  1. Waheguroo jee ka Khalsa! Waheguroo jee kee Fateh! You can't be "half-sikh". Nor can you be sikh by birth. If we don't figure that out, how can we expect others to? Waheguroo jee ka Khalsa! Waheguroo jee kee Fateh!
  2. Waheguroo jee ka Khalsa! Waheguroo jee kee Fateh! I say too young.... sikhi is a personal choice, and any kid of 6 who is told to take amrit probably will, but that's still not the child's choice. IMHO, the only thing worse than not taking amrit is taking it then backing out later. Wait until the child has a grasp of what they are getting into before taking amrit. Sometime in their teens? Waheguroo jee ka Khalsa! Waheguroo jee kee Fateh!
  3. Waheguroo jee ka Khalsa! Waheguroo jee kee Fateh! ohh, the irony... Waheguroo jee ka Khalsa! Waheguroo jee kee Fateh!
  4. Waheguroo jee ka Khalsa! Waheguroo jee kee Fateh! Wow.. you dug up this old post from way back in 2005!! lol. But your points are absolutely correct. Science and religion are complimentary aspects trying to describe the same reality. The difference is, science describes based on our current state of knowledge: so of course it does change. But just because relativity is found, doesn't make the theory of gravity wrong. Science is about constant revision while remaining like justice: blind to outside influence. A lot of the "stuff" that was posted before about bridges between earth and raam and stuff... none of that is derived from SGGS jee, so I don't even know why its brought up here. It's just a sign of ignorance believing random pieces of gibberish without taking a deeper look into what's being said and by whom. Like honestly, thing NASA is finding remenants of bridges on earth? They're a SPACE organization hahahaha. Waheguroo jee ka Khalsa! Waheguroo jee kee Fateh!
  5. Waheguroo jee ka Khalsa! Waheguroo jee kee Fateh! ...and its not the police, its the army reserve. Waheguroo jee ka Khalsa! Waheguroo jee kee Fateh!
  6. Waheguroo jee ka Khalsa! Waheguroo jee kee Fateh! It looks like it didn't install correctly. What I would do, is go into your C:\Windows\fonts folder (this is where all the fonts are located) and copy whatever fonts you want your friend to have. (copy it onto a USB key, CD, or just email it). Then on their computer, put it into their C:\Windows\fonts folder. It will show that it is installing each font. Once that is done, restart your program, and it should work. Waheguroo jee ka Khalsa! Waheguroo jee kee Fateh!
  7. Waheguroo jee ka Khalsa! Waheguroo jee kee Fateh! I don't understand what the fuss is about. If she doesn't want Kaur in her name, and would prefer her caste, then OBVIOUSLY she is not sikh, but hindu, so let her know that that's her choice, and don't fill out the "minority" form. We gotta get out of this mindset that people born into sikh families are sikh.. they are NOT! You have to actively seek (no pun intended) sikhi, not have it bestowed upon you at birth. A related question then: do you think that Singh and Kaur should be reserved for those AFTER taking amrit, like the original punj? Waheguroo jee ka Khalsa! Waheguroo jee kee Fateh!
  8. Waheguroo jee ka Khalsa! Waheguroo jee kee Fateh! A kara has a lot of symbolic value: if you respect the symbolism, i would strongly suggest wearing one! Waheguroo jee ka Khalsa! Waheguroo jee kee Fateh!
  9. Waheguroo jee ka Khalsa! Waheguroo jee kee Fateh! Maybe someone can correct me, but I believe Guru Gobind Singh (before he was guru) used to delay his rehraas sahib (and that of his family, including Guru Teg Bahadur jee) 1-2 hours as he used to play outdoors. I think the important thing is to do it "in the evening" in other words sometime after work and before sleep. So that time should be OK. Waheguroo jee ka Khalsa! Waheguroo jee kee Fateh!
