  8. Aam Aadmi Party Gains Support from Sikhs BY SIKH24 EDITORS / IN PUNJAB, WORLD / JANUARY 11, 2014 SHARE 2 Karnail Singh Peer Mohammad (left) and Advocate H.S. Phoolka Karnail Singh Peer Mohammad (left) and Advocate H.S. Phoolka CHANDIGARH, Punjab (January 11, 2014)—Self styled president of All India Sikh Students Federation, Bhai Karnail Singh Peer Mohammad and renowned Sikh lawyer H.S. Phoolka, a senior advocate of Indian apex court, have decided to join the Aam Admi Party (AAP). As per a statement made by both Sikhs, they were joining Aam Aadmi Party with ambition of saving the country from corruption and morality downfall. They also said that they would fill the membership form of AAP after performing Ardass at Sri Harmandar Sahib, Sri Amritsar. It is notable that Advocate Phoolka has been struggling for seeking justice for victims of the Sikh Genocide of 1984 on the legal front but he is known as an Indian nationalist, whereas Karnail Singh Peer Mohammad is a self styled president of AISSF. However, later has participated in 1984 justice campaigns with the collaboration of US based Sikh advocacy group Sikhs for Justice. Although not a Sikh, DGP Shashi Kant who has supported Sikh causes in past has also expressed desire of joining the Aam Aadmi Party. DGP Shashi Kant came into the news recently for supporting the cause of Bhai Gurbaksh Singh Khalsa. His role was well appreciated in release of the four Sikhs. He recently blamed the Punjab Police for trying to abduct him from his home in Chandigarh.
  9. http://www.ndtv.com/article/india/former-punjab-dgp-shashi-kant-claims-abduction-bid-joins-aap-469614 Former Punjab DGP Shashi Kant claims abduction bid; joins AAP All India | Press Trust of India | Updated: January 10, 2014 23:54 IST Chandigarh: Former Punjab DGP Shashi Kant claimed that some policemen tried to abduct him this morning when he was going to the Aam Aadmi Party's office in Fatehgarh Sahib to join the outfit. Later in the day, the former Director General of Police (Prison) joined AAP at his residence in the presence of senior leaders of the outfit. Mr Kant alleged that some police personnel in civil uniforms made an unsuccessful attempt to abduct him when he came out of his residence in Sector 18 of the city this morning for being vocal against drug rackets in the state. He said he immediately called the Police Control Room (PCR), after which personnel from Chandigarh police rushed to the spot and rounded up at least five persons. The former DGP (Prison) alleged that he was continuously being "pressurised" by Punjab police after he had been vocal about drug nexus in the state. He alleged that politicians from major political parties, including Akali Dal and Congress, in the state and certain senior policemen were "patronising" drug mafias. Mr Kant late this evening joined the AAP in the presence of senior leaders of the newly-floated party. Meanwhile, Chandigarh Police looked into the matter and found that four members of an unarmed investigation team had gone to Sector 18 area in connection with an ongoing investigation pertaining to Mohali district. "They were duly examined by Chandigarh Police and it was concluded that there was no 'kidnapping plan' of any kind whatsoever as apprehended by Shashi Kant," a police officer said. However, the complaint submitted by Mr Kant was dismissed as the accusations in it were unfounded, the officer said. Speaking on the matter, Chandigarh SSP Sukhchan Singh Gill said Mr Kant's complaint had been found to be wrong. Two senior police officers visited Mr Kant at his residence and reminded him that he had been provided with two PSOs from Punjab Security Wing. They told the former DGP, if he has any such apprehensions in future, he or his PSOs should contact the Security Wing, police sources said. Meanwhile, Punjab Congress Chief Partap Singh Bajwa condemned the alleged attempt by police personnel to abduct Mr Kant. In a statement, he said the incident was "shocking and uncalled for". He alleged that ruling SAD leaders were frightened after the name of Mr Majithia had came to the fore in the synthetic drug racket. Mr Bajwa said Congress had taken up the issue of drugs in Punjab and started a state-wide agitation demanding a CBI inquiry into the drug racket. He said Mr Kant had also prepared a list of political leaders and police officers who are running drug mafia in Punjab. "He (Kant) had feared threat to his life from the ruling party," Mr Bajwa said. The Congress leader said Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal, who holds the home portfolio, owed an explanation on the issue of kidnapping attempt of Mr Kant. He said this incident had endorsed the stand of Congress that Punjab police could not probe the drug racket, being under the influence of the ruling SAD-BJP government.

