  1. Matheen, As far as I know, in Sydney the problem was with the Lebanese youths, whereas I believe in Melbourne it has been mainly white Australian youths. However, I could be wrong as I live in neither of those cities! (thankfully
  2. Sikhs call for security after Melbourne temple attack Lauren Wilson From: The Australian January 15, 2010 12:00AM THE president of Melbourne's largest Sikh temple has requested additional night-time security from Victoria Police in the wake of an arson attack on another Sikh temple earlier this week. The request, made to Victoria Police in a letter yesterday, asks for "increased vigilance" from local authorities around the high-profile Sikh temple in the eastern Melbourne suburb of Blackburn, which has previously been visited by the Premier and the state Opposition Leader. The letter, written by the secretary of the Sri Guru Nanak Satsang Sabha temple at the behest of its president, Dashran Singh, says: "As you are no doubt aware, there have been an increased number of violent incidents involving (the) Indian community in Melbourne. "This is a matter of concern for all Australians. "We will appreciate if you can assist by having increased vigilance in the area, especially during night-time, to build confidence amongst the community," says the letter, seen by The Australian yesterday. Early on Wednesday a Sikh temple in Lynbrook, on Melbourne's southeastern fringe, was set on fire. Mr Singh yesterday said another Sikh temple in Cragieburn in Melbourne's north was also vandalised last week with eggs and stones. "We take the trouble to collect money to build our buildings for worship. This is very worrying," he said. Opposition Leader Ted Baillieu, who visited the Blackburn temple, or gurdwara, before travelling to India last year, said he was "greatly concerned" about the recent attacks on Indians and their places of worship. "In light of recent events, the police need to work very closely with the Indian community right across Victoria to make sure there is no repeat of any violence or vandalism," he said. Temple worshipper Vikramjit Kaur, who attended the Blackburn gurdwara yesterday with her four-year-old daughter Supreet and her mother, Surinder Kaur, said "there should be more security - when you hear about these (cases of vandalism), you are worried." Mr Singh said to date he had received "great support" from local authorities, but said he would be comforted by more security. A spokeswoman for Victoria Police yesterday said authorities were "taking every incident very seriously." But she said, "no matter how many police we have, we simply can't be present for every crime that takes place". Source: http://www.theaustra...f-1225819478091 Can the Victorian police still continue to claim that there is no element of racism? Seriously, these guys need to open their eyes and realize that there may be a problem here! If there isn't going to be any police assistance in protecting Gurdwaras, it would most definitely be justified if we defend them on our own.
  3. Melbourne Sikh temple arson 'an attack on religion' Lauren Wilson From: The Australian January 14, 2010 12:00AM A fire was deliberately lit inside the Nanaksar Thath Isher Darbar Sikh Temple, which is under construction, in Lynbrook overnight. Temple elder Satnam Singh and Amarpreet Singh examine the damage. Picture: Stuart McEvoy Source: The Australian AN elder at a Melbourne Sikh temple suspected to have been torched by arsonists has described the early-morning vandalism as an "attack on religion", placing further strain on diplomatic relations already damaged by a spate of serious assaults on Indian students. The partially built Nanaksar Thath Isher Darbar temple in Melbourne's outer southeastern suburbs, home to a congregation of Sikhs, many of whom come from the Punjab in northern India, is believed to have been set on fire with the use of molotov cocktails early yesterday. Distraught temple elder Satnam Singh said the wilful destruction of a "God house" was an attack on Indians. Detective Senior Constable Paul Stow, in charge of the investigation, said the fire was being treated as suspicious, but detectives were yet to establish whether race or religion had motivated the arsonists. "At this stage there is nothing to suggest it is (race-related) other than the fact that it happened to a temple," Detective Constable Stow told The Australian yesterday. The Sikh temple, known as a gurdwara, is in the middle of a large empty paddock in front of a sprawling housing estate at Lynbrook, on Melbourne's suburban fringe. The fire could put further pressure on bilateral relations between India and Australia, which have come under renewed strain since the stabbing of a 21-year-old Punjab-born accounting graduate, Nitin Garg, in a park in Melbourne's west earlier this month. Among the members of the Indian community who visited the temple yesterday to survey the damage was the consul-general of India in Melbourne, Anil Kumar Gupta, who walked around the site taking notes and talking with elders. One worshipper, who asked not to be named, said he was informed by police that three molotov cocktails and a jerry can containing petrol were found inside the temple. Constable Stow confirmed that "a number of items were located to suggest accelerant was used". Despite initial police reports indicating that a group of teens had lit "a couple of small fires" in piles of rubbish in the temple, Constable Stow said police believed the arson to be a "deliberately lit fire" rather than a bonfire that had burned out of control. A police spokeswoman last night said investigators were keeping an open mind about the investigation. "We can't discount anything," she said. Victorian police have been criticised and caricatured in India for being too quick to rule out racism as a motive for attacks on Indian students. Walking through the blackened interior yesterday, Mr Singh said the fire was "very, very personal". "This is an attack on religion, this is very bad," he said. "This should not have been done, this is a God house, everybody who comes here prays to God." When asked whether he believed the attack to be race-related, Mr Singh said: "Yes, attack on Indians." The deputy high commissioner of India, V.K. Sharma, yesterday said: "We have no comment to make." It is believed two people were seen leaving the temple near midnight. 4. This 'Baba' is no Baba - in reality he is a former Malaysian Airlines pilot called Sukdev Singh. I don't have time to elaborate at the moment, but there has been some controversy over his views on Sikhi. There should be another thread about him somewhere. I like to think of myself as a open-minded person, but I am a bit hesitant when a person who doesn't have any spiritual credentials is passing themselves off as being a Sant or Baba - which is clearly the case in this video.
