  2. :umm: it was probably accidental... when posting on tapoban if you or someone else (on the same computer) uses a particular name it stays until you change it. it's quite irresponsible of you to say it's a "very sad sad SAD act" without first confirming your suspicions.
  3. Isn't it unfortunate that all Guru Granth Sahib birs aren't given such beautiful ramallay? I think (could be wrong) that even at Dasmesh Darbar only the "main" Guru Granth Sahib bir (pictured above) is dressed in the nicer ramallay. I guess it really doesn't matter how "fancy" they are... as long as they are clean and well made ... with nice, good quality material.
  4. Waheguru Jee Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Jee Kee Fateh Good luck with your surgery curious_man
  5. Sign this petition too: http://www.petitiononline.com/TruthPet/petition.html We, humanists, human rights activists, majority of Indian population and citizens of this world call on your Excellency for a "Commission of Truth and Justice” under the auspices of the UN to comprehensively investigate the mass murders of Indian Sikhs in 1984 and label it as genocide as defined in the “Genocide Convention and the relevant international law"...
  6. I’ll explain why I have a problem with New York City Transit requiring Kevin Harrington to wear the MTA logo on his turban. From Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964: “Employers must reasonably accommodate employees' sincerely held religious beliefs or practices unless doing so would impose an undue hardship on the employer. A reasonable religious accommodation is any adjustment to the work environment that will allow the employee to practice his religion. Flexible scheduling, voluntary substitutions or swaps, job reassignments and lateral transfers and modifying workplace practices, policies and/or procedures are examples of how an employer might accommodate an employee's religious beliefs.” It’s important to note that Harrington had been wearing his turban at work without the logo for 25 years. This is important because his doing so obviously did not cause any undue hardship to New York City Transit. If it had been causing problems I’m certain they would have picked up on it before now. Also from the Civil Rights Act: “Employers must permit employees to engage in religious expression if employees are permitted to engage in other personal expression at work, unless the religious expression would impose an undue hardship on the employer. Therefore, an employer may not place more restrictions on religious expression than on other forms of expression that have a comparable effect on workplace efficiency.” Apparently other employees were allowed to wear regular baseball caps (personal expression). The fact is: a turban is not a billboard. I think a logo on a turban is inappropriate. That’s just my personal belief, I don’t know if it’s right or wrong. I think any type of logo, sign, or flag (ie. stars and stripes) looks ridiculous. I saw a Sikh man with a “US flag” ribbon wrapped around his turban. This was after 9-11, so maybe it was just a security measure, but he looked like a dork. Muslims are also speaking up against requirements to have the logo on their headscarves. Sikhs should also fight to keep certain things sacred. I know that Sikh policemen in New York have agreed to wear their police badges on their turban. I can understand how someone might argue that if they don’t this would cause problems with identification, or with morale, or something else. Employers can make up any number of reasons, but in Harrington’s case it seems that his turban sans logo didn’t cause any problems until someone decided to make an example of him (that’s what it seems like from what I’ve read).
  7. WOW.. that's such a cool poster... so inspiring!
  8. Waheguru Jee Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Jee Kee Fateh... If I remember correctly, there was a petition going around about 10 years ago against the "Golden Temple Atta" company. I know they were asked to stop using the image and the name. I don't know what their response was... but it obviously didn't work. Maybe the results will be different this time around.
  9. One more thing: Even if they change their gloves... all the vegetables have already been contaminated by "meaty" gloves.
