  4. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/blogs-ouch-26193704 At the age of 38, artist Raj Singh Tattal was unemployed and depressed. Then he received a diagnosis of Asperger's Syndrome and everything changed. Singh Tattal - also known as the "Pen-Tacular-Artist" now finally understands his obsessive tendency to draw pictures for hours on end. It is a common symptom of the autism spectrum disorder. He has learned to let the condition drive his creativity, and this year he has four exhibitions lined up in his hometown, London. In an interview with Ouch, Singh Tattal talks about his obsessions, support networks and being part of the Sikh community. I'm very obsessive. Where other people might take a month, each of my drawings takes four days” How does Asperger's Syndrome affect you? I'm very obsessive. Where other people might take a month, each of my drawings takes four days. I'm very reclusive as well - I probably spend 95% of the time by myself. I don't really like change. I haven't been out of London for 12 years, I have multiple pairs of the same trainers and I've eaten baked beans every day for 20 years. Some of this stuff sounds quite trivial, but over time it starts annoying people around you. When I'm at home I don't sit with my family in the living room and have only started eating downstairs to try and make an effort. People used to think I was depressed because I was in my room but actually I was depressed when I had to leave it. I started drinking over the years to try and fit in with people and have had friends in the past, but at the moment I have zero friends. I don't drink, I just draw - and I am the happiest I've ever been. How has your life changed since the diagnosis? Once I got diagnosed, I decided to change my lifestyle. Rather than use my obsessive nature on silly things like games or films, I decided to focus on drawing. Drawing used to be a passion, but you hadn't drawn for 11 years until your diagnosis. Why? I have such an obsessive nature that when I draw, I don't just do it now and then, I put in ridiculous hours. That's not very good for looking for work or trying to work, so I had to stop. When I started again, I decided to go full force. I've been practising drawing for 14 months in my room. I knew the standard I wanted to get to and now that I'm there, I'm happy to show my work to people. What are your drawings like? They are all black and white, graphite and charcoal drawings. I don't do one particular subject. I've done a lot of comic-based drawings and I'm doing some artwork on emotions, people in distress. It's not because I'm a morbid person but because I've gone through a really dark space. I relate to the sad ones. What's it like being a Sikh on the spectrum? I've been going to my support group for a year and I've only ever met one other Asian person. That's not because Asian people don't have Asperger's Syndrome, It's because Asian people tend to cover it up. It's not something they really talk about. If I was from a white English family, people would have picked up my symptoms very young because I was a typical Asperger's kid. I'm now slowly telling my relatives - who I don't even know because I'm so reclusive. I've started talking to them over Facebook because I want to make an effort now. What do you gain by going to a support group? I've always hated myself, because I'm a pretty intelligent guy - I managed to get myself a degree - but after so many problems, I started to think that I was a failure. People make you feel like you're a bad person because you can't do certain things. Going (to the support group), you see people who are similar to you and you realise that they're really good people. It makes you look at yourself in a different way. I would recommend anybody who's on the spectrum - or even thinks they are - just to turn up. Even if you are depressed, it is nice and comforting to speak to other people who can give you advice and help you out. Why did you give a present to your local Sikh temple? When you start a new career, you normally give a gift. The present is a drawing of the Sikh's 10th Guru, Guru Gobind Singh Ji. He has the heart of a saint and the body of a warrior and I've always aspired to be like that

  6. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PwSlzijgt9w Sikh monument irks Kisumu preachers KISUMU, Kenya, Feb 8 – The controversial monument erected by the Sikh community in one of the streets in Kisumu has caused jittery among the city residents. The storm was raised by members of Repentance and Holiness Ministry associated with Prophet Dr. David Owuor who claimed the statue was ‘satanic’. The monument, erected on top of a rock along Mosque Road on a roundabout, has remained the subject matter in the lakeside city. Pastor Helen Ochieng of Repentance and Holiness Ministry in Kisumu who led worshippers in condemning the monument said the statue portrays a society worshiping an Idol and it should be brought down. Ochieng said as Christians they will ensure the monument is erected elsewhere not along the streets of Kisumu. he asked the authorities who approved the construction of the monument to rescind their decision as its presence will mean doom for Kisumu people. “Strange happenings in Kisumu are as a result of the presence of the monument. Recently we witnessed a stormy rainfall that caused massive destruction,” she said. However, Charjeet Hayer, Chairman Kisumu Siri Guru Sabha said the monument has been erected to commemorate 100 years of Sikh presence in Kisumu and has nothing to do with religion. “I appeal to our religious brothers not to view the monument as idolatry but a sign of peace,” he pleaded. Hayer said they are celebrating the arrival of their ancestors in Kisumu in the early 1901 and nobody should associate it with idolatry. Residents of Kisumu now fear passing along the street for bad omen. “Cyclists will have to follow longer routes only to avoid passing through that street. They say whenever they pass there, their business dwindles,” said John Omollo, a cyclist. Police officers had to use teargas canisters to thwart several attempts by the youths to burn and bring down the monument. Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga who stepped in to quell tension over the monument failed in his attempt to convince Kisumu residents that the monument erected by the Asian community is a sign of peace. Odinga visited Mosque Road on Saturday morning but received hostile reception from the irate members of the public who demanded the immediate removal of the monument. “Listen to me, this monument is for peace and not ‘satanic’ as some of you have been saying,” he said amid heckling from the crowd. He reminded the people of Kisumu not be pre-occupied with unnecessary things but talk about development. “We cannot waste time here explaining the meaning of this monument when I have very important matters I want to convey to you,” he said. Odinga then asked Kisumu county governor Jack Ranguma and the religious leaders to meet on Monday to deliberate over the issue. The former PM said if it has to be removed then due process must be followed since the county government approved its construction. Several times the former PM was shouted down as he defended the monument and cut short his speech. Governor Ranguma admitted that his office approved the construction of a water mountain but the contractors added other images that were not part of what was approved. He urged the Sikh community to adhere to the approved plan to avoid any misunderstanding. Ranguma on the other hand reminded all the residents that every citizen has a right to worship in their own way as provided in the constitution. “I want to request our religious leaders to spearhead the promotion of religious tolerance among the citizens of Kisumu and Kenya as a whole,” he said. photo of statue http://www.capitalfm.co.ke/news/2014/02/sikh-monument-irks-kisumu-preachers/

  9. The best way to stop this junk is not to give them a penny of our money - DO NOT download any of the MP3 songs from this movie, DO NOT buy any tickets to the DEOL family stage shows, DO NOT buy tickets to watch bollywood films at the cinema. And at any given opportunity when phoning in radio shows, on social media, talking to friends and family state as much as possible what a FLOP it is - this will make sure any <banned word filter activated> that wants to use Sikh / Punjabi images to make cheap wise cracks at our expense will never fund another film again.
  10. Please pass this information on to any sevadars wishing to run a Sikhi based UK local radio station, ideal opportunity to start off with a one months live broadcast trial. http://licensing.ofcom.org.uk/radio-broadcast-licensing/restricted-service-licences/ Anyone wishing to apply for a SRSL to provide a service during (or including) any dates from June to July 2014, is strongly encouraged to apply during the 'window' below. Ramadan falls within this period and, based on previous experience, we expect to receive a large number of applications to run radio stations at this time. As a result, in some locations in the UK, due to the high demand for SRSLs and the limited FM frequencies available, we expect to have to allocate licences by way of a draw. The large number of applications we expect to receive also makes it impractical to accept applications on the usual 'first come, first served' basis. Applicants are therefore invited to submit their application for a licence to provide a service during June and July 2014 during the period starting Monday 13 January 2014 and ending on Friday 17 January 2014 . Only a fully completed and signed application form, accompanied by a cheque for the application fee of £400, can be considered. (Please note any problems with payment of the application fee, such as bounced cheques, will mean an application will not be deemed eligible for award or the draw.) Applications for a service linked to a religious event (e.g. Ramadan) must include a letter of support as set out in our guidance notes. No changes to proposed transmitter sites will be permitted, other than where a change is necessary due to circumstances beyond the applicant's control. Applicants are reminded that multiple applications from the same group for the same area are not permitted, and any links to other groups also applying, however small, must be declared. This includes backroom involvement and technical advice. In places where only one application is received we may be able to offer a licence to that applicant. However, in areas where we receive a number of competing applications, we will draw lots to decide between them, as we have done in previous years. All licence awards are subject to the availability of suitable frequencies. Due to the general lack of suitable FM frequencies, particularly in major conurbations, groups in the same region may be competing for frequencies with one another, even though the areas they wish to cover do not overlap. This may apply to some applications which may appear to be in 'uncontested' areas. In such cases, we may have to put applications into a draw to decide between them. If SRSL applications for other purposes are received during this period but for overlapping dates, they may be considered alongside applications for broadcasting for the Ramadan period, and as a result may be included in any draw. We intend to hold the draw soon after 17 January 2014 and will then inform successful applicants when technical checks have verified the availability of a suitable frequency, and payment of the fee has cleared through our bank. A recording of the draw will be made available via our website. Applicants are reminded that SRSL application fees are not normally refundable. Thus, if an application is entered into the draw and is unsuccessful, the application fee will not be refunded. Similarly, the fee will not be refunded if an applicant subsequently decides to withdraw their application. Individual confirmation of applications received will not be given due to the large numbers involved. However, a full list of applications received will be published on our website shortly after 17 January 2013. It is strongly recommended that applications are sent by registered post or recorded delivery. The winning group in each area will be granted a licence for the purpose they applied for, subject to the application complying with the rules set out in our notes for applicants (see link below). Any application for a licence to provide a service during June and July 2014 that is received after the dates specified above, can still be considered for a licence, but only if it is for a broadcast in an area for which we have not already received an application, and subject