Great post, at the very least a digital copy should be made and released to the Sangat. The most important item on our site is a Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Saroop from 1714, freely available to all. Unfortunately, we have no history (and would appreciate any information) http://www.discoversikhism.com/sikh_library/gurbani/puratan_sri_guru_granth_sahib_da_saroop_1714.html Where is the strategy in preserving Sikh heritage? UK Sikh organizations need to do more.
Thank you, Here's the documentary on the Sikh reference library. Very sad.
We understand there was a program on Sangat channel in the last 30 mins covering this subject, does anyone have a copy?
Thanks for the feedback. :smile2: We've uploaded a book that might be of interest to everyone. This book, written by Canadian journalists, is banned in India. Soft Target - How the Indian Intelligence Service Penetrated Canada http://www.discoversikhism.com/sikh_library/english/soft_target.html The authors define Soft Target as "an espionage term used for any country, institution or group of people very easy to penetrate and manipulate for subversive purposes" and argue that the Canadian Sikh community was a "Soft Target" of a covert operation by the Indian government during the 1980s. The Indian intelligence agencies not only penetrated the Sikh community in order to discredit them world wide and halt the momentum of the demand of an independent Sikhs state, but also manipulated the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS). We guess the Indians worked out force doesn't work with Sikhs, so now they use subversion.
Apart from forums, the social media and websites are also monitored. (However, you could argue any responsible government would do this.) Infiltrations in panth? yes, this was carried out a long time ago. One of the ploy's used is to send in a volunteer or offer funds... Sikhi has threatened the status quo since 1469. Those that have a vested interest in maintaining the status quo will always see Sikhs as a threat. Unfortunately, the misguided anti-Sikh mentality has resulted in Crimes against Humanity and Genocide of Sikhs. Nations like the UK sold their moral values and participated in action (1984) against Sikhs and rather than use surveillance to protect, it was used to deliberately kill innocents. Gursikhs in particular have been and were targeted.
Today PM Modi visited Sri Harmandir Sahib. Modi lowered himself to his hands and knees to bow three times before Dhan Dhan Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaj. Badal stood and watched...
Article 25 of the Indian Constitution allows Sikhs "the wearing and carrying of kirpans". Do you know of any places in India where this right is abused and therefore illegal? If so, list them here and when the visit took place.
There are many references to betel nuts [paan] in Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. _________________________________________________________________________________ The Scourge of the Betel Nut [Paan] It is used by almost a tenth of the world's population. It gives people a buzz equivalent to six cups of coffee and is used variously as a symbol of love, marriage and a cure for indigestion and impotence. But it is also leading tens of thousands to an early grave. The culprit? The humble betel nut. Found across Asia, these nuts are harvested from the Areca palm and are chewed for their warming glow and stimulating properties. Such is its effectiveness, that alongside nicotine, alcohol and caffeine, betel nuts are believed to be one of the most popular mind-altering substances in the world. Although used by women and children, the nuts are especially popular among working-age men, who chew to stay awake through long hours of driving, fishing or working on construction sites. But the short-lived benefits come at a terrible cost. High rates of oral cancer are destroying the lives of many who buy betel nuts, often decades after their first taste. Now in Taiwan, where the nuts are affectionately known as 'Taiwan's chewing gum', the government is taking action to curb this centuries-old habit and reduce the thousands of lives lost each year. Dangerous combination Regular betel nut chewers stand out from the crowd with their red-stained lips and teeth The betel nut is a key part of many Asian cultures and can be consumed dried, fresh or wrapped up in a package known as a quid. Although the exact preparation varies across countries and cultures, the quid is usually a mixture of slaked lime, a betel leaf and flavourings such as cardamom, cinnamon and tobacco. Worryingly, the International Agency for Research on Cancer lists each ingredient, with the exception of cardamom and cinnamon, as a known carcinogen - or cancer-causing agent. The slaked lime is seen as a particular problem as it causes hundreds of tiny abrasions to form in the mouth. This is thought to be a possible entry point for many of the cancer-causing chemicals. "About half of the men here still don't know that betel nuts can cause oral cancer," says Prof Hahn Liang-jiunn, an oral cancer specialist at the National Taiwan University Hospital. "[This is despite] Taiwan's incidence or mortality rates for oral cancer ranking among the top two or three in the world." 