  1. There's bad women like there are bad men. Ideally, these people of both sexes should be shunned and shamed into reforming themselves. Instead, we tend to look past these deficiencies and unknowingly and perversely encourage this rotten behaviour by excusing it as just one of those things that can't be avoided. I'd add that if a man feels like he's on the verge of thrashing his woman due to her unreasonable behaviour, he should end the relationship and walk away. Most people don't change their habits particularly the older they get. Some would argue with some justification that the problem in the modern world is the marriage transaction which is heavily weighted in the favour of women, in as much as the end of a marriage could spell financial doom for the man regardless of who's actually culpable for things going wrong. That's probably one contributor to men deciding to stick it out (at the risk of avoiding ruination) while releasing their frustrations on their woman. It's wrong but obviously messed up.

  2. Doesn't the soul have no gender? In Gurbani, one is referred as the soul-bride. I would say that we are both equally susceptible to the 5 thieves and we shouldn't make such huge generalizations.

  3. Not defensive at all, just highlighting the difference Depends on what metric you are looking at. If you are looking with American eyes in terms of size of cars and house then yes. Then you are not that different to other people who like to see whether the grass is greener I mentioned LA and San Francisco because it is your local state. I have been to many other parts of the US and see the regional differences. My last job I worked extensively with Mid-Westerners (Chicago/Wisconsin and other Great Lakes people), very different to West Coasters and East Coast people. The average US family is not better off than the UK family. Don't get fooled by the smaller houses and smaller cars. You are not saying anything new to me. It is the same way American thing England is just London. Yes of course, if you had read my previous post then I had already answered that. What metrics of standard of living, other than size of house or size of car, there is nothing US really has an advantage over any other western country. If I sold my house and moved to the US, I could easily afford a million dollar house. In fact a lot of people in the UK, if they moved to US and sold their homes, they could easily get a house that is 4000-5000 square foot, multiple bedrooms, multiple baths. (This is what you Americans value) I could sell up and move to Thailand and do the same. If you are looking at salaries, then you need to look at cost of living and what you are left with after your expenses. We don't have to worry about spending quarter of a million dollars for our kid's college fees and then having to do an MBA after that just to secure a good job. And what about your medical expenses, most Americans live paycheck to paycheck. If you are working 90 hours a week, and earning $150,000 a year , with only like 10 days of vacation (which can you can fired if you take your vacation or even go sick) but you live with your leased car and an overpriced McMansion and compare that with someone earning £30,000 a year with a 4 bedroom house almost paid for and a couple of houses on rent, 25 days of annual leave, a NHS with only having to pay £10 on your medical prescriptions, I think people can figure out where they would be better off. Soft power as in 'cultural influence' it seems to have. The UK seems to attract a lot of the EU countries where standards of living are as high as the UK. We also get a lot of professionals for many parts of the world, may be not The US is already 3rd world in some parts. If you live a great life in the US then fine, but don't think for a minute that the US is the be all and end all, much of the world has caught up. They also have other metrics that far surpass the US as well.

And all Love included, and jokes aside, Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaja did write Sri Charitropakhyan for a reason. I should really read that...having had first hand experience and sort of...imagining what's in there... I've been working up the resolve. I apologize if I offended anyone. I was feeling salty.

  13. Pooranshami is a full moon which happens every month and is celebrated as Guru Nanak Dev Ji's birthday. According to Sant Nand Singh Ji if we can we should stay up at night and do Path if you stay up for as long as you can you get the merit(Is it the right word) as one amrit vela. If you stay uo the entire night and day you get the merit of a year worth of amrit vela. Sant Nand Singh Ji also said that Guru Nanak Dev Ji was born at 12:51 am. So if you are staying up at least stay up untill 12:51. If you are worried you will miss amrit vela you don't have to stay up at night. Just do simrin while sleeping.

  29. Our houses are small because our country is small and land is at a premium. Yet most UK Sikh houses are extended to have at least 4 bedrooms and at least 2 bath rooms . They might be only 1500 sq foot in size but that is more than ample for the most of us. The benefit for living in a smaller country where everything is compact is that you can walk a lot more than having to take a car everywhere. I can walk to my gurdwara, matha tek and walk back home.

