  1. Another important decision has been taken regarding some Gurudwara management committees allowing chairs or benches to be installed for the elderly or differently abled inside Gurudwara premises.. Terming this practice as disrespect of Guru Granth Sahib, Jathedar Gurbachan Singh said, Gurudwara committees can install chairs benches outside the Gurudwara hall and not inside the hall where Guru Granth Sahib is installed.

Does this mean disabled people won't be able to sit in the darbar hall?

  2. Ok the Medford Gurdwara is 3.1 miles from Harvard. The Everett one is 3.8 miles. The Millis one is 30.6 miles and the Milford one is 37.9 miles.

No you won't be bugged. The Gurdwaras offer free food to homeless people around Thanksgiving which is next week. I am sure all robbers and muggers know who NOT to harass! :D

I meant as in picked for the scheme :)

But do the gurdware only give langar on set days? Or is it all day, every day?

  3. You'll be fine. I am in Massachusetts for 5 years plus now and never had any problems. Plus the Sikh community here is pretty neat. Once at a cafeteria I had a cop tell me "I've never come across a Sikh arrested for drunk driving or domestic abuse". Following the Wisconsin incident, we received much strong solidarity from ALL faith groups, Hindus, Muslims, Christians, Jews, you name it. In fact, the biggest and oldest church in downtown Boston invited us, and we had a huge divaan right in the church! We didn't have any serious issues even after the Boston blasts of April 2013.

We have 4 Gurdwaras already in the entire state and the 5th one is being built as I type.

Welcome in advance and hope you like snow! :D :p

Thank you veerji, sounds good. I love snow :D

Racism still exists in America. But don't worry, you are going to visit prestigious universities where educated people go to.

They will treat you well. If however, you feel discriminated you must contact United Sikhs and they will take care of the situation

There are gurdwaras which are about an hour away form Yale in CT

    • Connecticut Sikh Association 1610, West St Southington CT 06489 Ph 860-621-3015

    • Guru Ram Das Ashram 679, Ridge Rd, Middletown CT 06457 Ph 860-346-2311

Gurdwaras in MA which are about hour and a half away from Harvard

    Hope this helps

If I get picked I will definitely try to visit the gurdware close by. Thank you.

  4. Hi, I have an opportunity to go to America for 2 weeks and visit an American University (Harvard, Massachusetts and Yale). However, I don't know if I should go. The stories I hear of Sikhs in America do put me off. I know it probably doesn't happen a lot, but it is a bit off putting. Has anyone been to these universities, or live near them? How is the area and are there Sikhs in the area?

  5. Life of an outcast – Only a few will relate by Butch Singh

As I sit here in my jail cell knowing I will get out when I am an old man with white hair, I reminisce of the days our unit was tight and full of life. The days we had belief and confidence in our own people. We were naive, fresh and full of energy, from the streets we got into the Sikhi scene to make a difference to the onslaught that our community was facing. But first we had to wake people up on to what was happening, what a task that was init self as our community likes to bury their heads in the sand. When you try and wake people up instead of support a lot of Sikhs will claim that you are attention seeking (until <banned word filter activated> hits their doorstep then their tone changes).

I used to read Sikh history and two things that stood out were Granth and Panth. These are the 2 things that make a Sikhs mentality unique. They also gave all our past shaheeds their strength and passion. The Mistake us naive reformed Sikhs make is that we think that both Granth and Panth are still there. Obviously the Granth is still here as the Gurbani has not been changed and the power is the same. But the Panth has gone weak; there are so many divisions, views, and hidden agendas, that the Sikh community is only a community in theory on paper. When you read Sikh history and do not have much experience with modern day Sikhs you assume everyone is on the same Panthic vibe as the ancient Sikhs, but the deeper we got into it the more we found out, that not many had the pure Panthic spirit that was once there in our past. That same spirit which made our History Glorious was missing from the majority of nowadays Sikhs. If you look at our history it is not surprising we had so many warriors, it was the community spirit and hope that gave you a certain percentage of bravery to fight wars for your people. Nowadays we have so many victims and rarely ever any warriors, the media is full of incidents of Sikhs being victims, but very rarely do you see a heroic story. The truth is a lot of people have lost hope in the community due to bad experiences and tend to live as outkasts as they feel rejected and do their own thing. When most of the community is doing their own ting, there is a gap in information and help (community cohesion). When there is a gap like that it becomes a community’s weakness and produces uneducated and unaware Sikhs who become easy targets.

