In reality, only certain marginalized groups traditionally partook in dancing.

I remember when I was a kid, I asked my grandfather if people danced at his wedding reception. I wish you all could have seen the look he gave me.

And becoming a singer was considered shameful only a few generations ago.

Surrey Sikh temple president says he's helped the families of 16 young men who died from toxic drug overdose

The president of a Sikh temple in Surrey, B.C., says the already alarming rate of overdose deaths among South Asian international students is only getting worse.

In a recent two-week span, Narinder Singh Walia of the Gurdwara Dukh Nivaran Sahib said he learned of four overdose deaths in the community, all current or former international students.

He said in the past two years, the gurdwara has helped the families of 16 men who died of overdose — all under the age of 30, international students or in Canada on a work permit.

Walia said the gurdwara gets involved when families of the deceased reach out asking for help in arranging a cremation, funeral or sending a body back to India.

"Our gurdwara is contacted when something happens like this, somebody dies," he said. "Friends and their families contacted us because we announced we can take care of those dead bodies who have no relatives, who have no family here."

According to Walia, most of the deaths are incorrectly identified as a heart attack at first. But because the families give the gurdwara legal authority to deal with the deceased, he receives the coroners' reports that cite the official cause of death.

A 2019 study found in the Fraser Health region, which includes Surrey — about 35 kilometres southeast of Vancouver — those dying of toxic drugs were disproportionately young, male and South Asian. The authors used a name-based algorithm to identify who was South Asian. The B.C. Coroners Service does not track ethnicity in overdose deaths.

    An unspoken mental health crisis

But Baljit Kaur Lally, Metro Vancouver director for Khalsa Aid Canada, believes better data would not only be helpful, it could spark a badly needed wake-up call in the South Asian community where there is a great amount of stigma around drug use.

"It's almost like you need to do a shock-and-awe right now," she said. "[Drug use] is so prevalent. I was on the Downtown Eastside a few weeks ago when the weather was super bad and I saw a lot of young South Asian men."

Lally said in South Asian culture, males are put on a pedestal and receive special treatment when they're young. However, as soon as they turn 18, they face immense pressure to provide for their family.

Those expectations, believes Lally, are responsible for an unspoken mental health crisis among South Asian men. Many, she said, are turning to drugs to cope.

"When it comes to international students ... they're coming with that burden on their shoulders that says, hey, you are going to take care of the family even though you're 18 years old," said Lally.

"You have to go into this Western culture where you have to pay for your tuition, pay for housing, cook your own food and do your own laundry, where you never had to do that before. And then at the same time, you have to bring your family here and provide for them."

In an attempt to shine a light on the problem, Walia's gurdwara is reintroducing an information bulletin about the overdose crisis that will be distributed to people using the gurdwara's international student aid program and food bank.

He'd also like to see better overdose data specific to the South Asian population to fully illustrate the magnitude of the problem.

"I'm thinking there's so many other people that died of overdose who didn't contact us," he said. "You know, if we got our four in two weeks, it doesn't mean it's only four."

According to Walia, Gurdwara Dukh Nivaran Sahib has spent close to $200,000 helping the families of the deceased men.

Drunken man 'killed father with bottle of Bollinger champagne' after 86-year-old 'found his secret booze stash'

    19 January 2023, 19:56

Arjan Singh Vid, 86, was found on the floor of his son's bedroom with his "head caved in" surrounded by 100 bottles of champagne at the family home in Southgate, north London, in October 2021.

Deekan Singh Vig, who was naked at the time, allegedly said: "I killed my dad. I hit him over the head with a f***ing bloody bottle of Bollinger champagne.

"Oh shit. I killed my dad. He could have just died from a heart attack. I f***ing hit him with a bottle of f***ing Champagne...I hate French Champagne."

Deanna Heer KC told the court the victim had been hit repeatedly in the face and head with a full bottle of Champagne causing extensive injuries and almost immediate death.

She said the defendant accepted the killing and that his father had done nothing to justify the attack - but he did not mean to cause him really serious harm.

Vig had lived with his father, a qualified accountant, and mother Damanjit Vig, 85, in their four-bedroom detached home for about 40 years, the court was told.

On the evening of the killing, Vig's parents were watching TV when Mrs Vig heard vomiting noises from her son's room and he told her he had consumed half a bottle of whisky, jurors heard.