  10. Waheguroo jee ka Khalsa! Waheguroo jee kee Fateh! Well you seem to have a very intelligent view on that. I agree with your post (4 posts up), in that a lot of what occurs is a direct result of our actions. Now let me tell you about a little secret called "probability theory" When you do an action, potentially there are an infinite number of results. THEORETICALLY anything can happen to anyone at anytime. However out of the billions of possibilities, only a handful are regularly chosen based on probability. So if I run a red light, maybe i hit someone, maybe i don't, maybe i get a ticket, maybe i goto jail, but I don't turn into a frog. I consider this because these are God's laws at work. Out of the possibly billions of outcomes, only a few are "possible". Now this is an example where God literally helps choose my options... indirectly. I feel that much of what we see and choose operates like that. So we perceive everything as our own actions but in reality, its only possible because of the natural laws that exist. In fact, the goal of physics since Newton has been to discover a universal law, a single universal theory that describes all matter/energy/forces in the universe. It seems like they are well on their way. Matter and energy have been found to be the same thing. Energy (electricity) has been found to be a product of magnetism. Gravity is a result of exchanging particles (matter). Slowly we will discover that the entire universe operates under a single theory... a single law. And so I leave to you to answer, every law/equation has a constant... when we find that universal law, who set that constant? For even if the constant were 1/trillion different, the universe would not exist in its present form. Waheguroo jee ka Khalsa! Waheguroo jee kee Fateh!
  11. Waheguroo jee ka Khalsa! Waheguroo jee kee Fateh! The whole point of sikhi is that we can follow God WITHOUT having to resort to dirty tactics. All the corruption and "forced" conversions by other faiths set the foundations of sikhi to begin with! Waheguroo jee ka Khalsa! Waheguroo jee kee Fateh!
  12. Waheguroo jee ka Khalsa! Waheguroo jee kee Fateh! There are two answers: either look deeper, or walk away. Both are honest options. I would recommend some reading, books like "god's debris" by scott addams that try to bridge between athiest and faith. But at the end of the day, its your choice. But be honest to yourself, pick one, and stand by it  Waheguroo jee ka Khalsa! Waheguroo jee kee Fateh!
  13. Waheguroo jee ka Khalsa! Waheguroo jee kee Fateh! Amrit is only the start of the journey... as long as you think that you are up for the challenge, then I say go for it! Waheguroo jee ka Khalsa! Waheguroo jee kee Fateh!
  14. Waheguroo jee ka Khalsa! Waheguroo jee kee Fateh! :TH: Waheguroo jee ka Khalsa! Waheguroo jee kee Fateh!
  15. Waheguroo jee ka Khalsa! Waheguroo jee kee Fateh! That's an interesting question you pose. I think that the concept of Sikhi as a religion is someone recent... originally with Guru Nanak, those that followed him maintained that they were good Hindus or Muslims, but at the same time were 'students' of Guru Nanak. As Guru Nanak said, if you're a hindu, be a good hindu, if you are muslim, be a good muslim. And so the understanding at the time was that people may be of whatever religion they choose, its just that no one is following the "truth" of their religion correctly. And so Guru Nanak was the teacher to reestablish to his students the proper way of following religion. In that way, organized religion is about going to "church" on sundays, calling yourself a particular faith, following rituals that are prescribed in that faith. Sikhism says outright that all of that are irrelevant for a path to God. Sunday is no more holy than Monday. Rituals bring you farther away. You can call yourself whatever faith you want, it doesn't change who you are. Waheguroo jee ka Khalsa! Waheguroo jee kee Fateh!
  16. Waheguroo jee ka Khalsa! Waheguroo jee kee Fateh! What you are asking sounds like 2 different software. For me, I use Messer http://www.snapfiles.com/get/messer.html for recording directly to mp3. This small program also has volume levels that allow you to adjust the volume to prevent clipping, and has excellent quality in my use during samagam recording. (this program is free) For editing/effects, I would recommend Sony Soundforge (costs $$$) or Audacity http://audacity.sourceforge.net (this program is free) Both can record and save as mp3 as well, however not directly to mp3. (in other words, you record, click stop, then go Save As... and then it takes a minute to save) Waheguroo jee ka Khalsa! Waheguroo jee kee Fateh!
