  1. I shall confess it pains me greatly to read such comments, such is the weakness of my character.

    Nidar Singh Nihang has dedicated his life to learning this ancient and forgoten art, an art which our Great Guru's and Shaheed's practiced and lived by. An art which gave glory to the name of Singhs of old, their fearlessness was not just a firm belief in Dharam, common among all religious people, but a true knowledge of one's self through Shastarvidiya, the understanding that it brings is deep and only to be understood when experienced. From Gurdev Ji's early years he has trained, dedicating himself to excellence, training more than 12-14 hours daily with a Master who was known for being very heavy handed when teaching, this is no easy feat, in total honestly it is one of the hardest types of tapaysa. I myself have trained with Gurdev Nidar Singh Nihang, and I have spent months with my Gurbani teacher, Sant Giani Inderjit Singh Ji, while both require a great amount of discipline in mental focus and clarity, I find Shastarvidiya to be extremely more difficult because along with mental focus and learning comes the strengthening of the body with training, which usually consists of correctional beatings (blessings) to help teach certain movements.

    I spent a great deal of time learning from Sant Giani Inderjit Singh Ji, a very traditional sampradyik Giani, who's learning is very much unparalleled amongest the top foremost scholars. Before sitting down with Gurdev Nidar Singh I was skeptical thinking about how Nihungs would/could have a different viewpoint on Gurmat Sidhant when compared to the Nirmala scholars but was astonished about the similarities in viewpoint and metholodgy to understanding Gurbani and other historical scriptures. Gurdev Nidar Singh's knowledge of Gurbani also shocked me, while his martial prowess is known and now ackowledged world wide, with top martial artists in all fields paying respect to Gurdev Ji's skill and knowledge, his intimate understanding of Gurbani is kept secret and close to his heart.

    It is very easy to slander, swear, demonize and belittle Gurdev Nidar Singh Nihang simiply because of different views held, but I can guarantee you no one will ever match up to his discipline in training, his beautiful and firm character, and his intellect. His mission is only to spread the glory of the Guru's by showing the world the art in which our Guru's and Shaheed's were so great at. The world is now paying attention to Gurdev Ji, and suddently martial artists across the globe are believing the the claims of Sikhs being fercoious and skillfull warriors in the past... With Guru Ji's Kirpa there will be enough students to carry this beautiful art, The Guru's Legacy, forward and one day the Singhs shall reclaim the glory of their great ancestors.

  2. TRAGEDY IN WISCONSIN, ACTIONS FOR THE FUTURE

    I was shocked and saddened to hear of the attack by a mad gunman on a Gurdwara in the USA. I sincerely offer my condolences to the families of all those killed, pray for the speedy recovery and well being of all the injured and applaud the brave police men/women of Wisconsin who finally confronted and stopped the hate-filled fool responsible for the attack.

    On the day the news of this attack was filtering through I was, by sheer coincidence, teaching traditional Sikh methods of dealing with assailant’s armed with firearms confronting you in the street and in your home. Alas, if the brave Satwant Singh who tried so bravely to tackle the deranged assailant had had these martial skills of his Nihang ancestors, he might be alive today and the assailant subdued and in custody.

    Let me inform my Sikh brothers and sisters that within the original Sikh martial art, Shastar Vidiya, that I teach, alongside yudh vidiya (traditional combat skills), sava rakhsha (personal self defence), and gao rakhsha (village defence), I teach traditional greh rakhia (home defence) techniques, stratagems and tactics. I also have real world experience of dealing with firearms. Throughout our history, we Sikhs were known for our an incredible array of martial skills. It is a fact that centuries of facing foreign invaders honed our ancestors’ survival skills in these areas.

    On a recent trip to the USA the world renowned marksman, knife expert and hunter Lyn Thompson of Cold Steel, along with his crew, all of them experienced martial arts masters, had an opportunity to train in and assess Shastar Vidiya. They were basically amazed by its effectiveness and sophistication – click here to see their full assessment. The sad thing is that despite it’s obvious greatness, Shastar Vidiya is gaining more recognition outside the Sikh community than within it.