The last thing she saw was her husband comforting their son, the court heard.

She called her daughter because Vig appeared "out of control" and "drunk" and she in turn dialled 999, the prosecutor said.

An officer tried to pushed open the defendant's door and, looking through a gap, saw Mr Vig's head covered in blood, the court heard.

The defendant said he could not open the door, telling police: "You're too late. He's been dead for an hour."

The father of a newborn baby who police want to trace is a registered sex offender, US police records reveal.

The baby has been missing since their parents' car broke down and caught fire on the M61 near Bolton, on 5 January.

Since then, Constance "Toots" Marten and Mark Gordon appear to have been avoiding police, moving to Liverpool, Harwich, Colchester and London in quick succession.

Ms Marten, 35, is from a wealthy family but is estranged from them, say police.

Known to her friends as Toots, she grew up in a stately home in Dorset which was used as a set for the 1996 film of Jane Austen's Emma, starring Gwyneth Paltrow.

She had a privileged upbringing, attending a private school, university and drama school - but after meeting Gordon, 48, everything changed.

"At that point the affluent, normal, social aspects of Constance's life, they stop," Det Ch Insp Payne said.

"Then it is just Mark and Constance. They're estranged from family from what we can understand."

Gordon, whom she met in 2016, has been a registered sex offender in the UK since 2010, having been convicted in Florida of a rape he committed aged 14.

He served some 20 years in prison in the United States before being deported to Britain.

Constance Marten and Mark Gordon have been missing since their car broke down on the M61 in Greater Manchester

"Our top priority is ensuring the safety and wellbeing of the newborn baby," Det Supt Lewis Basford, of the Metropolitan Police, said.

"We have no evidence to suggest that either Constance or the baby have been assessed by medical professionals."

Police do not even know if the child was born prematurely or went full term.

Only a day or so old at the time of the car fire, they could have been born in the vehicle, officers say.

The couple appear to have left their home in Eltham, south-east London, in September, when Ms Marten would have shown the first signs of pregnancy, and have since led a nomadic lifestyle, police say.

After the fire, near Farnworth, at 18:30 GMT, they walked off the motorway embankment and flagged down a taxi, which took them to Liverpool.

From there, they took another taxi to the Essex port of Harwich but there is no sign of them trying to board a ferry.

And on 7 January, they took a taxi from Harwich to East Ham, spending hundreds of pounds in fares in a couple of days.

Taxi drivers report hearing the baby in their cabs.

The last time they were spotted was that day, on CCTV, near East Ham underground station.

    'Slush fund'

Thought to have lost their belongings in the fire, the couple are travelling using cash.

Ms Marten has inherited wealth, and officers say the couple are likely to have built up a "considerable slush fund" that could allow them to live off-grid for some time.

Whenever they are near CCTV cameras, they look away or cover their faces, police say.

Det Ch Insp Payne said the couple could be anywhere in the UK.

"We want to find this child - that is our overriding aim," he said.

A singing bus driver has become a hit on YouTube after releasing a heart-warming music video about working in the Black Country. Ranjit Singh Veer has racked up tens of thousands of views online after penning a Punjabi song about driving buses across the region.

The 59-year-old decided to put together a song so he could tell loved ones in India how he spends his days working at National Express West Midlands. The music video features many fellow Sikh bus drivers and touches on the friendships he has made with colleagues.

The song goes on to mention how people from different countries lovingly refer to him as 'Bhaji' - the Punjabi word for brother - and also greet him by saying 'Sat Sri Akaal'. Bhangra dancing and a dhol drum also feature in the feel-good hit.

Esteemed Cardiologist: ‘Stop This Rollout NOW’

Britain’s most influential cardiologist, who took two jabs, now calls for a halt in the rollout of the shot programme after spending nine months evaluating the data.

