  1. Feem in unsubstantial quantities as always been common amongst rural population as it is commonly believed to prevent cardiac problems and so during strokes people would often go into their pockets to grab a phhaki. It is highly doubted however that Guru Maharaj gave their singhs afeem amongst modern day kathavachiks and Gurpartaps got be taken on face value as rachna of 19th century, and we must understand 19th century sikhi not to be exactly equivalent to 18th century sikhi as we may consider it a puratan source for being pre British but it doesnt change that it was written in midpoint of timeline between us and Maharaj. Bhai Santokh Singh himself asks for khema and instructs khalsa to edit his work and proofread. There are several mistakes such as topic of raagmala, within his writings. See it as itihasic granth, not as pedestal of gurmat unlike Bhai Gurdas ji dia vaaran or even Bhai Nand Lal ji Goye Bhai Anand Singh's writings. On topic of afeem, fauj would have barely any time for recovery between morche so afeem and degh were parvaan perhaps. There is mention of Maharaj ordering singhs to take afeem when they said they felt demoralized. This is a sakhi held controversial amongst others.

  2. When engaging with the text, you basically gotta remove yourself from the modern, post-Singh Sabha/Colonialism version of "Sikhism" and understand the time it was written in. Lots of people in the panth don't wanna do this/don't have the understanding and get freaked out after reading it.

  5. The earliest reference I've come across is in Sainapati's Sri Gursobha, where Singhs are described as having afeem ahead of their long journey southwards. This source is purportedly contemporary to dasmesh pita, Sainapati being one of the darbari kavis.

  6. I think the use of afeem by the panth was done in a context a million miles away from modern recreational drug use. If we superimpose that framework on Sikh historical references, I think we're guaranteed to get the wrong end of the stick. I believe a lot of it was medicinal and maybe even tactical (i.e. reducing fatigue on long distance travelling). You have to understand how such substances were/are used within Panjabi culture to even have a chance to grasp it fully.

  7. It's a can of worms for sure. Feem for medicinal purposes is understandable considering there wasn't a Boots chemist or an A&E nearby. Some cheeky bugger5 would say it was for recreational purposes. Others would say an avatar doesn't require medicine or similar things, therefore these claims are false. Who knows.

  8. Many people ask "100 Japji Sahibs per day!? Where the time for that?" According to Giani Takhur Singh, do 5 with purest concentration then 25 will automatically happen on its own,no matter where / wha yer doing (off by heart is a MUST)! Then 25 to 100! BUT... I reiterated something now u know. So am here to mention, stick with one something and do it! If you have iccha to manage 100 Japji Sahibs, wake Amritvela n do ONE! Do it dead slow, like "Ik O-ankaar... Ik t k matlab hunda?" Or Hukam rjai chalna, Nanak Likhia naal. Hukam jani k command..." REPEAT these thoughts out loud! Extremely quickly you'll b doing 5 with purest concentration, accordimg to Giani Takhur Singh Ji. I'd like to share my thing. My thing's not 100 Japji Sahibs, it's something entirely different. Long ago my friend told me "So n so jathe did 7 Baania, 2 Sukhmani Sahibs and 2.5 hours of meditation / Other Baanias!" I heard this in 2009 but did something about it in 2018! I guess this rehat touched my heart (a book will confirm the Jathas' rehat)!!! So since 2018 I been doing one Sukhmani Sahib and 1.5 hours Naam jap on top o 7 Baanis... It feels awesome! Concentration is a MUST and this Anandpurbic state will touch you in so many ways. SO! Whatever rehat you hear, one will surely to your heart. Maybe it's "Do one Maala mool mantar with concentration. If u failed an iota of concentration, DO NOT turn the Maala!" Maybe it's"Do 7 Baanias and one Shabd Hazare" THIS REHAT! Can literally be ANYTHING. So, how do YOU know which Rehat is it? IT'S the one your mind keeps going back to. THAT rehat or discipline is for you! Maharaaj's calling out, pushing u into that Naam Jaap, whichever form it may b in. It can even b Seva at Gurudwara whilst reciting one prayer. Once you do it, Kirpa will happen. Also, following this Sangat, Simran and Seva across seven days is a good starting point! Or if u tried many things but feel like that wasn't for u, start on "That thing" on your mind and progress on it. Start by halving it (as what I been doing)... You want some of it, right?

  9. Someone sent me a video a few weeks back of a Punjabi and Gujji gay wedding in London! They did lavan in their house, had a tape playing lavan. My mum works in a hospital and she was telling my dad how an asian man is in the hospital because he had a stroke when his son told him he's gay. Feel so sorry for the dad, no man deserves that.

