  7. WAHEGURUJIKAKHALSAWAHEGURUJIKIFATEH Akhand Jaap was truly amazing!!! Guru Maharaaj Ji's Kirpa to the max!
  8. But the difference between Calgary and edmonton is that although edmonton may have alot of punjabi people, it has VERY few young Amritdhari Gursikhs. i always wondered why it is like that, since it is so close to calgary, which has ALOT of Gursikhs. I know somwe people from edmonton and they always telling me how there are hardly any youth there who keep hair/ have taken Amrit. But in Calgary...its a whole different story!!!
  9. Calgary Sangat is Amazing!!! I would suggest you move somewhere near the Gurudwara. Martindale, saddleridge and areas surrounding them. There are several new neighborhoods around the Gurudwara, and housing in calgary is VERY cheap compared to other large cities. You get a new house made for about $250, 000 - $300,00, and the same house would cost almost $500,000 in places like surrey.
  10. WAHEGURUJIKKAKHALSAWAHEGURUJIKIFATEH I am thinking about buying a camcorder, and was wondering if Sangat knew which company makes the best cameras (while still being affordable). Also, these days what is the best type of Camera to get in regards to type of film used/or disc used. I want something not too pricey (about $700 canadian, give or take a few hundered). the biggest thing is image quality and automatic stabalization. Thank You .
  11. WAHEGURUJIKAKHALSAWAHEGURUJIKIFATEH I was wondering if anyone knew the name of the font that includes a Khanda as one it's letters. (ex- you hit a key and a Khnada symbol appears)...thank you.
  12. WAHEGURUJIKAKHALSAWAHEGURUJIKIFATEH i think that it is a combination of both 'W' and 'V'. Its sort of like 'Wvaheguru'. Its not a sharp 'V' sound, but sort of begins with a W and V sound together. I may be wrong, so i apologize before hand.
  13. WAHEGURUJIKAKHALSAWAHEGURUJIKIFATEH I just finished watching a program called 'Primetime', which talked about what a women should do if she is attacked. Here are some tips that are very useful and effective. SCENARIO 1: IN THE ELEVATOR -stand close to buttons. If someone attacks, push all the buttons so the elevator will stop on all floors. Hit alarm button if possible, or try to knock off the emergency phone. SCENARIO 2: UNDERGROUND PARKING GARAGE -always look around, make yourself aware of surroundings -If someone tries to grab you, use your shopping cart as a sheild (stay behind it, and turn it to stay behind it), and scream loudly. -If you see a big vehicle like a truck, SUV, van etc... get under it. Chances are the guy won't waste time trying to get you out...and make sure you scream loudly. SCENARIO 3: IN A CAR If a guy somehow gets you into his car, try to jump into the back seat. Then you can attack him from behind, scratch face, and COVER HIS EYES, so that he will be forced to stop the car, and then jump out! If you can't get into the back seat, jump in his lap, and start honking the horn, or turn the ignition key off, and then try to jump out. SCENARIO 4: IF A DRIVER PULLS OUT A GUN AND TELLS YOU TO GET IN CAR -If you are walking down the street, and some guy pulls up in a car, and points a gun at you telling you to get into the car...DO NOT GET IN!...run away!!! make sure you run backwards, towards the back of the car...never run forward. The reason for this is, if you run back, he will have to put the car in reverse, and drive backwards to chase you (which he probabaly won't do) - chances are that he will not shoot you through his back window while you run away because it will cause too much attention. These are some useful tips, but it is still essential for all Sikhs to learn how to fight (with and without weapons). It builds confidence, and instead of panicking, you react to what you have been practicing. Although these scenarios were set for women, they are just as useful for men. 14. If you are here for october 31st, check out the Shaheedi Smagam in Abbotsford. http://www.sikhsangat.com/index.php?showtopic=14233
  15. WAHEGURUJIKAKHALSAWAHEGURUJIKIFATEH GO TO DASMESH DARBAR!!! There is Kirtan happeing there ALL DAY LONG, instead of morning, noon, and evening programs...LOT'S of Sangat. The reason i would suggest Dasmesh Darbar or Singh Sabha is because they follow the Akal Takht Hukamnama about eating Langar on the ground. Ross Street, Nanaksar, Guru Nanak Sikh Temple, and Akali Singh DO NOT follow this Hukamnama, and have openly decided to against the Akal Takht Hukamnama, and have Langar served on tables and chairs, where people eat with shoes on. If you don't have much time, go to Dasmesh Darbar (12885 85th Ave), because there is Kirtan, Katha, and Dhadi going on in the Darbar non-stop from about 4:30am upto about 9pm. (and if you are there in the evening, check out Sukh-Assan Seva...it's pretty cool how theres so much Sangat there on any given night, and the Singhs are banging on the Dholki, and kids are doing Jakarays etc...) I know from personal experience that some of the other Gurudwaras only have like 5-10 people in Sangat max at Sukh-Assan time. but I must say one thing: EVERY GURUDWARA IS WONDERFUL BECAUSE YOU CAN HAVE DARSHAN OF GURU MAHARAJ!!! WAHEGURUJIKAKHALSAWAHEGURUJIKIFATEH
