  1. Agreed. You simply cannot have a Gurdwara named for a specific caste, tribe, race, etc. Guru Sahib never made such caste-based gurdwaras, so on what basis are we doing so? Gurdwara NRI Sahib, Gurdwara White Sikh Sahib, Gurdwara Punjabi Sikh Sahib, Gurdwara African Sikh Sahib? I believe there was some guidance on this issue from Akal Takhat (if not a hukumnama, then just sandesh). It was something on the order of, 1) no more gurdwaras are to be constructed without permission from Akal Takhat--demonstration of need is required, don't open up multiple unnecessary gurdwaras in a village or neighborhood. 2) No caste-based gurdwaras. 3) No gurdwaras named after a personage without reason (i.e., it's OK to have, say a Gurdwara Baba Deep Singh or Gurdwara Jassa Singh Ramgarh in the birthplace or other places associated with them, but not for the sake of hint-hint, wink-wink caste-based gurdwara. I hate the way some gurdwaras want to piggy-back off the lives of exalted personalities without there being any real connection there. Gurdwara Dasmesh Darbar does not mean that gurdwara has some special ability to channel the ideals of the 10th Guru Sahib. I realize that some gurdwaras may have committee members all of a single caste, perhaps because the founders were a guy, and his brother-in-laws, and their brother-in-laws, which would all be of a single caste/group. One hopes that as time passes, the caste-based nature of the gurdwara will decline. But once you put the caste/group name in the name of the gurdwara itself, you're fixing the caste-based nature of the place in stone. It's sort of like monas and gurdwara committees: It's true that at one time, all or most committees were all mona, simply because there weren't any kesadharis to do committee duty. As time went on, monas were replaced gradually with kesadharis. But that gradual change could not have happened if the very name of the gurdwara had been Gurdwara Monian. What we need to have is fewer gurdwaras within small geographical areas and all the Sikhs of that area coming together into a single gurdwara. They ought to simply be named after the locality in which they are based. Gurdwara Glasgow Sahib. Gurdwara Douglaston Sahib. Gurdwara Sector 31 Sahib, Chandigarh. One problem, though, is that the incumbent jathedars have ruined the prestige of the Akal Takhat, so people are less willing to listen to it anymore.

  3. Hi, I am no expert, but I believe things like diet / exercise and Gurbani can assist with negativity / stress / depression. As The Gurus advised eat little (meaning eat right), to eat 'good' food such as Hazel nuts, Almonds in the morning with fruit such as berries/banana/apples. Changing diet may help immensely, in the modern world which promotes very sugary/chemical based food, unhealthy eating and living can increase negativity in the mind which can influence more depressive state of mind. To be fit (in mind and body) and read/hear Gurbani - Shabads (spiritually) can lead to a Chardi Kalaa way of life : )

  5. MahakaalAkali • 4d "Everything happens for a reason." This isn't necessarily a statement of duality. All of Sikhism is derived from logic + reason. When something happens beyond logic and our ability to reason, we just say, "everything happens for a reason", meaning, it happened for reasons beyond our ability to reason (but we are fine with that, as it is just hukam). That doesn't necessarily mean the person is stuck in duality; that all depends on how the person copes with it. If he just blows it off and goes on with life, then that's fine. If he gets mad or depressed, then he's definitely stuck in duality. As Sikhs, we should always be trying to reason what's happening around us; that's the only way to know when another is acting completely unreasonably. If we stop doing that and just blindly accept adharmic actions from another, then how do we know when to retaliate? WJKK, WJKF.

  6. To fix Punjab means that the people of Punjab have to be empowered to improve Punjab. However, how much agency do the people of Punjab have to make these improvements. The centre in Delhi does not want Punjab to make improvements because Punjab at the moment is a Sikh majority state. Punjab and Sikhs to the rest of the India are synonymous. The elephant in the room is Sikhs.

  10. No not at all. That is when I realised. Sikhi ultimately is taking the Spiritual and the Temporal. The two go hand in hand. Temporal elements have a political elememt to it and Sikhs need political power. The best way to exercise that is to have your own nation. There is no way to get around politics which ever way we look at it. If you don't get that, then you are blind. Some of us don't get that the easy way. Some of us need a swift kick in the b***s to get that.

