  1. I think the essential question is whether there is a difference between baana and normal western clothes. I feel there is a huge difference. - Below is a reply from a different forum regarding dastaar, clothes and jewelary.... the final part shows why baana is superior and important for Sikhs....note: Im not saying not wearing baana makes you less of a sikh, Im saying wearing baana has benefits and makes it harder to lose certain aspects of Sikhi therefore reducing assimilation with other cultures which ultimately leads to a loss of identity.... In regards to jewellary, make up, lengha's... we have got to ask the fundamental reason - ' why are we doing this?' This should be the case in any aspect of our lifes. The fact that people ask if the above things are ok, represents that somewhere deep within them they already know it isn't the best idea.... they are just looking for one person to say 'yeah its all gud'... just so that they can put their mind at ease and carry on with those things. We all know the fundamental reasons for lengha's and makeup and jewelery... its all kaam.... asking anyone why they do the above, the reply is cos i feel comfortable... but really we all know why.... whether people admit it or not... trying to look nice is not for personal reasons, its so that u can say to urself ' when someone looks at me i went them like what they see....' Jewellary/gold is a form of attachment and a way to please the ego. Maharaj has warned us from maya and we should practice humility by letting these things go... (I also admit here that there can be siinghs/singhnees that have reached that level where they don't have that attachment or kaam aspect, so wearing jewelary wouldn't make any difference, but if they have reached that stage they would also be aware of the examples being set and the thought processes they may cause in other people minds....so such things wouldn't even enter their minds ) Personally, wearing guru ji's dastaar and then wearing a lengha to look nice is a contradiction. On one hand we are saying, maharaj let me follw the path of the Khalsa, give me your roop, let me represent the Khalsa with this dastaar'.... and on the other hand we are saying ' maharaj, let me wear your dastaar but let me look gud in a lengha and makeup because the roop you have given me doesn't meet societies requirments' Baana is a gift that allows us to practice humility and not care about the materialistic things of the world. Wearing this 'different' and simplistic types of clothes (chola) especially in western society is a difficult thing to do... why? because we are scared of what people think... they may think that i am not a gora!... Khlasa image is extremely important. Maharaj doesn't want us to blend in and not be seen... Khalsa should be visible wherhere s/he goes. On a personal note, I still have not chalked up the courage to wear baana all the time. I recently started wearing it to programmes and then everytime when i goto my local gurdvara.... i do ardaas that vaheguru gives me the strength to represent the khalsa with all my ability all the time.... Since i started wearing the baana, ive also noted one other thing, which shows the importance of it. Wearing the Khalsa uniform triples the responsibility we feel... what i mean is, unfortunately there are many people with kes and dastaar and kaRe that do manmat and wrong things... that ends up showing sikhi in a bad light....and unfortunately is making people immune to the fact that people with kes, kaRe and dastaars should not be doing those things, however with a baana u know that u goto behave and follow guru's hukam and be an example to everyone all the time.... baana is a huge deterent from doing anything wrong....that includes the way u speak as well as your actions. So hopefully we can see the importance of baana. We shouldnt have the attitude that bana and western clothes are the same.... baana (kakkars and chola, kamarkassa, hazooria) these are all the nishanee of a khalsa... we must ensure we never blend in so much that we lose the baana, or the khasla would have lost an extremely large proportion of its true identity and self control. Please forgive me for any mistakes I have made and do ardaas that daas may also pluck up the courage and not be thoughtfull of other peoples perceptions. Vaheguru ji ki Khalsa Vaheguru ji ki Fateh