  16. Waheguroo Jee Ka Khalsa! Waheguroo Jee Kee Fateh!! There is going to be a huge smagam this year at the Gurmat Center in Abbotsford on October 31st, 2005 beginning at 5:00 pm. This Smagam is dedicated to the Gursikhs who sacrificed their lives for the Sikh faith. As you already know, October 31st 1984 is the day when Bhai Satwant Singh & Bhai Beant Singh decided to bring justice to those responsible for attacking Sri Harimander Sahib in June of 1984. In their memory, this Smagam will be held every year to bring awareness to the community about what exactly happened in June of 1984, and what followed in the monthes/years to come. The night will be full of many fun and exciting activities for young and old alike. There will be a Kirtan and Kavishree program (all done by youth) , followed by a documentary video about what happened in 1984. After this, in the gym there will be a live skit performed with a Sikhi message, followed by a Gatka demonstration. There is also going to be many draws and prizes given out, jumping castle, giant slide, popcorn, cotton candy, and also a Bana competition, where youth are encouraged to dress up in full Guru Ji's Bana (Chola, Dumalla, Shastars etc...) The night will end with pizza, candy, and a professional fireworks display. This is an open invitation for ALL to please come out to this event. It is important for the youth to have awareness of the sacrifices that people have made for their faith. It will be a night full of fun and excitment for all ages, and also an opportunity to learn about our history at the same time. Hope to see everyone there!!! Address: 31987 TOWNSHIPLINE RD., ABBOTSFORD BC. 604-855-0020 OR 604-825-0965 Dierections from Surrey (highway 1) - take Mount Lehman Exit off of Highway 1, and turn left onto Mt. 17. WAHGURU JI KA KHALSA WAHGURU JI KI FATEH It's nice to see that you are thinking about following Religion. Check out these Katha (lectures) which are all in english. I especially love the Katha of Bhai Parminder Singh Ji, who is an amazing Gursikh, and left his physical body last year as a result of a car accident. There are 3 catgories: 'History', 'general' , and 'conferences'...'History' tell stories about Guru Ji's, 'General' is based on spirituality/philosophy of Sikhism, and conferences are lectures done at universities. Here's the link: http://gurmatstudies.com/kathact.htm Good luck in your search for the Truth..."Ask, and you shall receive"
  18. WAHEGURU JI KA KHALSA WAHEGURU JI KI FATEH I heard that the video is gonna be on the net in about 1 week! Some Singhs are working on a new website, which is almost complete, and the video will debut on that site.
  19. WAHEGURUJIKAKHALSAWAHEGURUJIKIFATEH I have seen this movie, and it has some very good points in it. It encourages kids to be proud to be Sikhs and keep hair...BUT... The movie is VERY VERY one-sided. In the whole movie they say "SIKH BOYS MUST WEAR A KARA, AND KEEP KES"...but when it comes to girls...they are wearing all sorts of jewellery and earrings and decked out in gold, and not one woman in the movie has her head covered. The grandma in the movie teaches the kids about Sikhism but she is very hypocritical. She tells Sunny that Sikhs must keep their heads covered to keep their hair clean, yet she never has her head covered in the whole movie (exept the Gurudwara scene). The grandma gives Sunny's sister some bangles to wear, and when Sunny says, "where are my my bangels?"...the grandma says, "Sikh boys don't wear Bangles, Sikh boys wear Karas"...so girls don't have to wear Karas? (and they don't in the movie, including the Grandma and mom, who have on plenty of gold bangles instead) Also in the movie they call Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji a 'holy book', which I can't believe people still do. And Sunny's dad doesn't have a long flowing beard, its either trimmed or tied up. The movie also says that Guru Gobind Singh Ji never cut off the heads of the Panj Piaray in 1699, and that He was only testing His Gursikhs. The biggest thing that bothered me about the movie was how there is no reference to a 'Sikh' woman wearing a Kara, or keeping Kes, or taking Amrit, yet if a Sikh boy does not do these things, then according to the movie -"They are not Sikhs". Overall, i would say the movie is good...BUT...when showing it to kids, you must pause it on several parts and explain to them some of the information that is just plain wrong. I hate to sound so negative, but a movie that is targeted to kids is going to basically teach them about Sikhism. The info should be correct. But i do applaud the effort of the people who made this film, as kids do learn about being brave and keeping their hair. WAHEGURUJIKAKHALSAWAHEGURUJIKIFATEH
  20. WAHEGURUJIKIKAKHALSAWAHEGURUJIKIFATEH I believe that the live braodcast begins at around 4:00 - 4:30 am (Pacific time) with Nitnem. After that Kirtan/Katha/Dhadhi is done all day long non-stop until about 9:30 pm, and then the radio plays pre-recorded Kirtan until 4:00am, and then it all starts over again. WAHEGURUJIKIKAKHALSAWAHEGURUJIKIFATEH
  21. WAHEGURUJIKAKHALSAWAHEGURUJIKIFATEH Guru Nanak Dev Ji is GURU. WAHEGURUJIKAKHALSAWAHEGURUJIKIFATEH
  22. WAHEGURUJIKAKHALSAWAHEGURUJIKIFATEH Yes, Sohila Sahib is a Nitnem Bani.
  23. WAHEGURUJIKAKHALSAWAHEGURUJIKIFATEH This DVD is available in Surrey BC, at AMITOJ...right next door to Dasmesh Darbar. It's like 8 hours long!!! Its starts with basic Muharni, and then gets into the correct pronounciation of the 7 Nitnem Banis, and there are also many great facts and info on the DVD. I would recommend it to anyone. And its not for profit or anything, since the DVD only costs $5 Canadian, $3 US. WAHEGURUJIKAKHALSAWAHEGURUJIKIFATEH
