We don't "confess" because unlike other belief systems, we know that God knows everything anyways. All we can do is pray for guidance and support to help us overcome our issues and move on.

Yes, I know that, but that's the point of a metaphor: its not "real". Its a good way to describe a situation, so there's no reason to be shocked to call God a different gender because it doesn't fit with one specific metaphor.

The thing also about metaphor is that it can change over time. Whereas in the past the husband wife metaphor depended greatly on the fact that the husband was generally "superior" and the wife basically "followed him around", now the metaphor falls apart a little bit with general acceptance (in the western world anyways) of true equality between males and females. Much of gurbani's use of that metaphor must then be taken in that context of what the metaphor resembled at the time it was written.

Guys, I hope you realize by saying there is a formal separate hell, you are contradicting gurbani as well! Our gurbani talks of two possibilites upon death: reincarnation or joining with Waheguroo. That is completely antithetical to "heaven or hell"... you cant have "hell" and reincarnation.

And since in gurbani, we are explained that we can reach 'heaven' (Waheguroo) in this life, we can also reach 'hell' in this life... and that is by definition "karma" (you reap what you sow). No place with short red guys with pitchforks I'm afraid.

God doesn't have male or female genitalia. So stop worrying about semantics.

As for the original post, you need several points to bring yourself towards God, the three pillars: kirth karna, vandh chankna, and naam japna. Note that only one of the three involve patt/simran... the other two require you to serve humanity, volunteer, and work truthfully and hard. Always try to improve yourself!

So I can't kill a cow... but everything else is fair game??

    /sarcasm

The current translation for those lines above (Sikhitothemax):

If a Brahmin kills a cow or a female infant, and accepts the offerings of an evil person,

he is cursed with the leprosy of curses and criticism; he is forever and ever filled with egotistical pride.

In other words, it talks nothing of who to eat or not to eat from, but rather comments on people being hypocritical. Like if you call yourself a man of god, and then disobey all ur oaths to him, or accept "bad money", those people are egotisical and will be cursed.

Hell is metaphorical... and if you follow the metaphor, our life here and now is 'hell'. According to sikhi, you are either joined with God, or you are not. There isn't a time or place of judgment, but if you can join with God then obviously you "are in heaven", if you do not, then you are in the opposite situation!

Agree with Heera veerjee 100%. It is very much dependent on the character of the veer you're with... if he's willing to do whats right for you two and sikhi, then that reflects on him... and like Heera said, if he prefers his caste, then he doesn't deserve you.

As to the comment a bit later wait "a few generations"... that's what they said 500 years ago when our gurus made us all equal. Doing whats right and carrying our Khalsa banner doesn't take generations or millennia... it happens right here, right now, with us.

Veerjee, why would you go from one extreme (long hair) to the other (trim it down)? Use some hair spray / gel to fix it up a little, and by that I dont mean plaster it to your face, but do it with a more suttle natural look. It'll make your dhari a little easier to handle, and frankly you get what it sounds like you're trying to accomplish withought breaking your amrit.

Actually , it doesn't say that at all does it?

aagae aavath si(n)gh j paavai || vaahiguroo kee fathae bulaavai ||

That litlerally means when a Singh comes, say "Waheguroo's fateh"

That hukam I dont believe was written by our gurus, nor put into the SGGS. A greeting is a greeting.

Well the way I see it, Sikhi and science are the same thing... God made our universe and our biology. So no matter which way we approach the issue, we should get the same answer :)

I think this issue, like literally every single issue that comes up as a debate does not have an answer to YES or NO, but something in the middle.

It would seem to me that since waheguru's jot is within every creature, plant or animal, rock or planetoid, that this comes down to a similar issue as to why sikhs (in general) don't eat meat: because its wrong to induce pain if it can be prevented (ie: by eating something without a central nervous system, like plants or fungi).

Similarly, we lose diploid cells by the millions each day, as its sloughed off our skin, our GI tract, but we don't see that as an issue. Potentially each of these cells contains the material to form another human being, just the same as a fertilized egg would, especially early on when its just a simple packed collection of cells.

However, the fetus does begin to develop a central nervous system: it can begin to simulate reflexes at 8.5 weeks of gestation, no earlier. This means that after this point, it may have the ability to feel pain... and before this point, it does not.

So I would argue that those 1/3 of abortions performed before 8.5 weeks are arguably ok in sikhi, because it does not induce pain for the fetus.

Well I agree with the point of the poll, but its worded kinda weird.

Is Bhangra a part of sikhi? no

Is Bhangra against sikhi? I'd argue no as well

Its the classic culture vs. religion debate... sikhi as a religion is separate from the punjabi lifestyle culture. And in many ways, its the total opposite with the high rates of alcoholism, female fetocide, and stuff that is present in the "punjabi/desi culture".

But just as "dhaal and roti" are cultural things that aren't against sikhi, I suspect that different forms of dance, such as bhangra, are ok within a certain context.

The problem is that you likely renamed all the files to the RAR type which hid the filetype. What you do is open up the folder that they are in (or any folder), goto Tools --> Folder options (If you are using vista, press the Alt Key to see the menu).

Under view/advanced options (one of the tabs above) there is a checkbox for "hide extentions for known file types". Unselect this box and hit ok. You should be able to see all of the extentions to change them back to the way they were by selecting each file and pressing F2 (or rename). You can go back and select the check box when you are done.

Questioning everything is not a bad thing. Read any sakhi...

    1. Guru Does something

    2. Someone asks why

    3. We learn and become better people.

That's why we are sikhs... students... not blind followers of random sants who tell us do this or go to hell!!!

Its because of the brown mentality that if something is more expensive, then it must be better. Since milk was considered "very special" in good old india, and expensive, using milk signified having more respect, because obviously the more expensive thing must be better.

I await the day when we move up from milk --> dehi --> ice cream.

    Gurbani provides a definition:

Satgur bina hor kachee hai bani

That basically means that without reference to God, all other songs/writing (bani) is false (kachee).

An interesting point V brought up: our own Guru Nanak displayed this when it came time... the hindus wanted to bury him, the muslims wanted to burn him. His response even after death: IT DOESNT MATTER!

So whether you throw it in the garbage (to be buried) or keep it and burn it (cremate it), it makes no difference. Just do what you think you are comfortable with.
