  1. vwihgurU jI kw Kwlsw! vwihgurU jI kI &iqh!! what must the poor hundreds of thousands be thinking....He sent down 900 BILLION litres of water a MINUTE...and washed out whole cities on dec 26th... Waheguru alone knows His mauj gyani vwihgurU jI kw Kwlsw! vwihgurU jI kI &iqh!!
  2. vwihgurU jI kw Kwlsw! vwihgurU jI kI &iqh!! actually the First English Translation of SGGS that RHYMES is done in Four Volumes by Gurbachan Singh talib. Jarnail Singh
  3. vwihgurU jI kw Kwlsw! vwihgurU jI kI &iqh!! IMHO the Akal Takhat is the "takhat" of Akal ( Waheguru )...and Waheguru is in the SHABAD GURU JYOT in the GURU GRANTH JI... And that follows that the ONLY HUKMNAMA from GURU JI should come from the Vaaks of GURU GRANTH JI..in other words NOTHING and NOBODY can Supercede the GURBANI in the Shabad Guru. jarnail Singh
  4. vwihgurU jI kw Kwlsw! vwihgurU jI kI &iqh!! imho it is NOT Hari-mandir but HAR (siharee) mandir... as in hir mMdru hir swijAw hir vsY ijsu nwil ] har ma(n)dhar har saajiaa har vasai jis naal || The Lord built the Harimandir, the Temple of the Lord; the Lord dwells within it. Guru Amar Daas Ji Salok Vaaraan Thay Vadheek 1418 hir mMdir vsqu Anyk hY nv iniD nwmu smwil ] har ma(n)dhar vasath anaek hai nav nidhh naam samaal || Countless things are in the Harimandir, the Temple of the Lord; contemplate the Naam, and the nine treasures will be yours. Guru Amar Daas Ji Salok Vaaraan Thay Vadheek 1418 IF we read these SLOKS by GURU AMARDASS JI, we will realise they refer not to a stone temple.mandir..BUT to the HUMAN BODY. This Human body is the REAL mandir of The LORD and the meanings given make this amply clear. NO where in GURBANI does the word Har(siharee) Mandir refer to a physical building. At the time Guur amardass Ji wrote the above shabads..the Amrtisar harmandir darbar had not even been constructed. Jarnail Singh
  5. vwihgurU jI kw Kwlsw! vwihgurU jI kI &iqh!! Just a personal note. My late dad learnt Paath from Baba Gurbachan Singh Bhinderawaleh....and Baba Ji's method was One AAng repeated 25 times daily. He would ahve a heavy stick with him and the students would recite...and even if Baba Ji was "resting" with eyes closed... a slight mistake and the heavy stick would come down hard on the miscreant....END RESULT of this.... my dad had the entire Guru Granth Ji by heart...and not only that.....you only had to quote a "single line" of any shabad - beginning, centre, rahao, ending line....and he could Begin RECITING that shabad from memory and give you the AAng Number, writer of the shabad, vaar/pauri and where exactl y on the AAng the shabad was located. He also knew the dasam granth by heart and used to recite the banis with great bir ras...wish i could be just 10% as good ....I have absolutely no knowledge of Urdu, Brij Bhasha, sarb loh granth, sooraj parkash garnth and a host of other valuable resources ..all of which were standard syllabus in Baba ji's time... 6. vwihgurU jI kw Kwlsw! vwihgurU jI kI &iqh!! Diwali Ki Raat Deeweh Ballian.... Diwali And Sikhism ?? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WAHEGURU JI KA KHALSA WAHEGURU JI KI FATEH. ON DIWALI DAY Programmes at the Gurdwara I have often heard Raagis singing this shabad from Bhai gurdass Ji di Vaar - Diwali kee raat deeweh ballian.. Tareh jaat snaat amber bhalian...Phullan dee bagatt cun chun chalian.. Teerath jati Jaat naein nihalian... Har chaundharee jhaat vasai uchaleon..GURMUKH sukh faldaat SHABAD samalian.. The Raagis just TAKE the FIRST LINE as a sort of Rahao....and sing it repeatedly as if this is an INJUNCTION TO CELEBRATE DIWALI by lighting Lamps... This is a MAJOR MISREPRESENTATION of the TRUE MEANINGS.. Bhai Gurdass Ji is saying: JUST like on Diwali Night people light lamps,..BUT the LIGHT of these Lamps has NO LONG LIFE ( short period),..the light is a short term DIKHAWA only,...The NIGHT SKY is full of Big and small stars....BUT ONLY till DAWN of Day... FLOWERS Bloom....but only until they are plucked by the gardners...they never keep joined to the plant for long...Pilgrims are seen going to the TEERATHS...BUT they DONT stay there...only short visits... The CASTLES formed by Clouds in the