  32. Why are you getting so defensive? I like the UK and think it's perhaps a better place for Sikhs to live than the US. But having traveled the country extensively, it was sad and surprising. I am not one of those Americans who thinks America is a great, unparalleled country. Most of American culture and the American way of life disgusts me. I have hoped to find a better place to live. But traveling to other countries, I've seen that there are lots of problems elsewhere too. America is worse than the UK in terms of inequality (the US has a greater homeless problem, as you pointed out). But the US is also a richer country than the UK, and the median family is still better off materially. You mentioned LA and San Francisco. Have you been to the US and traveled extensively? Or are you basing your views on what you read online? What you see in a few large cities is not what you see in the average American suburb. One thing that Brits (and Europeans) generally do not understand is how vast and varied the US is. Did you know that the state of California alone is three times the size of England? (I met a British girl on shaadi.com who thought California was a city. I met another who thought I must live near San Francisco since I am from California. She was shocked when I told her that the distance from where I live to San Francisco was greater than the distance from London to Edinburgh.) Did you know that the US has five times as many people as the UK? You can't form your opinion on what life is like in such a vast country based upon some viral images of San Francisco. Are you sure that the majority of the UK is aware that it is no longer a major world power? Many Brexit voters seem to think otherwise. Being a world power matters (rightly or wrongly) in terms of a country's ability to maintain prosperity. Whether that prosperity is divided fairly is another matter (in the US it is not). But the (lower level of) prosperity in the UK is divided almost as unequally as it is in the US. This is in contrast to what is seen in many parts of Western Europe. So I have a more negative view of the UK standard of living than you do. In terms of quality of life, most of continental Western Europe has a lower ceiling and higher floor than the US. The UK has a a lower ceiling than the US and a floor that is perhaps as low as the US floor (or maybe very slightly higher). MAYBE a poor person in the UK is slightly better off than in the US, but I don't think that the average person is. Compare salaries for professional jobs in the UK and US sometime. It may shock you. Of course people continue to arrive on the shores of the UK. There is a massive third world out there that is very far behind the western world. I'm not sure that that's something to take comfort in. It would be like people in Punjab dismissing its declining quality of life by pointing to the number of bhaiyas who keep arriving. Finally, what is the UK "soft power" that you speak of? I am curious.

  34. I think the friction has arisen on this subject partly from us looking at this issue from very different perspectives. My recent (as in turn-of-the-year) mode of thinking is coloured by the way in which I'm trying to analyse Sikh history in its entirety as a grounded historical and social narrative within the Punjab, and how it relates to the greater milieu of Indian history. I'm trying to get a grasp of how our past has lead to our present, and what the present might implicate for our future. As such I'm comparing and contrasting our emergence, struggles, and establishing a presence (of sorts) with other groups and cultures in different parts of the world; one of those subjects I've started to read-up on is the founding of the United States. It's difficult not to feel a sense of admiration for people who left their homes and the countries of their birth in order to start a new life in a place that was largely untamed wilderness. Whatever they built, they built from absoutely nothing. And what they did manage to eventually build was a new civilisation. While their impact on the existing cultures of the Natives is undoubtedly horrific, to say the least, my mind was still firmly focused on the resolve, determination and achievements of the newcomers to create something siginificant on this strange, new soil. How did they do it without even one spiritual master to lead them? Yet they managed to oust the British from their land and secure their independence through sheer strength and force of will despite the British using brutality against what were essentially their own people. What divine blessings did these Americans possess that we were never granted in our own struggle? As for karmic tolls and the rest of it, I'm not bringing that into this discussion. It's irrelevant. It also opens up some rather uncomfortable and difficult to answer questions that just can't be quantified solely from the perspective of the cold gaze of history. Leave that to the metaphysics.

You called me an embarrassment to sardars, yet you are praising people who are not singhs because they find the thought of being a singh embarrassing.