It is hard to shout out unity when the core of the so called Panth (if that even exists these days) is corrupted with haters, egos, hidden agendas, snakes, Fakes and backstabbers. Bad experiences lead you to become isolated from and bitter towards your own community. When you reach this stage you tend to lose hope in your community and live your life as an outkast who is weary and never opens their heart like they once did. When your own community hurts you and betrays you more than your enemies do, what do you expect to produce from such results? When I look around I see more and more outkasts that are losing hope in their community. There are too many issues within our own people that have broken our community spirit and are pushing people away from Panthic thinking. Some wounds are too hard to heal especially when the same wound has been opened up many times again and again.

I am not writing this as a negative article, or to push people away from the panth. I am relating the reality of how some people as such as I feel. It is sad that we have become outkasts but this is the times we live in.

    Your sincerely Butch Singh,

P.s Happy Bandi Chor Diwas, and May Sikhs free themselves from the doom and gloom that we cause to our own with our foul ways! This article is not some cry baby <banned word filter activated>, it is unfortunately how a lot of people from the streets feel! I have heard about Khalsa Aids work for the shaheeds families of 1984 that is a step in the right direction to heal the wounded spirit. We trust no worldly authority and are never blind to the flaws of worldly governments; all my real Singhs stay true.

  6. People say that the assassination caused a genocide on the streets of India. No, it did not. This wasn't a spontaneous act. People just didn't have kerosene and spare rubber tyres under the kitchen sink. They didn't just randomly have voters lists which contain Sikh names.

Reports (Nanavanti Comission) said white powder was found that set people on fire immediately. The powder cannot be identified; it has come from some Government agency. This was a pre-planned attack against our nation. Regardless of whether Indra was killed or not, a time would've come where they would've set out to attack Sikhs. They could use any excuse. A civilised country which claims to be the worlds largest democracy should not attack a whole religion just because 2 of its members happen to kill the PM. It cannot be justified at all. When Rajiv Gandhi was killed, why wasn't there a sudden outburst against Tamils? When Gandhi was killed by a Hindu extremist, no one began attacking Hindus in the streets.

And Hindus should not be blamed for the genocide. Many tried to save Sikhs and helped them after. This was a pre-planned by the government, not Hindu people. Our fight has always been with tyrannical governments, be it the Mughals or India.

If Indra wasn't assassianted, who knows what she would have done. A senior offical for the Indian Army released a book. Dr. Sangat Singh said Operation Shanti was planned. This was going to be a mass genocide against Sikhs all over Punjab. The UN investigation on the genocide needs to be done so we can find out if Op. Shanti was really planned.

Shaheed Bhai Beant Singh, Satwant Singh and Kehar Singh put our fallen pagh back on to our heads and reclaimed our honour.

  7. Yeah it's very common for drivers to take longer routes and pretend like they don't know where they are going. Learn some routes if you can and try to stop drivers ripping you off. As everyone else said kirpan might cause some trouble. Learn the word for vegetarian etc. so you can communicate about your diet. Rome is a really nice city though, have fun.

  8. I would say you report this guy to every Gurdwara Sahib in your province, and if legally possible, file a case of blasphemy against him, using the Hukamnama from Sri Akal Takht Sahib as the basis. Shame the jackass so that he either abandons alcohol, or allows the Singhs to bring Guru Sahib's paavan pavittar saroop to where full satkaar is ensured.

I don't know him in real life. And I guess he was hypothetically speaking, as in IF my wife drank. The problem I had was that he didn't find beadbi of SGGS bad. As Sikhs we should never accept the beadbi of our Guru.

  9. Guys a joke. He asked me "why are you even a Sikh?". When I said the rehat maryada is there to be followed. He's a "new-age" type and believes he can question things. He said the rehat maryada is just made up by old guys in India who have no right to tell him how to practise. He asked for proof from Guru's time. i also used the Massa Rangarh point on him and asked if he would support him. He said his house and Darbar Sahib are two different things (I don't see how, a Gurdwara is anywhere the SGGS is).

  10. We were talking about the hukamana issued about alcohol. He said it isn't up to them to make decisions for him. If he wanted to keep SGGS he would. He also said that he doesn't care if beadbi takes place. I showed him pics of beadbi and he said he doesn't care. If it was happenning at a gurdwara/dera, he would leave and go to another one. He is now demanding proof from historical documents that show beadbi cannot take place against SGGS and that you can't keep alcohol,
