  1. Is there a contact number of the organising committee or someone? We (my local Singhs and I) want to do langar di seva for this year's Rally and were wondering who we need to contact?
  2. This guy needs to change his name as he is no longer Azad. hahahaa
  3. Will it be available on TV in USA and will Sikh Channel have a studio there? I think it makes sense to share resources and programming and Sikh Channel would get funds from American Sikhs as well. However, are they ready to broadcast in USA as an american tv station given the fact that they are always saying that they need funds in UK?
  4. Hmm, I think it is either a tshirt or the head scarf thing (that gurdwaras hand out to mone) with a khanda on and since the guys are naked, the wearer of the tshirt is using the tshirt to hide his modesty. It is stupid and ignorant especially if he comes from a sikh background.
  5. Fateh All, I have been eating sensibly except last sunday when I attended Manchester Nagar Kirtan and pigged out on the chana, bhatoores. I have started eating rotiyan again but I eat only 2 at 6pm. Max roti intake per day is about three. My exercising regime has been good. Had a tough personal training session yesterday and I have a circuits class tonight. Weight wise, I see the weight going down slowly. I have avoided weighing myself because my Personal Training sessions end in 1.5 weeks and I want to weigh myself then. Only reason to post here is so that I can look forward to posting better updates every other week. I hope everyone else is doing well. Balait. I made rice the other day, I used Delia Smith's recipe from BBC and adapted it. Here it is: Use a large pan which allows you to spread the rice evenly Heat pan and put some oil in it Put some jeera, bayleaf, lachiya, cloves and roughly chopped onions in the oil and cook but dont brown the onions Put one bowl of rice in the pan and make sure you stir the rice so that all grains are covered in oil Have some water boiling at this stage and pour the water in the pan. One final stir and then cover the pan with a lid. Cook for 20 mins on low heat (don't lift the lid) When the rice are cooked and the water is gone, cover the pan with a clean cloth and put the lid back on. After 10 mins serve http://www.deliaonli...rfect-rice.html
  6. All of India has this. In hindi they say "Paye Lagoo" or something.
  7. Check you out, Malwa traditionalist. 'Pairi pena' is an indian tradition. I have hindu friends who also touch the feet of their elders. Now it is just knees though. I am from Doaba and we also have the same thing. We also do pairi pena. You are right that bowing is reserved for Guru ji only and peri pena is for elders.
  8. I wear a small dastar during my circuit class and during my outdoor running sessions. Like you my head is drenched in sweat. How do you deal with it, well it is just sweat. Take a bath when you get home and you are sorted. As for the sweaty scalp whilst running, well wear a loose parna rather than a patka. Patka sticks to your forehead where as a parna will give you more breathing room.
  9. I am trying to highlight the fact that visakhi was a cultural event until Guru ji made it a religiously significant for Sikhs. Also, I have not said anything about RITUALS, I have said cultural practises (I will need to look at the dictionary to see if ritual and cultural practises are the same). Throwing colour is not a ritual but a cultural thing to do, just like when the bride and groom are cleansed using haldi and tail before wedding. The visakhi example was that as sikhs we have no problem celebrating visakhi because Guru ji established Khalsa on that day but if they hadnt then we might still be celebrating it as a cultural event, much like basant etc. Some people would have called Visakhi a ritual/manmat if there was no religious significance attached to it. JSinghnz, only a sikh can have such thoughts because we are free to question things and follow our own path to Waheguru with the help of our Gurus. What I have said is entirely my opinion and it may be right or wrong depending on my understanding of things. We learn by questioning and discussions, dont we?
  10. Nothing wrong with some cultural practises. I agree a lot of them are outdated but we need to carry on the practises that don't harm anyone. Here is a thought, if Guru Gobind Singh jee had not established Khalsa on Visakhi, would we call it manmat today?
  11. Thanks singhni and Thank you HDSH for all your training tips before.
  12. I am wearing this tshirt to work which I have been trying to squeeze into since 2008 hahaha. I am losing weight, but I am not weighing myself, just going by the feeling. My diet is improving each day, I have given up juices and drink water instead. I bought 1L bottle of spring water and once that was finished, I just refill it at work. Apart from that, I make sure I eat fruit throughout the afternoon so my lunch is pretty reasonable. Not too light and not too heavy. I think, the healthy lifestyle does take some getting used to it, I am still at the early stages but I like it Oh and If I want to eat something unhealthy, I just have very little of it for taste. Like found this Ladoo in the fridge, I had a quarter of it, instead of having one or two like before. So If I want to eat things like Ladoos, cakes, I just have very small portion now.
  13. I like to do the extreme. So my diet is totally different to what it was before. As you say, fruit is the hardest to eat. I buy ready made fruit salad from ASDA and I manage to eat everything except Apples. Cant seem to eat the apples What do you guys think about nuts? I just bought almonds, pistachio and cashew nuts. I love the taste of pistachios but read that nuts are high in fats (good ones). Do the good fats become bad if you have too much of them?
  14. Did 30 mins of running yesterday at the treadmill and then 30 mins of weight training. Today, I ran 5k with my friend today. @S1ngh, that 7 layer burrito sounds good What was in it?
  15. I have been drinking plenty of water throughout the day. Breakfast, two slices of bread with nutella with chah. Lunch, Had noodles with vegetables and a banana. Snak, Actimel yoghurt. An Apple.
  16. I decided not to buy juice today and instead I bought a bottle of 1.5L water. Had that over 4 hours period. breakfast was a missi roti again with dahi. Lunch was two spicy fajitas with activia yogurt. Dinner was do rotiyans with daal. 1 hour Circuit session at the gym as well.
  17. Ohtwadi, the number of time you said Butt in your post worries me, butt you are right. Few years back, I found this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spirulina_(dietary_supplement) and remember you said this was a super food.
  18. My mum made alsi diyan pinniya. Problem is, can you still class them as healthy with all the sugar that goes in them?
  19. I am in too. But I already have my meals set for this weekend. I am using the M&S fuller for longer range. I will join you guys soon
  20. Now this I agree with. One huge gurdwara which has thousands of Sikhs attending each day/week. How good would that be?
  21. Singhni, I think Shaheed singh khalsa is talking about another Jagdish Kaur. http://www.sikhsangat.com/Index.php?/topic/66368-interview-with-holocaust-survivor-bibi-jagdish-kaur/page__hl__jagdish__fromsearch__1
  22. Try that and pretty soon you will end up with no channel. When two organisations who have been doing the same things merge, each party thinks they can do the job better and have better ideas. Result is you end up with dirty politics.
  23. How about lack of leadership? We cant even run our own gurdwaras, how will we run a country. Our current Sikh politicians are the most corrupt, who will we follow?
