  1. Years ago, between 2001 - 2005 ish we at Sikhsangat played this as a game to see if we could list all things that come in 5. The topic went on for a while. I will try to find it and post the link here
  2. Fateh, Does anyone here watch the Derby Live in the morning? There was this katha vicharak doing katha this morning inside the Derby Guru Arjan Dev ji's Gurdwara and I could see the sikh channel logo on the back wall of the Gurdwara . Sikh Channel covers a lot of programmes from this Gurdwara however I don't think any channel or business should be advertising inside any GuruGhar's. Committees should not have favourites as everyone should be treated equally inside the gurdwara sahib. What are your thoughts? Did anyone pick up on this? Balait.
  3. Time to find a new Sant? :biggrin2:
  4. sis, we at Sikhsangat.com are thinking about doing a project in Punjab like we used to in the sikhgiving days. You can certainly help with that when we have all the details.
  5. Here is a type of shabad you asked for. Just as millions of sparks are created from the fire; although they are different entities, they merge in the same fire. Just as from of waves are created on the surface of the big rivers and all the waves are called water. Similarly the animate and inanimate objects come out of the Supreme Lord; having been created from the same Lord, they merge in the same Lord. 17.87.
  6. I have been meaning to reply to this topic for days but have been too busy. Being the only brother to 3 sisters, I will try to provide you a brother's perspective. As individuals, when it comes to family, we would rather suffer hardship than make our family members part of the process. For this reason, a lot of people do not tell family members things which will cause them emotional pain. If I was in your brother's position, I would have done the same because if you or your parents were made to be a part of the decision making process them you would have either done one of the following: Not allowed him to go through with the decision Allowed him to go through with the decision either way, you and your parents would have suffered as a result of the decision because eventually you would have blamed your self for making him suffer (decision 1) or blamed your self for his death by saying "Maybe if we had just waited few more months etc" (decision 2). Finally, I believe that your brother was old enough to make his own decision and you guys should respect that and leave it at that. It is natural to think the way you are, I just hope that you guys do understand that his wife's involvement in the decision making process is what doctors always ask for and I hope your relationship with his wife has not suffered as a consequence. I hope guru ji gives you and your family the strength to get through this difficult period. As S1ngh suggested path (gurbani) is the most beneficial thing for your family and your brother.
  7. I wore patka in high school because I had come from India and had to adjust to a life where everyone was speaking a different language. On top of it all, I decided not change my appearance by wearing a dastar as it would have created more problems. So when I started college, I wore a dastar there. Anyways, dastars can look silly too, some people just dont know how to tie them. Now that I am grown up, I find that "What If's" are the worst. What if i had done that, what if i hadnt done that. Looking back, I think, I should have worn a dastar. High school kids have short attention span. They might make fun of your changed appearance for a day or two but then they will find something else to concentrate on. So I say go for it but as far as wearing the dastar is concerned, Experiment. Find the style suitable to you and one that you find comfortable. I have been wearing a dastar for 12 years now and my style changes every year. No two days to work are the same, I keep it same colour though. I am still trying to find the perfect cloth and style even after 12 years of dastar tying. Good luck.
  8. Personally, I have seen many moneh become keshdhari after years of reading gurbani. In my opinion this would not have been possible if they were restricted from guru ji.
  9. IT is a good area which allows the flexibility of working from home. For the past two years I worked from home (4 days from home, 1 day in the office). It is good to begin with but in the long run its not good. You miss the human contact and get a bit lazy too. However, working from home does give you a lot of flexibility. I was free to goto the gym classes that I wanted to go to, go to town etc. I am no longer working from home simply because office enviornment teaches you things which are not always possible working from home. When I am in the office now and have technical discussions with colleagues, I learn a lot more compared to being at home and doing the same things I have always done.
