  1. Just watched it this afternoon. Speechless. I had low expectations when I first heard of it, because it's made by India, but saw what @dallysingh101 had to say, and thanks mate for your opinion on it, it was amazing. Genuinely think there should be more Punjabis making this sort of cinematic beauties, could get a much bigger market than middle aged aunties and uncles watching Punjabi cinema.

  3. The real figure of Sikhs in East Punjab (practising or not) today is definitely below 50%. There are many things going behind the scenes, the recent declaration by the Jathedar is a sign that panthic leaders are realizing the grave situation we have landed ourselves into without realizing (once again proving the anecdote with differing approaches to a coming storm by the foresighted Hindu, the adapting scheming Muslim and the dimwitted Sikh). Doaba will be the first region where Sikhs will be reduced to a minority below 30% of the population, this will be a first for a district in Modern Punjab. (Barring the exception of newly formed districts like Fazilka who were earlier part of Sikh majority districts). The lower the numbers in a district, the lesser political power and the more chances of religious repression. The Christian conversion is a problem all over Punjab but specifically the border belt, and more so Amritsar/Tarn Taran region rather than the Gurdaspur region which was mentioned in the earlier posts. The Gurdaspur Christian community is historically older (see older census) and not solely related to the new massive Christian missionary campaign in Punjab. It will be interesting to note if (all) Gujjars and other Muslim migrants who have settled (semi) permanently in Punjab are taken into consideration in these census. The combined percentage of Abrahamics (Christians and Muslims) is definitely 10% today in Punjab - a worrying figure. You are already seeing these religions clash with the others in the past 5 to 10 years - these things were unheard of in the 60s 70s 80s and even 90s. "Though Muslims share in the total population of Punjab still remains very low, the number of Muslims in Punjab has multiplied by six times in the five decades since 1961, while the total population has multiplied by a factor of 2.5. In 1961, the proportion of Muslims in the state population was only 0.80 percent; it has grown to 1.93 percent in 2011." Another thing you'll note is how the bottom 5 districts literacy wise are in the top 10 districts with the highest Sikh percentage. Sikhs need to focus on religious and worldly education to combat all obstacles the nation is facing. Akaal Sahai.

  6. 3. He claims to divine the proper pronunciation of ੴ by quoting a number of Gurbani lines. Like: ਏਕੋ ਜਪੀਐ ਮਨੈ ਮਾਹਿ ਇਕਸ ਕੀ ਸਰਣਾਇ ॥ The problem is if here, Gurbani says to japp the Eko (One), there are plenty of other places where it says to japp (recite) Gobind. Or other names. E.g., here Guru Ramdas Ji says to japp Gobind and in the same line also says to japp (recite) Hari! p541 Obviously, the command is not to recite particular words but to remember God through recitation. There are other Gurbani lines saying to recite Har, Ram, Ramaya, etc. For Basi to take a few lines telling us to recite Eko as a special command to recite only Eko is either stupid or deliberately misleading. He totally misconstrues many verses. E.g., ਗੁਰੁ ਪਰਮੇਸਰੁ ਏਕੋ ਜਾਣੁ ॥ Anybody familiar with Gurbani will interpret it as "Know the Guru and Parmesar to be one". As in the same thing. Instead he would claim that it means that Guru and Parmesar are Eko. Yeah Eko means one, but he's using it as a kind of proper noun.

  7. First of all, it seems "Gulbarg Singh Basi" is another beard-tying rationalist Uncle Ji trying so desperately to make Gurmat fit into a nice Western modernist box. Also he's the head of the "Global Sikh Economic Forum", which, I guess, instead of meeting in Davos like the World Economic Forum, must meet in Pathankot or something. Likely, it's 5 people and a fax machine. Anyways, as to his assertions: 1. He claims he's not the first person to question ੴ . Nirmal Singh Kalsi and Devinder Singh Chahal have as well. Oh, OK, so if Nirmal Singh Kalsi said so, I guess it's legit! Devinder Singh Chahal is also a rationalist "Sikh". 2. He claims Devinder Singh Chahal's made-up pronunciation of ਇਕ ਓਹ ਬੇਅੰਤ is wrong because of whatever reason. But the problem is neither of them have any basis and are just making stuff up. The alleged basis is just pulling out quotes from Gurbani claiming it tells you how to pronounce ੴ. But they don't. They are just asserting that those lines have anything to do with pronunciation. The lines are simply Gurbani principles, not a primer on how to pronounce ੴ. I (and all of us should) reject the notion that the entire Sikh world is stupid and for five hundred years no one knew how to even recite Jap Ji until these jokers came along.

  13. See, the thing is in which ever region you go locals will say "Our Punjabi dialect is correct. Our Grammar too is correct." However, Doaba only use one word for objects or meaning i.e. Door is darwajja. Now, Malwai may be backwards but door is darwajja, Booha or gate. Wind is hwa or poan. Whereas Doaba will only use hwa. Majja is similar to Malwai. Although Doaba is NOT to be underestimated (FWD in technology, economic and Hi Tech) it's not necessarily high in literature.

