  1. ( I feel a great personal loss. I had the fortune of knowing him though I lost contact with him later on. He helped me at a very critical time of my studies. ) Source: http://www.sikhsiyasat.net/2013/11/26/a-devote-sikh-khalistan-supporter-prof-uday-singh-passed-away/ A devout Sikh, Khalistan supporter, Prof. Uday Singh passed away By Parmjit Singh Published: November 26, 2013 Toronto, Ontario (November 26, 2013): According to a news reported by Sikh24.Com, an online Sikh news portal, Professor Uday Singh of Toronto (Canada) passed away this past Friday, November 22nd after having suffered a heart attack a few days earlier. Professor Uday Singh was well known in the Toronto area for his dedication to teaching children Gurmukhi and Gurmat. For over 40 years Professor Uday Singh taught young children Gurmukhi, Gurmat and Santhia at his Gurmat School, all for free. He was a Math professor at the Laurentian University in Ontario and after retiring he began to focus all his time and attention towards teaching children Gurmukhi. . Prof Uday Singh He started out in a small basement where children would come to learn to read and write Punjabi, he was then able to buy a small unit where he could teach more children, in a school setting. He never asked for a cent from the students in return, all he asked was for them to put in the effort to learn what he was teaching. He taught thousands of students in the Toronto area, many of whom would not be able to read or write Punjabi if not for his efforts. He taught the children of his earlier students, and then their children as well—spanning three generations in the Toronto area. Professor Uday Singh was a companion of the great Sikh, Bhai Sahib Bhai Randhir Singh for 16 years and doing seva in Amrit Sanchars with Bhai Sahib for many years. He then immigrated to Canada in 1961 and had never gone back. He was a staunch supporter of Khalistan, which cost him his Indian passport and the ability to ever go back to his original home. Professor Uday Singh wrote many books during his life, one of them named I made friends with a Saint about his time spent with Bhai Sahib Bhai Randhir Singh. Another of his books was titled The Waning and Waxing of the Khalistan Movement, which is the book he believed cost him his Indian Passport and got him put on the black list. “I have reason to believe it is this book poisoned them against me and my passport was taken away,” he said once. Professor Uday Singh provided financial support to the families of Ajaib Singh Bagri and Inderjit Singh Reyat during their Air India Bombing trials. He believed them to be innocent of the crimes they were accused of, saying in a 2007 interview, “No Sikh is guilty of doing that. The Hindu government got it done.” Professor Uday Singh’s body was draped with the flag of Khalistan at the public viewing—his support for Khalistan was strong throughout his life. He sent monthly checks to the families of Inderjit Singh Reyat and Ajaib Singh Bagri saying, “I have every sympathy with the whole family, especially with the mother who has suffered most. To me they are like a bunch of flowers, very fragrant and very well-behaved and high-quality people to me.” Although he was financially stretched by running his free Gurmat School, he still managed to send monthly checks to the families. Professor Uday Singh was known to live on only 10% of his earnings and give 90% towards Panthik causes. A Sikh is obliged only to give 10% towards the Panth and live off the remaining 90%. Professor Uday Singh’s body was draped with the flag of Khalistan at the public viewing—his support for Khalistan was strong throughout his life. He was an accomplished Gursikh, having Sangat of many renowned Gursikhs in India from the mid-1940s until 1961. After immigrating to Canada in 1961 he dedicated all his time to teaching children Gurmukhi and instilling Gurmat values in them. He will be missed by the thousands of people he taught and met, and thousands more who heard of his undying need to teach the future generations of Sikhs. He had strict adherence to Gurmat and was not afraid to voice his opinion no matter who stood with him or against him. The Panth has lost a great jewel in Professor Uday Singh, however his legacy lives on in the thousands of people he touched and inspired throughout his life.

  4. It's not begging, its called working things out through legal process and framework. Missionaries type khalistanis abroad won't get it, they expect others to launch a war in India from abroad while they are sitting comfy on leather chairs at everyone else expense, throwing everyone else under the bus Don't the high and mighty self righetous sikhs abroad present themselves helplessly infront of hindu indian custom border officials when they go to India at the airport? What happens to their anakh then? that can be considering form of begging too- presenting themselves helplessly infront of indian- hindu customer border officals to let them in the country. The problem is they all talk big, expect others to do seva of all kinds yet they sit abroad milk the system both ways. They neither integrate nor they go back, they segregate themselves, do all kinds of silly things.