  2. Vaheguru Jai Tegang, even though I agree that things are turning for the worse I think you have told us to arm ourselves with the wrong resource. Even though it is VERY important to be ready to fight physically, it is even more important to be able to fight Spiritually. We are in a climate that is feeding the 5 Chor and our Sikhi, naam abhyaas is lowering whilst our muscles are getting bigger. Many Singhs have warned of difficult times ahead... everyone of them advise us to learn as much Baani Kunth as possible - it is ESSENTIAL we know our nitnem khunt, do naam abhyaas now, whilst we have the time..... So I can see where you are coming from, but before we get the khanda's and ak47's out, lets first arm ourselves with the Name of the Lord! Vaheguru
  3. Vaheguru Some rehit marayade specifically say we shud stick to colours like kesri, white, black, blue... and avoid red and green.... Before people start saying this is fanatical and stuff this is how i interpret it... Firstly, Khalsa has its uniform.... blue is probably the most 'Khalsa' colour. Then other colours have different connotations such as Kesri = Sheehdi, white = pure.... Reason for not red is firstly because of what the colour red represents and possibly triggers in ur mind... we all know the colour red comes out on valentines day.. y is that?...its because of the relationship between the colour red and the emotions it trys to create. Colours like green are largely related to Muslims.... at the end of the day we wana wear the uniform of the Khalsa and also we shud look to dress simply... thus white, blue and black are popular... i suppose kesri is the one a bit out there but that has special conotations.... So most people will stick to the 'Khalsa' colours. In terms of the dastaar most gursikhs would just wear blue.... im sure there is literature out there that explains the reasons for this... Bhul chuk maaf
  4. soz... i jus read my msg agen... just wana clarify, I dont mean a dog should be allowed to just roam about in the darbaar but im just simply talking about darshan / glimpses of guru ji...
  5. I gota disagree with you there KFI... First of all if we do ardaas properly, Vaheguru will help us... Vaheguru will provide us with whateva we require.... aslong as we have the kamai, sharda, pure thought or immence grace.... Also, from Giani Takhur Singhs Katha.... a human always 'parakhs' the guru.... (parakh = tests). (Only the true Gurmukh has complete faith in guru ji with no iota of doubt.... as did Bhai Lehna Ji before he became guru)... So the guru parakhs the gursikh as well (as Guru Nanak Dev Ji did with Bhai Lehna).... what is all this around us...maya... it is all here to stop us from the ultimate truth... who put this maya here.... Akaal Purakh.... so technically one could argue that Vaheguru does test us and gives us the option to stick to the path or be tempted into breaking rehit.... However, I think when people argue though (as I have a bit above) that Vaheguru will provide.. he's the creator and sustainer... we forget that this human body WILL have to die.... when it is time it will be time... Its all in the will of God!
  6. Vaheguru I think its wiked that your dog behaves and listens to gurbani... unlike most people that goto gurdvara!!... but anyway I wanted to ask, why do people say 'as long as guru ji's saroop is not in the same room'?? I can agree that we need to make sure the dog doesn't doesnt do his/her business in the room and should make sure that the dog has had ishnaan to make sure its clean... but why can't an animal have guru sahibs darshan... do we forget that Guru Gobind Singh had a baaj and a horse...... Guru Har Rai was known to do look after many animals.... at the end of the day they were the guru and didn't think animals didnt deserve there darshan and company if u know what i mean.... Personally I believe darshan of Guru Granth Sahib Ji as well as the Keertan will only giv that soul such an amazing opportunity in its next life..... Personnally I think you should take ur dog and make it do mathaa tek every morning!!!... there is no difference in making a baby do mathaa tekh since baby is unlikely to realise who Guru ji is... and same with ur pet.... Just my opinion... a bit weird... but still my opinion... Bhul Chuk maaf
  7. Personally I would only resort to meat if my existance can benefit the Panth. Any other reason will not be valid enough to break rehit. Also, all vegetation must have been consumed first.... If I am in the desert and my existance will mean I can get back to my yard and chill then I rather not eat the meat... If it means that I can get back to a dharm yudh or something then yea I will consume... Just my opinion.. ps If vaheguru sent down the pig... it may be as a test... to see if u stay in ur rehit!