SKY are Visisble...but they dont have any substance or solid form... THROUGH the SHABAD of the GURBANI the GURMUKHS realise the "shortlived" time of this WORLD..and thus learns the value of this HUMAN BIRTH and its resultant union with Timeless WAHEGURU. When we take the SHABAD in its ENTIREITY... we can see that the meaning of the First Line about Diwali is NOT AT ALL about lighting Diwas and Lamps to "celebrate diwali"...IT is just an ALANGKAAR - metaphor to show us how SHORTLIVED such lamps and their lighting is. DIWALI is a Religious Festival of the Working Classes (Vaish). That is WHY the Lachmee devi - devi of WEALTH is worshipped on this day. The Mannu Laws that DIVIDED the people of India into CASTES..also gave the four castes their own special Festivals.. THe BRAHMIN has VASAKHI ( the best food laden festival as expected for himself)... The Khatree was given DUSHERRAH..the VAISH ( Working class) has diwali, and the SHUDARS were given the Dusty colour throwing free for all Holi. Sikhs have pulled and shoved diwali into a "SIKH FESTIVAL" by claiming it is in honour of Bandi chhor Diwas of Guru Hargobind. I find it hard to beleive Sikhs would FORGET the torture and horrible martyrdom of GURU ARJUN just a short while ago and start clebrating with deepmala and fireworks the return from exile of Guru Hargobind ji. There is no record of any deepmala and fireworks in a continuous period after Guru vwihgurU jI kw Kwlsw! vwihgurU jI kI &iqh!! Hargobind Ji... the other FOUR GURUS NEVER even Visited Amrtisar. Bhai mani Singh was martyred by cut ting limb from limb for failing to call a meeting of sikhs on Diwali... hardly a reason for Sikhs to "celebrate" with fireworks and deepmala It is a historical fact and true that vasakhi and Diwali time were the time TWO Major Congregations of SIKHS were held yearly...BUT these two congregations were certinly NOT HELD to have FIREWORKS and DEEPMALA. These two WASTEFUL economically destructive ( how much Guru Di Golak is wasted on fireworks and deeps etc cause so many fires etc) customs have absolutley NOTHING to do with Gurmatt/Sikhi/our Principles or Maryada...BUT are a COPYCAT of the Hindu population's fireworks/lamps/agni devta pooja/lachmi pooja etc Sikhs beleive in Gamm/Khushi come from Waheguru and are His Bhaana... so if we are not sad over the shahedee of Guru arjun Ji, Guur Teg bahadur Ji, Bhai mani Singh Ji.... then we are also not happy over the release of Guur hargobind Ji. GURBANI teaches us to treat both Happiness and sadness equally. IF we SIKHS take Diwali/Vasakhi to be great time to CONGREGATE and spread GURMATT/do Gurbani Vichaar....its FINE....BUT when this is a time to burn money on lamps/fireworks/give and take mathiayee/giftsd/drink alcohol/gambling etc THEN this is anti gurmatt. I am afraid we have lapsed into the latter. jarnail singh :e: __________________ :e:
  7. vwihgurU jI kw Kwlsw! vwihgurU jI kI &iqh!! I second that. Akhand Paaths/sehaj paaths/kirtan etc done by PAID profesional bharreh de tatoo paathis are of no use at all to anybody. The bhareh de tataoo are just in it for the money... they come LATE for the Raol, keep an eye on the clock and begin to get "hopping mad" when the next paathi is even a few seconds late..some even exchange raols and do two or three at one go so that they cna go back early or go to another programme, they DEMAND things like badams, milk, cream, butter new soap oil etc and take these home, they will secretly call Home on your phone FREE ( wait till you see the phone bill after the akhand paath is over )... GURU JI has strictly enjoined us to do Path ourselves, or at least spend some time hearing it...BUT unfortunately what happens is the family sponsoring the akhand paath is so busy looking after guests ( so called sewa) that they have no time for any gurbani...at night raols there is NO ONE except the Paathi and Guru Ji...sometimes I have had to do two or more raols continuously because the enxt paathi never turned up or over slept and no one was there to see what is happening... When I was younger I came across a granthi who was an alcoholic....he couldnt do paath raol unless he was <Edited> drunk....many times the next paathi after him found the cushion "wet".....adn yet due to the :shortage" of pathis he was regularly called to do paaths This same situation exists today.....mainly because the Akhand Paath ahs become a mere RITUAL...each trying to out do the next man....when there are not enough paathis for even one paath.... we have FIVE Paaths simultaneously.... no one is bothered by teh GHOR BEADBI of GURBANI where FIVE or even MORE - like 50, 101, 200 Simultaneous Akhand Paaths are held at one place.. Such ritualsitic behaviour has made all this just a money earning exercise for paathis..FAST SPEED is a main asset...if no one undertsands a word of gurbani...its ok...who cares as long as the paath finishes in 48 hours...Full Speed ahead is the norm...especially at Bhog time when the Paath is DELAYED... The solution to all this ghor beadbi is Commitment: 1. DONT arrange a paath unless one can do it himslef... at least soem of the Five paathis must be family members ( if not all five)... 2. Make a commitment to hear the Gurbani ( at least half if not most of it)...Invite only family and close friends...dont make it a social ocassion to have one up on the neighbours .. Pay more attention to gurbani than langgar sewa... and serving guests only....and NEVER arrange to have SIMULTANEOUS akhand Paaths under any circumstances...and NEVER NEVER NEVER PAY and ORDER ready made Akahand Paaths or sehaj paaths from SGPC/Hazoor Sahib/Patna sahib etc.... this is another Ghor Beadbi where the MONEY is PAID through Internet/Post and t he ready made paath is dispatched like a Order in PIZZA..Home Delivery !!! Serously what Phall do you expect to get from such a home delivered paath ?? You have Never seen the Paathis, never seen / heard the paath ??? You Never participated in the arhambak ardass or bhog or final ardass ?? Who are you trying to Kidd here ?? IS Gurbani that cheap ?? Jarnail SinghWaheguroo Jee Ka Khalsa! Waheguroo Jee Kee Fateh!! 8. vwihgurU jI kw Kwlsw! vwihgurU jI kI &iqh!! Yes Sikhism/Gurmatt has nothing to do with such superstitions. Onions, gajaars, muliaan, garlic...grow underground and so cannot be eaten !!! Probably made up excuse by some LAZY Brahmin...too lazy to dirty his hands !!! Probably wanted the poor Jatt Jajmaan to give him saag, challian, chholeh, kanak, etc that would be more valuable and tasty !!! Onions and garlic produce "Gas" and also smell and so may be better not to use if one is going to do a paath raol in an akhand paath or kirtan chowki etc...BUT that is not a religious reason..it is commonsense. By the same token if a paathi is taking some medication that might cause drowsiness, coughing, gas etc also MUST not take that medicine for the period of his raol... The ridiculous reason that these are "underground" should aslo apply to Carrots and Radishes...BUT strangely it doesnt...so why the double standard. Gurdwara langgars dont use Garlic, but they do use ONIONS... again double standard of just following blindly the hindu customs or superstitions. Jarnail Singh
  9. vwihgurU jI kw Kwlsw! vwihgurU jI kI &iqh!! This just goes to show how really "holy" these devtas were. Lusting after other's wives and even thier own daughters....Kaam is so strong. THIS SHABAD is all about how these devtas behaved in KAAM... Read on Indir is the Devta that lusted after the Rishi gautam's beautiful wife. He waited outside the cottage and observed that the rishi always left at dawn for his early morning bath and simran session. So one fine morning he waited until Gautm had left his cottage, and then changed his form to that of Gautam he went in to sleep with "Gautam's wife". The wife was surprised to see her "husband" back so quick and in a hurry to do what he never did...but as a dutiful wife did what Inder wanted. When Gautam found out ( that part is not mentioned as to how he found out), He CURSED the MOON for not showing up Inder and threw his paarna ( towel) at the Moon...thats why the MOON has DARK SPOTS ( the towel) stuck on his face even today !!..and Gautam CURSED Indira that since he wanted the Female Sex Organ so much He was going to get it in "quantiites he