  11. Waheguru Just wanted to share some thoughts on the new channel KTV. Would anyone know if it is a deliberate policy of KTV to have presenters and guests with heads uncovered, and Sikh presenters not wearing karas? I also would like to know about Khalsa TV rationale of promoting folk music and non-Dharmik musical tours which contravene Sikhi values. Given that no other Sikh based channel does this (I think )? The controversial Gurdas Mann song on Bhagat Singh got heavily promoted during the early days of KTV and more recently his upcoming UK tour is being very actively promoted on KTV. Seems a contradiction of Sikh values not just because of the lyrics he sings, but the thousands of people who sway to his musical promotion of liquor and caste. Even more concerning is his belief in a dera that inculcates intoxication of drugs to get 'masti' and the fact that this dera has grown significantly due to Gurdas Manns patronage. i would paradoxically have expected KTV, Sikh Channel or all the channels to instead hold Gurdas Mann and other singers to account and campaign to get people to boycott his tour so it becomes such a flop he doesn't come back until he turns his back on said dera and changes terminology of his sexist, castist, anti-Sikhi songs. This sought of Punjabi type of programming, first subtly introduced by Akaal Channel seems to be happening more and more on KTV and is likely to be picked up by other channels with KTV actually having shows which exclusively play folk music now. Given these policies on programming perhaps a name such as Punjabi TV would be more suited to the KTV channel if it isn't going to just promote Sikh values but also Punjab culture? With a prominent Sikh organisation, Sikh Federation and also Sikh Network either funding or promoting and/ or being behind KTV, I was hoping they would act on these issues rather than it be left to individuals to express concerns with the channel. It would be a shame if other channels used these examples as an excuse to lower the promotion of Sikh values, rather than KTV setting new benchmarks. For example when Sikh Channel first appeared presenters and guests always had heads covered; however when other channels didn't adhere to this, Sikh Channel also dropped this value from their programming values instead of sticking to it and by adhering to it, applying pressure on the newer channels to conform. Just wanted to share some concerns as a concerned Sikh on this sudden demise of Sikh values across the breadth of Sikh TV channels. I don't want this to be a hater discussion but a proper discussion on retaining and promoting Sikh values in our media. Guru Fateh sangat Ji

  15. There are two narratives around the issue of meat in Sikhism: one is that meat is not allowed, period. This is what is preached to the Sangat by, for lack of a better term, Sants and other groups who accept the practice of Naam Simran. The other is that jhatka meat prepared by those in Nihang-Khalsa-shasterdhari maryada is allowed. But such a maryada was not in place before, at the earliest, the 6th Guru Sahib. As for the practical effects of this sakhi on you, those around you, or your local Gurdwara, I wouldn't worry about it, since either if you're living abroad or in our homeland, 99% of Sikhs are not following Nihang Khalsa shasterdhari maryada.

  21. Sadly thats not possible and I would hate for them all to leave or religiously cleansed from their own homeland. It just makes the case stronger for why Khalistan was vital for our survival in 1940s and is even more vital for our survival in the future. Those Sikhs who say we don't need Khalistan because India treats Sikh well now and gives them their full democratic and human rights are living in cloud coo coo land. Even if Sikhs were given refugee or asylum status in different countries....home will always be home. Afghan born Sikhs who live aboard long to return to their homeland but only once its peaceful and secure same with pakistani Sikhs who reside in india now and same with Indian born Sikhs who now reside in europe living and working like slaves. We just need to look at the example of Israel how they pursue their enemies through military and economic might when zionist jews and israeli interests are harmed. If Khalistan was established there would be military and diplomatic cloat to sort these kinda problems out our people face in hostile muslim inhabited nations. Grooming, kidnapping non-muslim girls to convert and impregnate is a military tactic to undermine the non-muslims and their population basically its genocide by the backdoor its warfare in any other words. Something we should recognise.

  23. This thread is a prime example of why i believe Sikhs are, broadly, decent people at heart. For a base group of people this thread would've signalled a green light to express some pretty offensive opinions on the founder of Islam - something which I've observed Muslims partake in when it comes to a casual discussion of our Guru Sahibs - but nobody to my knowledge has relished the opportunity to lay into their big guy. Yes, we question their beliefs and certain aspects of their writings, but not in a way that you'll see in the comments section of a YouTube anti-islam video or on various discussion sites.