  8. I thought I would share some advice I was given by someone... or heard in some katha... it may sound obvious but..... we know ardaas is a must... at end of day if Vaheguru wants us to get up at amritvela He will sort it if he don't we won't, but we must always interpret us getting up at amritvela as 'kirpa' and interpret us not getting up at amritvela as 'our choice' .... neway the advice was that u do ardaas, and u turn on ur alarm to get up for amritvela... and wen u wake up in the morning, DONT THINK!!...just get up.... i know some people must be saying 'we do that duhh' but do we really?.... most of times when we dnt get up for amritvela it is because the alarm goes off, we snooze it and then we stay lying in the bed thinking about getting up and then mulling over the option to sleep for another 2 hours!!!.... so lesson is Don't think.... as soon as u r woken by ur clock stand up and go do ur brush!!! hopefully in time amritvela will become as necessary as having an ishnaan everyday..(i remember the days wen i was younger thinking 'allow having bath every morning' ... but now u gota do (cos u wana)...so in time u wnt beable to do without amritvela.... but to get to that stage (unless uve been blessed bigtime) we gota put in the hard graft in the begining until we ge to the stage where we really want to get up for amritvela and not just do it to stay within our rehit...... bhul chuk maaf ps this is just advice im passing on.... im still at the do ardaas and stay lying in bed thinking stage!! Vahegurooo!!
  9. Gurfateh Below I have cut and paste some responces that were given on another forum when people were asked about boss sikhi camp.... some of them tell the daily programmes and stuff and wud be gud if u can show these to ur parents... ps u wana hurry cos deadline for the DISCOUNT is on 30th may...lol!! or!! u can say to them that if they allow u to go to camp u wont watch tv for like a whole month after u come back.... before u what???!! truss me, lot of people find after they go to camp wen they go back tv generates little interest and u can go without it for ages.... its only when the curiosity kicks back in and u watch it wen u didnt need to...damn kalyug.... Author: SUM GIRL Date: 05-11-06 02:18 the camp is absalloutly amazing.....i went for the first time last year....it was wicked because the campers were so involved in the kirtan, seva, discussions etc.... because it was the first time i went i was really nervous i thpought it was going to be snotty people who wouldnt talk to me and stuff....plus i didnt really no anyone that was goin so just thought id be on my own all the time..... but it was just brilliant....cus not only w=ere the campewrs brilliant but the sevadaar were well friendly (suprise to me as i thought they were all snotty)....its weird its like the camp brings out a different person in all.... the best thing for me personally was there was so much opportunity to do seva....pandeh di seva was wkd cus it was outside and because it was summer it was fab.....all i can say is vaheguroooooo.... then there were some wkd disscusions and talks...there was this one guy who was so amazin....dont now his name think i saw him in leciester....he was o inspiring....his face was just shining with so much energy it was beautiful....there was so much prem yet josh in his talks you felt like just giving your head to maharaj just there and then..... the amritveleh were also fab....dunno why ppl think moneh dont go....there were loads there....but the freaky thing was that everyone wanted to come for amritvela.....the first nite you had nearly the whole camp in there....yes all the moneh an that too....couldnt beleve it....the asa di vaar and aartee used to kill it.... i absaloutly lovede the whole thing....my mate started keepin his kesh after the camp...not suprised....there was so much prem and sharda there....u propa feel at home....the site was fab 2....plus everyone such a laugh....even the organisers and thaT....it wasd this guys bday he got done bad.....even by the organisers....showed me how chilled they were....that was well funny....cant wait for this year... i also been to khalsa camp i did love that too....it was quite cool i defo learnt alot plus the diwaans were wkd....u propa feel on a level there....again i daint no anyone there either.... id say go both....in one you wana sing maharajs bani al day....an the other you wana b in his service allday long.... sorri...i no mADE MISTAKES Author: K Singh Date: 05-11-06 12:56 vaheguru Daas has been fortunate enough to go to Sikhi Camp for the last 2 years, and I cannot wait for this years! Its a trully mind blowing experience....the sangat is awsome. Some of the sevadaars are so