'I started chewing because everyone else did' Qui Zhen-huang now warns others about the dangers of betel nuts. Like most people, Qiu Zhen-huang, 54, was completely unaware of the risks. A former gravel company worker, he chewed for ten years. Twenty years after quitting, he developed the disease. "I started chewing betel nut because everyone at work did it," says Mr Qiu. "We shared it with each other to build good relations." Three years ago, a small hole developed in his left cheek and in just three months, the tumour grew to the size of a golf ball and completely changed his life. "Whatever I ate flowed out. I had a gauze pad over it. It hurt," he said. "It affected me a lot. I was so ashamed I avoided going out." Each year, 5,400 Taiwanese men like Mr Qiu are diagnosed with oral cancer or pre-cancerous lesions and an estimated 80 to 90% of those also chew betel nuts. An early symptom includes white or red lesions inside the mouth, but this can rapidly progress to grotesque flesh-eating tumours. Unlike other cancers, these are difficult to hide, leaving sufferers physically and psychologically devastated. "It's miserable for them," says Prof Hahn. "Sometimes, even after surgery, they still can't perform basic functions, including expressing emotions through their face because the lower jaw also has to be cut depending on the scale of the cancer." Tackling the scourge The Taiwanese government is offering subsidies in return for cutting down betel nut palms Luckily for Qiu Zhen-huang, his cancer was treated and his cheek reconstructed. But the Taiwanese government is helping people catch the disease much sooner by providing around one million free screenings and funding programs to help people quit betel nuts for good. In 2013, these measures helped cut the usage rate among men by nearly half. The government is also trying to reduce the domestic supply of betel nuts by offering subsidies to farmers to cut down their trees and plant alternative crops. Other countries such as India and Thailand have also launched campaigns to discourage betel nut chewing. But there is still a way to go. At a recent presentation to elementary school children of fishing industry workers, nearly all raised their hands when asked whether their parents or relatives chewed betel nuts. And as the cancer can take up to 20 years to appear, the current changes will have come too late for many people - a fact that Mr Qiu keeps close to his heart. "I'm one of the luckier ones."
Sgpc To Take Up Key Sikh Issues During Pm Modi’S Amritsar VisitAmritsar, March 21 With Prime Minister Narendra Modi all set to visit the holy city on Monday, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) is gearing up to take up a host of issues related to the Sikh community with him. Sources said these issues included racist attacks on the Sikhs in countries such as the USA. The SGPC would urge the PM to utilise the government’s diplomatic channels with the countries concerned, so that the Sikhs don’t face problems emerging out of mistaken identity and security barriers. Besides, it would also take up the issue of ban on wearing turban and ‘kirpan’ in countries like France. Sources said the SGPC would also urge Modi to look into its demand for the Kartarpur Sahib Corridor connecting Dera Baba Nanak in Gurdaspur with the historic Kartarpur Sahib Gurdwara in Pakistan. The gurdwara holds great significance for Sikhs as Guru Nanak Dev spent the last 18 years of his life there. The distance between Dera Baba Nanak and Kartarpur Sahib is a meagre 3 km and Sikhs have for long been demanding unrestricted access to the historic shrine through a visa-free corridor connecting the two places. The SGPC would also request the government to facilitate a Pakistan visa centre in Amritsar. The move would be of great help to the Sikhs visiting historic shrines in the neighbouring country, as currently they get visa for Pakistan from New Delhi. Issues at hand Problems faced by Sikhs due to hate crimes and ban on religious gears in foreign countries Demand for visa-free corridor connecting Dera Baba Nanak in Gurdaspur and Kartarpur Sahib Gurdwara in Pakistan Request for a visa centre for Pakistan in Amritsar Need for a subsidised LPG supply for ‘langar’ facility at the Golden Temple Complex Youth Akali Dal leader writes to Modi Jalandhar: Two days ahead of PM Narendra Modi’s visit to the state, Youth Akali Dal vice-president JS Garhdiwala has written to him and expressed resentment over reduction of Rs32,104 crore in the schemes meant for the SC/ST community across the country. As the post-matric scholarship meant for SC/ST students was one of the key schemes to be funded by this budget, the reduction in allocation would affect the progress of these communities, he stated. — TNS
The Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Management Committee (DSGMC) will host a two-day festival commemorating the 232nd anniversary of the establishment of Khalsa Panth rule, scheduled for March 21 and 22. DSGMC president Manjit Singh said the festival is aimed at highlighting the "golden historic moment" of the Khalsa Panth when Sikhs ruled the country from New Delhi. The event marks the time when Sikh warrior Sardar Baghel Singh hoisted the Kesri Nishan Sahib of the Khalsa Panth at the Red Fort on March 11, 1783, after defeating then Mughal emperor Shah Alam and crowning Jassa Singh Ahluwalia as the new emperor in the Diwan-e-Aam. Manjit Singh said that the event will be organised at a mega level to highlight this "historic event", which does not find significant mention in modern Indian history. "This is second time that the Delhi Fateh Divas is being organised by DSGMC, in which around one lakh people of various religions will take part and efforts are being made to make it an annual event," Manjit Singh said. "Five head priests will lead the Jarnaili march victory processions from ancient Hanuman Mandir to Red Fort on March 22," Manjit Singh said, adding that Sikh organisations from across the globe will be represented in the event. Kirtan darbar will be organised on first day of Fateh Diwas and on the second day Gataka, martial arts of the Sikhs will be performed.
Struggle to continue until the release of Sikh Detainees, says Bapu Surat Singh’s son Ludhiana, Punjab: Ravinderjit Singh Gogi, son of fasting Sikh activist Bapu Surat Singh Khalsa reprotedly stated that the struggle for the permanent release of Sikh political prisoners would continue until their release. He was presented in the Court by the Police with his hands cuffed in chains on March 19. The authorities deferred the next debate in the case to April 1st. It is notable that handcuffing a person charged under 107/151 seems anomalous. Ravinderjit Singh Gogy reportedly said that he would continue fighting the struggle initiated by his father for the release of Sikh Detainees until it becomes fruitful. He appealed the Sikh masses to unite on a common platform to ensure the success of the struggle. It may be recalled that Ravinderjit Singh was arrested taken into custody Punjab Police on February 26 and was sent to Ludhiana Jail levelling false charges against him. Meanwhile, Ravinder Jit Singh's father; Bapu Surat Singh Khalsa, remains under police custody at Civil Hospital of Ludhiana where he is being force-fed by the doctors.
India getting desperate in countering impact of Sikh Manifesto: Sikh Federation UK London, UK: The Indian authorities, Sikhs in the UK and abroad who prop up the Indian state and Sikhs who to date have lacked the forethought to contribute and back the Sikh Manifesto just do not know how to respond to the huge impact it is having. The Sikh Manifesto is resulting in UK politicians from all political parties not only singing the praises of the Sikhs, but also making specific commitments linked to the demands in the Sikh Manifesto. Sikh Federation launch campaign manifesto ahead of general election [File Photo] The latest contribution regarding the proposal that the British Army will raise a Sikh regiment has come from Shankar Roychowdhury, the former Chief of Army Staff of the Indian Army, and former member of the Indian Parliament as they believe UK Ministers are serious about this proposal. He has written: ‘The aim of the British government in announcing the proposal of creating a Sikh Regiment in the British Army at this juncture could be two-fold.’ ’Firstly, the British Army is trying to make up for the manpower shortage it has been facing by mobilising recruits from a distinctive British ethnic minority with a historic tradition of soldiering for the British Empire.’ ‘Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, the British government wants to use the new regiment to tap into the political potential of British Sikh votebank ahead of the next British general elections, imminent in 2015.’ The former Indian Army Chief has further stated: ‘India has some concerns about the Sikh Regiment of the British Army.’ ‘If the British Sikh Regiment is created, it will be incumbent for the British government to remain alert to the possibilities of Khalistani sympathisers attempting to contact its ranks. The potential for mischief does exist here, and the Indian and British governments will have to devise methods to neutralise it.’ Bhai Amrik Singh, the Chair of the Sikh Federation (UK) said: ‘It is inappropriate for the former Indian Army Chief to raise such concerns. The British Sikh Regiment has nothing to do with India as he himself has admitted the regiment would be made up of ‘British Sikhs’ – all British citizens and permanent residents in the UK. What he has said is totally unacceptable.’ ‘What he has said about possible links between the rank and file of the British Sikh Regiment and Sikhs who may be demanding an independent Sikh homeland amounts to nothing more than scaremongering. He needs to appreciate in Britain and other countries around the world it is not illegal to demand and call for independence and a separate homeland or self determination i.e. Scotland, as long as this is done through a peaceful and democratic framework.’
