  1. There are different groups of Sikhs in UP. 1. Sikhs or Punjabi Jats who moved into UP in the early 1700s located mainly in and around Moradabad district. These Sikhs have a hybrid culture and religion which is a mix of Sikhi and cultural Hinduism. They are called Pachhandas. They number about 400,000. 2. Vanjara Sikhs, they have been in UP since the early 1700s and form a part of the larger Vanjara group of people all over India. They number about 50,000. 3. Sikhs from probably earlier than the 17th century who migrated either from Punjab or from central India who trace their link to Sikhi from Guru Nanak or some of the Sangats founded by the later Gurus. They are similar to the Bhatras of Punjab and they have a legend that they were originally from Sri Lanka and followed Guru Nanak back to Punjab and north India. They are a small group of about 10,000 people and are called Ramaiya Sikhs. They have a number of villages in Bijnor district. 4. Sikh settlers from Punjab in 1947. These are the Sikhs we normally think of when we talk of UP Sikhs. They are settled in both UP and Uttarakhand in districts which are a part of the Terai region. 5. However the Sikhs from the news report are not from either of these, they seem to have come to UP in the last 150 years and the link they make is to Maharani Jindan who escaped to Nepal from British custody after the annexation of Punjab. She would have had retainers with her who were Sikh and other Sikhs from Punjab would have also visited her in Nepal which was just 20 kms from these villages in the news report. Later after 1857 mutiny, many of the Sikhs Rajas and other nobility who fought on the side of the British were gifted land holdings in these districts such as Bahraich and Gorakhpur. They would have sent their people here to settle and look after the land. So it looks like these Sikhs especially are a combination of these two groups of settlers. Being a small population they would have lost their Punjabi language skills and started to speak Hindi instead. There are also Sikhs from this group over the border in Nepal. 6. Local converts to Sikhi. Over time many Hindus have converted to Sikhi for a number of reasons. The larger Gurdwaras such as the ones in Kanpur, Varanasi, Agra, Nanakmata inspire local Hindus especially of the lower castes to become Sewadars and then these Sewadars become Sikhs and in many cases bring their families into Sikhi. There have been cases of mass conversions to Sikhi such as the one of Jatavs in the villages around Meerut in the late 1980s. These Jatavs got involved in a dispute over elections to the village Pardhan position in one of their villages with the local Jats who in this case were Muslims. The Muslims tried to use their muscle power to force the Jatav candidate to take back his candidature. As some of these Jatavs had become Sikhs in a few years prior a decision was made for all the Jatavs to become Sikhs to take on the Muslims. Sikhs from Meerut and some Sikh organisations from UP also helped these Jatavs. As for the treatment of UP Sikhs, the groups 1, and 3 do not have any issues. The problems is that we have become so Punjab centric in our thinking that we assume that non-Punjabi Sikhs are just a handful and the vast majority of Sikhs are Punjabi. So when these Sikhs come to Punjab then they are assumed to be Hindu converts and their lack of knowledge of Punjabi is assumed to be a lack of commitment to Sikhi. But with the increase in social media and internet more and more Punjabi Sikhs are realising that there are some large groups all across India who have a link to Sikhi as old as the one that they have.

  5. We're probably the only faith in the world so obsessed and tied to one language. It really shuts other people out. Do Buddhists in South East Asia speak any Indian language? Do Indonesians speak Arabic? Do European Christians speak Aramaic? Do western Jews speak Hebrew? It's one of the reasons Sikhi never spread much beyond Punjab.

  6. Yes it's almost solved. Thanks to Guru Sahib! Speech therapy really helps. Many people try to cure stammering by medicines or by giving badaam(almonds). Speech therapy is the only way to cure stammering. Hritik Roshan of Bollywood had strong stammering but he got cured through therapy.

According to the Office of National Statistics (ONS) about 4.2% of men and 7.9% of women suffered domestic abuse in England and Wales during 2018. This equates to about 685,000 male victims and 1,300,000 women. The article above are suggesting it is at least 7 times more prevalent in SIkhs ?! # *Sorry, just re-read the Original post/article which said 70% female (not female or male) - SWA/article is saying it is at least 8-9 times more prevalent - yeah, right !

  9. It's basically a psychological conversion. It's something to be afraid of because it is a manifestation of a cultural and mental weakness on part of the converted. What it is basically saying is that our own thing is so inadequate that we move away from it towards someone else's belief system/worldview.

