(John Moore/Getty Images) Initially, the announcement that the TSA was permitting airline passengers to carry small bats onto the plane made me very excited. “Bats on a plane!” I shrieked. “Get Samuel L. Jackson some leathery wings.” But then I discovered that they meant the other kind of bats — under a certain weight and up to a certain length, of course. Wiffle bats are mildly exciting, but they’re no winged bloodsuckers. On Wednesday, the list of things that are considered threats grew even more oddly specific. You can carry a knife on board, so long as it isn’t a dangerous, stabby knife. CNN reports:“Knives with blades that are 2.36 inches (6 centimeters) or shorter and less than a 1/2 inch wide will be permitted on U.S. airline flights as long as the blade is not fixed or does not lock into place. Razor blades and box cutters are still not permitted.” And no large bottles of shampoo! Nope. We can all agree that 2.36 inches of blade pose no significant threat, but if anyone makes it to her destination with enough Pantene to last more than two days — well, that would be letting the terrorists win. Flight attendants are ticked about the move. They may well have a point — especially during the sequester, when lines are promised to mushroom into terrifying sprawls of wretched, red-eyed, unkempt travelers, expanding people’s access to sharp objects may not be the best plan. Tiffany Hawk, the author of “Love Me Anyway,” a forthcoming novel “about two young flight attendants coming of age at 35,000 feet,” and a former flight attendant herself, notes that, “We need faster and easier checkpoints, but instead of coming up with a novel approach, the TSA wants to go backward. Allowing such weapons just doesn’t make sense. Unless, of course, you believe the only thing that will stop a bad guy with a billiards cue is a good guy with a Wiffle ball bat.” I cannot argue with the idea that what we need is faster and easier checkpoints. But that’s exactly what we ain’t going to get. We are still permitted to bring onboard with us many more threatening things. Crying babies, for instance. And airplane food! And hack comics making jokes about babies and airplane food! I would much rather sit next to someone with more than two pool cues. But honestly, contemplate this ban a moment. “Damn and blast!” some terrorist is saying right now. “How did they know that we were using 2.37-inch blades? We have to abort.” “I needed at least three golf clubs,” his colleague adds. “Two just won’t cut it.” “My bat exceeds the weight guidelines,” one of his colleagues murmurs. “How do they know? They’re always so many steps ahead of us!” “We could try something with comically oversized, inflatable bats,” someone says, hopelessly. “Or Wiffle bats!” “Don’t be ridiculous,” everyone hushes him. “Hey, they considered those threats for years,” he points out. “Maybe they saw something we didn’t.” “Or the hip plates of the elderly?” someone else pipes up. “Those seemed risky to them, too. Or, heck, 4-year-olds. In general. They even frisked one. Clearly, we need to dig deeper.” The minor ridiculousness of this change pales in comparison to the absurdity of the system as a whole. This is the sort of oddly specific parsing that ensues when you take the least nuanced approach possible. Talk to people? No. Just have them take off their shoes. Currently, our airport security system does a wonderful job protecting us against whatever has just happened. And forcing us to buy travel-size shampoos. Actually, as a scheme to encourage the travel-size shampoo industry, it is an unmitigated success. If nothing else, it’s been a great way to experience exactly what 3 ounces of liquid is! Just loosening the bans on items that everyone agrees are absurdly innocuous doesn’t necessarily mean we’re moving toward a more sensible policy, though. That seems unlikely. The emphasis is still on the things you carry, not how you carry them. CNN reported: “TSA spokesman David Castelveter said the changes announced Tuesday will not slow down the screening process by requiring screeners to measure knife blades and weigh plastic bats. Screeners will use ‘common sense’ when applying the rule, he said.” Given that the last time screeners were asked to use common sense when applying a rule, they were frisking old men with plates in their hips and 4-year-olds, I cannot say that I am overly optimistic. But you never know. Perhaps I am unduly pessimistic, and this is the beginning of an evolution towards a wiser, more nuanced approach! At this rate, we’ll actually have sensible limits on carry-ons by, oh, 2035 or so.