Mosques not religious place, can be destroyed any time: BJP leader Subramanian Swamy BJP leader Subramanian Swamy has sparked off a massive controversy by saying that mosque is not a religious place but is merely a building that can be demolished any time. Swamy made these controversial statements in a programme at Guwahati. Swamy's comments have attracted condemnation from all political parties. Even Assam BJP has disassociated themselves from Swamy's remark. According to HT, Swamy gave the “example” of mosques demolished for construction of roads in Saudi Arabia. The controversial leader said, “A mosque is not a religious place. It is just a building. It can be demolished any time. If anyone disagrees with me on this, I am ready to have a debate on the issue. I got this information from people of Saudi Arabia". He stoked another controversy by claiming all Indian Muslims were Hindus. He repeated the controversial comments again on Saturday. Subramanian Swamy [File Photo] Police have now registered a case registered an FIR under IPC sections 120 (B) [criminal conspiracy] and 153 (A) [promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion] against Swamy following a formal complaint by Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS). KMSS has urged Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi to ban Swamy's entry into the state. HT has quoted Tarun Gogoi as saying, “BJP will have to pay a heavy price for hurting Assamese sentiments”. The state BJP is in backfoot as Swamy' comments have evoked sharp reaction from all quarters. Assam BJP president Siddhartha Bhattacharyya has branded Swamy's comment as his personal opinion. He said that they will send the footage to Central leadership. Several minority organisations have also demanded strict action against Swamy. It's not the first time Swamy has made a controversial statement though.

Bhaji, you have made an important point. Some Gurdwara masands are continuing to break maryada for short term profit. However, there is a legal issue that needs to be considered. Is money being obtained by false pretense or fraud? therefore illegal as well as illegitimate? http://www.discoversikhism.com/sikh_news/sikh_weddings.html "The elements of false pretenses are: (1) a false representation (2) of a material past or existing fact (3) which the person making the representation knows is false (4) made for the purpose of causing (5) and which does cause (6) the victim to pass title (7) to his property." "In law, fraud is deliberate deception to secure unfair or unlawful gain. Fraud is both a civil wrong and a criminal wrong. The purpose of fraud may be monetary gain or other benefits, such as obtaining a drivers license by way of false statements."

A leading German historian said Mahatma Gandhi was "one of the greatest friends of Nazi Germany" because the Indian activist and the Third Reich shared a shared a common enemy in Britain. Gandhi's quote on the Children Of Israel "the Jews should have offered themselves to the butcher's knife. They should have thrown themselves into the sea from cliffs." Gandhi insisted on referring to Sikhs as "hindus" and said "I read your Granth Sahib. But I do not do so to please you. Nor shall I seek your permission to do so. But the Guru has not said anywhere that you must grow your beards, carry kirpans (swords) and so on". Gandhi attacked Gurmukhi. In a letter to a friend, Amrit Kaur, he wrote, "I wish you would persuade enlightened Sikhs to take the Devnagri script in the place of the Gurmukhi". The UK government aided India in planning Sikh genocide during 1984.