  5. This is some real BS. Makes my blood boil. The worst thing is that I learnt about it from foreign news sites. The one local Australian news site I usually visit hasn't even mentioned it!
  6. But why is it wrong? Some elaboration is necessary for such a forceful statement. Like the previous user has commented, it would be best to speak to the Gursikhs who practice jhatka face-to-face and then perhaps you can tell them it is wrong, as well as enlighten them with your reasons as to why it is so. Peace.
  7. A true tragedy that should be condemned regardless of who was ultimately behind it. God only knows who the true culprits were/are. Perhaps one day the truth will be revealed. It's just a shame that it has tarnished the image of the Sikh community. Looks like there is a new documentary out about it. I have yet to watch it, but if you are from Canada/North America, I believe you can watch it at: http://watch.discoverychannel.ca/mayday/season-5/mayday-explosive-evidence/ Peace.
  8. How is this a 'blood sacrifice'? The act shown in the video is known as Jhatka. It is part of the tradition within the Hazuri Sikhs of Nanded. It was also part of the traditions of the wider Khalsa (depending on which line of history you subscribe), however this is not the case any more. No one is compelled to do it, however, such traditions should be respected and whoever so wishes to practice Jhatka should be allowed to do so without prejudice or condemnation against them. This topic has been discussed a number of times I believe, perhaps do a search so that you may be able to gain a fuller understanding of the Maryada in place at Takht Sri Hazoor Sahib. Peace.
  9. When I was in India earlier this year, my father fell ill whilst we were in Ludhiana. I ended up taking our driver out in the middle of the night in search of a pharmacy. It took us a good 20 minutes to find one that was open at that time of the night, but in that time, I had come across no less than a dozen 'English wine and beer' shops which were all open and doing brisk business. Now that's messed up! I wanted to share an article which I just came across: http://networkedblog...10842707?ref=nf Also, the article also refers to the organisation that runs the drug-addict treatment centres. The website for them is: http://www.barusahib.org/index.php Peace.
  10. Mudhsuden AKA Monty Singh Panesar Seems like a nice bloke, his stand with James Anderson during the 1st Ashes Test at Cardiff was amazing and helped England regain the Ashes from the Aussies.
  11. Bro, what's that about? I'm not from the UK so I don't know the politics behind that comment - quite interested as to whether there's a story behind it.
  12. All these guys are nothing but closet Athiests who are too scared to come right out and say it - so instead of leaving Sikhi, they try and degrade it by attempting to apply their god-less philosophy with Sikh teachings. Sooner or later they're going to get exposed for their misdeeds. But just like a dog who has no master present, it is barking louder and louder out of desperation for attention.
  13. Veer ji, Take a look at the following video: However, may I also suggest another thing to you brother - don't get too hung up with science and Gurbani. Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji Maharaj was not meant to be a science textbook. With that being said, there are indeed many things in Gurbani that coincide with scientific facts. But ultimately, the primary aim of Maharaj is to provide us with the knowledge to unite our souls with the Divine (Waheguru). It is pure spiritual bliss that is contained within Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji Maharaj.