    Looking forwards, and noting the hostile climate faced by many Sikh communities in the USA and elsewhere, I plead with you to avail of this opportunity – let me share with you these traditional life saving skills and teachings of Nanak Guru Gobind Singh. For the Khalsa, just as Shabad is Guru, so equally are Shastar. If nothing else, accept this sewa of Shastar Vidiya from me, for this is your inheritance and you must reclaim it.

    4. That is what my janam {birth} was for , the destructionof my Mother's beautiful youth. I have become a Kuhadha {axe} and destroyed thethree Sukh {pleasures} in life.

    "UBHEH PEEN KUCHEE NAARI BHAARI ROOP GUNN VAARI."

    Are you translating this literally? Or just using a steek and translating the steek? You translated the line above to mean... "The istri {female} of splendid physique and superiorbahaviour, "

    Kuchee Bhaari here means big breasted... I just like to do my translations more literal...

    Also you wrote "{He refers to neglecting his own pretty wife and perpetually searching forother women to engage in lustful activities with}."

    What makes you think he neglected his own wife? He was deeply in love with his wife, but his wife (as written in chapter 1) was having an affair on him. Also being a King do you not think he had the pleasure of "enjoying" many women with big breasts? I was taught when going through this granth that Bharthari Yogi is explaining that one should not regret anything in life, as that is the biggest Dukh in life. Also he shows his Nimrata by saying he has not done X, Y and Z etc.

  4. It's wrong because then we are doing idol worship which Guru Gobind Singh Ji told us not to do. Why bring in brahmin rituals in sikhi? Sikhi is perfect as it is, we dont need tilak and aarti (the plate) in Sikhi.

    "Jab Lag Khalsa Rahe Niara, Tab Lag Tej Diyun Main Saara, Jab Eh Gayi Bipran Ki Reet, Main Na Karun Inki Parteet" Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaj

    Maybe this is why to some extent we aren't prospering as a panth, because we bring these Brahmin rituals into Sikhi.

    What about when the Guru's received Gur-gaddi, was a Tilak not applied to them with coconuts infront of them? Baba Budha Ji himself put the Tilak on the first 6 Gurus. Below is a picture of Baba Budha Ji placing a Tilak on Guru Ram Das Ji when Maharaj was receiving his Gur-gaddi.

    I think this is done with the Guru Granth Sahib when it is first installed or first printed. I am not sure exactly on the Marayda on this, but I know it has been mentioned by old Mahapursh before. I think we need to be a bit more critical when targetting certain practices which we are unaware of. There are many practises today in Sikhi which many people havn't heard of, and just because we have not heard of them is not reason to be against them.

    In Sarbloh Granth the practise of applying Tilak is mentioned in a good context, read below.

    ਉਠ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਤਿ ਕਰਹੁ ਇਸਨਾਨਾ, ਪਦ ਪੰਕਜ ਮਹਿ ਲੀਨਾ ॥

    Wake up in the early hours of the morning, andmerge with the Lotus Feet [of the Lord].

    ਜਥਾ ਸਕਤਿ ਦਾਨ ਭੂਖੈ ਕਹੁ, ਨਿਮਖ ਨਿਮਖ ਰੰਗ ਭੀਨਾ ॥

    As much as your means allow give charity to the hungry, in every moment be entrenched in the love [colour] of Vahiguru.

    ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਨਿਵਾਰ, ਦਯਾ ਮਨ ਲਾਵਹੁ, ਹਿੰਸਾ, ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਤ੍ਯਾਗੋ ॥

    Destroy anger, instill compassion in your mind, disregard violence and poor thinking.

    ਇਕਮਨ ਹੋਇ ਭਜਹੁ ਨਾਰਾਇਨ, ਖਿਮਾ ਧਰਮ ਅਨੁਰਾਗੋ ॥

    With one mind worship Narayan, create a love for forgiveness and rightousness.

    ਤੀਰਥ, ਬਰਤ, ਨੇਮ, ਸੁਚਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਯਾ, ਸੀਲ, ਸੰਤੋਖ, ਆਚਾਰੋ ॥

    [Make] Pilgrimages, desireless worship, the Name, truthful actions, restraint, contentment your nature.