inspirational, just by spending a week with them u feel like doing naam simran 24hrs a day... what a beutiful gift maharaj has given to us in the form of sangat.... I think simran used to start definetly by about 2am from some very chardikala sikhs... anyone was allowed to go and start simran but this wasnt in the timetbale. maharaj did Parkash at 4am, with simran until 5am, then nitnem, then asa di vaar... this carried on until 7am.... For campers it was compulsory to be in divaan by 7am (but 90% of campers seemed to be there right from parkash!! The pyaar and sharda of up and coming sikhs was amazing - i think more non-amritdhaar's were doing their nitnem at amritvela than amritdhaari's lolzzz) After japu ji sahib keertan, hukamnama, translation..... it was amazing.... Parkash was just something else... nagra going... and that horn (bit of a 's' shape, crazy sound... i dnt know the name of it)..... see some of the pictures, the one in the sunrise/set ..... Last years site was excellent, the activities wern't to what they could have been, but still by the end of the camp no1 wated 2 leave. The keertan and lectures really hit a chord..... Apparantly this years site is way beta!!! and some once in a life time activities are being arranged..... with maharajs kirpa it should wiked. So unless u haven't figured out, i wud def reccommend Sikhi Camp... esp wen u get a discount if u send u form by 30th May or sumit..... AND its the 10th anniversary of Sikhi Camp..... may there be many years ahead of this great seva..... bhul chuk maaaf, daas Author: Cant wait!! Date: 05-11-06 17:05 I agree with the above comments the camp is just brilliant!!! The best bit has to be the divans without any doubt!! Right from Maharajh's parkash in the morning to Sukhasan at the end! Was so beautiful we guru ji at the front with panj singhs and as singh said the nagara and the horn blasting, with all the sangat walking behind guru ji! ws such an amazing experience every day! And hey man the amritvele were next level! im sure some people just didnt sleep during that camp! i remember the first night i went into darbar sahib and it was jam packed!!!! must have been literaly everyone there! and it was like that for the whole week! most of us had neva even done amritvela before but experiencing it was brilliant! keertan was amazing too, loadss of people were doing it, i remember on one night when they had the rehnsbhai i think sumbody told me 40 people had put down their names to do keertan!! there was just so much keertan and bani being done! even during the day wen talks and stuff was going on people were doin extra bani's in the darbar or learning keertan from each other! yeh activities werent all that last y but it didnt matter cus there was sooo much anand from guru ji and the darbar!!! i swear all these people were crying and sad on the last day cus they were leaving the sangat! there was so much pyar, one girl was saying that the camp was all she looked fwd to all year cus she had no sangat where she lived and her mum neva let her go anywhere else. the singhs doing guru jis seva were wicked! they propa explained the hukumname every day and had soo much respect for guru ji! lol another thing i loved was where it was tooo hot that week and it would be roasting hot in the darbar sahib so everyone would take it in turns to use those pieces of cardboard to fan the sangat!!!! omg wat brilliant seva! and everyone wanted to do it! propa made you feel humble to be able to do the sangat seva as they were singing keertan! i hope its reallly hot this year too so we can do that seva again as well!!! have u guys seen the pictures of guru ji from last year?! how beautiful they are! with all the shastars and beautiful rumaleh and how the sun was setting behind guru ji everyday! lol yeh i saw that guy get done as well, poor guy he never saw it coming!!! but yeh everyone was really chilled out and happy and smiling! all tehse weirdos sayin people dont smile at these camps are mad! i learnt so much stuff from there, loads of stories etc. but definetly it was all about the experience!! i seen that guy that said he was gona keep his hair after! him and like 3 or 4 other guys from that camp all took amrit!! actually i heard about 8 guys who went there havin taken amrit since! so all the seva being done by this camp, and all teh other keertan programmes and rehansbhais is obviously working!! man i cant wait till this year again!!! i wish you could just live there all year around!!! n another thing im happy to see is that people are actually encouragin each other to go to both camps (sikhi camp and khalsa camp) thats the way it should be enit, we jus one big family and the more sangat u can do the better!