  10. Sikhi is a way of life, its the one true religion... The following is from Bachitar Natak... http://www.lotusmedia.co.uk/sikhstudent/library.htm DESCRIPTION OF AKAAL PURKH THROUGH THIS LOWLY CREATURE, SRI GURU GOBIND SINGH CHAUPAYEE When I, the Akaalpurakh, first created the universe, Amongst my creations turned out to be miserly-inflicting-demons; They became mad with their mystical and muscular powers, and They would not worship the adorable Creator. ( 6) * Yaadovanshi Raja Shaantnoo’s second son who was the father of Yudhishtar, Bheem, and Arjan, etc, the five pandvaas Then, out of anger, I destroyed them all in a short time; And, instead, I created gods and angels. They, too, mustered considerable power and glorification; And, started assuming to be God themselves. (7) Shiva started to call himself Immortal; Vishnu also equated himself to the Creator; Brahma called himself the Supreme, and No one considered the Lord as the Lord. (8) Then, I (Waheguru) created eight witnesses, the sun, moon, fire, wind, Yamma, element, axis and Dhruv, To certify the existence of the Lord; And ordered them to worship the Akaalpurakh, and declared That there was no one else worshippable. (9) Those who didn’t, or couldn’t, recognize the Supreme; Started calling themselves as the Ultimate. Many started worshipping the Sun and the Moon, And many accepted the powers of fire and the wind. (10) Some called the stone, the Saligram, the Waheguru; Some, taking the baths regularly started calling the water, the Supreme. >Many got scared indulging in various forms of acts and imitations, But Dharamraaj recognized and accepted only the Infinite. (ii) When the Omnipotent could produce witnesses for His cause; When they came to this world, they would start calling themselves the Divinity; The real meaning of the Immortal would be forgotten; They all got worried about their own glory and splendor. (12) When none of them accepted the existence of the Eternal, The Lord created the progeny of the mind, the human beings; They, too, got under the influence of worldly attachments, And started assuming the statues, and idols of stone as the Providence. (13) Then the Lord created the saints and seers; They, too, didn’t acknowledge the All-powerful. If someone was made intelligent and wise enough, He/she, too, started his/her own sect or religion. (14) No one recognized or attained the Supreme Being; In fact, they all increased the divisions and ambiguities; They would promulgate their own traditions and rules, And, no one would, after having been indoctrinated by the cult leaders, follow Akaalpurakh’s commands. (15) Whosoever attained even an iota of ‘powers’, Would initiate their own religious divisions; No one gave cognizance to the Creator; Rather, became mad and insane by continuously indulging in covetedness (ego, I am).(16) The principal essence was not recognized nor appreciated by any one; Each one was involved in a variety of vanities; Again, when He created kings and ascetics; They, too, initiated actions in favor of their own memories - Simritis. (17) As they became devotees of these memorial descriptions, They went farther and farther away from the tradition of the Omniscient; Those who concentrated in the feet (humility) of the Benefactor, They did not come even near the tracks of the Simritis. (18) Brahma created four Vedas, And preached only the actions and deeds prescribed/described therein and made the m prevalent amongst the people; Those whose concentration was confined to the love of His feet, Would have abnegated themselves from the Vedas. (19) Those who relinquished their dependence on books and Vedas, They became the true adherents of the Preserver; Their advice was based on true sermons, Many miseries of various kinds were ground and destroyed under them. (20) Those who even bore tortures over their bodies, (to be able to attain Him) They would not give up their adoration for the Lord; (this is a strange paradox) They would gradually move towards the land of Waheguru; And, then, there remained no difference between them and the Absolute. (21) Those who were terrified by the books, the Vedas, They would abandon His path, and acquiesce to their commands; They would, ultimately, go to the hell, inferno region, and Would continue to be revolving in the cycles of births and deaths. (22) Then the Lord created Duttatrey, the founder of ascetics (jogis); He, too, started his own religion; He decorated his hands and nails, and locks of his hair, But did not follow the teachings and the advice of the Preserver. (23) With Akaalpurakh’s blessings was