  1. I totally agree with you on the diet perspective but I think age matters too. In out great grandparents' times it was very common to get married at an early age, so that could be one factor too!
  2. The word marriage is fast loosing its meaning today. With men and women getting engulfed completely into their careers and fast lifestyle, getting married at an early age is seen more as a curse in one’s life. Almost everyone wishes to stay single, enjoy their independence, achieve their career goals, work and earn high pay-cheques, while very few decide to get married and begin a family. But, not taking the decision to getting married at the right age has its own cons. Late marriage leads to late pregnancy and its wide range of side-effects. Age is a very important criterion for women, especially for conception. Delayed age greatly affects the fertility of a woman, reducing the possibility of conception. Today, a huge number of couples are fighting infertility due to their age. The number of childless couples is increasing every day. According to a survey, in mid 1990s, only 13 percent of all married couples aging between 35 and 45 had no kids. But today, the number has increased to almost 40 percent which is quite shocking. - sorted out few points from reading
  3. Having gone through a similar situation, I would say that there is no support from the community at all. If anything, people will make you feel worse. My best support were the online discussion forums where I could talk to others in the same situation, and of course having faith in Waheguruji helps the most. Wishing you good luck with your IVF cycle!
  4. Great point about the raw greens. I actually never knew that. Such are the little helpful things you come to know when you get advice from others! in the first trimester everything is so messed up with the body that it is hard to decide what is good and what is bad for you. It is always helpful to do a little research and get advice from those who have similar experience.
  5. When you follow a strict meat-free and egg-free diet, you get many questions as to how do you meet your protein and iron needs during pregnancy. I would like to share a resource that explains what we might seem to be missing in our diet and how to compensate for it. http://www.vrg.org/nutrition/veganpregnancy.php please share more resources that you think are helpful!
  6. Good topic. I have heard it is beneficial to do jaap of the shabad "satgur saache dia bhej" while trying, and during pregnancy "sir mastak rakhia parbrahm" More input is needed from gursikh members!

  8. Veerji, whatever you can do for a fellow gursikh... We don't know when we will need sangat's help, so anything and everything you can do to help is acceptable in Maharj's charan. Let's not bring minor and insignificant differences in our beliefs and opinions into this, and lets all do benti to Maharaj rogee kaa prabh kha(n)ddahu rog || God eradicates the disease from the diseased person. This thread is for Moolmantar Jaap, anything extra is acceptable, but you are not required to post it here. Please feel free to do any other baani paath you feel right.
  9. ✿✿✿✿ 4788 ✿✿✿✿ Sangat Ji, Bibi Jagjeet Kaur Ji from Sacramento is suffering from a rare form of cancer, The doctors have said that only divine intervention can save her from this fast spreading disease. It is a request to please do as many mool mantar jaaps as possible for her chardikala and please do ardas for her deh-arogta (recovery from disease) Please post the number of mool mantar jaaps done for her on this thread so that a collective ardas can be done on sangat's behalf. For those who are not familiar with this chardikala singhnee, here is her story from her own pen:
  10. A Sikh is required to be optimistic and ready to face and address the problems; He should be courageous and ready to sacrifice for righteous cause. Passiveness, gloominess, despair and depression has no place in Sikh life. A Sikh always looks for the bright side, whether win or lose by how he interprets and reacts to everything that happens. He welcomes every day as it comes, and give it all he has got. He puts anger, sadness and regret behind. He always offers a helping hand and a comforting ear to all those in distress. A Sikh always remains in Charhdi Kala at all the times and under all the circumstances by submitting to the Will of God (Bhana). He prays for peace, prosperity and well-being of human race irrespective of caste color and creed. Under all the circumstances, while in Charhdi Kala, a Sikh must surrender before Will of God (Bhana Manana) and spread fragrance of blooming flowers of Sikh philosophy in this pretty, charming and beautiful world. taken from gurmat.info
  11. Follow Bundha's advice. Use an antiseptic ointment to prevent infection, and i would suggest to put a ball of cotton to cushion the ear while it heals. Also, to prevent this from happening again, use softer keski material if possible.
  12. Sangat jee, I need keertan files for this shabad, sung by as many different people/ different tunes as possible. Please help! gobi(n)dh ham aisae aparaadhhee || O Lord of the Universe, I am such a sinner! jin prabh jeeo pi(n)dd thhaa dheeaa this kee bhaao bhagath nehee saadhhee ||1|| rehaao || God gave me body and soul, but I have not practiced loving devotional worship to Him. ||1||Pause||
  13. I hope that YPS will offer full public apology in a day if not in hours. YPS is considered to be one of the top schools in Punjab and i am sure that they don't want a bad image. Such things are very common in Punjab, and they are even worse if compared to what happens to us in states or in other countries. Most cases go unreported, and in many cases the kids/parents don't want to get into the trouble of reporting the cases, call it ignorance, cowardly attitude or plain laziness. Principal should be fired and no sikh owned/run institution/government should give him any job for holding such beliefs. The main problem in Punjab is that there are not enough amritdhari sikhs. There is an imbalance ratio between amritdhari and non-amritdhari sikhs in punjab.. probably more than 95% of sikhs in punjab non-amritdhari.