  5. I made it very clear in my second sentence who can successfully run Gurdwaras. Since you and others missed it the first time. Here it is again: I have seen personally the Sikh community grow when Amritdhari/Sehajdhari Sikhs take control of a Gurdwara or be another institution like a school. Do you know why they are successful. Not because how smart they are or how well they are able to make connections with stakeholders in the community. But because they bow at the feet of Guru ji and let Guru ji run the show by following instructions. And for your idealism and realism remark. I see how you want to play God because I have been down that road. I have no desire to play God and all I can do is ardas. Akaali Phula Singh ji did ardas, Baba Buddha ji did ardas, Bhai Lehna ji did ardas, Bhai Sati Das ji did ardas, Baba Gurbaksh Singh ji did ardas and the list goes on. You want to play God by saying pick the better of the two bad apples and let one of them dictate what is Gurmat in a Gurdwara is only going to put the Khalsa Panth in a worse position. And this will create even a bigger divide where the next generation will completely lose all values of Sikhi. When Gursikhs like Baba Buddha ji and Bhai Mani Singh ji were in charge of running Sikh institutions the Khalsa Panth stood strong no matter how much "suffering" it went through. Sant Jarnail Singh ji showed how to run Sikh institution and look at the glory of how many shaheeds the Khalsa Panth had step up to defend the truth. Look now at your hand where people like you want to play God. By playing God you have lost the youth and have lost the Sikhs that once stood along side Sant Jarnail Singh ji on the platform of truth for every human and creature.

  7. Paunta Sahib, Himachal Pardesh (November 19, 2013): As per information available with the Sikh Siyasat News (SSN) the members of a Sikh religious procession who were heading towards the site of Gurdwara Gyan Godri at Haridwar were arredted by Uttrakhand police at the Kulhal checkpost on the border of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. As per media reports the police sources claimed that around 400 Sikh devotees led by Baba Baljeet Singh Daduwal came to the Kulhal checkpost at around 1 pm as per a pre-announced programme. They were reportedly prevented by the police from entering the state. Some media sources have reported that when the police tried to stop Sikhs it led a minor scuffle between the police and the Sikhs. As per reports Vikasnagar circle officer SK Singh said that they arrested 290 Sikh devotees and took them to the Sri Guru Ram Rai Public School, Sahaspur where they were released on personal bonds. Earlier on Sunday (November 17), 47 Sikhs of All Indian Sikhs Conference (AISC) were detained in Haridwar when they were about to visit Har Ki Pauri for kirtan on Gurupurab Times of India (TOI) has reported. It is notable that Gurdwara Gyan Godri was a historic Sikh shrine at Haridwara that marked the memory of Guru Nanak Sahib Jis visit to the place and signified the rejection of superstitious rituals by Guru Sahib. The Gurdwara Sahib was destroyed during November 1984 genocidal violence against the Sikhs. It is notable that on November 28, 2012, the Uttarakhand government had arrested around 700 Sikhs when they had tried to celebrate Gurpurb at Haridwar, citing law and order situation. It may be recalled that in 2012 the Haridwar administration had banned entry of Sikhs in wake of Fateh Yatra. http://www.sikhsiyasat.net/2013/11/19/uttrakhand-police-prevent-sikhs-for-visiting-site-of-gyan-godri-sikh-jatha-led-by-baba-daduwal-arrested-at-inter-state-border/