  11. I agree with this, I've got no idea who Gurpreet California Singh is but one thing i do know, every time someone from our community get's into a position of fame/power/influence in whatever shape or form our expectations from them turn into you have to do for us, this is evident across the board, when Tan Singh Dhesi was elected as an MP for Slough he was criticised by loads of people from the Sikh community for not doing enough for Sikhs, you had Singh's from all over the UK slating him when he said his responsibility is to the people of Slough who elected him (it doesn't mean he doesn't raise issues relating to Sikhs, he does). We, as a community, are our own worst enemies, if all you want to do with your charity is help families in Punjab, help them, there are lots of people that need help in the world, focus on what you think is important. If you feel Khalsa Aid doesn't match up to your point of view, don't donate to them, simple as. @Jonny101 The person you spoke to hit the nail on the head, Ravi Singh has bought the amount of charity works Singhs do into the limelight, we need that positive PR.

  12. I don't think normal, everyday, run of the mill people like can understand the pressure people feel when they are put in the limelight, if that pressures not kept in check then it will manifest into many things, some people go off the rails, drugs, alcohol, sleeping with anything that moves, others will internalise it all leading to mental health issues including depression. Industries like Bollywood are a club where you follow the rules or your careers over, only the rules they have don't really resonate with normal people, i remember a video that someone had shot last year of a private party where you had A-list Bollywood actors and directors openly snorting coke, looking at the camera like they where living on another planet, if this had been a normal person their career would have been over but they all protect each other. It's all a sad state of affair's, it's basically a spiders web that once you get tangled in it you have to move at the same rhythm as the spider or your finished.

  13. This i agree with 100%, but that discussions for another thread. I've said in my post i'm neither for or against Ravi Singh, everyone has there own personal experience, it's unfortunate that your has been so negative up to a point where you've lost faith. We filmed a promotional piece for a search and rescue charity down south a while back and i was amazed at how cut throat the charity "industry" is, they have to fight tooth and nail to get your money so the more pr they get the better but unfortunately people who actually need help suffer because of it.

  14. I really am on the fence about this (and i'm not standing up for them), I've met Ravi a few times and he's a decent guy who always want's to do the right thing but i thing but Khalsa Aid has grown a lot over the last few years and managing an charity is a huge task, one which he isn't that experienced in and i think it's lost focus from what it was originally set up to do. He's always said Khalsa Aid was a Humanitarian Charity who help where there is need, we sit here and judge them for helping in Syria, Iran, Afghanistan and not so much in Punjab, I personally don't have an issue with that, to me a charity should help and not look at the race or religion of those they help, if you want to donate to a charity that specifically helps a certain religion then you should donate to them, simple. I donate to Unique Home in Jalandhar who specifically help girls who have been abandoned, it's very difficult for international charities to operate in Punjab due to the amount of politics and red tape (although some have managed to do it) so i donate to a charity based over there that i know have been vetted and are legit. I've never understood the hate towards Khalsa Aid, specifically Ravi Singh, i think even if he was devoting 100% of his time to causes in Punjab someone would get up and take issue with that, each to their won i suppose.

I love seeing what's happening around the world with the environment with people being told to stay indoors, the lack of pollution has let the earth breath again, it brilliant, the thing is i don't live with my head in the clouds (although sometime's i wish i could), as soon as humans are let out again it won't take long to suffocate the earth again.

  16. My Grandmother passed away last year, she's been ill for a while so she knew, she did a lot of path, we grew up learning from her. She had breathing problems one night and her breathing pretty much stopped, she was like that for a good while, we called 999, paramedics were working on her and about to take her down the stair's into the ambulance, she woke up. She didn't want to go to hospital, we had to sign a waiver form and call the GP to do a home visit the next day. After the GP had visited the next day she sits my mum down, mum asks her what happened, she said she went to a place were there were people being beaten up and screaming, she was told to go away, it wasn't her time. 2 weeks later to the day she passed away, looking back i don't know what to make of it, I'm still processing her loss, she was one of the main people that bought me up, she was a extremely religious woman, she didn't fear death one bit. The amount of time's I've heard similar account's is uncanny, are we just storing the account's like these subconsciously and when certain chemicals are released we access those thoughts, does it actually happen? maybe we're better off not knowing.

  17. It's a cultural thing, it has very little to do with religion. People from different backgrounds have come here (UK) and the newer generation's want to feel as though they fit in so pursue a western culture where their parents/grand-parents pursued an eastern/traditional culture. When i grew up in the 80's our generation was torn between two cultures, boy's and girls would go out, drink, have relationship's in secret because they still feared their families and their communities, now the next generation are doing it all out in the open. There's no right or wrong in all of this, we just have to try and do the best by our kids and hope they listen. Before the British invaded India it was a lot more sexually liberated than any other country, the Victorian's turned up and made it all taboo, what we're seeing now is a rebellion to that mindset, especially in India.

  18. if you look in bolly wood seriels and films they always call sikh girls simran or amrit , she always has an affair with a nonsikh , its called programming, the neoliberals have been using it for decades as has b'wood before 84 there were no santa banta type characters or confused sikh females...now every film has similar characterisations of sikh males and females males- stupid, cowardly, drunkerds, inept with women . the girls: are funloving , party girls, clueless about sikhi, etc Just because some tramp puts the name Kaur behind her first name doesn't make her one, it could be a ordinary actress trying to discredit Kaur name , just like they are the name of Singh . People with zero history or dharamic values will do it because Singhs and Kaurs show them up.

