  1. I have a question though. Ramayana is written by the poet valmiki right? How did he know that all this happened?

  2. Not enough bottles of Famous Grouse in the house? Couldn't quite splash out on the 90-inch TV, so had to settle for the 82-inch one instead? Wanted a BMW i7 but could only afford the iX3?

  3. No the exile of Sikhs from Afghanistan started in the late 90s, I remember that's when I started seeing them appear in bigger numbers in Southall. I also met a few of them who left Afghanistan in the 90s and they said life was terrible under the taliban.

  4. Actually it was kept much before that in Panjab. It was known by a different Panjabi name ("Karue da vart"). The Hindi term "Karvachauth" was popularised through soap operas although the concept of the fast itself existed before that in Panjab. A bunch of other fasts existed in Panjabi society too on punya, masya, etc.

  5. naah tbh i don't know if its due to intergenerational trauma but i have observed that there is alot of violence in a lot of Punjabi homes.

  6. This Karvachauth if I am correct got popularised from Indian Soap operas. I don't think anyone knew what it was. It is completely anthethical to Sikhi. It provides no benefit.

  7. Yes people actually believe in this. It's the same with the "Sikhs" who do murti pooja as well, they actually believe in seeking those devi devte for help. Why they believe in these things IDK really, but to question if it's genuine or not isn't really the right question to be asking.

  8. Eh Fasting doesn't make you more fit, the way to solve that issue is going more towards Sikhi and have gatka and wrestling in gurdwaras.

  9. That's not entirely true, decades ago, it was common knowledge that the Taliban founder/headman Mullah Omar, held SIkhs in very high regard and had given them protected status. It was only after foreign jihadis came in (and Mullah Omar had to hide from US capture/execute parties) that Sikhs started to get seriously abused.

  10. What I started increasingly noticing when I started studying original texts is that there are countless informative, relevant sakhis like those above with a precolonial, internal Sikhi provenance - that the vast majority of our community are oblivious too. Our perception of our true ithihaas seems seriously skewed.

  12. but you do know a lot of people have vitamin D deficiency these days? Many years ago I went to my GP to complain about tiredness and fatigue, but they found nothin in my blood test. Then I went again sometime before the pandemic, this time they looked out for vitamin D and found I had I was deficient. It seems healthcare has become aware of the effect of vitamin D deficiency becoming common in people. To be honest, I haven't completely got my tiredness under control after taking vitamin D for a few years.

  13. I have been taking vitamin D since before the pandemic. I have definitely lost weight, and my hip to waist ratio has decreased. I think my strength has increased as well, when I am picking up weights etc.

  14. A lot of the usual liberals are saying he might have been mentally ill and he should have been handed over to the police. But look at how many people have got away with Beadbi since the Bargari incident. No doubt the RW Hindus will try to demonise us but what happened to this guy will prevent others from trying the same.

  17. You seem to have a very interesting view of dating.. The subtext of what you are saying is that it is somehow inherently bad.. Dating can be as simple as meeting someone to find out if you want to be in relationship get married even.. I'm guessing you're married? If so did you meet your spouse before marriage before making your decision or getting married?

  22. why are you quoting a guy and then complaining about me ? Get it straight I am aware that there is a high level of expectation from women but that is fed from their folks(you can do whatever you like once you get married (wrong)) and bollywood depiction of married life (easy breezy no problems -he's a hero / any problem conflict- he's a loser/cad) and there are plenty of them who are capable of being empathetic towards their husbands if they are given a chance to help out . My brothers were never expected to be supportive so grew up selfish but so did my sister , I'm the one that was the go to for both parents and I still am for both sets of parents . The way I have supported my husband is given him a sounding board for his 'problem solving' and full support when he wanted to change jobs /do things he's interested in like scuba , motorcycling , jujitsu even if it means he's away from home more often because I recognise his need for release of stress, self-expression, alone time . He's gone from employee to self-employed contractor and back even though it put our family income at risk ... all with my backing because I recognised his need to challenge himself . Our kids find it easier to be open with me because the perfectionist in him doesn't allow him to be patient or fully constructive as he cannot step back into 'beginner's mind' but that is something in his personality not necessarily his gender as there are many guys who can e.g. my eldest son . I expect my kids to work things out by themselves with option to ask as many questions as they like once we've ironed out the steps needed to be taken to achieve their goals . I do not agree with those women who sit back and expect everything on a plate despite the hardships their husbands go through , I consider them failures as wives . Why should I consider my husband as a lesser human - he wants to be heard, understood and cared for just like me and really I can see that he and a lot of guys are abandoned to their fates in their teens , which is why I chose NOT to follow the typical haranguing pattern that previous generations use to force my kids on to the conveyor belt .