    ਪੂਜਾ, ਤਿਲਕ, ਹੋਮ, ਗਾਯਤ੍ਰੀ, ਸੰਧ੍ਯਾ, ਤਰਪਨ ਧਾਰੋ ॥

    Conduct worship, [adorn a] Tilak, [conduct] Havans, [recite] Gayatri [mantras], worship at the prescribed times, instill these virtues [in your heart].

    ਗੁਰੁ, ਠਾਕੁਰ, ਪਿਤੁ, ਮਾਤ, ਬੰਧ ਜਨੁ, ਮਿਸ਼੍ਟਿ ਬਚਨ ਅਭਿਲਾਖੋ ॥

    Speak sweetly to your Guru, your Takhur, Father, Mother, and in laws.

    ਸਭਿ ਕੀ ਰੇਨੁ ਹਇ ਰਹੇ ਪੰਖਰੂ, ਮੰਦਾ ਕਿਸਹਿ ਨ ਭਾਖੋ ॥੯॥

    Become the dust from the feet of others and stay humble, do not call anyone else bad.

    ਇਸ਼੍ਟ, ਦੇਵ, ਰਿਖੀ, ਪਿਤ੍ਰ, ਬ੍ਰਹਮਨ, ਗਉ, ਅਭ੍ਯਾਗਤਿ ਮਾਨੋ ॥

    Recognize [respect] your Beloved, God, Sages, your Father,the Brahman, the Cow, and those who have their face to the Guru

    ਕੀਟ ਹਸਤਿ ਮੇਰੁ, ਤ੍ਰਿਣਨਨ ਮਹਿ, ਸਰਬ ਨਿੰਰਜਨਿ ਜਾਨੋ ॥

    In a small ant, a large elephant, a massive mountain and even in a small blade of grass, the Lord Niranjan resides in all.

    ਸਤ੍ਯ ਰੂਪ ਆਤਮ ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ, ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਸਤਿ ਪਹਿਚਾਨੋ ॥

    Your true Aatma [form] never dies, recognize Braham [God] as always true as well.

    ਏਕ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਸਭ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਪੂਰਨ, ਆਦਿ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਭਗਵਾਨੋ ॥੧੦॥

    The One Braham is in all; Bhagvaan was here from the very beginning.

  5. Everyone has mentioned non-Sikh sources which is cool if you want that look at the book Sicques, Tigers or Thieves by Amandeep Singh Madra and Parmjit Singh on amazon.

    If you want our own sources for history look at Gur Sobha by Kavi Sainapati, Gurbilas Patshahi 10 by Koer Singh, Gurbilas Patshahi 10 Sukha Singh [Patna Sahib], Bansavalinama by Kesar Singh Chibbar, Mehima Prakash, Guru Kian Sakhian by Bhatt Svaroop Singh, all of these are texts written in the 1700s [CE]. If you want texts written in the 1800s [CE] look at Pracheen Panth Prakash by Ratan Singh Bhangu, Gurpratap Suraj Prakash by Mahan-kavi Santhok Singh Ji, Naveen Panth Prakash by Giani Gian Singh, Twarik Guru Khalsa by Giani Gian Singh and probably a lot more which I do not remember from the top of my head.

  6. Vadhiyana to all for the Pelha Prakash of Adi Granth Sahib in the Harimandar Sahib.

    After Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji installed the Adi Granth in Harimandar Sahib the Guru gave updesh [teaching] to the Sangat [congregation] about the Granth.

    Kavi Santhok Singh Ji writes in his Gurpratap Suraj Prakash Granth that Guru Arjan Dev Ji said:

    ਗ੍ਰਿੰਥ ਜਹਾਜ ਸੁ ਭੌਜਲ ਕੋ ਤਰ ਜਾਤਿ ਸੁਖੇਨ ਜਿਨੀ ਚਿਤ ਲਾਯੋ ।੪।

    The Granth is a vehicle [which gives liberation] whosoever implants [the teachings] in their mind they are easily taken across [the terrible ocean].

    ਸ੍ਰੀ ਸੁਰ ਕੇਰ ਸਰੀਰ ਜੁਊ ਸਭਿ ਥਾਨ ਸਮੈ ਸਭਿ ਨਾ ਦਰਸੈ ਹੈਂ ।

    The body of the Guru is sometimes not available for Darshan, as time and space permit.