Sikhistore are great, i order from them on a regular basis, they sent me out the wrong colour dastaar once and let me keep the incorrect one and sent out the right one, not many companies do that kind of stuff. On the subject of winners and looser's, i have a friend at one of the tech firms sub-contracted to make on of the contact tracing app for the NHS, if they don't get any more work they would still be okay given the amount of money they are being paid.

The best thing to do when people post stuff like this is simple, do a little digging on line, find their LinkedIn profile, find out who they work for and send some screenshots of what heir employee is doing, simple. My friends daughter was getting pestered by a guy on twitter a while back, she did all but 5 minutes worth of digging online and sent a load of screenshots to the guys company, I don't think he works there anymore.

  28. The way a lot of the public have handled this whole thing in the west is an embarrassment, there were queues of people yesterday evening wanting to get their fix of processed fast food before McDonald's closed there door's for a few week's, this whole thing is a reset button for us all, we've become too reliant of the like's of Amazon and having everything now, we need to step back for a few weeks and take a long hard look at what we've been doing, when we come back from this we should be supporting small business and local economy, not billionaires who couldn't care less about you. Cashless is already here, this virus being spread with hand contact is just another reason that will be used to push it, it's just not as secure as it should be yet.

  29. GNNSJ on Soho Road shut on Saturday evening and have a live feed on their YouTube page, personally i think it's a good idea in the short term, It would have been full on Sunday morning especially with the elder generation who are most at risk, the more we do to protect them the better, i've been going to there since it opened in the late 70's and it has never shut, i found it disheartening but it's for the greater good. A lot of other Gurdwara's shut on Sunday afternoon but are providing help for the elderly.

  33. The older generation generally don't appreciate change or anyone rocking the boat, sit them in a gurdwara, they get comfortable and they'll forgive a few mistakes here and there, they were bought up not to ask questions and just accept what was being said to them, now it's slightly different, we ask the questions and this makes the elder's get uncomfortable. It's a sorry state of affairs where it has taken something like this for the wider Sikh "representatives" to react, if they had done this (and as of yesterday they and Dhadrian Wale have been banned from all UK Gurdwara's) when there were allegations of sexual abuse against then maybe it wouldn't have got this far, but they let him open his own Gurdwara in Coventry to do parchar from, does anyone really think they give two hoots about being banned in the UK when they have a huge cash cow in countries like Malaysia and Australia to name a few.

  40. One thing I dont want Sikhs to do is become like muslim Idol breakers nor like Christians destroy the culture of the people. Muslim invaders destroyed beautiful art and temples because fear of idol worship. They forced ppl to convert and these ppl instead added their own version to islam of worshipping ancestors, graves, pirs etc.. Education is better than force. People will leave the idols themselves or turn them.into art. Visvhwakarma has been part of the craft/laborers culture for a long time. Many carpenters pray to him before starting any work. Sadly even some sikhs. However I also know carpenter Sikhs that have replaced the mangal to viswakarma with benti to satguru. Also many sikhs have not given up caste names, caste pride, nor caste identity lorhi, bhangra, preference for male sons. And other cultural practices and some are against the teachings of sikhi, yet we expect other ppl to promptly do so. And try to force them to do it now. Also i just thought of a solution to the caste problem. We need to keep last names or at least know them. So we know our family history and background and dont marry people with same last names. But we could try not to teach our kids or tell other people what caste we are. Also most kids find it hard to tell someones caste from a last name unless the last name is common. But other castes especially in india are adoptig those common high caste names..lol. its possible casteism will be eradicated esp in the west as ppl will have to just take a person word that yes im this caste.

So stop packing your suitcases and booking your one way flights to India Lolz Relax we are here to stay. Infact UK is the new India. We are gonna take over this place. 44. It is not like this. We Sikhs and Hindus and just about anyone else is not a threat to the UK. We are not demanding our own law or country. We do not go out of our way to not fit in. Like muslims do. Britian first has realised this. They are not stupid. They know we are no danger to the UK. infact they know alot of Sikhs are coconotised liberal people who would rather have a pint down the pub watching the footy then do a islamic protest. People need to wake up. This is a party against extremist muslims and not you. YOU ARE NOT THE TARGET. They will not try and deport you. maybe extremist muslims but that is only right. They are not a perfect party at the moment by any means and there are a few issues that need addressing in their manifesto and agendas to make it more appealing to the wider public. they also need better leadership and ideas. They need to drop this 'Christian' slogan that they have. which stems from deep insercuties as they feel their faith and freedom is under threat by islamists who want to convert them. The only reason they are brandishing the christian slogan is to combat Islam as they feel under threat. Which is understandable to a certain degree. Some people need to stop being scardy cats and fearful. We Sikhs are not exactly doing anything to combat islamic extremism in the uk so lets no interfere are raise our roses to people who are actually doing something. If not britian first then ukip.