to frequency availability. SRSL operators are reminded that if they wish to broadcast charity appeals they need to comply with the requirements of the Ofcom Broadcasting Code. The broadcaster needs to take reasonable steps to satisfy itself that the charity appeal organisation concerned can produce satisfactory evidence of charitable status, or, in the case of an emergency appeal, that a responsible public fund has been set up to deal with it. Further details can be found on our website: http://stakeholders.ofcom.org.uk/broadcasting/broadcast-codes/broadcast-code/commercial-references-radio/ We may ask broadcasters for further information about how much money is raised in any appeal, the recipient organisation and for evidence that all the funds raised have been used for charitable purposes. All short-term restricted service licences are issued at the discretion of Ofcom, subject to the conditions for their issue being met (as set out in the document 'Restricted Service Licences: Notes for Applicants'), and the availability of a suitable frequency. Application forms and Notes for Applicants can be downloaded from: http://licensing.ofcom.org.uk/radio-broadcast-licensing/restricted-service-licences/apply/
  11. Fantastic post - I 100% agree with you that we need movies, plays, songs, stories, poems about Sikhi to be written in English not just translated but dynamic, thought provoking and forward looking. Many of my "Punjabi" family and friends relate more to films about the holocaust and Jewish themes ie the boy in the striped pyjamas as they understand it easier than Punjabi. I would say the next entrepreneur that wants to do Seva to the Sikh community should either invest in a TV or Radio station that broadcasts at least in English 50% of the time - Sikhi would indeed be available to the whole world by making this progress.
  12. How dreadful knowledge of the truth can be when there's no help in the truth. Sophocles who's this list for? EGO EGO EGO it should be scrapped and discredited now - as some of these people are not even Sikhs more like anti-Sikhi and do everything they can not to associate with our struggle for JUSTICE or RECOGNITION - I know as one of these people is my very very close family and they think Sikhs should move on and become totally western and love money and power. http://www.thesikh100.com/

  14. Video: Teenager who attacked elderly man in Coventry street who has now died could face new charges 7 Nov 2013 11:01Sentencing of nineteen-year-old for assault delayed while tests are carried out to determine cause of death Attack on pensioner An 80-year-old man who was attacked by a young woman in Coventry city centre has died. The teenager responsible for assaulting Joginder Singh in Trinity Street could now face new charges. Mr Singh, aged 80, of Cannon Park, died on Sunday. He had been pushed to the ground in Trinity Street on August 10. The incident was caught on camera and shown on the internet. Coral Millerchip, 19, has already admitted a charge of assault, and will be sentenced after a separate matter has been concluded. That hearing is likely to be subject to significant delays now that Mr Singh has passed away. Det Chief Insp Matt Markham from Coventry CID, said: “Following the assault Mr Singh was readmitted to hospital and was being treated for a diagnosed condition and at this stage it is unclear if that is directly connected with the assault.“ Our thoughts remain with the family and those affected by Mr Singh’s death and we will continue to work with CPS and the coroner to establish the cause of death.“ Specialist family liaison police officers have been appointed to liaise with Mr Singh’s next of kin and we will continue to support the family at this sad time. ”Mr Singh was reported to be “fighting for his life” when Millerchip first appeared in Coventry Magistrates Court in August. During the hearing prosecutor Pamela Meinert said that Mr Singh was in a critical condition in hospital. She added that it was not known whether his condition was anything to do with the attack. Mr Singh was discharged from hospital after the attack but was later re-admitted for treatment of a previously diagnosed condition. A post-mortem examination of Mr Singh’s body, carried out on Monday, was inconclusive. Further tests are now being carried out to try and establish what caused his death. Detectives have notified the Crown Prosecution Service who will now make a decision on what further action will be taken. Police say any further court hearing is likely to be delayed until next year. Responding to Mr Singh’s death Coun Harjinder Singh Sehmi said: “It’s really bad news - an extremely sad day for the community. “She (Coral Millerchip) has already admitted that she attacked Mr Singh - there’s nothing more that can be said really. “Any decision about what happens now is in the hands of the Crown Prosecution Service and ultimately the courts. ”The attack was caught on camera with thousands of people viewing the video and commenting on what they saw." http://www.coventrytelegraph.net/news/coventry-news/teenager-who-attacked-elderly-sikh-6280750
  15. http://www.ealing.gov.uk/info/200033/councillors/569/councillor_complaintsEaling Council Councillor complaints How to complain about your councillorYour councillors are required to observe the council’s local code of conduct for councillors, as set out in the council constitution (Part 5 – codes and protocols). If you believe that a councillor has failed to observe the code of conduct, you may report them to the council’s Standards Committee, using the council’s standard form. You should only use this procedure where you believe that a councillor is in breach of the code of conduct. Once you have completed the form, you should return it to the council’s director of legal and democratic services at Ealing Council, Perceval House, 14-16 Uxbridge Road, Ealing, London. W5 2HL, email Members-Complaints@ealing.gov.uk. The council’s Standards Assessment Panel (which includes at least one independent member) will meet within 20 working days of receipt of your complaint, to consider whether or not and how your complaint will be dealt with. The panel will meet in private but you will be notified of their decision. Complaints about the service you have received from the council should be made via the council’s general complaints procedure.