    Dr Joseph Mercola

    STORY AT-A-GLANCE

    • Esteemed U.K. cardiologist, Dr. Aseem Malhotra, has called on Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to halt the rollout of the COVID-19 mRNA shots in light of the “ongoing unnecessary harm that is devastating individuals and families”
    • He spent nine months analysing studies, and now he believes the program to inject people with a genetic experiment should be suspended immediately and has since joined a growing body of researchers, scientists and doctors who do not follow the mainstream COVID narrative
    • Malhotra reviewed the data with the chair of the British Medical Association (BMA). At the end of the conversation, the BMA chair commented, “I don’t think anybody has critically appraised the data as well as you have. Most of these people are getting their information on the vaccine from the BBC”
    • Despite the high number of people who have taken the jab, the number of deaths has continued to rise; U.K. data show roughly 80% of all cases, hospitalisations and deaths were in the vaccinated
    • Of the excess number of 2021 non-COVID deaths, many were from heart disease, which is a known effect of the mRNA genetic jab

Rash driver jailed for killing Sikh woman in UK

    PTI | London | Updated: 12-01-2023 15:54 IST | Created: 12-01-2023 15:54 IST

A23-year-old man has been jailed for six years in the UK for killing a Sikh woman in a crash caused by overspeeding on his part in a bid to impress his cousins, according to the media reports.

Hashim Aziz was jailed for six years by Wolverhampton Crown Court on Tuesday for killing 32-year-old Baljinder Kaur Moore in November last year, the BBC reported.

He was also banned from driving for seven years.

Aziz, of Highgate Drive, Walsall, initially tried to blame Moore for the incident during a police interview but later admitted to causing death by reckless driving.

Moore, a mother to a five-month-old boy, was driving a short distance to pick up her husband from his brother's home.

The convict, driving Audi A3 over three times the speed limit to impress his cousins, struck her when she was attempting to turn right at a junction.

Moore, disentangled by firefighters from the wreckage, died at the spot.

Forensic investigators estimated Aziz's speed at the time of the impact was 62mph (99.7km/h), the BBC reported.

If he had stuck to the speed limit Moore would have had time to complete the turn safely, police was quoted as saying.

Aziz pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving in November.

    Amrik Singh / Jalandhar

In Sikh history, December is called the 'month of sacrifices' as it was in this month that the family of the tenth Guru Gobind Singh was martyred.

The tenth Sikh Guru was fighting a war against the Mughals when his family – wife and four sons - attained martyrdom. Countless Muslim families supported Guru Gobind Singh in the war even at the risk of being targeted.

Their stories have been recorded with the utmost respect in the pages of Sikh history.

Some of the relics and symbols related to Guru Gobind Singh continue to be preserved by Muslim families with utmost devotion and purity.

    One of these is 'Gangasagar'.

Gangasagar is a priceless vessel made of an alloy of copper-brass and some other metals, that Guru Gobid Singh used for drinking milk and water etc. He always kept it with him.

Rai Aziz Ullah Khan holding Gangasagar

It’s said that he carried Gangasagar to the war and also in the final battle of his life with the Mughals.

His sons Sahibzade Baba Jujhar Singh and Baba Ajit Singh were martyred in the fort of Chamkaur.

Just before this, Guru Gobind Singh had left the fort of Anandpur Sahib and parted ways with his family on the banks of river Sarsa.Guru Gobind Singh reached Machhiwada fighting his way against the Mughal army where he met two Muslim brothers Navi Khan and Gani Khan. They offered him shelter.

The brothers served him with devotion and with utmost dignity.

The Khan brothers were horse traders. Before taking their leave, Guru Gobind Singh accorded them the status of Pir in recognition of their services.

Navi Khan and Ghani Khan were well aware of the Mughals’ power, yet they carried Guru Gobind Singh on their shoulders and took him safely out of Machhiwada with proper protocol. Some other Muslim notables also accompanied them.

    A portrait of Rai Kallan

At that time, the area was surrounded by the Mughal forces and their spies were keeping track of Guru Gobind Singh’s movements.

Guruji came face to face with the Mughal army at many places outside Machhiwada. At that time the saying "patta-patta sher ka Dushman ho gaya hai (Each leaf of the jungle has turned into the enemy of the Lion)" become commonplace. It was about the spies let loose by Mughal rulers against Guru Gobind Singh."

When Gobind Singh reached the village of Heran in the Muslim princely state of Raikot, he met a shepherd in the fields. His name was Nooran Mahi. Nooran Mahi had heard about the martyrdom of Gobind Singh’s sons and yet he had no idea of the man he was meeting.

Guru Gobind Singh was tired and he asked him for milk to drink. As a host, Mahi filled his Gangasagar with milk. Mahi sensed that he was meeting an extraordinary person and had no clue about his identity.

