  1. 'I will sell them,' Boko Haram leader says of kidnapped Nigerian girls By Aminu Abubakar and Josh Levs, CNN updated 9:48 AM EDT, Mon May 5, 2014 (CNN) -- Fears for the fate of more than 200 Nigerian girls turned even more nightmarish Monday when the leader of the Islamist group that kidnapped them announced plans to sell them. "I abducted your girls. I will sell them in the market, by Allah," a man claiming to be Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau said in a video first obtained by Agence France-Presse. "There is a market for selling humans. Allah says I should sell. He commands me to sell. I will sell women. I sell women," he continued, according to a CNN translation from the local Hausa language. Boko Haram means "Western education is sin." In his nearly hourlong, rambling video, Shekau repeatedly called for Western education to end. "Girls, you should go and get married," he said. The outrageous threat means the girls' parents worst fears could be realized. Parents have been avoiding speaking to the media for fear their daughters may be singled out for reprisals. "Wherever these girls are, we'll get them out," Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan vowed Sunday. But weeks after the girls were kidnapped April 14, Africa's largest country seems to be no closer to finding them, triggering complaints of ineptitude -- some of which is expressed on Twitter with the globally trending hashtag #BringBackOurGirls. On Sunday, about 100 demonstrators gathered outside the Nigerian High Commission in London, chanting, "Bring them back!" and "Not for sale!" Crowds from Los Angeles to London rallied on Saturday as well. "Access to education is a basic right & an unconscionable reason to target innocent girls," former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton wrote Sunday on Twitter. "We must stand up to terrorism. #BringBackOurGirls." Families had sent their girls to the rural school in Chibok to try to get them a desperately needed education. Though Nigeria has Africa's largest economy, poverty remains widespread: Nearly 62% of the country's nearly 170 million people live in extreme poverty, according to the CIA World Factbook. According to accounts, armed members of Boko Haram overwhelmed security guards at school last month, pulled the girls out of bed and forced them into trucks. The convoy of trucks then disappeared into the dense forest bordering Cameroon. On Friday, Nigerian authorities updated the number of girls kidnapped to 276. At least 53 of the girls escaped, leaving 223 in the hands of their captors, police said. Authorities said the number of missing girls could grow as police fill in spotty school enrollment records. Watch video here: http://www.cnn.com/2014/05/05/world/africa/nigeria-abducted-girls/index.html?hpt=hp_t1 Back in the days it would take a couple of Singhs to free thousands of such girls. Sadly today we do not have the ucha-sucha jeevan of all those Singh soorme.

  2. Very noble, but kind of naive. Maybe I sound selfish but I do not wish for our brothers and sisters to be cannon fodder for other people's bidding. We are very good at fighting other people's battles and not our own. Bhul Chuk Maf if I have offended anyone.

  3. As always Neo you go off on a tangent. I told you that Mohammed did exactly what Boko Haram are doing and you bring in NANG POOHLA! Was nang Poohla following the example of any of the Gurus? No, so your analogy is false and as someone who has been active on the forums for over a decade I would have thought that you would not have made such a schoolboy error. Here's a more simple way for you to understand. 1, Boko Haram kidnap schoolgirls and threaten to sell them off 2. Mohammed brought and sold slaves when he was around 3. Islam teaches that Mohammed is the perfect man and should be emulated by all Muslims 4. What Boko Haram is doing is sanctioned by Islam.

  5. Fateh, Is there any information about rally next month in London? Are there any special things planned to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the events? Which gurdwaras are coaches booked to leave from? Having attended in past years I do feel there needs to be a change in the direction of the programme. Thanks

  8. Crisis is a bad choice of word for such situations. Most of the time people decide to build a Gurdwara without proper financial or business planning in place, what results is they run out of funds not surprisngly due to poor planning.,,then they claim it's a "crisis" and appeal to the national sangat for money to help them complete the project.. Theres a new crisis every other month these days..all entirely avoidable if the proper planning and finances were established in the first place..