  10. Jaspreet Singh’s novel Helium confronts memories of the 1984 pogrom against the Sikhs. http://metro.co.uk/2013/11/26/jaspreet-singhs-harrowing-novel-of-genocide-in-the-wake-of-indira-gandhis-assassination-4201439/ In November 1984, after Indira Gandhi’s assassination, politicians of India’s Congress party directed mobs to burn alive as many Sikhs as possible. Members of parliament and cabinet ministers distributed kerosene oil and white phosphorous. Witnesses talked about the use of rubber tyres to trap the target, create thick clouds of toxins and facilitate combustion. I was a teenager in Delhi. A mob passed our block, attacking Sikhs on the street. We hid in a neighbour’s house. The few hours we were there fill a huge space in my mind. I’ve not been able to articulate those few hours, the burned remains of the books and buildings I saw later and the tiny particles of ash floating in the air. For years I tried hard to forget those moments. Raj, the narrator of Helium, faces a huge predicament. His own father, a senior police officer, facilitated the violence in November 1984. The police were under direct control of the government. Under the watchful eyes of the cops, a mob directed by senior Congress party leaders burned alive Raj’s beloved professor. Later, Raj asks a question, which may be significant to younger generations in India: How do sons and daughters deal with the crimes of their fathers? I wrote my first story, Arjun, in 2000. I had flown to San Francisco for a conference but skipped most of it and finished the first draft in 14 straight hours. Arjun is told from the point of view of a Sikh boy travelling with his mother and grandfather on the day of Indira Gandhi’s assassination. My plan was to allow Arjun to grow into a novel but when I picked it up, I felt a narrative crisis. Most known models were inadequate to narrate November 1984. I had to figure out a new way to write. Helium was a resolution of a creative crisis. In 2008, after finishing my first novel, I was invited to Delhi to work with HIV-positive orphans. They wanted ghost stories. After storytelling, I took long walks through the city and it was then the ghosts of 1984 returned. As I processed those Delhi experiences, walking with the ghosts, I started writing. Helium has a hybrid form to better access the pogroms of November 1984 and the years that followed. It let me reveal traces of the horrific. To do it otherwise – as in a human rights’ report – is a paralysing affair and affects our capacity as humans to engage fully with the crime of crimes. Helium’s hybrid form allowed me to pose questions such as: ‘What happened?’ and ‘What could have happened?’ It also allowed me to create distance. Despite all this, it was not easy to write. Helium involved a lot of research and is informed by survivor and relief-worker testimonials and is based on oral histories and private archives. These are stories of complicated grief and collective trauma. Unfinished mourning. Not just memory but post-memory and the transmission of trauma. It was not easy. Several times I tried to abandon the project. Helium (Publisher:Bloomsbury) is out now by Jaspreet Singh Books

  14. Patit means who is living out of the bana(identity of sikhism).. There is nothing like good and bad to judge among them....infact these things come in the character of people.. At some point it seems like " they (patit) want to take the taste of Gurus but they don't wanna give their own taste to Gurus..." that means again "They wanna take the 100 percent of gurus but they don't wanna give their 100 percent to the gurus..." There are thousands of hindus ,muslims, Christians who believe in the teachings of the gurus and follow them but does it mean that we should give them right to judge our own people as per as sikhi and allow them to take part in our sikh administrations and managements? ??? hmm?... In the same way there will be enough sikhs who believe in the philosophy of others religion (Even we know our Gurus have told us respect all religions but always be with your own roots) so do you think that other people would like to introduce sikhs in their management committees ??? hmm? Sikhi does not say or force to follow it.. it is everybody's own life and he can live in whatever the way he wants...but when it comes to sikhi and wanna take the taste of it then everyone needs commitments towards it.and honesty without any single hypocrisy like "sikhi is done with heart not with hair"...tell me that's what our gurus have taught us??? After few years there will not be enough sardars in this world because we have been addicted of fashionable and worldly life.... and then we will be able to appoint any mona as granthi or paathi?? aje ta gal sirf commitee di ho rahi a... my point is its not with sikhi only but in every religion there are performing the same things....for example in buddhism we will see the management of those who look like budhist....in hindus we see brahimns management...in christians we see the preference of priests who look like jesus....and the same case with rest of the religions.... I want to illustrate it with some examples:---when we go to take admission in some school we are served with some guide book in which school states its principles and rules regarding uniform ,shoes, socks , color of uniforms, behavior that has to be maintained by student in the school,,how to sit or stand how to attend assembly...etc etc....but at the same time we see there are different majors (subjects) in the school like science ,math, social sciences etc etc to be taught by teachers...tell me now have these majors to do anything with the principles and rules that are mentioned in guide book of school??? Guide book is a book that tells the student how to be disciplined as long as in this school...when you left it and join some other school you have to follow principles and rules of that school...simple.. In my school times I have always been in the merit of school...got every time more than 80 percent marks .....but at the same time i had a naughty mind and inappropriate habits for an example..I used to reach school after assembly just because I never wanted to stand for so long time in the morning and I was always wearing sneakers.. my favourite shoes lol and sometimes my pant was so narrow from below and as a result they sent me back to home just from school gate.. and as a reward from the management of school I had been punished for these things many times..... after some time I realized the things when my teacher told me "getting high marks and being bright student in reading the books does not make you good student unless you don't follow the rules and regulations of this school. you are not in your home where you can do anything you want. Not only this school but no any other school will be accepting you if you don't follow their rules and principles ..... At last..we come to sikhi ,...I would say sehajdhari word was made for those who come to panth slowly .. ...not for those who will go to barber's shop everyday in the morning and after having shave on face and blade on head they stand up and after looking themselves in the mirror of the barber 's shop they say "yes I am sikh and i m so proud of it and sikhi is done with heart not with hair"........... and then they come to their home then after having bath they go to gurudwara and bow down in front of SGGS ji....... that's what I call a cheap level of hypocrisy (for whatever the reason they have )..... This world never seen sardars doing the rape of girls.... This world world never seen sardars begging on roads... This world never seen sardars teasing the girls physically ... and many more nice things are about sardars... but generally we don't even hesitate to compare the sardars with monas..just because we can see few sardars doing the bad things from the thousands of good sardars... The fault is not in sardars ...the fault lies in the sight of eyes of the people...