created the Gorakh, His disciples considered him, the Gorakh, the loftiest king; Piercing their ears, they wore earrings, and Did not pay attention to either the love of God or the modes of meditation. (24) The Lord, then, blessed Ramanand; He clad himself like a recluse; He started wearing and playing with a necklace of wood; No one ever thought about the practices and the traditions of the Absolute. (25) If God created saintly persons, They, too, directed people towards their own self styled paths; God, then, created Mohammed, and Bestowed upon him the kingship of Arabia. (26) He, too, created another religion, and Produced princes without the religious symbols, hair, sacred thread, and their complete form; He made everyone to meditate on his own name, and He never preached nor confirmed the name of the Truth, the Waheguru. (27) Everyone pushed his own concepts, and No one gave recognition to the Infinite Spirit; Then, the Gum says, “The Lord called me while I was meditating; and He said the following and sent me to this world”. (28)AKAALPURAKH BAACH CHAUPAYEE I am designating you as my son; I am extending the privilege to you of being my son) I am creating you to spread my message; You organize a true religion down there in the world, And prevent the worldly people from falling into the practice of fake actions (in stead of remembering Waheguru). (29) DOHRAA I, (Gobind Singh), then stood up with folded hands, And said some words with a bowed head. The path of ‘truth’ can prosper in this world only If You, the Waheguru, are by my side. (30) CHAUPAYEE For this mission, I was sent to the earth; Then, I took birth in this materialistic world. I am relating to you, the worldly people, exactly the way, Akaalpurakh told me; I will not invite animosity from any one else. (31) Those people who would call me (Gobind Singh) the Immortal Waheguru Would be thrown into deep hellish infernos; Consider me the servant of the Infinite; but There is not even an iota of a difference bewteen Him and me. (32) I am the servitor of the Supreme Being; I have come to observe the worldly drama; I am saying whatever the great Master of the universe has asked me to say; I will not remain quiet for the mortal world. (33) NARAAJ CHHAND I am conveying exactly whatever the Lord said; I am saying it all without any bias or favor to anyone; I will not blend with anyone’s fakery; Rather, I will sow the seeds for the unaccountable Waheguru’s Naam. (34) I do not worship the statues of stone (or the stone): Nor do I get impressed with anyone’s guise; I sing the praises of the Naam of the Endless; And I have attai ned the Ultimate, the Waheguru. (35) I will not acquire the matted hair (tresses); Nor will I wear big earrings; I will not favor anyone; And will do only whatever the Everlasting dictates me to do. (36) I will worship only One’s Naam, and only one Naam; That can be employed and be useful under all circumstances; I will not worship anyone else Nor will I seek anyone else’s support and protection. (37) I have meditated only on the Naam of the Infinity; Have attained the Supreme Flame, the Immortal Lord; I do not meditate on any other’s name Nor will I ever utter anyone else’s name. (38) I am engrossed only in One’s Naam, And am not involved nor interested with egotistic or vane thoughts; I am contemplating on the Supreme Waheguru; Thus, am able to wipe off endless sins. (39) I am permeating only Your shape and form, 0 Waheguru! I will not be happy in someone’s donations nor will I be contended in someone’s giving any kind of alms; neither of these activities will give me pleasure. I will repeat only His Naam, Which will erase countless misdeeds. (40)

  12. http://www.outlookindia.com/full.aspfodnam...=Sikh+(F)&sid=2 To Forget Is Fatal A few committed men keep the fight alive to bring the culprits to book SHEELA REDDY Gurcharan Kaur's trophies are displayed on a high shelf in her two-roomed home in East Delhi's Trilokpuri: four daughters in their bridal finery with their grooms. But for the 55-year-old widow who has single-handedly raised seven children with a measly pension of Rs 375 and the earnings from a teashop she opened in her verandah, supplemented now and then by free rations from the gurudwara, the best trophy so far is her youngest daughter. Ravinder, 20, is working her way through college and will soon be the family's first graduate. Gurcharan waits for the smiling young girl to leave the room before recounting the events of November 1, 1984, when her husband, Naik Teja Singh, was butchered and torched by a mob outside their newly-built home. "It's