He went to Raikot and informed his boss Rai Kallan about his encounter. After listening to Nooran Mahi's words, Rai Kallan could make out that he had met Gobind Singh.

Throwing caution to the winds, he ran to the place where Mahi had met Gobind Singh and took him to his mansion. Again he served the Guru with utmost affection and devotion.

Gobind Singh told Rai Kallan that he got separated from his family at Sarsa river and he wanted to know about the whereabouts of his wife and sons.

He requested Rai Kallan to depute a reliable person to Sirhind to find out about them.

Rai sent Nooran Mahi for the secret mission. On return, he broke the sad news to Guruji that his wife and sons have been killed. Nooran Mahi’s name is mentioned in the pages of Sikh history. After Guru Gobind Singh decided to continue his journey and the war against the Mughal Empire.

Guru Gobind Singh Rai was so pleased with Kallan's service and spirit that he gifted his favorite jug 'Gangasagar' to him.

He also gifted him some other items that he used. Among the gifts was a Peedi (a low-lying table) that has been used by generations in Rai Kallan's family to place the Holy Quran for recitation.

Raikot and its adjacent Talwandi Rai were Muslim-majority states and had Muslim administrators.

To commemorate the visit of Guru Gobind Singh to Raikot, the Muslims and Sikhs of Raikot and Talwandi built the historic Gurudwara 'Rahaliana Sahib'.

Every day thousands of Sikhs, Hindus, and Muslims pay obeisance there. This place stands as testimony to unity and harmony among Indians.

Also, Guru Gobind Singhji's favorite jug, or Surahi 'Gangasagar' is still being handled with full devotion and protection by a Muslim family. At present, the head of the family is Rai Aziz Ullah Khan, who was born n Pakistan and is now settled in Surry, Canada.

Rai Aziz Khan represents the ninth generation of the Rai Kallan family. He was 27 years old when he was told about Gangasagar and other relics of Guru Gobind Singh.

Rai Aziz Ullah Khan inherited this jug along with other things.

When he left Pakistan, he carried all these valuables with him with the full procedure. He had kept these things in the locker of a bank.

In 1999, on the occasion of Baisakhi, an international-level function was organized at Anandpur Sahib to commemorate 300 years of the martyrdom of the family of Guru Gobind Singh, Rai Aziz brought 'Gangasagar' and other relics for the darshan of the devotees.

Cancer vaccine trials could start in England by autumn

Government deal with BioNTech paves way for early access to trials of personalised mRNA therapies

Trials of personalised cancer vaccines in England are to be speeded up after a government deal with a firm behind one of the major Covid jabs.

The UK health secretary, Steve Barclay, is to sign a memorandum of understanding with BioNTech on Friday to “ensure the best possible treatments are available as soon as possible” for cancer.

The agreement means cancer patients in England will get early access to trials exploring mRNA therapies, such as cancer vaccines, possibly from as early as autumn.

MRNA treatments are tailor-made for the individual and provide immune systems with genetic code from the specific cancer so it can attack only the tumour, whereas chemotherapy targets lots of different cells as well as the cancer.

BioNTech worked with Pfizer to develop the widely used mRNA vaccination against Covid, and its partnership with the UK government could deliver 10,000 doses of personalised therapies to UK patients by 2030 through a new research and development hub.

Barclay said: “Once cancer is detected, we need to ensure the best possible treatments are available as soon as possible, including for breast, lung and pancreatic cancer.

“BioNTech helped lead the world on a Covid-19 vaccine and they share our commitment to scientific advancement, innovation and cutting-edge scientific technology, making them perfect partners for a deal to work together on cancer vaccines.”

He added: “This partnership will mean that, from as early as September, our patients will be among the first to participate in trials and tests to provide targeted, personalised and precision treatments using transformative new therapies to both treat the existing cancer and help stop it returning.”

Prof Uğur Şahin, the chief executive and co-founder of BioNTech, said: “The UK successfully delivered Covid-19 vaccines so quickly because the National Health Service, academia, the regulator and the private sector worked together in an exemplary way.

“This agreement is a result of the lessons learned from the Covid-19 pandemic. Drug development can be accelerated without cutting corners if everyone works seamlessly together towards the same goal. Today’s agreement shows we are committed to do the same for cancer patients.”