  17. Meat, sikhi, and common sense http://khalsa4ever.blogspot.com/2007/03/me...mmon-sense.html One of the topics that I hear a lot from sikh youth these days questions the concept of meat. There are a few general questions that always come up: Why can't we eat meat? Plants are living too, why can we eat them? What about eggs? What about fish? Insects? Mushrooms? The problem is, that a lot of us don't understand the fundamental concepts behind sikhi, and so we don't understand how and why our rehat is important. I myself, have started by following what I was taught, and worked backwords to try to understand some of the reasons behind it. Here are my thoughts: So why can't we eat meat? As raj_karega_khalsa put it: "We dont refrain from eating meat for 'non-violent' reasons or something or because something is being killed. We refrain from eating meat for merciful reasons." Its wrong to cause pain. Simple. As much as we can try, all animals suffer when they are put down, especially in our modern slaughter house facilities. The halal preparation of meat is especially prone to causing pain. Killing a cow is just as bad as a chicken, a pig, or anything else that we term as "edible". So the answer is simple: As a vegetarian, I don't eat anything with a nervous system. Why? Because the nervous system allows an animal/person to feel pain. Its the beginnings of consciousness. So cows? They can feel pain. Insects? They can feel pain too. Fish? Same thing. Celery? No nervous system, so bring it on! This is important also because fungi, which are evolutionarily closer to animals than plants, are usually considered a vegetarian product for this very same reason. But can't plants feel pain? Plants can react to stimuli (like light, heat, etc.), but they can't feel pain, because they don't have nerves (which pick up pain signals) or a 'brain' (that can process those signals). Others reasons that people give for vegetarianism, saying that fruits and vegetables can regenerate are simply not true as things like carrots, yams, radishes, when eaten, destroy the plant. So again, its a common-sense model of sikhi: mercy is a fundamental concept that is enshrined in sikhi, from our concept of vegetarianism to our kirpan which means literally "to allow mercy".
  18. Waheguroo jee ka Khalsa! Waheguroo jee kee Fateh! <sarcasm> Well isn't it obvious? We let em die. </sarcasm> Waheguroo jee ka Khalsa! Waheguroo jee kee Fateh!

    In Love

Waheguroo jee ka Khalsa! Waheguroo jee kee Fateh! If you feel that your feelings are real, take it to the next level. Ask her what she thinks... if her feelings are similar, you may want to consider a marriage! Waheguroo jee ka Khalsa! Waheguroo jee kee Fateh!
  22. Waheguroo jee ka Khalsa! Waheguroo jee kee Fateh! I know your position: I'm 24 right now, and just about to start Medicine (MD). And I'm still single with no one on the horizon either haha. I say go for it, if you're worried about someone thinking "he's still doing his degree" dont forget that doing your degree with help, really really help, in helping out in your life in the future. People would rather marry someone who has a plan for their life than a person who doesn't have a degree at all. Just my thoughts. Waheguroo jee ka Khalsa! Waheguroo jee kee Fateh!
  23. Waheguroo jee ka Khalsa! Waheguroo jee kee Fateh! It doesn't matter what we MEAN... its what we SAY that people quote us on. This entire debacle is completely our fault. We allow people to get up and say stuff like that, and then we stay quiet when they say it. What does the media think? They didn't "invent" any thing, they didn't make up the footage, they didn't create those floats, and they certainly didn't wander over there without being invited by the community. If we were smart enough, we would clean up our act before inviting the media, because when they are there, they are going to report on what they see. If they see khalistan banners, pictures of guns and members of BKI (a terrorist organization in canada), what conclusion are they going to draw? What difference are we in comparison to the footage that they get from palistine? What else CAN they say? Its up to US to fix this problem. Or at least don't invite every politician and media personality you can think of until the problem is solved. Waheguroo jee ka Khalsa! Waheguroo jee kee Fateh!
  24. Waheguroo jee ka Khalsa! Waheguroo jee kee Fateh! The fact that we SING keertan is because we think that having a tune, maybe a catchy tune, will keep us singing it all the time. If this helps to promote that, then we can't complain. Waheguroo jee ka Khalsa! Waheguroo jee kee Fateh!
  25. Waheguroo jee ka Khalsa! Waheguroo jee kee Fateh! Another way I look at it is that we each have responsibility for deriving our own paths, but within the confines of the limitations set out by akal purakh. Like in this universe, there are certain laws and orders that exist, and among those finite choices, we choose our individual paths. Like the example I give is with Guru Nanak and the "pandits" who were trying to give water to their ancestors by facing the sun... and then Guru Nanak mocked them by facing the other direction to water his fields in punjab. (The end quote: If this water cannot reach my fields, only a few hundred miles away, how can it reach the sun, that is millions?). The water could move a certain amount. But within the laws of physics that was set during the creation of the universe, watering fields or ancestors is not among the finite choices. Waheguroo jee ka Khalsa! Waheguroo jee kee Fateh!