  15. In the UK, a part of it was the white establishment (police and social services) pandering to the notion of misogynistic Sikh father who cruelly oppresses his wonderful daughter. They'd whisk these poor oppressed girls away to 'safe houses' which were actually the opposite of what their name suggests. But they wouldn't do this to certain other communities. Plus, with broads, if you're strict it's 'oppression' and when you ease up, you've gone soft. Plus I know a lot of apneean behave appallingly in the face of any attempts at discipline and expectations of not acting in certain debased ways. Why can't we expect a bit more intelligence from jananis? It almost like the stereotype of many of them being dumb is true?

  18. I know but how in the world do we wake these people up. Once upon a time great kharkus and revolutionaries were born but nowadays everyone seems like a fuddhu for real. We really need to wake up Sikhs or we’re doomed. I’m doing my part by educating other people about Sikhi and spreading the idea of Sikh sovereignty to people. I got a white dude to talk about Sikh struggles against Islam on his podcast and he broadcasts to 4000 people. A lot of white people are against Islam.

  20. This is a common thing now in the west as well, it is the drift towards liberalism, which in my view is a mental disorder which acts to prevent the sufferer from even acting in his own self interests. Think what you like of Tommy Robinson but essentially he is someone who saw the takeover of Islam of his hometown and the victimisation of his people by Muslims and he tried to awaken his people. Look at how he was demonised by the leftists among the goray. Add to this how the white police officers and social workers were quite happy to see females from their own community be groomed by Pakistani Muslims. Only fanatical adherence to liberal principles can explain such suicidal behaviour. When you ideology trumps your common sense then you really are up sh1t creek without a paddle. The situation is not so gloomy though because there has been pushback now both in the west and among our people. Ravi Singh is being ridiculed by our people now for his one track liberal BS when even a few years he was considered almost a saint. The next generation they say is much more conservative than the generation before. We are seeing this more and more in real life and online.

  27. If you expect Western Punjabi youth to get into speaking and understand Punjabi then it should be in things that they are interested in. They are not necessarily going to be interested in Pardes/ Des Gippy Grewal type stuff. Though youtube has been a God send. I like watching some off the track travel shows on youtube. Got watching some Punjabis like Navdeep Brar who is travelling around the former Soviet Union. It's conversed in Punjabi and you can watch it with the elders as well.

  33. Punjabi learnt by Sikhs born in the west is predominantly learnt from the grandparents. However, now that the grandparents are going to be English speaking Generation X/latter boomers that is not going to be the case. The problem with parents is that they think that the kids will speak Punjabi in Punjabi school whereas they are only learning to read/write Punjabi. That is where the "crux" is, it is the SPEAKING. The prime place where there might be an opportunity to speak Punjabi is Punjab. If people don't want to do that, then they should go to Surrey in Canada to learn to speak Punjabi.

  34. Hebrew I think was not even common amongst Jews during the Roman occupation as they spoke Aramaic. So it was probably a dead language for more than 2000 years. I guess Hebrew was the unifying factor in the influx of the diverse Jewish diaspora back to Israel. I think a lot of people are of the opinion that the Jews in Israel come from East Europe. But a lot of them came from Middle East and North Africa. In fact the Mizrahi (the Jews of the middle east/ north africa) are the majority in Israel. When Israel was formed, the East European Jews (Ashkenazi ) and Mizrahi never mixed.

  35. Punjabis generally have this disconnect where they expect that their children are born speaking Punjabi without having to teach them. It's laziness because their priorities are elsewhere. It's like expecting kids to have big muscles without taking them to the gym.

  36. I think in one of the Punjabi Shaheed movies which came out in the 1970s there was confusion between Dyer and O'Dwyer. The assumption being that perhaps Udham Singh had killed the wrong man. Looking at what happened in 1919, it appeared that O'Dwyer was the greater culprit in that he wanted to commit mass atrocities in Punjab to beat the population into submission. Here is some excepts from the Hunter report on what other atrocities the British were committing at that time in Gujranwala. The Khalsa school was bombed and machine gunned in Gujranwala causing many deaths and injured. This is the haram.zada that did the bombing. Douglas Hugh Moffatt Carbery (theaerodrome.com)

  37. This was a surprisingly well made film! I had avoided watching this thinking it was the typical overacted, propagandist stuff like those three bhagat singh films they made in early 2000s or that gaddhar movie. Like dallysingh already stated, there is heavy Sikh representation and parallels to near and distant struggles against the powers that be. I’m actually surprised with those behind this film, that as non-sikh theywould go this far for us. Maybe it was unintentional, maybe not, but the gutt-wrenching end scenes will have every sikh thinking about 84. Honestly, I have not seen any Indian cinema produce a climatic scence of that calibre, or length even. And the very last scene….you can just picture it as a nod to our recent Sikh heroes. The transformation of unfathomable grief into target-locked bir-rass.