  14. They claim that Sikhi is a perfect creation from our Gurus (which of course no one doubts), but yet they feel the need to 're-trace, re-package, re-brand and re-market' Sikhi. To me this shows that they in fact, do not believe that Sikhi is perfect! I guess with all the pakhandi babey floating around, it was inevitable that one would pop up in Malaysia. Hopefully the sangat there starts to realise that what he is peddling by way of his philosophy is dangerous and total bakwaas. its more of a catchy gimmick than some real change in maryada etc, awkward as it seems even to me haha. he is not dressed up as a 'holy man ' but in full bana of which he is fond .i think he even used to wear khalsa bana to work . and he is not known as a baba ,but simply as mr or sardar sukhdev singh . i think you should have read what i wrote more carefully . he is not connected to no dera but ardent proponent of akal takht maryada which is the mainstream popular maryada followed in malaysia as there is very little of akj/damdami taksal/3ho/nanakseria influence in malaysia . i know that he sometimes can say and do things which are awkward but he is part of the youth khalsa network there which always puts him straight. if u were to know him as i did in the past he is just a simple straightforward well loved amritdhari sikh putting in his 2 pence for sikhi parchar. He is an english educated gentleman with no interest to start any new maryada . you would realise that if u flew to malaysia on the next flight . i knew him in the past and all i remember are sweet memories of him hosting and letting our panth's greatest preachers and ragi jathas to stay in his house during their tours of kuala lumpur ,malaysia . He is also a regular speaker and kirtanea at Sikh Nujawan Sabha annual youth samelans/ camps. He works closely with some of the main sikh youth leaders there such as surat singh ,hari singh ,malkit singh ,gyani mohinder singh, avtar singh etc . the source of the article against him as i have said before is a couple of persons who wish for all sikhi parchar to be done in pure punjabi not understood by most of the youths due to bad upbringing and get uncomfortable with sukhdev singh's gimmicky styles . this is a local sikh malaysian issue to do with parchar style rather than pakhandey babas . read more about the history of sikhs in malaysia ,the parchar of sikhi in malaysia , and you will catch what i mean.you can also visit the sikh naujawan sabha malaysia website which is a good source of malaysian sikhi related information . if you understod the politics of malaysia and how the muslim goverment there as well as pentecostal christian missionaries there target sikh youths there apart from drug and alcoholism and a big patit puna problem ,as well as hindu swamis popular with many sikh families there you would be appreciative of all the efforts young professional sikhs there take to pool their resources and do sikhi parchar. Bhai sahib, you have not addressed the key points of: a) why is he doing things in the video that looks like the sathya sai baba would do b) what is he distributing in the chamcha I can understand that perhaps parchaar need be modified to identify with the local sangat, but this does not mean gurmat and rehit should be foresaken. Please provide your justification of the video and explain the chamcha 'ceremony' as shown in the picture. why ask me veerji or be quick to make conclusions and assumptions yourself.im not a forensic expert in analysing tiny details from some blurry shaky video neither was i there and neither the the fuller context of that video or picture . you have visited his website so why not email or message him and let the rest of us know his justification for this gimmicks. while you and me are still debating about him ,he has probably received a good sorting out from either his wife( bibi jaswinder kaur) or the Sikh Naujawan Sabha or senior members of his own kirtan jetha hahaaa . as i have told you sukhdev singh among the local malaysian sikh sangat is well known to land himself into silly trouble over little gimmicks for which he gets told off sternly either by his more head-wise educated wife or other sikh youth leaders and retracts . if you really knew much about the inside story of parchar in malaysia ,what im saying is what you would get to know haha .if you knew sukhdev singh as i did in the past he is definately no head strong baba type but more of a normal gursikh with a soft pussycat personality when confronted hahaha . Another sikh preacher over there who constantly lands himself in trouble is a guy called Khalsajee, a great preacher who has been responsible for a whole load of monas becoming amritdharees etc but on the other hand can never stop from inventing little maryada rules of his own which again gets him drawing swords with everyone else unnecessarily . At the end of the day ,the sikh population in Malaysia during the 2000 census was estimated to be ruffly 125,000. most of this is concentrated in the capital of malaysia ,i.e K.L , and spread out in other towns on the west coast with a little sprinkling on the east coast ,as well a further tinier sprinkling on the northern part of the island of borneo which constitutes East Malaysia . Hence everyone some how 'knows' and is connected to someone especially since jaat paat barriers and majha/malwa barriers started falling apart from the late 70s and 80s onwards. By this im implying its not difficult to sort out any local guy like sukhdev singh if he gets out of hand . Sikhs have been in Malaysia since around the last 100 years ,hence the bulk of sikhs there are not from a relatively newer migration unlike the UK and USA or Canada and Europe . And also because its nearer to India ,hence it has been a favoured hotspot and common stop over on the tour trail map of sikh parcharaks and ragi jethas . aAlso because of very relaxed visa rules in the past most of these parcharaks would stay in malaysia for months on end preaching and preaching and preaching . i remember listening to gyani maan singh chaur (whom i assume you know who he was) for months on end as a kid ,and i remember listenimng to dharam singh zakhmi's keertan jetha continously for 3 months every evening for 2.5 hours in 1977 and professor manjit singh for God knows how many months before he later became Akal Takht jathedar . This is not a brag . The point im trying to make is that the Malaysian Sikh sangat is not relatively unripe and raw ,easy to be prowled upon by babas local or international . the sikhs there are highly organised ,are relatively well educated and hence very less suscepsible to pakandey baba attacks . When the supposed nanakseria baba amar singh (whose is in hayes ,UK now) did his bad stuff in malaysia ,the sikhs there did not wait for the Akal Takt to move . Rather they got together under the leadership of the late Surjeet Singh Besia and Gyani Isher singh jee and managed to get the immigration department to ban him from visiting malaysia and singapore as well as procured a written apology from him . btw he was not a former pilot for your records but an aeronautical engineer as i mentioned in my 1st post on this topic . So Sikhs should stoop to the level of other faiths and use cheap gimmicks for parchaar? Yes I understand that the Malaysian Sikh community has been out of Punjab for some generations, however, this would mean that parchaar may be needed in local languages and/or in english, and via other methods capable of reaching the local Sikhs. But does this involve such cheap trickery as has been shown in the video? Surely such things are not according to Gurmat or Maryada. Moreover, I do not consider the video and photo 'grainy' for one can easily make out that it is Sukdev Singh. I am aware of Sukdev's involvment with the SNSM, and I am also aware of the allegations of 'hera-pheri' going on within this organisation. He may or may not be an aeronautical engineer, but he is also a pilot, for I have met him in person on a flight on which he was the captain.