Deputy commissioner Rajat Aggarwal and senior superintendent of police Ravcharan Singh Brar visited Surat Singh at his house on February 8 and demanded him to end his no-solid-food strike. They made decision that police must forcibly take him to the civil hospital for treatment but he refused medical examination or treatment. However, on Thursday the police condoned off the civil hospital after they were told by the doctors regarding the deteriorating condition of Surat Singh. His family was also detained, confined and later released and sent to his native village of Hassanpur. Police were deployed around 4pm at the hospital under additional deputy commissioner of police Mukhwinder Singh Bhullar, and the team detained Surat Singh and he was treated by doctors. “The measure was taken after doctors informed the police regarding the worsening condition of Khalsa,” said Bhullar. 22. The clip at the start of this post (44 secs) was heartbreaking to watch. Western propaganda 'is a powerful weapon in war; it is used to dehumanize and create hatred toward a supposed enemy, either internal or external, by creating a false image in the mind.' 'Of all the potential targets for propaganda, children are the most vulnerable because they are the most unprepared for the critical reasoning and contextual comprehension required to determine whether a message is propaganda or not. Children's vulnerability to propaganda is rooted in developmental psychology. The attention children give their environment during development, due to the process of developing their understanding of the world, will cause them to absorb propaganda indiscriminately.' Hundred's of thousands (over 800,000) have seen the clip, how many will think USA is an open society that is free, modern and tolerant? Truly deplorable, shameful and abhorrent....
The numbers are continuing to increase with over 900 deaths and 15000 tested positive. However, these are understated official figures. Officials in three Gujarat cities - Ahmedabad, Bhavnagar and Rajkot - have announced restrictions on public gatherings to contain swine flu. The order prohibits gatherings of more than 10 people in an area under a law that has been invoked in the past during times of religious violence, including the 2002 anti-Muslim riots. The restrictions this time are only for large public gatherings and weddings. Funerals and private parties are exempted. But the order has left many confused. Our thoughts are with the poor who are unable to afford decent care and medicine.
UK Parliament launch of the Sikh Manifesto today from 3-5pm at Portcullis House, Westminster, in the Attlee Suite. In the last decade the approach of the community led by the Sikh Federation (UK) has been politically transformed from radical immigrant class politics to a leader of the Sikh Diaspora in professional lobbying on a comprehensive range of issues. The Sikh Manifesto 2015-2020 is widely viewed as a crucial development reflecting the political maturity of British Sikhs. At the National Sikh Convention in September 2014, it was decided to establish the Sikh Network and launch a Sikh Manifesto for the 2015 General Election so that the main political parties seeking Sikh votes are made aware of the Sikh objectives during the next Parliament. Members of the Sikh Network have worked with the Sikh Federation (UK) to produce the Sikh Manifesto which provides politicians and the wider public with a better understanding of the Sikh contribution, as well as the challenges which Sikhs continue to face due mainly to their distinct religious needs and identity. The Sikh Manifesto is about empowering the UK Sikh community to engage with the UK political system and create partnerships with democratic institutions. The Sikh Network will monitor progress against the Sikh Manifesto over the next five years and discuss and agree changes in strategy and approach to help deliver against the issues set out. The ten-point Sikh Manifesto is unlike the manifestos of the political parties. All Sikh organisations can relate to all or part of the Sikh Manifesto as a briefing document. It is based on the widest possible consensus and collates the most important areas in which challenges remain for British Sikhs and progress is required. All Sikhs can relate to and adopt most or all objectives set out in the Sikh Manifesto and will use it to challenge candidates and political parties to clarify their position prior to the May 2015 General Election and also judge their backing for Sikh issues after being elected. The opinion polls and the emergence of UKIP make the Sikh vote crucial to all the main political parties in the May 2015 General Election. Based on the results of the 2010 General Election there are sufficient Sikh voters alone to determine who will be elected in around 80% of the 50 target seats. http://www.thesikhnetwork.com/sikhmanifesto.php?id=1
