  1. vaheguru ji ka khalsa vaheguru ji ki fateh There was an injured bird in our garden once (I think twas my cat's doing) and it couldn't fly. My dad and I phoned up a bird shelter which was about a 30 minute drive away and they told us to bring it over. They gave us some advice about how to transport it there and so we dropped it off (while reciting Chaupai Sahib). They had loads of birds at that place. Maybe the RSPB (for birds) would be better than the RSPCA? Anyway by now you will probably have already done something so let us know what happened : ) vaheguru ji ka khalsa vaheguru ji ki fateh
  2. I used to love Greggs. I've found that it's possible to make pretty much everything vegetarian in their bakeries at home without eggs.
  3. That's not what the guy's asking.
  4. For those still arguing: "From what information I have been able to collect from different sources, the Guru Ram Das Medical College in Amritsar is run by SGPC. There is no funding from the government. It is entirely funded by SGPC. The admission is based on a merit list prepared from the results of competition examination ( called Common Entrance Test –or something !!!) that all students seeking admission have to take. The list is prepared by the Baba Farid University of Medicine and Health Sciences. There are about 6 Medical colleges affiliated with the Baba Farid University. Guru Ram Das College is just one of them. Combined number of total places available in all the Medical Colleges of Punjab are about 700 per year. Because of reservation system only about 340 seats are available in the open category to which any body including Sikhs can apply. Guru Ram Das College admits 100 students every year. Out of that 50 seats are in Open category. So, these (50) open category seats are offered per merit list without any consideration to religion, caste etc, to those who make Guru Ram Das College as their choice.-. The other 50 seats are in reserved for Sikh students (only at the Guru Ram Das College). The admission in the reserve category is also per merit list provided by the University from which the college strikes off the names of non-Sikh students. To be included in this category list, candidate is required to give an affidavit at the time of applying that he/she is a Sikh , does not trim his beard, (girl) does not pluck her eyebrows etc etc. This girl could not qualify under the open category. So, she applied in the reserve category, and signed the affidavit. But at the interview ( they call it counseling) , counselor noted that she has been plucking her eyebrows , so the college authorities denied her the admission. She appealed to High Court against the decision of the college authorities." p.s. Mehtab I like how you posted the original article and then sat back and watched the chaos. : )

  6. vahegurujikakhalsavahegurujikifateh If you feel so strongly about it why don't you approach the Sikh Channel directly? People are making it sound like the world will perish unless as many people as possible are told! Contact the those involved you silly people. On a side note it's not like all of us are perfect either. At least the people on the Sikh Channel are doing some sort of seva? They're giving up their own time and money in order to educate our children. Which is more than can be said for the majority of people here. vahegurujikakhalsavahegurujikifateh
  7. There's nothing wrong with it : )
  8. Papi I bow my head at the genius-ness. What's your inspiration?
  9. I'd say India would be best for anyone. If that isn't an option Switzerland's incredible for scenery, meditation, hill-walking, paragliding. Very clean too.
  10. Posted on behalf of Tubelight aka Akirtghan aka Papi (there are you happy now! after 3 fudgin' edits!): http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/podcast...ript060809.html A 10 year study of more than a half million U.S. men and women associates the frequency adults eat red and processed meats with significant increases in overall death, death from cancer, and cardiovascular disease. The study, which features a cohort of about 322,000 men and 223,000 women (who answered questionnaires about food intake and health for a decade), suggests the consumption of red meat is independently associated with mortality. The findings (recently published in the Archives of Internal Medicine) also suggest overall deaths, deaths from cancer, and cardiovascular diseases decline when adults eat less white meat (such as poultry, turkey, and canned tuna). The study is based on the Diet and Health study sponsored by the National Institutes of Health and AARP (formerly known as the American Association of Retired Persons), which occurred between 1995-2005. An accompanying editorial in the Archives of Internal Medicine notes the large number of participants who voluntarily filled out surveys about their diet and health makes the study one of the most comprehensive ever – and adds new evidence that underscores medical counsel for adults to curb red and processed meat consumption. The findings that associated eating red and processed meats with overall deaths, cancer deaths, and cardiovascular deaths occurred even after controlling for other health issues including: * body mass * smoking history * physical activity * alcohol consumption * vitamin intake * eating fruits and vegetables * and menopausal hormone therapy among women participants. To put this another way, the study provides a fresh context that the intake of otherwise beneficial foods and vitamins may not offset the health impacts of red and processed meats. In addition, the association between red and processed meats and mortality seems to occur in spite of other questionable health habits, such as smoking, overweight, and little physical activity. Incidentally, about 70,000 of the original sample of more than one half million adults died during the ten year study. The researchers defined red meat broadly including: beef and pork, ham, hotdogs, liver, and meats in foods such as pizza, chili, lasagna, and stew. Processed meats included: bacon, red meat sausage, poultry sausage, cold cuts, and luncheon meats. It should be noted that mortality rates comparatively declined among the participants who less frequently ate red and processed meats. Nevertheless, overall and disease-specific mortality rates (regardless of frequency) still were significantly higher among red and processed meat eaters. The study's five authors (who are from the National Cancer Institute) reported some mixed findings. They suggest a need to better understand some complex interactions, such as the comparative mortality risks among meat eaters who do not smoke their entire life – and associations among specific types of red and processed meats and mortality rates from other diseases. In providing some perspective about the overall findings, the authors explain the increase in mortality might stem from issues, such as the saturated fats within meats – and the possibility that some carcinogens are released during cooking meat at high temperatures. In the aforementioned editorial that accompanies the study, the author notes the research does not suggest all Americans should become vegans. Rather, the study suggests a need for adults to reduce the intake of meats and saturated fats. The editorial also notes the findings suggest physicians should provide more public health leadership by encouraging Americans to eat a healthier diet.