  11. Two men have been found guilty of murdering a grandmother who was left to die in a shop basement. Mohammed Islam, 29, from Gillingham, and Murshed Miah, 38, from Maidstone, attacked Harjit Chaggar at the store in Chatham, Kent, last September. They were also found guilty of preventing Mrs Chaggar's lawful burial, along with Abdul Hannan, 44, from Maidstone, and Rasad Miah, of Chatham, Hannan was found not guilty of murder. The men denied all of the charges. Mrs Chaggar's body was only found 12 days after she went missing because of the smell, Canterbury Crown Court heard. 'Motive unclear' Islam worked as a butcher at the store in Luton Road at the time Mrs Chaggar disappeared on 2 September. Jurors heard Mrs Chaggar's badly decomposed body was concealed in a bin bag under the floor boards and her injuries were consistent with being thrown into the basement while still alive. Nigel Pilkington, from the Crown Prosecution Service, said the motive for the murder was unclear. He said some of Mrs Chaggar's belongings were missing and so the most probable motive was robbery. Abdur Rohim, who used to cook at the food store, gave evidence from Bangladesh by video link. Murshed Miah, Abdul Hannan and Mohammed Liakat Islam all denied murder He told the court he never met Mrs Chaggar, but said in the days leading up to the discovery of the body, there had been "a horrible smell" in the shop. Mr Rohim said staff lit incense sticks to get rid of it. 'Callous' Sani Globe was described in court as a grocery shop and a butchers which supplied local restaurants. Jurors heard Hannan and his brother Murshed Miah ran the business while Rasad Miah worked in the shop along with Mr Islam. CCTV captured Mrs Chaggar walking through Chatham Judge Adele Williams praised the dignity of Mrs Chaggar's family and the police investigation. However, shouting from the gallery, Hannan's wife said: "You've not been just. My husband is innocent." Det Supt Rob Vinson, from Kent Police, said the men's silence meant he was unable to tell Mrs Chaggar's family exactly how and why she was attacked and left to die. Nigel Pilkington, from the Crown Prosecution Service, said: "The defendants all knew... how she came to be killed and why. "The denials of her murder and their collective attempts to hide the truth were particularly callous and aggravated further by the fact that they left her to die." Her son Kuldish Chaggar said: "We pray that she is now at peace and can give us the strength to carry on without her no matter what obstacles are placed in our way, for none can be bigger than losing her. "We remember the good times, the smiles and laughter of a loved and treasured mother and grandmother who had so many hopes and plans for the future." The men are due to be sentenced on 20 May. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-kent-27326538

  13. There is no doubt that Sikhs back in days were constantly fighting with Mughals and use of bhang was purely for medicinal use only. Just like in today's world, doctor gives steroid medicine to those who suffer great pain of arthritics. However, nihangs made culture and trend now and there is no war but a vehlapan in most dals. So, yes this should be taken out of sikhi culture now.

  14. I recently went to Birmingham for the Vaishaki parade and thoroughly enjoyed the event especially in Handsworth park where there were lots of stalls with various activities. I have never been to Brum before, and visted a few temples for the first time as I was following the procession. One thing I noticed was. that in one of the Sikh temples there were ornaments and pictures of Lions and also a big rug with a lions head on it. I have never seen this before in any Sikh temples and was wondering what this was for?? I thought that we as Sikhs are not really suppose to have pictures or ornaments of animals in the central stage of temple apart from pictures of our Gurus.

  16. They should delete Boko and just call themselves Haram - because thats what they are. Kidnapping children because they study education and then selling them to pirates for a life of slavery is not logic nevermind religious decree. What amazes me most is when they say Allah told me to do this, or i have Allahs instruction. Shame on all Governments and its agencies for not wiping these scum bags out soon enough

  17. As others have said, no one is forcing anyone to take langar or eat everything that is available. I stick with daal, roti and dahi. Occasionally I might permit myself to have mattar paneer or cholay. Receive what you wish. Be grateful to God for langar prashad, and remember Him whilst you eat. People don't provide all these foods for the sake of it. I had a birthday coming up and wanted samosas. I automatically thought "I know Guru Ji would enjoy samosas" and hence we took some to the gurdwara to give out in the langar. It was my way of sharing something I liked with God and that's how I saw it.