    ਗ੍ਰਿੰਥ ਰਿਦਾ ਗੁਰ ਕੋ ਇਹ ਜਾਨਹੁ ਉੱਤਮ ਹੈ ਸਭਿ ਕਾਲ ਰਹੈ ਹੈ ।

    However, recognize the Granth as the heart of the Guru, it is highest because it will be viewable in all times and places.

    ਮੇਰੇ ਸਰੂਪ ਤੇ ਯਾਂਤੇ ਹੈ ਦੀਰਘ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜਾਨਿ ਅਦਾਇਬ ਕੈ ਹੈ ।

    For this reason recognize the Granth Sahib as the Greater Master, and respect it as such.

  7. Weapon weapon [shastar pooja] is a key tradition in Khastriya Dharam and has been practised by warriors of India for thousands of years. Weapon worship [shastar pooja] is directly related to Goddess worship [Chandi pooja] as they are seen as the same form in traditional Khasatriya ideology. Even before Rama battled Ravana, Rama dedicated various days for worshipping the Goddess before attacking Ravana.

    The second link shows that Guru Gobind Singh Ji commanded his loyal warriors to clean and pray to Shastars, through various recitations of scriptures from Dasam Guru Granth Sahib, and other texts. Traditionally Jhatka, a goat sacrifice, was done to appease Chandi and the blood was anointed on the various weapons. This goat sacrifice, Jhatka, is still done at Takht Hazur Sahib and by various Nihung groups.

  8. Sri Manglacharan Puran Ji is the real name of Sri Sarbloh Granth Sahib. In the scripture, the author Guru Gobind Singh Ji writes Himself the name of the Granth at the end and calls it Sri Manglacharan Puran. At the end of the story of Sarbloh Avatar, Guru Gobind Singh Ji writes:

    ਪੰਚ ਸਹੰਸ੍ਰ ਸਲੋਕ ਯਾ ਗ੍ਰੰਥਾ ॥ ਇਕ ਤਿਸ ਕੋ ਮੰਗਲਾਚਰਣ ਪੰਥਾ ॥

    This Granth [is comprised of] 5,000 Saloks, the story of 'Manglacharan' has been described within it.

    ਸਾਤਸੈ ਸਲੋਕ ਦੇਵੀ ਮਹਾਤਮ ॥ ਦ੍ਵਾਦਸਿ ਚਤੁਰ ਬਿੰਸ ਅਵਤਾਰਨ ॥

    There are 700 Saloks in praise of the Devi, and 1200 Saloks describing the [various Vishnu] Avatars.

    The start of the Granth begins with the praise of the Devi, Maha Maya [The Great Illusion]. Then the story of Manglacharan begins which refers to the story of Sarbloh Avatar, an avatar of Mahakal who must destroy the Demon Beerajnaad to uphold Dharam. After the story of Sarbloh Avatar is described there begins another section which is a condensed version of the Chaubis Avatar in Dasam Guru Granth Sahib. This section contains the stories of the following Vishnu Avatars:

    - Mach (fish) Avatar

    - Kach (tortoise) Avatar

    - Barhā (Wild-Boar) Avatar

    - Nar Singh (Half Man half lion) avatar

    - Purshraam Avatar

    - Rām Avatar, called 'Bīj Ramaein'

    - Krishna avatar, called, Dasam Sakand (tenth chapter of Bhagvad Purana)

    I am writing an essay on the Raag Gond, and on page 874, Namdev is talking about the various figures in Hindu mythology who were redeemed and whom were not. I am having trouble with the reference to Kali. It says "The Lord, who killed Kaysee and Kans, gave the gift of life to Kali."

    Does anyone know, is this talking about the goddess Kali or the demon Kali or another one? And what is the story referenced? In what situation was Kali given life??

    Hello there,

    Thanks for the question, it just shows how sometimes the English translations we find are very incomplete.

    So the Kali that is being referenced here is not the Goddess Kali, but rather this deals with the stories of Sri Krishna, and how He killed Kaysee and Kans.

    or any info on when to recite etc etc

    This is from Akal Ustat, from the Deenan Ki Pritpaal [svaiya]. Some kathavachiks have said that this is good to recite when a women is pregnant, as it praises how Bhagvaan takes care of everyone.