  10. Are the Indians smart enough to enact all of the above, bhenji? I don't, for one moment, doubt any of your keenly observed points, but have they the intellectual wherewithal to design and implement such a plan, that will take generations to come to fruition, in order to suppress, subvert, demoralise, and ultimately destroy an entire faith and its followers? Those street-5hitting, wealth and status obsessed Indians have the nous for all that? I don't know, I think we need to look a lot closer to home for the culprits who are enabling our decline. When it comes to governmental policies designed to hamstring Sikhs, then I agree, but what of the other social and everyday issues that aren't affected by the devious hand of the state? That's all on us, surely?

  12. Going back to the OP. Do people think we've become weak bhangra paa-ing clowns now? Is the author of the video right in his statement regarding the Delhi Sikh men who were massacred because they'd failed to live up to the physical/military aspects of the Sikh way of life? I've experienced that demeaning thing where someone finds out you are Sikh and points their fingers in the air, moves their shoulders up and down and goes 'balle balle'. Do you think people actually see us as warriors when they meet us in the west? Or sticklers to an archaic religion/way of life? (in their eyes not mine!)

  13. I think we're coming at this from completely different perspectives. My desire is to protect, not to control or distort. Again, you're applying idealised, perfectionist methods to people and situations that are the complete antithesis of such behaviour. You aren't acknowledging the base attributes of human nature that must be taken into account. You're ascribing godly qualities to ungodly situations and individuals. If anything, that indicates a fear of taking tough decisions that are at odds with a mentally soothing sense of self-righteousness; at worst it's sticking one's head in the sand and hoping for the best. I apologise if that's not the case, but from my experience those who espouse beliefs of non-action in the face of a threat or a decline, do so not due to any concrete conviction, but because they are riddled with fear. I'm not applying that to you, of course. So we should immolate ourselves on the bonfire of our beliefs and convictions until we've completely destroyed ourselves, to prevent the enemy from doing so? From a spiritual perspective, Guru Tegh Bahadhur sacrificing himself is a wildly different scenario to a fella from Cornwall doing the same thing. To understand why requires a conversation that occurs on a level beyond conservative rationalism.

  14. True, but it had genuine precedence in scriptures which definitely were as old as the hills. The Brahmins may have collated and enforced a set of teachings relatively recently, but those teachings originate from a prior period. The Brahmins can claim they "only" meant to document various practices, but its purpose was more than that: to allow them dominance over a social hierarchy. My original assertion stands: dogma is human nature lent conviction through theology.

  16. The Uncle Toms in our community (more so the apparently smart, younger generation) have fallen for this hook, line, and sinker. It's like a Diet Sikhi version of the faith that's being peddled; a watered-down interpretation that's filtered exclusively through Western thought. Why are our bhandars doing the other side's work for them when they should be rallying against it? Is it really so basic as throwing out centuries of quite nuanced and considerate tradition for something that's less of a hassle to digest and follow, regardless of whether it's rooted in any genuine precedence? We're a cheap, shallow people, and it disgusts me. Bunch of mugs.

  17. Jagraj bhai ji (of BoS) points out that Anglos played some weird Jedi mind tricks on our lot (like 'Sikhs don't preach and convert!") and we quickly brought into it despite our own Sikh culture and history clearly being the very opposite direction. It's the same with all the 'race' theory crap our people brought into. I mean it so obviously goes against Sikh conceptualisations of Sikh society but many of our lot jumped on it because it made them feel 'special'. It's really cringeworthy to see how our lot are so easy to manipulate like this. And the other side must be in hysterics at our gullibility (I don't know about half devil but 'half child' for real!) We're only seeing people starting to question a lot of obvious bull5hit put in our heads now. When any outsiders (like the English) can come in and in effect set the very fundamentals of our faith, and that too for decades/centuries, we're clearly in deep trouble and missing something VERY important. How many things that we consider as Sikh are actually Anglo additions or influence? Like the whole Charitrio Pakyaan prudery! Given this, are we really surprised that we still have hordes of apnay that think that Sikhi is somehow in complete alignment with western liberal thought. Though I should point out that the other extreme of narrow minded clannishness isn't much better of an option long-term either.