would never forget... Lo and Behold Indira found himself covered from Head to Toe in Female Sex Organs !!! He had no place to run and hide.... so He went to Brahma....and begged Him to DO SOMETHING. Brahma told him Gautam a big time rishi had put the curse on him...so even Brahma couldnt do much...BUT He could mitigate slightly. DO ANYTHING said the desperate Indira.... adn so Brahma made the female sex organs on Indir's body turn into..... EYES seen on the PEACOCK's TAIL.... Now you people also know the reason why the PEACOCKS TAIL is so PROMINENTLY used in Hindu mandirs In another wonderful story, a Shivji Bhagat did a chalisa and bhagtee and got the vaar from Shivji that He could just place his hand on the forehead and say BHASAM and the person would become dust. Shiv Ji gave this //...and then immediately REGRETTED his action as the Bhagat wnated to TEST his // on ShivJi himself !!!! SO here is Shivji running for his life and followed by the Bhagat who wants to test his //.... they run through mountains and deserts.... over oceans and valleys...from one planet to another...through galaxies and milky ways...neither Shivji or his bhagat tiring.... FINALLY ShivJI went HEAD FIRST into a tiny HOLE in the Ground..... Ages went by.... the Bhagat wouldnt move UNTIL he had tested his //...and shivji couldnt come out or he would be dust. So he prayed to Brahma to save his axx !!..Brahma came along and turned into a beautiful girl to try and entice the bhagat away...but he failed.... then he tried another trick. The Girl started crying and told the Bhagat that her father had just died and she wanted the bhagat to cry with her. The Bhagat told her he didnt know how to "cry"..oh thats easy said the girl ( brahma)..you just beat your matha with your hand like this and say bhasam bhasam...and she began to do that.... the poor bhagat followed suit..but the moment he put his own hand on his forehead and said bhasam...He was DUST...and ShivaJI was saved. 10. vwihgurU jI kw Kwlsw! vwihgurU jI kI &iqh!! Gurbani is the single MOST important thing in a Sikh's life...yet most of us take it easy. We often spend years and years at studying for our profession/university etc but "dont have time" for Gurbani - the one thing that is going to serve us here and take us by the finger through the other. Gurbani through Santhiya just means that some one more knowledgeable takes you through its meanings, pronounciations, nuances, proper stops called bisrams, its unique grammar, spellings etc. The teacher will have to be very widely read in so many subjects covered in Gurbani. The Bai Vaaran, Punj Granthi, mentioned by one reader above are the 22 varaan in Guuru Granth Sahib Jee collected into one book, the Punj Granthi is a collection of a few Special Banis that set us off on course. Bhai gurdass varaan and swaiyas are important because Bhai Gurdass uses words spelled according to PUNJABI LITERATURE ( with bindis, adhak etc )...and the SAME WORDS are used in Gurbani according to GURBANI GRAMMAR ( without bindis, adhak etc). Guuru Ji wrote GURBANI according to the Grammar of GURU GRANTH JI precisely to keep GURBANI "unique"...otherwise what is there to keep Gurbani separate from ordinary Punjabi literature ?? Already I hear many saying: What is so difficult about Guur Granth sahib Da Paath.... the SAME oora airra are used in Guru Granth Ji and the same oora airra i studied in Standard One Punjabi School...so whats so "difficult". And in their gross ignorance they go on and start joining the letters and they think gurbani paath is done. Thus that is why the Bhai gurdass Varaan are said to be KUNJI - the key that opens the lock. The KUNJI tells you how a certain word needs to be Pronounced, when you come across the same word in Gurbani. A Shudh Gurbani Paath should always be learnt on a LARIDAAR SROOP - where the words are in one continuous loop. THAT will certainly keep you on your toes.....and the proper bisraams will stick in your brain. The Pad chhed bir makes things a bit too easy and then people also take it easy...and easy people make for lazy people...and we all know alzy student is not the best student or best sikh.