  15. Washington: Sikh activists in the US has launched an updated smartphone application to make it easier for Sikh passengers to report any abuse against them at American airports. The free, downloadable app called FlyRights, lets travellers instantly send their concerns to the US Transportation Security Administration and Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Sikh Coalition said. "FlyRights users have confirmed that we cannot simply trust the TSA to self-report on whether it is engaging in discrimination," said Amardeep Singh, director of Programs at the Sikh Coalition. "An independent auditor should review and publicly report on the TSA's screening practises. Only then will we know whether the TSA is remaining true to its own anti-discrimination polices. Until that happens, we call on the public to hold the TSA accountable by downloading and using FlyRights," he said yesterday. The updated "FlyRights 2.0" also allows passengers to send copies of their complaints to their members of Congress, and it features maps that show which airports have the most troubling records. The move was welcomed by US lawmakers. "Airport safety measures based on someone's race, gender or faith are not safety measures at all they alienate targeted communities and make victims out of travellers," said Congresswoman Judy Chu. "The new FlyRights mobile app being introduced today will empower travellers to fight back against profiling with new tools," she said. "A process for travellers to submit complaints can provide recourse while helping improve TSA's performance," said Congressman John Mica, former Chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and current senior member of the Committee. "Since the launch of the app, reports of racial profiling and discrimination to the TSA have increased almost 20 fold," said Wade Henderson, president and CEO of the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights. The app was first launched in April 2012 and since then some 18,000 people have downloaded it. "While the app was launched to address the pervasive profiling that happens to Sikhs, South Asians, and Muslims, it has been embraced and used by African Americans, wheelchair users, women, Hispanics, and many others," the lawmaker said. FlyRights 2.0 also contains "user notifications" that will allow the Sikh Coalition to send messages and news about airport screening issues directly to users. Sikhs in the United States have faced a wave of violence since the September 11, 2001 attacks, with assailants sometimes falsely believing they are radical Muslims. In the worst incident, a white supremacist shot dead six Sikhs after barging into their temple in Wisconsin in August 2012. http://www.sify.com/news/us-sikhs-launch-smartphone-app-to-report-abuse-at-airports-news-international-nl1d4dadbib.html