  41. I usually like to look at the root of problem. The reason why people are going more towards other pseudo cults like radhaswamis is because lack of bhramvidya in the panth as i posted earlier - http://www.sikhsanga...a-in-the-panth/ ..it's replaced by bhandi parchar - abhramic version of Vahiguroo/God, rational, missionary, bhausari thought which shoved sikhi in a tunnel. This is single handly an number one cause of people are swaying away from sikhi because of our parcharaiks and parchar. While political activism is good and have very special place in sikhi as dharam and rajneeti are not seperated they are together. I feel we have gone way overboard with political activism in gurdwaras to the point that we have forgotten spiritual sikhi (adhyatamic sikhi- sant aspect in panth) which is main layer of one's life. It's from sant aspect of one's life(dya, bhramgyan, sam dristhi, satogun) sipahi is born not the other way around..as i mentioned earlier - sipahi spirit in sikhi should be born, properly controlled, preserved and nurture from sant spirit not from sheer tamogun..sheer tamogun makes one rakshash and khalsa is not rakshash.!! Anyway, parchariks have gone way overboard with doing parchar of sipahi aspect in sikhi i.e - dhaadi varan/katha of our warriors, our guru sahiban..showing only one aspect- sipahi aspect of our guru sahib- For eg- Potral of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji as only an warrior, not divine majestic master and giver to people from all walks of life..there were reasons why there are 52 poets in guru maharaj darbar, there was reason why guru gobind singh maharaj was divine master and giver of raag vidya to all, there was a reason why guru gobind singh maharaj created taksal , nirmale, sevapanthis (scholary knights in the sikhism), there was a reason why sri guru gobind singh ji wrote majestic gurbani in true poetic form such as - jaap sahib, sri akaal ustat showing sargun and nirgun beauty of Vahiguroo and there was a reason why bhai nand lal wrote deep spiritual craving poetry towards majestic divine sri guru gobind singh ji so our pendu bandai don't potray sri guru gobind singh according to their own mindset and according to their own little tunnel version of sikhi..!!..but everything happened opposite in the panth..!! We didn't even get the basic and extremely important matter right. We failed to provide theological explanation of what is Vahiguroo in sikhism and let alone mystic layer of sikhi. Most of our parcharaik(missionary etc type) have used abrahamic, semetic version of god in Sikhism to explain Vahiguroo...people need to do their own research on sargun nirgun aspect of vahiguroo (this is what most sikh theology is based on)..On this forum we had a deep vichar with bijla singh ji on it - http://www.sikhsanga...irgun-nirankar/ ..people can read upon it and do their own search..!! There is no bar set for our parcharaiks in the gurwdaras. So any joe blow comes along do parchar with their own mindset/bibek buddhi to make a quick buck. Gyani thakur singh ji patialawale himself said in japji sahib katha that i can go deep but people who are listening are complaining that there is no bir ras in the katha, even sangata are addicted to bir ras katha which are being feed everyday in the gurdwara without keeping balance. The reason our people are attracted to radhaswamis is our parcharik fault and our fault of failing to demand some depth- ask parcharak questions, ask committe vales collectively as sangat to have question and answers sessions with our parcharaiks..radhaswamis steal stuff from our mystic traditions and mix it little bit brand it and present to normal joe with fancy terms- normal joe blow gets totally blown off with mysticism..while radhaswamis steal stuff from our mystic tradition/layer our parcharaiks are still stuck at the shariat layer of dharam and feed shariat layer of dharam all day long without going to depth to sangat. Normal joe in sangat thinks with ignorance- looks like this is sikhi and search somewhere else to fulfill their curiosity or get peace. Our parchariks have shoved sikhi in a tunnel and bought beautiful divine path of sikhi down to mere "dhadi varan, sakhiyas', sikhitothemax translations' Ang- 1083 saraa sareeath lae ka(n)maavahu || Let your practice be to live the spiritual life. thareekath tharak khoj ttolaavahu || Let your spiritual cleansing be to renounce the world and seek God. maarafath man maarahu abadhaalaa milahu hakeekath jith fir n maraa ||3|| Let control of the mind be your spiritual wisdom, O holy man; meeting with God, you shall never die again Sorry don't want make this too long, each one of us and parcharak have moral and spiritual duty to explore sikh deep within both internally and externally. 42. what i've noticed is that while there still maybe alot of elders that are Radhasoami...but their kids who are born/bred in UK question Radhasoami-ism and find it flawed...hence why i know of sooo many kids who don't want to associate or go to their satsangs in Bedford like their parents do and now call Sri Guru Granth Sahib Jee their Guru (whether they're even kesdadhri or not). I think the elder generation are uneducated and follow anything that walks, but their own next generation will come back into Gurmat...and i'm seeing that first hand happening now - i know of too many examples!

  43. I'm gonna be quite honest with you all here, hand on my heart I would have to say that the most die-hard supporters of Khalistan I have met are actually monas with hair cuts. Many of these people have unbelievable pride in the nation of Punjab...they are an inspiration. Even myself, although I have no trouble identifying myself as a Khalistani, have to say that I would prefer our independent nation simply be called 'Punjab'. As for the people the OP call's 'moderates'. From my experience the one common reason most of them seem to give me whenever we discuss the matter is : "Punjab is landlocked" "it ain't got no sea port" "how can a country without a sea-port survive?" I can only take it that these people have spent way too much time watching titanic and old films about the navy, and not enough time researching whether or not such countries actually exist. Apparently, according to the 'moderates', the following list is an entirely made up list of fictional countries : Austria, Belarus, Czech Republic, Ethiopia, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Leitchenstein, Luxemburg, Mongolia, Moldovia, Nepal, Niger, Paraguay, Rawanda, Serbia, Slovakia, Switzerland, Uganda, Uzbekistan etc etc. The geography of the average 'moderate' obviously does not extend any further than Ibiza or the the Cosa Blanca

  44. Please don't delete this. if you don't agree, you don't have to comment. the worst that will happen is that people will do more kamai than normal. Guru Nanak Sahib ji graced the mortal coil in human form during pooranmashi (full moon). Since then, Sikhs have celebrated this anniversary every pooranmashi for hundreds of years. Baba Nand Singh ji Kaleranwale has blessed the Sikh panth by teaching a viddhi (method) by which we may make spiritual progress by leaps and bounds. Those who remain awake on the night preceding the day of the pooranmashi will attain the spiritual merit of doing one month worth of amritvela. Those who remain awake the whole night preceding the pooranmashi of Guru Nanak Sahib Maharaj ji’s advent to this world will attain the kamai (merit) of one year worth of amritvela! The point is to remain in yaad of Guru Nanak sahib ji the whole night. This year pooranmashi of Guru Nanak Sahib ji’s prakash diharra is on the 21st of November. This means you need to start on the night of November 20 and continue at least until the sun rises (or as much as you possibly can do). Das has heard that Baba Nand Singh ji said that Guru ji took avtar at 12:21 AM. People sometimes do nindya of such things as they fall outside the bounds of ordinary human logic. However Gurmat has its own logic, it is internally consistent. But this does not mean that one can figure out the ocean of Guru Granth Sahib ji through mere philosophizing. If that were true the ocean would in reality be a mere puddle. Gurbani unequivocally states that the bachan of a True Sant automatically comes true. Have sharda in your Guru’s bachan about the sants. -source