  10. You are not alone in your thinking. I found the viewing quite uncomfortable especially the throwing of chocolate.
  11. I think the message of S1ngh's post is avoid MOH (attachment). This Shabad is by Guru Angad Dev Ji in Raag Raamkalee on Pannaa 955 slok mÚ 2 ] salok ma 2 || Salok, Second Mehla: nwnk icMqw miq krhu icMqw iqs hI hyie ] naanak chi(n)thaa math karahu chi(n)thaa this hee haee || O Nanak, don't be anxious; the Lord will take care of you. jl mih jMq aupwieAnu iqnw iB rojI dyie ] jal mehi ja(n)th oupaaeian thinaa bh rojee dhaee || He created the creatures in water, and He gives them their nourishment. 14. Desis and their roumors. It wasnt about landing, how can they make a plane stay up in the air forever? Full stories.... http://news.sky.com/...rticle/16112518 And yes the airline is run by a desi too. Bhupender kandra.
  15. hmmm, i must be getting old. I thought this topic was in the admin section, that is why I replied.
  16. Coming from a family with granthis and having known a lot of granthis, let me tell you guys their side of the story. Its not easy being a granthi. People dont respect them at all. They think because they give money to granthis, these men and their families are less than them. Kids of granthis get called giani and often grow up hating the profession. Yes its a profession/job now. It might not have been in Guru ji's days but a lot of religious work was voluntary then. But the granthis and raggis still got rewards from Guru jis. Anyways, so its even worse when you are from India. People and committee members are always ready to use this against you. I know a 33 year old granthis who was "ASKED" by a committee member to clean up her garden. He worked all day and didnt get a single penny. If as a granthi you forget to read one person's name in the ardasas or misread it then the family is all over you. Committees run gurdwaras like a business. Lets talk about salary. Granthis, in UK dont get paid much. The weekly salary of the granthi usually is very low, even then they take the charawa from the granthi if he does kirtan. I have seen committee members change the kirtan schedule so that granthi will do kirtan at the end and people who will give the money back to the gurdwara or committee do the kirtan first. So that when the granthi does kirtan, no one is left to give any money. Some gurdwaras even tell people not to give any ardas. The above is just very few examples of things I have seen. With this kind of attitude toward our granthis, its no surprise that they do not put much effort into their job and just go through the motions. I fully support the above granthi who won the case. Its about time committees started treating guru ghar de sevak with respect they deserve.
  17. Good stuff, with discussing politics in the gurdwara. Though I would stay away from things like Girls not going for sikh guys or people's lack of interest in sikhi etc. What I am trying to say is dont preach just yet. For the first few months get people listening to you and on your side and then you can start discussing other topics. You dont want to sound like a katha vicharak from the get go. Topics to discuss: Issues faced by sikhs at airport, workplace etc lack of unity among Sikhs thanks to inter-Jathebandi competitions (Yes its copied from mehtab) Ekta between Sangat and Commitee etc
  18. Hazoor, I was thinking the same thing. Whilst, we cannot do what our Guru jis did but Guru Nanak dev ji had bani written on their chola as well. I dont think gurbani should be printed on clothing but I do think, sikh symbols can be e,g, Khanda and the word khalsa etc.
  19. Some good designs there, would have bought few but I do not like their site url on the shoulder. I mean, I am paying for the tshirt, not getting it free so dont want to be advertising anything. You dont see NEXT etc putting their brands on the tshirts. For that reason I wont buy . Example As for if it is beadbi, people have Khandas etc on dastars. Never heard anyone say that its wrong. So why not on tshirt. I think Sikh Symbols on upper body clothing are fine.
  20. duplicate http://www.sikhsangat.com/Index.php?/topic/63431-biggest-pakhandi-on-video-caught
  21. I dont have your phone or a smart phone as dont really use the phone much. I do however have motorola xoom tablet and it has android os. When I got the tablet it would go in standby mode every few minutes even if a video was playing. Under settings I had to change the time it takes before it goes into standby. Maybe your phone has simmilar setting. Best to ask the question on the manufacturer's support forum or contact a local phone store.
  22. I think majority of the books available online violate the copyright laws. It all depends on the book author and distributors if they want to go after individuals. In case of Indian authors and distributors I am not aware of any cases.
  23. If you clear your browser cache and cookies then hopefully it will work. It might be still caching the old skins etc.
  24. Each bank account in UK is protected for the first 50,000 GBP. I think this applies to account in various banks. So two accounts at HSBC and Barclays would be protected for 100k (50k each).