OK for me to remember," she says stoically, pulling out her husband's photograph from behind a curtained enclosure, "but I don't want my children to be affected." This motherly urge to shield her children from the horrors of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots sometimes has the spokesmen for the Sikh community fretting. "The younger generation of Sikhs scarcely know (or want to know) the events that culminated in 1984," says an editorial in The Sikh Review, a community journal. "It's spineless to forget what happened," agrees Patwant Singh, best-selling author of The Sikhs. "The Jews haven't forgotten t ill now, why should we? Even some gurudwara functionaries ask the victims to lay off (filing complaints against the killers)." But it's simply not fair, as advocate Harinder Singh Phoolka points out, to shift the entire burden of bringing the guilty to book onto the widows and children of the riot victims. "How can you expect a poor widow from a small colony to give evidence against the culprits? She has enough on her hands trying to earn a living for herself and her children without having to pursue court cases and face intimidation by policemen and politicians. There is a difference between forgetting and helplessness. If they are helpless, it is not their failure but society's." Twenty years later, the collective 'forgetfulness' is leading to new inequities: while the Sikhs have risen to be India's richest community, the families of the estimated 2,733 riot victims in Delhi are almost all below the poverty line. The reason: most of the Sikhs butchered during the riots were the only bread-winners in the family, leaving behind widows and children who fell—are still falling—through the cracks. Phoolka's 25-year-old employee, his driver Gurpal Singh, is one example. At five, Gurpal watched his father and two uncles, all contractors with a thriving business, being slaughtered by mobs. With his mother receiving only Rs 10,000 from the government in compensation, Gurpal couldn't afford to go to school. Even the gurudwara committees, which used to give scholarships and rations to the victims' families, stopped helping after a few years, forcing Gurpal to take a job as soon as he was able. "Delhi's gurudwara committee employs a staff of some 2,000 but even they prefer to give jobs to relatives rather than the children of the riot victims," says Phoolka, who is fighting a case for a riot orphan who has been refused a job in the gurudwara committee's many institutions. Phoolka is among the few who refuse to forget. As secretary of the now-disbanded umbrella or ganisation of human rights activists, Citizens Justice Committee, the senior advocate in the Supreme Court has been fighting ceaselessly to nail the culprits of the 1984 riots. "At that time," he recalls, "I thought it would take no more than four or five years. The kind of material we were getting I had no doubt that the killers would be brought to justice." Nineteen years and nine high-level probes later, Phoolka has still not lost faith—relentlessly pursuing cases, encouraging the demoralised, and reassuring the intimidated. "I am not doing it for the Sikhs—our turn is over and won't come again for at least another 50 years. I am doing it to uphold the rule of law, to make sure that there won't be another Gujarat or Jhajjar."
  13. manmohan singh can pay tribute to whoever he wants... i don't really care if mourns for "mother india". i'm sure he doesn't care about what you or i think... he might be a nice guy. he might be a great leader. he might be a smart man. all i am saying is that he is a traitor to sikhs... he's a traitor to all the sikh men who were killed because of indiras orders he's a traitor to all the sikh women that were raped in 84 he's a traitor to all the sikh children who lost their parents he's a traitor to our Gurus and our Gurdwaray He didn't have to pay tribute unless he wanted to. There are plenty of ways to get out of "ceremonies"... if he actually cared to he could.
  14. Why would hindus be upset if manmohan singh didn't tribute indira gandhi? It was just a memorial, not her actual funeral. 20 years from now will the American population be upset if the American president doesn't attend Ronald Reagan's memorial? Probably not. Were Indians upset when sonia gandhi apologized for "operation blue star" and the anti-sikh riots following the assassination of her mother-in-law? No, they weren't. I don't expect him to do anything for Sikhs. I'm not surprised that he went and "sprinkled rose petals" because i think he genuinely wanted to be there.
