I don't disagree but what about Bhagat Farid Ji. He was born nearly 200 years before Guru Nanak Dev Ji. Also a couple more Bhagats had died before Guru Nanak.

With regards to Bhagat Farid Ji, Guru Nanak Maharaj met Sheikh Brahm. "Farid" is the gadhi of the saints. Sheikh Brahm was the 4th Farid from the one who you are referring to.

Interesting side note: Sant Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj Kaleran Wale said that they were Sheikh Brahm in a previous life.

What's the significance of 108 beads in a mala? I ask because it is not the first time I've heard that number come up before.

There are many various significances, depending on the tradition:

    - the 108 pressure points of the body

    - the 108 evils

    etc.

Another tradition is that the jaap is done with the intention of doing 100, but 8 extra are there just incase of any jaap skipped or missed.

One interesting thing I read in Anand Chamatkar (biography of Sant Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj Kaleran Wale, written by Bhai Gurmukh Singh Ji, Hazoori Raagi of Baba Ji for 12 years) that Baba Ji used to say about this:

    - there is no "ginntee" (count/number) before 1 and no ginntee after 100. So you take these two and add them, and you get 101. Next, it is the duty of the Sikh/Mureed that he should always regard the hukam of his Guru/Murshad as "Sat" (as true, but sat also means 7). Add this 7 to the 101, and you get 108.

  3. Wonderful replies here by the sangat ??.

A small point to note; if you walk side by side, one of you will stand closer to the Guru and have to walk a slightly shorter distance, while the other will have to stand a little further away from the Guru and walk a slightly longer distance. Who will it be? And how do you decide who gets to stand closer to the Guru?

This is what happens when you start splitting hairs. As sangat have mentioned, if you don't like the Anand Karaj, you are more than welcome to get "married" in any other way you see fit...

  4. Sant Baba Nand Singh Ji Maharaj Kaleran Wale (Nanaksar) used to say that kirtan should be done in raag, as that is how the Baani came. If you are unable to sing raag, then do kirtan in straightforward "dhaarnaa" (as Sant Isher Singh Ji Rarewale, Sant Attar Singh Ji Mastuanawale did). But one should never do kirtan in these filmy/vikaari tunes. (This is from Anand Chamatkar, written by Bhai Gurmukh Singh Ji).

Unfortunately, this is exactly what is happening these days. Certain jathas/kirtanis do this. No use/understanding of traditional instruments either. No wonder the youth are losing touch with kirtan...

    Yes, only for UK. :(

we have been looking for quite some time but cannot find a decent Amritdhari, nitnemi who is well educated. Such a shame that our community does not have Amritdhari men who are educated anymore.

Are you based and looking in the UK? If so, there are loads of educated Amritdharis (and sehajdharis mind you), especially around London (definitely) and Midlands (I think). I guess it would also depend on the rest of your criteria...