AAP spokesperson and working committee member Sanjay Singh, who was here to attend a workers' meet of the party, along with senior human rights advocate H S Phoolka, said that drugs would be a major issue for the party during parliamentary polls in Punjab, along with farmer suicides and national problems like corruption and inflation. The party has also favoured a judicial probe or a court-monitored investigation into the synthetic drug racket case in which druglord Jagdish Singh Bhola has named Punjab cabinet minister Bikram Singh Majithia. Sanjay said as investigations by Punjab police would have zero credibility with the DGP already giving a clean chit to Majithia, only a judicial probe could be fair or else, the court should monitor the proceedings. He further stated that CBI had proved its inefficiency in several high profile cases. Responding to a query, he said that while his party would contest all 13 Lok Sabha seats, there would not be any alliance. However, he revealed that talks with some groups in Punjab were on but nothing has been finalized. When pointed out that leaders from other parties were also mulling to join AAP, Sanjay Singh said that before the entry of any leader from other parties, three Cs -- corruption, criminal record and character - would be checked and there would not be any compromise on the criteria. Meanwhile, a workers meeting in Desh Bhagat Yaadgaar hall, which was packed to capacity, clearly reflected that the win in Delhi, where unknown faces defeated influential candidates, was being quoted by party leaders to mobilize workers, who also appeared to be brimming with enthusiasm. Addressing the gathering, Sanjay Singh said that the SAD-BJP government was trying to muzzle dissenting voices in the state. "We challenge Badal government to throw us into jail as it has been doing with agitators. We shall organize a major opposition to the state government and would sweep all the 13 seats in LS polls," he said.
  11. We all know how Congress and BJP are 2 faces of the same coin as far as Sikhs are concerned. While Congress openly butchered Sikhs in peri-1984 era, BJP is clearly known for its anti-Sikh policies. A new political party called AAP ( Aam Admi Party) has sprung in India. It actually formed government in Delhi state just a while ago. AAP seems to be focusing a lot on providing an honest and clean governance with a lot of emphasis on removing corruption. As far as Sikhs are concerned, it seems to be a much better alternative to Congress or BJP. Here's a few things which I think we should consider if we ( as Sikhs) were to support this party on a national level 1) This is the only party which openly supported the recent Bhai Gurbaksh Singh's movement. 2) AAP says both BJP and Congress are communal. It openly voices to bring corrupt BJP and Congress politicians to justice. 3) Senior lawyer HS Phoolka ( who has tirelessly & selflessly worked for the 1984 Carnage victims) recently joined AAP 3) A lot of liberal and intellectuals are joining AAP 4) Hindu terrorists attacked AAP's office as one of its senior members said there should be referendum for army presence in Kashmir, shows the fact that this party is anti-Hindtva 5) AAP joined in sooner than any other party when Nirpreet Kaur sat on hunger strike for 1984 victims 6) AAP mentioned in its manifesto to provide justice to victims of 1984 genocide 7) AAP has a Sikh cell within the party. 8) Arvind Kejriwal ( leader of AAP) visited Gurdwara Bangla Sahib without any security within days of becoming chief minister of Delhi on occasion of Guru Gobind Singh Ji's Gurpurab. The question would be given the fact that Sikhs absolutely do not have any political voice in India ( assuming we all agree that Badals are rather anti-Sikh), would it be worthwhile for SIkhs to support AAP ? We need to align ourselves with a national party in India & by aligning with BJP, the Badals have ruined a lot of our prospects. Congress and BJP have done their best to malign Sikhs at all levels. Should Sikhs align with AAP early only ( while it is still in its infancy)?
  12. Thats good news. Just yesterday though, Hindu terrorists attacked AAP's office.
  13. They have also repeatedly mentioned that both Congress and BJP are communal and anti-minority Besides, they extended support and sat on fast when Nirpreet Kaur sat on hunger strike in response to anti Sikh 1984 genocide. They have put in their manifesto to provide justice to SIkhs for acts of Congress in 1984. I think this party may be the best party to vote for out of the options available to SIkhs in India at this time. One of their senior members ( Prashant Bhushan) had mentioned about that Kashmir should have plebiscite for its independence. These are progressive and honest views, unlike BJp & Congress.