  15. Hey all, Came across this artist, Mandeep Sethi, who appears to be based in California. I downloaded an album which was available for free download, and there is a gem of a song on there called '1984'. I think it is an awesome track and I urge all of you to give it a listen. I've uploaded the single track at http://www.zshare.ne...3705414cc5b457/ However, the rest of the album is just as good, and is available at http://www.organikre...ture/ALBUM.html Also, his MySpace can be found at http://www.myspace.com/mandeepsethI Check it out guys, support our own Sikh artists! Peace.
  16. Dera leader eliminated, and now RSS (Rastriya 'Sikh' Sangat) stooge Rulda shot at.... looks like Singhs are feeling restless - about time perhaps.
  17. Here's the only news link I could find so far: http://www.punjabnewsline.com/content/view/17781/38/
  18. Brothers, we should not be saying abusive things in regards to Ram Chander. Remember that Sikhi respects all. Gurbani indeed states that these persons achieved and performed some good deeds - however, Gurbani also states that they were not unfathomable and hence susceptible to the Hukam of Akaal Purakh. Moreover, they were not perfect and ultimately succumbed to maya too. This is why they are not worthy of worship - although we should respect them for whatever good they had done. Btw I've bolded some statements just in case the Hindu-phobes label me an RSS agent
  19. They claim that Sikhi is a perfect creation from our Gurus (which of course no one doubts), but yet they feel the need to 're-trace, re-package, re-brand and re-market' Sikhi. 20. But why is he 'blessing' people (and that too in a way which is akin to molestation!) and why is he distributing some sort of 'holy' water? Yes maybe he has done some seva etc., but that doesn't excuse him from having to explain the above-mentioned activities which look like pure unadulterated manmat. His is a former airline pilot with Malaysia Airlines (MAS) - yet the video shows him portraying himself to be a 'holyman' of sorts. Interestingly, his organisation promotes the following line of thought: They claim that Sikhi is a perfect creation from our Gurus (which of course no one doubts), but yet they feel the need to 're-trace, re-package, re-brand and re-market' Sikhi. To me this shows that they in fact, do not believe that Sikhi is perfect! I guess with all the pakhandi babey floating around, it was inevitable that one would pop up in Malaysia. 21. Relax guys. Think logically and rationally with the Guru's teachings in mind. We shouldn't right off an entire community - there are some Hindus who are extremists and some that aren't. Basically every community has it's bad apples, ours included (KP Gill, Gen. K Brar, P Badal etc.). These clowns supporting this fascistic nonsense are no doubt traitors. But we would be even bigger traitors to hate an entire community, for this is not what Guru Sahib has taught us. The only people a Sikh should fight are the perpetrators of oppression; be they Muslims, Hindus, Christian, Jew or even Sikh.
  22. Just making a slight correction there brother!
  23. People, whether or not we like India, one thing needs to be considered - all of of our Gurdwarey/Shrines as well as the majority of our community are in India. An attack on India by anyone is not good news for us.
  24. This is a silly question. Firstly, Sikhi teaches us never to look down on anyone regardless of caste, creed, sex, religion etc. Secondly, if the person is a Sikh, there is even more reason not to look down on them - we should be helping one another and those who are more advanced in their Sikhi should be more encouraging to those who are perhaps wanting to learn more to better their own Sikhi. Come one guys, if we keep looking down on eachother, we have no unity and with no unity there is no strength. If we unify ourselves from within, we will be a stronger community.