  16. WE need to use strategic thinking against these numpties - I regularly read stuff that an "offended" viewer complained to Ofcom regarding Sikh Channel / Sangat TV and soon it will be Akaal channel, then inevitably they are fined and reprimanded - I have yet to see this "unbiased" Ofcom quango disallow a complaint made against Sikhs. Lets now complain to the bosses of these people once we find out who they are, in this case the Cllr members standards for the local authority. ONCE these people find a complaint against them that they have to defend THEY might think twice when waisting our media time, effort and money trying to answer their time waisting bibble babble. Sikhs START COMPLAINING NOW!
  17. http://dailysikhupdates.com/2013/10/18/3-sikh-professors-to-design-115cr-valmiki-temple-in-amritsar/ AMRITSAR: In its bid to boost the ‘secular’ poll campaign, Punjab government has roped in three keshdhari Sikhs ( who do not trim their hair or beard), working as professors at Guru Nanak Dev University in Amritsar to design the Rs 115-crore Valmiki temple in Amritsar The professors — Karamjit Singh Chahal, Sarabjot Singh Behl, and Rawal Singh Aulakh — work in the department of architecture in the Amritsar university. Desperate to strengthen its political fortunes ahead of the Lok Sabha polls, the Akali Dal-BJP government in the state has embarked on this move to construct the temple to woo the 22-lakh-strong Valmiki community, which makes for 40% of the scheduled caste (SC) population in Punjab. The Punjab government, on Friday, held a mega stone laying ceremony in Amritsar, that was attended by several renowned people including spiritual guru Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, yoga guru Baba Ramdev among others. Even though the trio dismiss the temple construction as a poll plank, they have been particular in attempting a design that is different from both a regular gurudwara and a temple. “We have not used the dome structure of gurudwara. We have also ruled out the concept of a shikhar (the usual square or pyramid-top structures) which most of temples have. Here the top of the temple is conical in nature. But it’s a privilege for us that we have designed the architecture of such an important shrine for the Valmiki communty,” Prof Chahal told TOI. The design was finalised over eight meetings held over six months with the chief minister, he added. The new temple would be, in addition, to the existing hut that marks the site where Sita gave birth to her two sons Lava and Kush and also still extant are Valmiki’s hut. The chief minister’s idea to “secularise” Amritsar’s voting population may not be misplaced as a section of historians in Punjab believe that Sikhs, with Bedi as their surname trace their descent from Kush and those with from Lava. With its height and area double the size of the Golden Temple in Amritsar, the highest temporal seat of Sikhs, situated just about 11km away, it is likely to emerge as the new destination for Hindu devotees. The Golden Temple is approximately 42 feet in height and 48 feet wide. The main design of the Valmiki temple has been conceived as a central sanctum sanctorum hall with dimension of 84feetx84feetX84feet. There is a five-tiered shikhar with a kalasha atop over the central shall comprises with two spiral staircases on each side bisecting first floor cantilevered gallery, Chahal said. The material for temple is largely Jaisalmer stone known to have been used in monuments, sculptures in Gujarat and Rajasthan. The central hall will be flanked by four porticos. Of them, two porticos are approached by two bridges (causeways) to allow devotees to walk to the hall. These two bridges are 60 and 100 feet respectively. The width of either bridge is the same: 29 feet and 8 inches. The temple would later be expanded into an 11-acre site which will also have a sangat hall, with capacity of 5,000 people, a museum and panorama to highlight the life and history of Valmiki. I would ideally want the outline of Punjab state on it but I know it is quite awkward to sketch and turns out to look like something completely different when I have seen people sketch it LOL. The one proposed by RayJay is indeed magnificent with a real meaning but too complicated for realty - I think.