  3. I agree Mehtab singh's points are too idealistic and follow too much logic, the 2 things unheard of in the indian politics and law. Although I feel they will defer Rajoana's death penalty as the recent protests were too global and recent. Also the Hindu majority right now is way more anti-muslim than anti-SIkh. When a muslim is hanged by the sarkar, that pleases Hindus way more than when a Sikh is hanged( in terms of vote-bank politics). Congress just didnt want BJP to make not hanging of Afsal guru a political agenda.
  4. Mehtab Singh Ji, I think Modi would never go after those Congress politicians who committed the Sikh genocide. The reason, he knows if he does so, he will get the same treatment when Congress will return to power. Do you ever wonder that while both Congress and BJP do so much mud slinging on the issues of anti sikh and anti muslim carnage, they hardly ever go about prosecuting the other while they are in power. The truth is that a) both parties are hand in hand ideologically and want India to be a Hindu country, b) want to escape from being prosecuted for the minorities' carnages Honeslty, I dont see Modi becoming PM of India in the near future because a) There's enough split within BJP about Modi b) There's going to be enough divide within NDA about Modi c) He has issues about US visa which may be a major embarrassment. Imagine he becomes a PM and he's denied a US visa still. d) Lot of people view him as a murderer first , a charismatic leader later. Hitler, Indira Gandhi were charismatic leaders too, but were murderers as well. e) Modi rose to quick fame by getting his hands red with innocent muslims' blood. This fame is short lived. He could have just rose to fame with his development plank. I dont see him becoming the PM. If he does, God save India. Also remember, the most recent government sponsored Sikh Massacre occurred in BJP's regime, the 2002 Chittisinghpoora massacre where 35 Sikhs were killed by Indian army in cold blood, even Bill Clinton mentioned clearly in his book about this.
  5. Honestly, I feel Bir Khalsa has gone too far. Most of the time at the end of the show, one of their member is injured. They might not be aware of the long terms effects of high velocity blunt trauma. The people are only left scared at the end. Especially the cultures who dont know who Sikhs are, this is not really a way to introduce Sikhism to them.
  6. I feel 3HO has taken this too far now. Dancing to Banee is never appropriate. Heads uncovered & dancing to Gurbani. Gurbani is not any other song, How does this look different than a Hindu Jagrata. I feel its too much hippization/hinduisation of Sikhi. Most people here are dancing to music. Why cant they dance to any other song.? I guess Akal Takth needs to take a notice and issue some guidelines to 3HO. We complaining here doesnt help much. Time and again, 3HO continues to do it despite getting this feedback.
  7. I agree with you Mehtab veerji. I guess this is really a difficult situation for everybody. Seems like everybody is correct. Somebody somewhere will have to make a compromise.
  8. If you love her truly and you said you anyways follow Sikhism, then become a true Sikh. Whats stopping you? I think her dad wont have issues if you show him your true love for his daughter as well as Sikhism.
  9. I dont know why people try to act so "wise" by criticizing what they dislike. Thats a big problem in our community. Honestly, I was drawn to the Kirtan because of AKJ style years ago.. I still find AKJ kirtanis much more immersed inot the kirtan than many of the "professional kirtanees" Anyway, the original poster should be congratulated and encouraged for whatever way he likes to do Kirtan in. I guess its not a thread for spewing your own likes and dislikes.
