  1. He's not that gareeb. He acquired an old building in Coventry which he is planning to convert into a 50 room hotel. He was taken to court by the local authorities because he failed to apply for planning permission.
  2. Have you actually been to an EDL rally? I came across one on the High St in Kensington a few months ago ---- and Sikhs have nothing in common with that crowd. They are the same people who used to hurl racial abuse at football matches in the 80s and 90s. Muslims today, Sikhs tomorrow. You may know the quote: They came first for the Communists, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Communist. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a trade unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew. Then they came for me and by that time no one was left to speak up.
  3. That is one of the most appalling things I have seen. Whilst in Christianity, Church leaders wash the feet of the poor - we have supposed Gurus (masquerading as Sikhs) watching people drink the dirty water their feet have been in.
  4. Censored again today - twice!! I can see why people may be tempted to set up more than one profile. I have heard that tracking IP addresses is not a very sophisticated method of controlling freedom of information.

  5. Whilst, I am no expert, I have read a number of authoritative books about him and the insurgency in the 1980s.

Unfortunately, there is a tendency among some members of the Sikh community to get extremely annoyed if anyone attempts to vary from the Sikh nationalist view of him and discuss other opinions that exist.

  6. @ onlyfive - In your western twisted world where hell is the destination, your argument would be true. I always find it amusing when people benefiting from all the comforts the West offers (democracy, free education, good healthcare, freedom to worship, good infrastructure, free media) describe it as being twisted. If they find it so twisted, why don't they move back to the Punjab? In any case, the Pardhaan is typically elected by the sangat, so the Sangat can make their own judgement on what they believe is important - a full Sikh or a Sikh who has the ability to manage a Gurdwara and promote its role within the local community. A full Sikh may be the best person to do that - or may not be.
  7. Is it not the case that the Pardhaan is effectively the 'executive chairman' of the gurdwara committee and the Granthi is the spritual head. If this is the case, then I don't see that it is important that the Pardhaan should be of full sikhi saroop.
  8. My understanding was that the Sikh Federation UK had a policy of supporting an independent nation for the Sikhs. Does the Sikh Council also have a view on this, or will it policy on this be based on a democratic decision making process?
  9. Communism is an economic ideology where the State owns/controls the means of production, including Land, Labour and Capital. It has nothing to do with religion. The only reason communist countries have not allowed religious freedom is to prevent the development of alternative power bases that may challenge the State. The idea that Manpreet Badal is a communist is laughable. He is a scion of a family with enormous business interests in India and abroad.
  10. Isn't it a bit ironic that you are criticising social networking through leaving comments on an online forum?? Blaming those online services, is like blaming deep fat fryers for the obesity epidemic.
  11. In terms of censorship on this website - what is considered acceptable and what is not? I always assumed that a sign of strength is to be able to handle having your views challenged. There is no such thing as an absolute truth. Those people who try and prevent free speech are the real cowards - as they don't think their faith is strong enough to handle different interpretations.

  12. I can't figure out the censorship rules on this website

  13. I thought Islam was the only faith obsessed with how females dress? Can someone point out to me where the Gurus specified that clothing should not evolve with time?
  14. It is very difficult to live life completely shielded from practices you may not agree with. In some cases, people have little choice about where they work. Also, all our gurdwaras have bank accounts with banks that reinvest that money in all sorts of companies, including those that sell alcohol, tobacco, meat, etc. Where do you draw a line?
  15. Blackberry's reset automatcally - mine did.
  16. Is there any aspect of British law that you find is at odds with what is laid down in the Sri Guru Granth Sahib?
  17. Puting aside the fact that this is a ridiculous idea, who are this organisation - Gursewa Charitable Society? Are people based in the Greater Toronto area familiar with its work? The addresses given are residential properties. Could it just be a scam??
  18. There have been some interesting responses on this issue. My personal view is that people need to be pragmatic about such issues. A number of people have said that it is eating meat that is forbidden and that musical instruments and weapons have leather components (which is acceptable). That is a pragmatic position. However, I would also understand it if gurdwaras encouraged people not to wear leather clothing or carry leather bags into the darbar hall. I raised this issue to engage in a debate and to highlight how difficult it is to establish rules and guidance about something like animal products.
  19. Honestly, I don't understand the English you have written - especially the second sentence. Please try again.
  20. I have been there so talk from some (but little) experience. If you don't eat meat, don't gamble and don't chase women, I wouldn't bother going to Las Vegas. If you have already booked the flights, then leave town - drive to California and visit Palm Springs, Joshua Tree National Park.
  21. Given the fact that meat is forbidden in gurdwaras, should we not also ban the wearing of leather shoes and clothes to gurdwaras? Is it right for people to sit in front of the Guru Granth Sahib wearing cowhide on their person? It is the skin of an animal - surely, it is wrong to where it in the Guru's house. For footwear, there are many alternative options, such as rubber sandals, plastic shoes (e.g. Crocs) and trainers. I am interested in the views of my brothers and sisters.
  22. I assume you are also against the granthi using microphones and speakers during the paath to increase the range of his voice? That's also a modern adaptation. So now do you realise how ridiculous you sound?
  23. I have made a number of points on this topic supporting queuing for langar........... and whilst at the gurdwara this weekday morning, I realised that the only people serving langar were elderly people - of whom some were sitting on chairs (for support) as they served the passing sangat. I didn't spot many athletic, able young persons doing sewa. Surely, it would not be practical for these elderly people to be walking up and down the langar hall carrying balti's full of dal?
  24. Amazing timing! While walking along a busy shopping street in West London today, I came upon an EDL demonstration (close to the Israel Embassy). I stood by, had a good look at the crowd and listened to their speeches. Sikhs have nothing in common with the EDL and its views - and those Sikhs who claim to support the EDL's policies are clearly stupid (yes, genuinely stupid). It is a racist organisation dominated by the kind of crowd who used to cause problems at football matches - and shout 'Paki' at you in the street.