  18. You're at a young age so I don't know how much experience you have. I've been to night clubs and parties and such. Other than chatting with friends, I found the whole boring. Actually, not boring but kind of surreal. I would become aware of the entire surroundings and yet be distant from them, like I was outside and looking in through a window. It was interesting to watch and see people act and interact, drinking and dancing, almost as though to convince themselves they were having a good time. Go if you can't get out of it but try to remain detached from it and remember paramatma throughout.

You meditate on the Lord, and chant the Lord's Name, O my merchant friend. You contemplate the Name of the Lord, Har, Har. Chanting the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, and meditating on it within the fire of the womb, your life is sustained by dwelling on the Naam. You are born and you come out, and your mother and father are delighted to see your face. Remember the One, O mortal, to whom the child belongs. As Gurmukh, reflect upon Him within your heart. Says Nanak, O mortal, in the first watch of the night, dwell upon the Lord, who shall shower you with His Grace. ||1|| In the second watch of the night, O my merchant friend, the mind is attached to the love of duality. Mother and father hug you close in their embrace, claiming, ""He is mine, he is mine""; so is the child brought up, O my merchant friend. Your mother and father constantly hug you close in their embrace; in their minds, they believe that you will provide for them and support them. The fool does not know the One who gives; instead, he clings to the gift. Rare is the Gurmukh who reflects upon, meditates upon, and within his mind, is lovingly attached to the Lord. Says Nanak, in the second watch of the night, O mortal, death never devours you. ||2|| In the third watch of the night, O my merchant friend, your mind is entangled in worldly and household affairs. You think of wealth, and gather wealth, O my merchant friend, but you do not contemplate the Lord or the Lord's Name. You never dwell upon the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, who will be your only Helper and Support in the end. This wealth, property and Maya are false. In the end, you must leave these, and depart in sorrow. Those whom the Lord, in His Mercy, unites with the Guru, reflect upon the Name of the Lord, Har, Har. Says Nanak, in the third watch of the night, O mortal, they go, and are united with the Lord. ||3|| In the fourth watch of the night, O my merchant friend, the Lord announces the time of departure. Serve the Perfect True Guru, O my merchant friend; your entire life-night is passing away. Serve the Lord each and every instant-do not delay! You shall become eternal throughout the ages. Enjoy ecstasy forever with the Lord, and do away with the pains of birth and death. Know that there is no difference between the Guru, the True Guru, and your Lord and Master. Meeting with Him, take pleasure in the Lord's devotional service. Says Nanak, O mortal, in the fourth watch of the night, the life-night of the devotee is fruitful. ||4||1||3|| May we all go back to our innocent child hood moment in the womb and jaap naam with unbroken current (naam liv). Vahiguroo, very beautiful video and beautiful shabad put things in perspective.

  20. Sangat Jee Please watch and share the latest video of RajoanaTV below; a fiery exploration into how Parkash Badal and his Akali Dal have built a Kingdom upon the blood and tears of thousands of Panjabi's. Watch to see how and why an immoral, criminal, anti-Sikh rabble managed to rule Panjab as a 'Panthic Government' for a 5th term spanning over 40 years. Akalis, once revered as the troops of Guru Gobind Singh Ji, defenders of faith and nation in times are now a brigade of treacherous, drunken, crooked deviants who violate the basic tenets of Sikhi on a daily basis. Despite this, Badal reigns supreme and will he be elected again?!