  14. This is the best idea. A great way to celebrate the 10yr anniversary. Everyone can participate and contribute towards the collective path/simran. I also like the idea of picnic.. having some fun with Gursikh brothers and sisters and having their sangat at the same time. But not everyone will be able to participate, and we will need numerous picnics going on all over the world... lol
  15. 8 VIRTUES TO COMBAT THE 5 EVILS Wisdom (Gyan) : is the complete knowledge of a set of religious principles. It can be achieved by hearing good, thinking good and doing good. A man of wisdom tries to achieve a high moral standard in his life and interaction with others. According to Sikhism, the first steps to wisdom is to consider oneself as an ignorant person who has to learn a lot in life. Truthful Living (Sat) : This is more than 'truth'. It means living according to the way of God i.e. the thoughts should match the words that a person speaks and his actions should also match his words. Truthful living brings a person closer to God. Justice (Niaon) : means freedom and equal oppurtunities for all. Respect for the rights of others and strict absence of attempts to exploit a fellowbeing. Sikhism forbids the desire to loot anothers property. It also strictly instructs the Sikhs to show respect even for the women and children of an enemy. Temperance (Santokh) : means self control which has to be developed through meditation and prayers. A Sikh has to banish evil thoughts from his mind by constantly repeating Gods name and reciting prayers. Torture to the body to develop self-control is not advocated in Sikhism. Patience (Dhiraj) : implies a high level of tolerance and empathy for others. It requires control over ones ego and willingness to overlook anothers weakness or mistakes. It requires that a Sikh should be strongwilled, but kind hearted. Courage (Himmat) : means bravery i.e. absence of fear. It is the ability to stake ones life for ones convictions and for saving others from injustice or cruelty. Humility (Namarta) : is a deliberate denial of pleasure at one's own praise and admiration. It means underplaying ones own strengths and respecting the abilities of others. It is the antidote to 'ahankar' Contentment (Sabar) : means refraining from worldly fears and submitting oneself to the will of God. The typical worldly fears can be fear of death, poverty, disrespect and defeat. It is this virtue that has given the Sikhs the moral strength to withstand the various atrocities committed on their community in the last three centuries
  16. Anger (Krodh) : anger needs to be controlled. A person overcome by 'krodh' loses his balance of mind and becomes incapable of thinking. According to Sikhism, 'krodh' takes a person away from God as hatred has no place in religious practise. Lust (kam): lust and illegitimate sex. It is one of the greatest evils that tempts people away from God. It makes an individual weak-willed and unreliable. Normal sexual relationhip as a house-holder is not restricted in any way in Sikhism. But sex outside marriage or sex against the will of the partner is taboo, as it can cause unlimited sorrows. Greed (Lobh) : greed is a strong desire to possess what rightfully belongs to others. It makes an individual selfish and self-centred. It takes a person away from his religious and social duties. A person can become blind with greed if an effort to control the desire for unlimited possessions is not made. Attachment (Moh) : the strong attachment that an individual has to worldly possessions and relationships. It blurs the perspective of a human being and makes him narrow minded. It deviates a person from his moral duties and responsibilities and leads him towards a path of sin. False Pride (Ahankar) : means false pride due to one's possessions, material wealth, intelligence or powers. It gives an individual a feeling that he is superior to others and therefore they are at a lower level than him. It leads to jealousy, feelings of enmity and restlessness amongst people. Sikhism requires that a person serves the society and community with humility. Hence, the practise of cleaning the footwear of visitors to a Gurudwara is followed by many devout Sikhs.
  17. As to what was there before the world was created, there is this shabad from gurbani... For endless eons, there was only utter darkness. There was no earth or sky; there was only the infinite Command of His Hukam. There was no day or night, no moon or sun; God sat in primal, profound Samaadhi. There were no sources of creation or powers of speech, no air or water. There was no creation or destruction, no coming or going. There were no continents, nether regions, seven seas, rivers or flowing water. There were no heavenly realms, earth or nether regions of the underworld. There was no heaven or hell, no death or time. There was no hell or heaven, no birth or death, no coming or going in reincarnation. ||3|| .......
  18. Here are a few shabads relating to the fact that this body will ultimately be reduced to ashes.... Shabad by Bhagat Ravi Daas Ji in Raag Sorath on Pannaa 659 jal kee bheeth pavan kaa thha(n)bhaa rakath bu(n)dh kaa gaaraa || http://www.sikhitothemax.com/page.asp?ShabadID=2521 Shabad by Bhagat Kabeer Ji in Raag Gond on Pannaa 870 naroo marai nar kaam n aavai || When a man dies, he is of no use to anyone. http://www.sikhitothemax.com/page.asp?ShabadID=3252 Salok by Kabeer Jee on Pannaa 1366 kabeer haadd jarae jio laakaree kaes jarae jio ghaas || http://www.sikhitothemax.com/page.asp?ShabadID=5004
  19. i can help out with the graphics. I have been out of touch with programming for a while, but i believe i can help if assigned small tasks.
  20. I fully agree with you that controversial topics get the most attention. According to my understanding, this is because if the audience has two or more different views, there's gotta be more talking going on. If you post something that everyone agrees with, people will read your post and go on to the next, as you already stated what they have in mind, or they agree with your view point and have nothing more to add.
  21. I don't think singhnee is a wrong word, and it has been in use for a long time. In the ardas we say "jinah singha singhneea ne dharam het sees ditte......" We don't use the word kauraa neh... but singhneea neh.
  22. what exactly is the meaning of "sur nar mun jan"? here are some translations from sttm: 1. sur nar mun jan khojathae sukh saagar gopaal || The angels, the seers and the silent sages search for the Ocean of peace, the Sustainer of the world. 2. sur nar mun jan lochadhae so sathigur dheeaa bujhaae jeeo ||4|| The angelic beings and the silent sages long for Him; the True Guru has given me this understanding. ||4|| 3. sur nar sur nar mun jan sehaj vakhaanee raam || The demi-gods, mortal beings, angels and silent sages express it in their peaceful poise. 4. sur nar mun jan thinehoo thae dhoor ||1|| rehaao || This is something which is far away from the gods, mortal men and silent sages. ||1||Pause||
