' attentive consciousness is still stuck in form 'name and shape' is an illusion (maya). How will one tell the difference between themselves and God? Also the false notion of identity is kept of the person in sachkand then surely they still would have a mind and we are all know a mind is a limited instrument in itself I.E you can only have one thought at one time and have a limited capacity of knowledge. Also with any name and form it is bound by time, which we all know waheguru cannot be (akaal moorat) because if any action that occurs in sachkand (place) will occur in apperceived time i.e there would be a memory of past, present actions because if there were no actions in that place then sackhand would have no action, no one speaking etc. This identity is only a burden and a disadvantage. Also the fear of losing consciousness is downfall amongst seekers – they don’t want identity to be gone and want to remain eternally to experience the ‘bliss’. But this is inaccurate and involves blind faith on a false notion of consciousness being permanent. Scientifically or with veechar one needs to look into how the consciousness arouse. For consciousness to be permanent it has to be eternal and remain 24/7 throughout every moment/second. We know this can be proved wrong because it does not remain as in swoon/ unconscious/ deep sleep or in subconscious there is NO consciousness and the world is NOT. So then we can argue that if consciousness itself is temporary and the same consciousness (person) goes to sachkand then how can we have a full experience of sackhand when our own identity is our downfall for ever lasting experience. Beyond this who remains to enjoy the anand.... Like in deep sleep there is no consciousness and some people are trying to make there consciousness permanent thinking that it is eternal when in deep sleep and even subconsciously it is not. Letting the unconscious and subconscious (consciousness is a slave to the subconscious) take over means a death an annilation of experience. Really we are always dead it is the conscious part of the brain (reaction between neurotransmitters), which only comes temporarily that gives the inference of individuality and doership - that I exist and I WILL GO SACKHAND. It's all utter rubbish there is no one to go sachkand as there is only sachkand. People try to make the I (consciousness) eternal so 'they' can experience the anand and go sachkand. When in reality 'they' are an illusion – and the illusion is trying to escape the illusion – what a paradox! Basically no one wants to die but only dying is eternal!!! Another factor is that the mind is not permanent and it is made from experiences that one gets during their lifetime and something that is not eternal cannot have a permanent identity here after – to prove this point a blind person from birth has no visual thoughts throughout their life he/she just apperceives darkness. While a deaf person from birth can see form and name but has never heard a sound. So this shows that one’s identity are made from this lifetimes experiences. So the mind/memory/ ego are learnt traits that were picked up from the surroundings by the five senses. While the truth (Sachkand) exists prior to the learning period. So since the mind (where identity is made) is temporary it cannot ‘go’ to sachkand. Furthermore some people proclaim that the suksham sareer (mental/astral body) is what is permanent and the sukhsham sareer is the identity of a person with kesh (hair) and this identity is taken to sackhand but this sounds rather presumptuous as Gurbani mentions reincarnation and then was the same sukhsham sareer in a monkey or an ant? Also say one person obtains the human body and but does not realise the Lord and then says he is born again as another human body, which sukhsham sareer has he got and which will enter sachkand? If the sukhsham sareer enters sachkand it must be changeless and permanent and it just doesn’t make sense if the above theory is believed. That would make one particular astral/human identity as a truth, which I believe is subject to guess work, fantasy and opens a doorway to a myriad of questions that sprout from a false believe. Also since God/sachkand resides in ALL even in an agyani (ignorant devoid of naam/Ignorant of God being their true mool) then when kirpa is done the same changeless, permanent avasta must have already been present in the ignorant but missed or ignored, which the concept of non-identity supports while if the perception changed into another realm/place (mistaken as sachkand) then this is a change in ‘reality’, which cannot be correct as God is aadh sach, jugaad sach etc he is always true and ones underlying root prior to perception, learning, inference, apperception and even consciousness must have been true – while sackhand being a place and one retaining identity does not support hence this theory is subject to error. Carrying on with a false pretence of identity remaining then one would further make an assumption that Guru and God are separate. Some people to support this thinking say they are not separate but Guru ji is inside of waheguru and his identity is but is not noticeable to the naked eye. This statement is laughable for any identity to remain the perceiver must have a permanent consciousness and we have already discussed above that this is not possible. Really Guru/Satguru is another word for God (a synonym not a similarity). Some further state that when Waheguru created creation, before it He created Satguru - Waheguru appointed/created Satguru before creating the entire creation. This is false because then there is a notion of two (duality). Mistake is being made between waheguru’s nirgun and sargun aspect making them independently separate – when they are really one and the same and are dependent on each other. Hopefully this write-up has been helpful to prove that identity of one is not and since there is no identity then God/sachkand cannot be place that has independent people in it. However if one still wants it to be a place or wants to believe in permanent identity of individual then carry on doing so as you’ll be seriously disappointed. All in all having an identity is only a limitation and this would make sachkand limited in experience when in reality Gurmat sidhant is much greater than this make belief (manmat) view of sackhand.