  21. If you already do with your surti, and have validation, thats very good progress..you don't need to go back to vachak and upas jaap based on what information you are providing (as you may have completed this in various previous births - all of us are in this overall bhagti for many many births), all are stages, all are accepted by Guru maharaj as long as its done with honesty, sincerity and love. The key here is when you do jaap be it vachak upas or manas- your surti should be one with gurbani and let gurbani draw you in completely, take control fully and CONSUME YOUR SURTI fully (instead of mind trying all sorts of things), you will be filled with immense love-nira pyaar and bairaag which is hard to explain here. Most of times, our skeptical/egoic mind gets in a way between our surti and shabad of gurbani- Shabad Guru Surat Dhun Chela. This is from gyani thakur singh ji katha of japji sahib:

  22. Vaheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Vaheguru Ji KI Fateh Hai Ji Vaheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Vaheguru Ji KI Fateh Hai Ji Bhang Aka Cannabis is used by Nihang SInghs as it is the Puratan (old) Maryada. Nihang Singhs arn't the only users, Takht Sachkhand Sri Hazoor Sahib Hazuri Sevadaar make Shaheedi Degh for the sangat 3 times a day everyday, as it is what occured at the times of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji Shahanshah. Yes, only 5 Cannabis leafs are used, and there are no effects of the 'high' as scientists have prooved that Cannabis drank does not make the user 'High'. As Baba Nihal SIngh said above (Youtube link) that you can give the Degha (Shaheedi Degh) to a child, pregnant Bibi, elder etc. Bhang is also used by the Great Khalsa Fauj to keep their mind tuned in with the One, and to be a Warrior. It isn't mandatory but is made to uphold Pracheen (old) Nihang Singh/Singhni traditions. According to the Puratan Budha Dal Maryada of the Akhand Path of Adi - Dasam Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji on the Bhog day (last day of the Sri Akhand Path) The Jhatka (quick kill, chop etc) of Coconuts, Of a Bakra (goat) and the preperation of Sukhnidan (Treasure of Peace) is made as it all infuses Bir Ras. Shaheedi Degh also isn't just Bhang, it is a sort of Ayurvedic, as the ingreedients consist of almonds, cardamon pods (Lecheeya), black pepper, sugar etc. Vaheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Vaheguru Ji KI Fateh Hai Ji

  24. To do justice to the teachings of our Guru Sahibans, some gems in the lines below are been brought from the Bani at the seva of the Sangat. Justice in the sense, that it is only Gurmat, without the mixture of any "maanmat". And in these lines we can see, that to attain salvation, to get freed from the cycle of births and deaths, and not to have to face Dharam Rai, thus union with Akal Purukh, only one word is mentioned, only one practice is required, nothing else counts....no karmas, no rites, no rituals, no pilgrimages....nothing else is as important as Nam bhakti. Why? Because if our intention is to get connected with Him, and not to get entangled with worldly affairs, like politics, mazab, dharam, caste, creed, idol worship.....according to our Guru Sahibans, only Nam is the requirement, only Nam is essential.....if we do that, we have done everything, if not, then we have lost our soul in the Mahabhavsagar. And for that such a big loss, the fault is totally ours. We have the best school: Gurmat. The best teachers: Guru Sahibans. And then too if we fail to follow their teachings, not only that but adulterate it, manipulate it, with so many other things...then who is responsible? Is it Wahiguru? No never ever. Only we moorakhs. They tell us to do only one thing, but we prefer to do many many more, because that is how the picture has been shown to us, and it shall continue going, unless each one of us, takes each word from the Bani as Sat Bachan, and follow it literally. So let us pay attention with care and love to the words of our Guru Sahibans, in this case, below are the words of fourth Patshahee, Sree Guru Ram Das Maharaj, in Raag Maaroo. Jin har har naam na chayti-o say bhaagheen mar jaa-ay. Those who do not remember the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, are most unfortunate, and are slaughtered. o-ay fir fir jon bhavaa-ee-ah mar jameh aavai jaa-ay. They wander in reincarnation, again and again; they die, and are re-born, and continue coming and going. o-ay jam dar baDhay maaree-ah har dargeh milai sajaa-ay. Bound and gagged at Death's Door, they are cruelly beaten, and punished in the Court of the Lord. Waheguru Jee.