  38. It's a really good film guys. Very strong Sikh representation throughout, especially towards the conclusion. It isn't remotely cheesy like most if not all Panjabi films........plus not a spot of bhangra throughout. The lead actor and director nailed it. I can imagine a few million Hindus having new found respect for Sikhs from watching it too. I changed the OP from Metflix to Netflix now guys......lol

  39. Yes we do sit on chairs and wear socks, but we do also remove them and sit on the floor, if we want so. Have you ever been into a Gurdwara? How do you find us there? is it not similar to the video in your post? Then? What is your problem? Out of respect and tradition, when someone is doing parchar or keertan, we do sit in front of them on the floor and remove our socks. Chaudray jee, if you respect yourself, just respect our traditions. It is obvious, you have not paid attention to a single word in your video posted, rather looking at the surroundings. It is like a student going to class in school, pays not attention to what the teacher says, but looks around the ceilings, the floor and the walls. This attitude, will surely make him remain a dumb donkey!

  40. "Chaudry" Sahib da export da kamm hai: Here's his website: https://www.exportersindia.com/punjab/socks.htm Why are you all getting into his business? He was asking an earnest question, as to whether these Sikhras don't own any socks. He was a poor exporter looking to make a fortune selling each Sikh in the world two pairs of socks. Vechara Chaudry Sahib! Reminds me of this tuk: ਇਲਤਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਉ ਚਉਧਰੀ ਕੂੜੀ ਪੂਰੇ ਥਾਉ ॥ Eilath Kaa Naao Chaudhri Koorree Poorae Thhaao || The trouble-maker is called a leader, and the liar is seated with honor. ਮਲਾਰ ਵਾਰ (ਮਃ ੧) (੨੨) ਸ. 41. Admin, why did you delete the rest of the post? The two questions that remain make the post look like a reasonable, well-intentioned query. Who knows what the deleted portion looked like, but if it was anything like I could guess, was it calling Sikhs uncivilized for not sitting on chairs? Anyway, to "Chaudry" Sahib: You're not some ignorant "gora", as you used the word "Chaudry", so regardless of whether you are Muslim or Hindu, you should know that Sikhs sit on the floor in their Gurdwaras, just like Hindus in their Mandirs, and Muslims in their Maseets. So why are you acting like it's such a surprise that Sikhs sit on the floor. A Gurdwara is not a Lions lodge, nor is it an auditorium. Even if "Chaudry Sahib" didn't go to the talk, it's completely obvious that this is so. Just look at the sangat sitting on the langar mats. They're not sitting on the whole floor, they're just sitting on the long (lengthwise) langar mats. Talk about making a mountain out of a molehill.

  45. All of Randip's tomato tomatoe comments: "the reason we sit on charis is b/c its indian tradition, didn't have them back then blah blah" Isn't a throne a type of chair? Also If u wanna be so modern, let's stop using chaur sahib, maybe Guru Sahib didn't know about fans. let's stop having a takhat, guru ji didn't know about altars let's stop putting up chanani's cause umbrellas are better. let's not matha tek, too old fashioned and makes us look like the fanatical Muslims, instead lets just bow our heads paper and ink is soooo old, let's matha tek to a kindle with downloaded SGGS, then when we take the hukamnama we don't have to wash our hands And have u noticed chairs, pews aren't modern, they were used in europe for many centuaries, and pews aren't modern they were used in churches for a long time So ur just like the pendu's who think anything the gorey's do or use is Modern. All you'll be doing is bringing a western/Christian to the gurudwaras. As for Sikhs in Delhi having chairs, u wrote that Indian Sikhs are more advanced.Well Indian Sikhs r also the ones who go to deray, believe in black magic, follow fake babeys, and mix up their religion with hinduism. And whoever said that Western ppl start the debates, what about the Dasam Granth debate? And Goray are discovering yoga to be more healthy physically and mentally. And chonkri is actually a asan in yoga AK-47: I think the only way to stop the treacle of ppl using chairs from becoming a flood is to become really Modern. And let scientists/engiineers/architects take over: The comment about the disabled sitting in holes got me thinking. What if near all the walls, the floor was lower? So even ifsomebody was sitting in a wheel chair, they wouldn't be any higher than the rest of the sangat. Also the no chair policy should be strenghthened and only wheelchairs should be allowed. The gurudwara should provide wheelchairs that will fit into the depressions made near the walls. Maybe the lower floor can also have tracks for the wheelchair tires. That way even the disabled won't feel embarrased if they are not higher than the rest of the sangat. Also no healthy person will be able to take advantage of this system. And most won't want to: healthy hoke wheelchair te baina, o-v gurudware no bhai" But of course to do this will involve science, math, and lots of money. Not only will the gurudware have to buy some wheelchairs, but also have to get the floor, maybe even foundations redone. But everyone, especially the younger generation shud keep this solution in mind. And if a new gurudwara is being built, try it out. So Randip, this is a TRUE example of PROGRESSIVE, MODERN and PRACTICAL idea. Fateh.