  11. http://www.royalmail.com/portal/rm/content...ediaId=58800704 I think it says here that the 2kg is free for relatives of the personnel deployed there. Regardless of this small point, a nice idea.
  12. Got to say, loving the sisterly love here. You're all being ridiculous and incoherent. Take the cat fight elsewhere. Question's been answered already, I've reported the topic hopefully someone with any sense will close it.
  13. vahegurujikakhalsavahegurujikifateh PJS thank you so much for taking the time out to do these translations. I hope you'll be able to continue this and more. vahegurujikakhalsavahegurujikifateh
  14. "What is the use of such a service of the Lord, by doing which our fear complex is not eliminated? Once the love of the Lord is developed, then where is the question of any fear complex? O Nanak, the follower who develops love for the Lord and finally merges with Him is acceptable in the Lord's Presence."
  15. Sorry for the late reply. Even so I hope you make and like them: Ingredients: 250g self-raising flour Half a teaspoon bicarbonate of soda Half a teaspoon of salt 4 tablespoons (60ml) of unsweetened cocoa powder 140g white sugar Equivalent of 1 egg (I use egg replacement powder from Tesco's, some people use their own recipes) 240ml milk 90ml corn oil 1 teaspoon vanilla essence 70g plain chocolate drops (if you want chocolate chips in em) Preheat your oven to 190-200 degrees Celsius. In a bowl sift together the flour, bicarbonate of soda, salt and cocoa. Stir in the sugar. Add the chocolate drops and mix. In a separate bowl, add your egg replacement, milk, oil and vanilla and mix. Pour the wet bowl into the dry bowl and stir until the mixture is JUST combined. *don't stir too much* The mixture should be lumpy and a bit stiff, but no dry flour should be visible. Fill a muffin tray (or paper cases) spooning the mixture until cases/holes are three-quarters full. Bake for 15-20 minutes until the tops spring back when touched. Make sure they're cooked when a toothpick/fork poked in the middle comes out clean. Usually this mixture makes at least 20 little muffins, so half everything if you want to test it first. It's been tried and tested, and forced down the throats of non-veg people who can't tell they're eggless (or pretend they can't anyway). Good luck
  16. I have one for chocolate muffins, will that be any good? Alas chocolate cake is a much higher state of rasoi-avastha for the likes of me. (I haven't had success with it.)
  17. vaheguru ji ka khalsa vaheguru ji ki fateh The whole point is to be comfortable in your skin, a point which some seem to have completely missed. The reason for not wearing makeup is you should be comfortable with what you look like.. there's no difference between hiding behind makeup and hiding behind a dastaar. In fact you shouldn't be using Guru Ji's crown as an excuse at all. Is it okay to hide behind a dastaar and not behind makeup? Either way, you are hiding behind something. vaheguru ji ka khalsa vaheguru ji ki fateh
  18. If you want any type of proof, you could go to one of their events, or speak to Harinder Singh and make a decision for yourself.
  19. Why don't you email/phone them with your suggestion? And then help them implement it?
  20. I didn't understand why the BBC were giving the impression that this is 'new' news based on a recent report as it's been known for many years. Maybe they're just trying to raise awareness. Or they're running out of stories.
  21. vahegurujikakhalsavahegurujikifateh Are you just assuming that he doesn't understand it? Or has he given some sort of indication that he thinks we as a species are hairless beings? Like papi said, if he's getting married (and if you're both Amritdhari) it sounds ridiculous that he doesn't know this already. It's understandable that you're shy and you might not feel comfortable talking to him about intimate things at the beginning, but if it is really bothering you, you just need to go for it and talk to him about it. If he has any respect for Sikhi he probably will be fine about it. And talking about things like this might even bring you two closer. Sometimes saying things straight up is the best way to go about it, as cringe-ful as it might seem. vahegurujikakhalsavahegurujikifateh
  22. Contact the heads of all your union's societies and ask if you can come along to their next events/speak to them about their needs/make them feel loved etc.