  15. Okay, so now we should judge people by what they feel in their heart and not by their actions? :| that's crazy
  16. Click on the link to see the picture...
  17. This is ridiculous... does he (manmohan) have to be SO BLATANT in his love for indira gandhi?!?!? http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/3969295.stm India in homage to Indira Gandhi Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was among those at the memorial India has paid tribute to the former prime minister, Indira Gandhi, on the 20th anniversary of her assassination. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, a Sikh, and Congress party president Sonia Gandhi, Mrs Gandhi's daughter-in-law, led tributes at a memorial in Delhi. They sprinkled rose petals on the rock memorial and attended prayers at the residence where she was killed by her Sikh bodyguards in 1984. Mrs Gandhi was prime minister from 1966 to 1977, and from 1980 to her death. Investigations An international human rights group has urged the Indian government to make a public commitment to prosecute those responsible for the anti-Sikh violence that followed her death. Indira memorial draws crowds "After two decades, the prosecutors and police should act. There is more than enough evidence to do so now," said Brian Adams, Asia director of Human Rights Watch, said in a statement. Some of those responsible for the violence had been, and still were, members of the governing Congress Party, the New York-based group said. Seven government-appointed commissions which had investigated the massacres were either whitewashes, or had met with official obstruction, it added. Up to 1,000 people are thought to have died in riots which erupted across In dia in the days following her murder, as Hindus took their revenge on Sikhs who were blamed for the assassination. Publication of the latest report on the violence, by the Nanavati Commission, was due on Monday but is reported to have been put back by two months.
  18. http://www.king5.com/localnews/stories/NW_...KC.8a95c14.html Grocery distributor busted by feds 07:03 PM PDT on Wednesday, October 6, 2004 By ERIC WILKINSON / KING 5 News TUKWILA, Wash. – A local grocery distributor is accused of selling food infected by rats and vermin. Unsuspecting customers walked into the grocery distributor as federal agents inside raided the place for allegedly selling contaminated food. KING International Food Bazaar, a.k.a. Northwest Trading and Spice Company The FDA seized two-thirds of the inventory at Tukwila's International Food Bazaar, a.k.a. Northwest Trading and Spice Company, after complaints that the store's food was "contaminated with filth," including bugs, bird droppings and vermin. "The insects have gotten into the food and so have larvae, eggs etc., and there's a rodent infestation problem in the warehouse, so you've got rodents, mice rats, etc. chewing into the sides of bags of rice and things of that nature," said Tad Seder, U.S. Attorney's Office. In addition to Wednesday's raid by the feds, there have been two other occasions when state inspectors raided this business ordering the destruction of some 60,000 pounds of food because it was "unfit for human consumption." But problems apparently persisted. Outside the warehouse three rattraps are plainly visible and witnesses report seeing at least one dead bird inside the building. International Food Bazaar operates as both a retail outlet and a supplier of Indian and Pakistani foods to area stores and restaurants. The businesses owner did not consent to an on-camera interview, but said he is cooperating with authorities and will let the courts decide whether he has done anything wrong. Meantime, some customers say they've already made their decision. "I don't come back. I don't want to become sick," said Maow Weehelie. The company closed Wednesday, but signs said they will be open for business again Thursday. The FDA is not releasing names of stores and restaurants that could be selling the contaminated food. However, a judge has ordered authorities to notify those who have done business with the company.
  19. What about starting a new section for gurbani definitions? I haven't really found anything extensive online. Maybe one thread for each ukhar, and people could post a definition and a line from gurbani using the "word". I know this would really help me, because the extent of my gurbani vocabulary is .
  20. I knew someone who worked at Subway... she said she had accidently dropped some of those veggie patties on the floor... she was about to throw them away.... her manager saw her and stopped her from throwing them away... she had to put them back :| she saw some other gross stuff too... so much that she won't eat there anymore.... anyone can make a sandwich at home... try it.
  21. maybe there isn't a plastic jug making factory on the east coast?
  22. Param Singh, What's "over religious"? Or how was she "over religious"?
  23. Waheguru Jee Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Jee kee Fateh, Does anyone know if Manmohan Singh visited a Gurdwara during his visit to New York?
  24. I took Punjabi at a public university and we read and discussed a couple of Sakhis. The teacher didn't go into a detailed discussion about Sikhi, but he felt that Sikhi is relevant to Punjabi and Punjabi "culture".