  17. http://panthicdal.com/main-headlines/avtar-singh-makkar-chief-asks-bahuguna-to-rebuild-gurdwara-at-haridwar/ Avtar Singh Makkar chief asks Bahuguna to rebuild gurdwara at HaridwarPosted by Editor on Dec 15th, 2012 // Comments off SGPC chief Avtar Singh Makkar has appealed to the Uttarakhand government to take immediate steps to rebuild Gurdwara Gyan Godri on the banks of the Ganga at Har ki Pauri in Haridwar. The shrine, associated with Guru Nanak, was demolished in 1979 along with several other structures along the banks of the Ganga when a massive centrally funded campaign for cleansing the sacred river was undertaken. Makkar made this appeal during a meeting with Uttarakhand chief minister Vijay Bahuguna at Dehradun on Monday. Makkar led an SGPC delegation comprising senior vice-president Raghujit Singh Virk, general secretary Sukhdev Singh Bhaur, executive member Rajinder Singh and two senior SGPC officials to the Uttarakhand capital. A release issued from the SGPC headquarters here stated that the meeting was held in a cordial atmosphere and the CM listened to the views of the delegation. Later, Bahuguna assured Makkar that a decision would be taken very soon on rebuilding the shrine in view of its historical importance and the fact that it reminded pilgrims coming to Haridwar of Guru Nanak’s visit to the place. The SGPC chief told the CM that while the government had rebuilt several demolished structures along the river at Haridwar, the gurdwara was yet to be constructed. The Uttarakhand government had prevented a Sikh jatha from entering the state last month. The jatha was on its way to Haridwar for participating in the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak on November 28 at the spot where Gurdwara Gyan Godri once stood. Makkar and several other Sikh groups had condemned the state government’s action. Makkar had then made it clear that the Sikh community was determined to reconstruct the historical gurdwara. He had also indicated that he would be meeting the Uttarakhand CM soon to discuss the issue.

  18. Jaspreet singh ji, Please show the sangata how it should be done. Shall we start talking about tribalism politics in local gurdwara you go to? At this rate I wouldn't trust so called gurdwara commitee members of my local gurdwara with my son day care activities let alone guru maharaj gurdwara.. Sorry khalsa title is earned by actions not empty words or rhetoric not automatically given to any Joe blow who appear to be sikh.

  19. jaspreet, your post smacks of idealism, not realism. and stop twisting what i am saying, if you think that being amritdhari automatically makes you better to handle the job of running a gurdwara, why are so mnay gurdwaras in the UK, which are run by amritdharis performing so badly. why is it that the gurdwaras run by people elected on the basis that they are amritdhari and so they must know what they are doing, making a mess of the gurdwara s and messing up the next generation. the truth is that it is best to have amritdharis who are actually good at management running gurdwaras. failing that then its best to get kesadharis who know how to. i have never said a mona is better equipped, just that being amritdhari is not the only requirement for gurdwara management. stop making out words in my name, you are beginning to remind me of some of the people who i have worked with in the past. yes amritdhari ones amongst them.

  20. Your experience does not speak for all of the Khalsa Panth. I have seen personally the Sikh community grow when Amritdhari/Sehajdhari Sikhs take control of a Gurdwara or be another institution like a school. Do you know why they are successful. Not because how smart they are or how well they are able to make connections with stakeholders in the community. But because they bow at the feet of Guru ji and let Guru ji run the show by following instructions. I can name you other examples from history by starting from the Second Guru of the Sikhs. This plan is ALWAYS successful. No extra effort is needed to implement such plans. I believe along with other Amritdhari Singhs and Kaurs when my Guru says he will stand shoulder to shoulder with me when I follow his hukams that he will do it. I do not second guess or doubt Guru ji at all. I can give you numerous examples of this taking place. The Guru doesn't need some mona or Amritdhari that has a lot of money and political push to do anything, while both disobey Guru Sahib. The Guru is self-sufficient, if you already don't know read Mool Mantar. In there we are told Guru Sahib is self-sufficient. Guru Sahib showed his ability through many Sikhs in the past and the more recent past and is currently showing it through many Sikhs. What you are trying to do is pigeon hole Guru Sahib and then try to run the show on your own by saying a mona is better than a certain amritdhari because of some condition you put on the amritdhari. Obviously you have not done deep contemplation of Gurbani to know..............Sikhs do ardas and don't issue commands to Guru Sahib.