  23. Other communities have their vices as well. The difference being is that we like to hang our dirty laundry in public, other communities keep things behind closed doors. Our heavy drinking culture has lot in common with the Scots and Irish (there seems to some kind of affinity with celts for some reason) The Ghristi Jeevan life is tough. There is a burden of performance that men have to encounter. No matter how empowered our bibian like to think they are, ultimately they will look to their husbands when the chips are down. There is a hierarchy : children----- mother ------ then father (husband)

  24. The attitude of JKV is precisely why a lot of our men folk will drink themselves to death. I am going ignore JKV's posts because she has nothing of value to add. The relationship between father and son can be a perilous one but it can be a good one. A father-son relationship cannot be the same as mother-son relationship. I was listening to a Joe Rogan podcast with Christine Sommers (she is a psychologist ) and there was research in Australia regarding male counselling. Talking about feelings is a very fem-Centric way to do things, it helps to certain degree with men but not entirely . Men by nature are deductive problem solvers and the way to counsel men has to be done in a problem solving capacity. This how the male psyche works, this is how we are hard wired to operate. I guess if a son has a problem and he asks his father, it has to be done in a particular way. It has to be asked as if it is a problem you need to solve. You may find that father will be more receptive.

  25. from the way both Ranjeet and you put it , it is clear that men are too invested in their image to show 'weakness' to their life partners/families so use their ego's need to justify a pointless and futile dive into the bottle . Is that not the true weakness , to obey one's fear of loki's taane rather than share the burden of their worries with the missus so she can adjust her demands downwards or whatever to ease what she can . Not giving her a chance to help is like saying you're too big to take it ...silly you're in it together, for life .

  26. It is a fact that the Dera and Baba are very popular amongst women but there is valid reason for this. The culture in Punjab is very much in the favour of men and more so amongst the lower social classes. Men go out to work and women pretty much nurture the children and look after the house. Most men whether from higher social classes or lower have one thing in common which is alcohol and substance abuse. When a man goes to work with instructions of bringing groceries on the way home but detours to the theka (liquor store) and blows his day wage on booze and comes home drunk facing questions.... You know the story!... domestic violence and deprived children. No one listens to women or cares in these situations in Punjab and the only people to step in is the Dera and Baba. In the Eighties women used to go to Sant Ji and drag their men in front of the Singhs and this why Sikhi was growing at such a fast rate. The Dera automatically dies when women’s issues are taken care of and financial issues are mostly resolved when one kicks the bottle.

  27. No one is denied entry! The Seva in SGPC controlled Gurdwaras are actual paid jobs not Seva. The way in which you get these jobs is by paying Waddi (bribe donation) acomapnied by recommendation. No different to any job or position in Punjab, so in actual fact SGPC is a Business which operates with the same level of corruption as every other organisation. SGPC controlled Gurdwareh are completely cast free and are open to anyone doing basic Seva but paid Seva (jobs) are acquired with money gifts and recommendation.

  32. Thanks for highlighting this. It's so sad to hear that this is what he thinks. Up to now he has been seen as someone who parodies humorous aspects of Punjabi/Sikh society. His takedown of greedy Gurdwara pardhans was funny and appropriate, I thought. I have criticized people on this board who refer to non-Amritdharis as "Punjabis" and not as Sikhs. I continue to maintain that that are loads of people who have love for our Gurus in their hearts and respect for Guru's rehit and maryada, even though they might not personally follow it. But it seems Jus Reign is not one of them. The turban is a marker of social dignity. It's supposed to mean that you do dignified things. ਮਃ ੫ ॥ ਫਰੀਦਾ ਦੁਨੀ ਵਜਾਈ ਵਜਦੀ ਤੂੰ ਭੀ ਵਜਹਿ ਨਾਲਿ ॥ Fareed, the world dances as it dances, and you dance with it as well. ਸੋਈ ਜੀਉ ਨ ਵਜਦਾ ਜਿਸੁ ਅਲਹੁ ਕਰਦਾ ਸਾਰ ॥੧੧੦॥ That soul alone does not dance with it, who is under the care of the Lord God. ||110|| p1383 He doesn't even have the respect to say Guru Nanak when talking about Guru Nanak Dev ji? Just "nanak", not even capitalized? What a loser. Oh, by the way, Guru Nanak Dev ji did create an organized religion, during their own lifetime. Sikhs did not "turn it into a religion", <banned word filter activated> (aimed at Jus Reign). Does he know that Guru Sahib created Kartarpur Sahib and instituted the basic maryada followed today by Sikhs (Asa di Vaar, Japji, kirtan, etc.)? For example, Bhai Gurdas ji writes in // 1, Pauri 38, about the maryada at Kartarpur: ਸੋਦਰ ਆਰਤੀ ਗਾਵੀਐ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਵੇਲੇ ਜਾਪ ਉਚਾਰਾ॥ Sodhar Arathee Gaveeai Anmrith Vaelae Jap Ouchara|| Sodar and Arati were sung and in the ambrosial hours Japu was recited. Hmm, that sounds "organized" to me. I would like to ask Jus Reign if he's ever been to or watched on TV an "organized" sporting event, a music concert, opera, play? It's OK for all this stuff to be "organized", just not religion? There's something that happens when somebody starts thinking too much of themselves: they start to think too little of the Guru. I hope he can get back to funny man, not a criticizer of Guru Nanak ji and his panth.