  18. I believe this process started during colonialism. Anglos pretty quickly started to emphasise their perceived analogous relationship between Sikhs and Hindus as similar to that of Protestants and Roman Catholics. Many prominent people amongst our lot brought into this hook, line and sinker. And so began this strange relationship where influential apnay projected Sikhi through the lens of their imperial masters creating 'Sikhism'. So this is no new process but the culmination of a process that has been going on for at least a century. It explains a lot. Especially the subtle sidelining of Dasam Granth.

  22. Let me reflect on this. We really need to get the panth's Braj Bhasha knowledge up for such things. Though, I'll say outright right now, I'm not sure if the Chaubis Avtaar narratives of Dasam Granth are purely didactic, with the avtaars playing some moral/ethical role models. If I recall rightly, Lord Rama had Ravan's sister's nose chopped off, just because she fancied him!! lol If that's the case, it would justify any attacks by Ravan in my eyes. Turning the whole narrative around.

  26. UP and Bihar is notorious for highway bandits/ looters, and general criminality. Back in the day Punjabi truckers used to travel in convoys through there before major highways were built, especially at night. You will be at heightened risk if travelling in a single vehicle as they can visually see you as an outsider. This jatha was travelling with enough people to be safe, but I think they miscalculated the situation when they were getting extorted. You have to be smart and flexible when in a vulnerable situation. If you can get passage with a payout, then that's best. Or, travel with plenty of "religious" swords to send the right signal.

All we can do is be more sophisticated about power, money, representation, and keeping a really good eye on people. But wherever that percentage lies, that's a lot of potential traitors. You have a Sangat of 100. What 3 to 10? More than enough in any group. And it's usually one of these that takes to politics, not always. Fine line between crab mentality, and holding our representatives accountable or to a standard.

  32. That is very true. But there is little chance of those plans being implemented. When we have Sikhs that go around pedaling the if your a "hindu be a good Hindu. If your a muslim be a good muslim". Sikhs cant even organise any kind of parchaar or info on Sikhi right outside the Golden temple. It has taken an outside organisation such as Basics of Sikhi. To come up with a idea to build something so many non Sikhs can learn about the faith as they visit.

Their message was simple – we stand together, shoulder to shoulder, and we will not let terror tear us apart. The gathering had opened with a prayer from the Koran followed by a two minute silence before organiser Raf Hussain said: “Let us today pledge to fight hatred as one unified force and condemn the criminals who wish to sow division by using religion or race.”

  41. Muslims and Sikhs both believe in One God and thats a very important bond. Infact according to Sikhism, it is the basis of Bhagti that there is ONE GOD. EK OANKAAR. best way to give parchar to muslims is to give them Zafarnama and Bhai Nand Lal Ji's writings and once they start loving them(which is only a matter of time) start giving them Gurbani Translations. Sadly, hindus believe in devi devta who are limited to trai-gunni maya. Hindus believe in Krishna to be God and krishan used deceit and was lusty insaan. Its tough to make hindus understand Gurbani and concept of ONE GOD. So best way to parchar to them is to give the GURU ITIHAAS. Itihaas of battle of Chamkaur, shaheedi of Sahibzaadey, concept of martyrdom. Once they realize that Sikh warriors were lakhs of times more brave and ETHICAL IN WAR TACTICS than brahma vishnu shiv etc, then u can start giving them Gurbani Translations.

  44. Sanskrit and persian dictionaries help us in understand Gurbani but the final authority of the meaning of a word for a sikh is the way it is used in Gurbani. for example: the word kirpaan is made from Kirpaa and Aan and we can see meanings of Kirpaa and Aan from dictionaries. But to understand the meaning of word 'kirpaan' we have to read Gurbani. Kirpaan means a sword that is used for doing 'kirpaa' and protecting 'aan'. What are Punj Kakaars? Just as Dumalla Parkash by Baba Fateh Singh was the Roop of Akaal Purakh. Similarly the Punj Kakaars are part of God-approved Uniform of his loved ones. Punj Kakaars are for both for saints and soldiers. Significance of Kakaar- Kach 1. Saintly significance of Kach is that it represents high moral character and and a symbol that adultery is a big Haraam(sin) 2. Soldierly significance of Kach is it represents HONOUR. Brahm Kavach is a Mahaan gupt baani of Khalsa Panth and Satguru ji has used the word 'Kach' for honour of a warrior in battlefield. ਬਿਸ਼੍ਵ ਪਾਲ ਭੂਪਾਲ ਪੱਛ ਪਲ ਭੱਛ ਰਣ ਕੱਛ ਅੱਤ੍ਰੀ ॥