  21. This is a sensible decision from the Akal Takht. It sets a basic minimum of what a Gurudwara administrator should be. You only hope their deeds and actions mirror their outward appearance. I hope this doesnt deter non Amritdahris to not get involved in the running of the Gurudwara, sewa comes in many forms and ultimately we all aspire to one day become an amritdahri sikh.
    1 point
  22. This is a great step by the Akal Takht. It is interesting that as soon as a decision is made, people will start to criticising it. There is nothing in the Hukumnama which stop monas from taking part in sewa or any functioning of the Gurdwara apart from taking a leadership role in the committee. Patit does mean someone who has broken their rehat but sabut soorat means that the committee members should at least be Keshdharis.

  26. Arya samaj was on the scene much before 1920s/1930s. While there may be a few conversion of jats here and there, Jats are staunch Hindus. Hindu Jats are mostly concentrated in rajasthan where they may be more in numbers than rajputs followed by Haryana and Western UP.Chaudhari Charan singh, their leader from western UP was a rabid anti sikh figure who quite a few times passed anti sikh remarks openly.

  27. Guru Granth Sahib Ji to be translated into 13 languages Tribune News Service Ludhiana, June 18 The Guru Granth Sahib Seva Mission has taken it upon itself to translate Guru Granth Sahib into 13 prominent Indian languages so that people across the country can follow the path shown by the Gurus. The translation and publication of the granth is being undertaken so that the translated versions are ready for publication and distribution on the eve of the of 300 years of installation of the holy book as the Guru of the Sikhs in 2008. Mr Gurinderpal Singh Dhanaula, chief sevadar of the mission, said many people from other parts of the country had urged them to undertake this exercise as the reach of the granth was universal and they were facing problems in reading the holy book. He said they were encouraged when the granth was successfully translated into Urdu by Baba Ravinderpal Singh of Talwandi Sabo. They then decided that they would approach prominent regional scholars to get the granth translated into 13 prominent languages. He said the granth would be initially translated into Hindi, Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Marathi, Kannada, Oriya, Tamil, Telugu, Sindhi, Malayalam and Sanskrit. The next phase would be to get it translated into major foreign languages, he added. Work on the Oriya and Tamil versions was underway and was being done by Dr N.C. Panda of the Sambhalpur University and Kannan R. of the Madurai University, respectively. Mr Dhanaula said initially they would get 5000 copies each of the granth printed in Urdu and Hindi while 1,000 copies each would be available in rest of the regional languages. Besides, they would also get 5 lakh copies of Japji Sahib published in Urdu and Hindi while 1 lakh each would be available for the people in other regional languages. Commenting on the financial implications of such a massive project, he said while the SGPC has not even bothered to reply to their letters, the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee chief Paramjit Singh Sarna has assured all possible help while offers were pouring in from various religious and social organisations across the country and abroad. Similarly, Capt Amarinder Singh had also promised help for the project and the Central Government too has assured that they would chip in financially and otherwise, he added. He said others who are helping them include former Gurdwara Kesgarh Sahib Jathedar Bhai Manjit Singh, Dr Kharak Singh, Dr Brijpal Singh, Dr Dharam Singh, Dr Kehar Singh, Prof Jasbir Singh, Founder Principal, Sahibzada Jujhar Singh Gurmat Missionary College, Chaunta, and others. He also added that they had written to various universities across the country to recommend names of scholars who could undertake the task. 28. You've got me confused here :stupidme: Do you mean that some of us maybe more gurmat (say 90%) compared to others (say 80%) ? OR Do you mean that ONE person's gurmat is NOT another persons, or One's gurmat is another's manmat ?

  29. Daduwal has no sikhi interest left in him as he is in bed with radhaswami sect. He was again in their gurinder's dera few days ago. He should be stripped off from representing Sikhs in India. As sant ji said in one of his speeches, " do not raise your hand and join our movement if you are the follower of Radha swami and other pakhandi babay".

  31. Please treat this teeka with respect and do show gratitude towards it. Its very valuable gem should not be taken for granted. It's been said - bhramgyani baba thakur singh ji used to give this teeka along with panj granthi steek to only those who would pass santhiaya/gurbani ucharan and basic sikhi spiritual exam.