  10. Its wiked to hear you will be wearing a keski/dastaar... regarding about the questions u have... a gursikhs head is supposed to always be covered... except for when washing ur kesh or combing! I think this is explicitly written in a few rehitname - we shud also b combing our kes twice a day!! When u have a bath/shower, tie ur dastaar higher so u can still wash ur face properly and tie ur kirpan around ur head..... if u wear a dastaar that u wrap in ur hair first and then make the bunga it neva comes off!! so u wear when going to sleep as well....i think u can find videos on sikhnet??.... bhul chuk maaf
  11. Vaheguru! penji, i am so happy to hear that you are so close to taking amrit and giving ur head... if u need advice and stuff i wud suggest u goto a sikhi camp cos u can find so many chardikala gursikhs... i dnt know where abouts u from.. but if u in uk i can reccomend Sikhi camp (www.sikhicamp.org) - i have been to this camp a few times and some of the sevadaars are next level.... another gud camp wud be khalsa camp but ive never had the chance to go there yet... if u from canada/america ways im sure theres plenty of camps and stuff going on... trust - sangat will make everything clear.... if u want a suggestion, i would advise u try get ur parents on the path towards amrit as well!!!... bless them with stories and the power of naam, encourage seva... hopefully if they build up the piaar to the extent they want amrit as well then they will have no objection..... bhul chuk maaf, daas
  12. vaheguru ji ka khalsa vaheguru ji ki fateh i just breifly wanted to respond to the msg by suman. Before I write anything I just want to say that what I have heard has obviously come from the committee or affiliated peoples point of view and will be undoubtedly biased just as the views posted above are. So take them with a pinch of salt... Regarding the school issue, I have been told that both gurdvare in slough are willing to support the school... especially singh sabha. They have even set money aside for the school project, apparently. However, they are unwilling to hand over the money due to the following reasons: 1) The current project leaders are unwilling to have representatives on the board(directors or wateva) from the gurdwara's. Singh sabha wants to be involved as an institution within the school since it believes that if any shortfalls financially or otherwise come about, the gurdwara will have the resources to take care of it which includes the support that could be received from sgpc.... Without this involvement, the school will be a private project and on the heads of particular people... 2) The gurdwara, and rightly so in my opinion, is concerned that whilst the project remains 'private' the group concerned want to incorporate another gurdwara within the school. Those spear heading the project are largely affiliated with a particular group... but know names need to be mentioned. 3) The project is for the community so surely the gurdvare should be involved. Hopefully, i have explained the 'other side of the story'. Regarding the money collection at the Nagar Keertan... both years they have had floats and been collecting money... i saw the van this year and last year... they also have loud speakers to let the sangat know everything as well..... so whether some individuals have tried to stop that is a different matter, as far as i knnow they have had, with no problems, the opportunity to collect money for the project at Nagar Keertans. There are 'bad apples' on both sides... hopefully they will be able to resolve the matter by sitting down and discussing the issues rather than shouting and arguing at each other....... As it has been said singh sabha slough have also been granted permission to build sports facilities etc.... AT THE MOMENT there is no truth in that there will be party's and stuff happening in that place... however, I am fully aware that it is a risk.... as far as i am concerned there will be a hall for footy (which later people will prob wana try use for party's) tennis courts, cricket pitches etc.... If there comes a time that the committee say they will allow party's, I know that there are some singhs (unfortunatley they are prob minority) within the committee that will apose it and many from the general sangat. If that ever happens, Im sure that the rest of the uk sangat that already does som much seva will help us make sure those things do not happen.... Regarding the alcohol in the gurdvara, it did happen, someone brought in alcohol but they were kicked out and stuff.... it prob was a comitee member but im not sure.... but this person has not been further punished which isnt a gud thing.... as far as i know... there was no pub crawl after winning the elections....... Finally i just wanted to say that the only reason i have posted this is due to seemingly one sided views that makes everyone who reads the above posts in the view that singh sabha slough are anti sikhi.... Can i just make another benti as well..... when it comes to community issues such as this, can the people within the communities try and resolve the issues to the best of their ability... if they cant be resolved maybe then ask for advice on forums and if the situation is to be explained please give an account that portrays the whole story..... Please forgive me if i have offended anyone.