  10. Interestingly his comments about sant bhindrawale :- Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwala is a great human being who sacrificed his life following the Sikh legacy of sacrificing life for a bigger cause,” he added. From Punjab news line By Sukhpal Kaur AMRITSAR: Yoga guru Ramdev has sparked another controversy announcing support to the Bluestar memorial. Congress Legislature Party leader Sunil Jakhar condemning Baba’s stand said, by supporting such memorials, Ramdev is supporting the radicals and vitiating the integrity of the country. Ramdev who was on a visit to Darbar Sahib, Amritsar is trying to garner suppoty for his anti-corruption campaign and black money stashed abroad. “Those who lost their lives for the cause of ‘religion’ during Operation Bluestar are martyrs. Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwala is a great human being who sacrificed his life following the Sikh legacy of sacrificing life for a bigger cause,” he added. Welcoming the decision of SGPC to set up the martyrs memorial, Ramdev said, every community has the right to build memorials for those who have dedicated and sacrificed their life for the cause of religion. “The political parties should not involve themselves issuing such statements against the martyrs’ memorial hurting the sentiments of the Sikh community,” he further added. Meeting after Damdami Taksal chief Harnam Singh Dhumma, Ramdev said, “I have visited the site, it is a memorial. It will be an inspiration to the forthcoming generations.” Talking about 1984 carnage, he said, “ It is a big blot on the country. Congress unleashed a reign of terror against the Sikh community and to hide this hideous act of theirs, the party appointed a Sikh prime minister who is a weak man. I am astonished that even a Sikh PM has not been able toget justice for the community notwithstanding the fact that in 2002 Gujarat witnessed anti-Muslim riots, and missionary nuns were raped in Orissa have not been denied justice.” Lashing out at the Pranab Mukherjee , the Yoga guru said, “ The black money stashed abroad which belongs to 121 crore Indians could not have happened without permission of the finance minister. Selecting Pranab as presidential candidate, Congress has rubbed salt on the wounds of Indian masses.” “ The government is not serious to bring back the black money and the investigation agencies, such as CBI, CAG, all dance to the tunes of the government. We are having the support of 400 MPs. We will launch andolan from August 9 at the Ram Lila maidan.” Meanwhile, Harnam Singh promised to give his support to Ramdev for the August 9 andolan. Others present on the occasion were Bhai Harnam Singh, Bhai Jarnail Singh, Bhai Palwinder Singh, Bhai Gurpeet Singh, Daljeet Singh etc. Ramdev also paid obeisance at Akal Takht.
  11. I love & respect white sikhs a lot but this disheartens me too much, they should be told clearly about the rehat maryada( code of conduct) whilst any baani is recited. This looks more like a Hindu Jagran, clapping, dancing ,bare headed. They should know the rehat maryada before they do these sort of events. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mBW5GDpwhvg
  12. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SuveIh7W0II&feature=related This one is in HD
  13. Hand them over the link of the video and tell them to watch the video as a human and not as a PM or President of India
  14. Talk about the removal of Sumedh Saini from DGP of Punjab, he is tainted police officer with number of cases against him including some serious human rights violations
  15. This is very serious and we must not let it go, Sumedh Saini is at helm, these things should be highlighted as much as possible
  16. Well known killers of innocent Sikh men – the Punjab DGP Sumedh Singh Saini and the evil-personified former DGP KPS Gill at the state police headquarters in Chandigarh on Tuesday. A petition has been filed in public interest for removal of Saini from the post of Punjab Director-General of Police. The petition against the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, Punjab Home Department, Sumedh Singh Saini and the CBI, has been filed by Voice for Freedom through its director Simranjit Singh. A resident of Mohali and a lawyer at the High Court here, Simranjit Singh is seeking directions for quashing Saini’s appointment as DGP on the grounds that it is in violation of the Supreme Court directions and against the spirit of the Punjab Police Act. The petitioner has referred to the recent decision of the Karnataka High Court, setting aside the appointment of the state DGP. This must be highlighted and supported as much as possible so that the murderer is removed from the position
  17. Can Sikhs outside Britain support Sikh Channel?
  18. Remember that Badal is pro Shiv Sena and anti-Sikh. That's why Gursikh boys were killed and Shiv Sainiks were not even injured. And guess who's the DGP-Sumedh Saini........its obvious who's blood is he after. Its only if Singhs take matter in their own hands that we can try to get rid of SS, but remember we will have lot more casualties and loss because of above mentioned reasons.
  19. I think it was terror tactic to silence the Sikh Channel. It's commonly used in India. Few years ago, Tehelka which was a big news organisation exposed corrupt BJP leaders, majority of its employees were harassed by the BJP govt, as a result, most of the employees left the organisation and it became a small & virtually non existent organisation. But since Sikh Channel is UK based, they should lodge complaints with appropriate UK authorities so that the Indian Govt terror tactics can be exposed as much as possible. Also, they should try to highlight it in western media. Now is the time!
  20. Is this true? Didnt see anything on SikhChannel though? If its true, this should be highlighted as much as possible in western media because everybody will understand censorship of media.
  21. An excellent article written by a non-sikh in mainstream media, we must thank the author, not many non sikhs have the intellect to pen it