This is when they are most likely to resort to suicidal thoughts. Time heals depression the best. Everyone can get depressed at any time of their lives. Prevention is the best cure. Always aim to lead a balanced life and take time to eat and relax. Learn to recognise the early signs and do something about it like change of routine before it gets worse. Better still - read a good book or scan the internet to understand what depression really is.

  32. Awesome post I agree. Guru Nanak Dev Ji taught, there is no Hindu and no Muslim for a reason, Truth cannot be confined to a religion a caste or a creed. The Gurus taught the pure uncorrupted Truth of the ages, as Satguru Gobind Ji explained, it was the Truth other teachers were sent to teach, but they became corrupted over time. Finally He sent the Gurus to teach the same Truth but in more depth as they were highly and likely the highest evolved souls to that date. If people in Punjab want a seperate state, they should be allowed to have it, after all of the atrocities of the past, it may give people more of a piece of mind and security. People in Punjab and all over the world have indeed been wronged beyond belief by the Hindu government and I doubt there will ever be trust for a mass murdering government like the one in power again nor should there be. But the govt will no doubt still be corrupt as many Sikh leaders are today. The blessing of the Gurus being leaders were that they were spiritually sound, hence no amount of corruption, bribery, or ego of power could get to them. They were leaders beyond maya and accepted themselves to be Nothing and gave all Glory to God himself, seating God Himself on the throne, they were accepting that they were empty vessels of His. None of this mayadhari Ego of power and position bullsh*t. Not to to mention the fact the Illuminati now monopolises the world as it does the majority of the worlds wealth, as they themselves stated with their own mouths, whoever owns the majority of the worlds wealth, runs the world governments. Truth is of course Universal, Baba Nanak Ji showed us that when he travelled to a different planet and bought back parshaad, only a fool could think it belongs solely to brown people in a section of the world, Guru Ji travelled wide and far in acceptance of this teaching to the masses. Gurdwarras exist wide and far and this again is testament to this.

  33. This so called khalistan is deeply offensive and derogatory to me and my Guru- if only you would begin to understand that the whole world, the whole universe and beyond is home to the Sikh and that anyone can be a Sikh. The purpose of Sikhs is to usher in a new age of sat yug. This is a global situation. Most if not all of you are residents of Western countries. Conduct your duties and responsibilities as a Sikh where you live. Sikhs are to be the example of the absolute truth in society. The Guru rejects boundaries and political maps. There is no religion called Sikhism- it is the universal truth for one and all and the so called sikhs are failing in this regard- merely wanting to copy the abrahamic religions, each of whom have their own holy cities and nations. Sikhs are beyond religion. They are beyond nations. They are meant to be the embodiment of the Guru, sacrificing their lives to make this world a better place. Yet the trending topics on this forum right now are "Gurdwara fight", "Khalistan referendum" and "Intercaste marriage". As a non Punjabi, these topics have nothing to do with me. As a Sikh and world citizen, my duty is only to the Guru. The most pressing issues in the world today are environmental destruction and global warming, capitalism and consumerism and the political-religious warmongering. Whilst the world is headed to certain destruction, the Guru looks to the Khalsa who he gave the responsibility to protect and save the world. Yet where is this Khalsa? Busy carrying the cultural baggage from their great-grandfather's pind? People are being blown up with grenades by paramilitary in North Dakota. Standing rock will be remembered by future generations as a historic ocassion when those who stood for the right values in society, fought and gave their all for a better world. God will always remember that the so called Sikhs of the 21st century, busy banging on about some hypothetical religious Vatican City/Mecca style religious nation state where they can practice their tainted and culturally-loaded religion and brandish big egos and weaponary and raise slogans against people they hate. What happens to these big egos and kirpans when it's time to face up to the fact that unless the world acts RIGHT NOW, global fresh water supplies will run out by 2040, war extreme suffering will prevail (UN report). Those very same people who talk big become mice and hide in the crevices. Are they sikhs? Now before you get upset and rant against this message, just think about what the Guru expects of you. A true Sikh is one who, upon hearing the words of ethics or of personal failure, will drop before the Guru and beg for guidance and strength. Be that Sikh. Dhan Guru Granth Sahib ji, the one and only Guru, the Shabad Guru is here for one and all to guide. Seek the Guru. Leave behind your great-grandtather's cultural baggage. Reject religion. Accept only God. Give your head to the Guru and mean it. Save the world. Do it now. Waheguru ji ka khalsa waheguru ji ki fateh