Aam party requested Punjab Government to approve the demand of Bhai Gurbaksh Singh as early as possible entitling the release of Sikhs who have already completed their imprisonment sentence. Members of the party said that the purpose of establishing the party is to fight corruption and to fulfill the demands of common people. When the party saw that Bhai Gurbaksh Singh is fighting for the society and not for his self interest, we are supporting him. They said that, the movement is getting support not just nationally, but also internationally. He felt grief that apart from ” Dailyspokesman” and few other newspapers, all the Punjab media has maintained distance from Bhai Gurbaksh Singh. They said that we request all the media to support Bhai Gurbaksh Singh Ji.

  17. Gap slams racist graffiti after ad featuring Sikh jewelry designer Waris Ahluwalia is vandalized with anti-Muslim slurs By MISTY WHITE SIDELL PUBLISHED: 09:24 EST, 26 November 2013 | UPDATED: 10:01 EST, 26 November 2013 GAP has been forced to defend its holiday campaign after anti-Muslim graffiti appeared scribbled on one of its advertisements posted in New York City’s subway system. The subject of the racist graffiti is Waris Ahluwalia- a jewelry designer and actor who is Sikh, not Muslim. For GAP’s holiday campaign – the theme of which is ‘make love’ – Ahluwalia, 39, poses with model and filmmaker Quentin Jones. But where the advertisement reads ‘make love’, one unknown New York vandal has crossed out ‘love’ and written in ‘bombs!’ below. Islamaphobia: Anti-Muslim graffiti was found blanketing a GAP ad featuring the Sikh jewelry designer and actor Waris Ahluwalia on a New York City subway platform The original: GAP's 'Make Love' campaign features Ahluwalia alongside filmmaker and model Quentin Jones The graffiti also includes a line that reads, ‘Stop driving taxis!’ The vandalized ad was originally found and captured by New York photographer Robert Gerhardt on the downtown platform of the Buhre Avenue 6 train stop in the Pelham Bay section of the Bronx. More...The most famous jeweler you've never heard of: Meet the needlepoint designer-turned gem artist being hailed 'the Fabergé of our time' Where are those Victoria's Secret curves? How Angels off the runway are rather less buxom than you think Gerhardt forwarded the images to Muslim journalist and commentator Arsalan Iftikhar who quickly shared it with his near-40,000 cumulative followers on Twitter and Facebook. Iftikhar told MailOnline that the photo made him want ‘the world to see how brown people are viewed in America today.’ Gerhardt's image received a wave of responses, many of which expressed outrage over the graffiti. ‘[This] makes me very very sad. The world is becoming more hateful,’ responded one Twitter follower. ‘Sadly typical,’ replied another. Iftikhar’s multiple Twitter dispatches were also re-tweeted by influential Muslim author and commentator Reza Aslan to more than 54,000 of Aslan’s own followers – helping draw more attention to the misinformed graffiti. Signature style: Ahluwalia has been named to multiple best dressed lists for his signature look which includes a black turban, long beard, and fitted suit Gap even responded to Iftikhar’s tweets to inquire where the graffiti was located. Representatives for the brand tell MailOnline that they are now ‘working to replace the image [in the Bronx].’ They also issued a statement that says: ‘Gap is a brand that celebrates inclusion and diversity. Our customers and employees are of many different ethnicities, faiths, and lifestyles and we support them all.’ When Gap’s ‘Make Love’ holiday campaign debuted earlier this month, the brand received an outpouring of positive responses on its Facebook page from members of the Sikh community. Iftikhar feels that ‘This whole story just proves that we do not live in a post-racial America yet when South Asians and those perceived to be Muslims cannot even grace fashion advertisements without racial epithets being directed their way.’ Film actor: In addition to his jewelry line House of Waris, Ahluwalia is also an actor and has appeared in multiple films directed by his friend Wes Anderson, including The Darjeeling Limited (above), in which he was featured alongside Owen Wilson, Adrien Brody, and Jason Schwartzman Ahluwalia is a well-known face in fashion circles. He designs the celestial jewelry label House of Waris, which earned him a prestigious CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund nomination in 2009, as well as an official membership with the CFDA. Most ironically, in this case, designer has been named on multiple best-dressed lists by the likes of Vanity Fair and British GQ for his original style which typically takes on the uniform of a black turban, a long beard, and an impeccably-fitted suit. Ahluwalia is also a muse for the film director Wes Anderson, who has cast him in movies including The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou and The Darjeeling Limited. He is just one of the subjects in GAP’s ‘Make Love’ holiday campaign, which also stars Cyndi Lauper, and Tony Bennet.
