    Help

run your fingers through your hair lightly to undo all the knots before you comb it.
  2. it's a tool to help you focus, but you don't have to use it. just say or repeat mentally the mantr once (or more times if you want, do the same # repetitions per bead), then move the mala forward by one bead. if the mind wanders and you didn't concentrate, then don't move it forward. it is also to help ensure consistency. if we use a mala then we know we did 1 mala of mool mantr, for example. if we just guess then it will probably be a lot less b/c the mind is tricky like that. it's easiest when held between the two front fingers, the forefinger and index finger.
  3. one of the best books on this topic, imo. also, probably the best book to use if you want to convince someone who refuses to accept sikh sources b/c they think sikh sources are ''bias''. which is kind of funny, b/c they wouldn't think a white person commenting on western culture or history or politics is bias... hmmmm..... people need to reexamine their unconscious prejudices
  4. could he give a detailed explanation of just what happened between nihangs and sgpc during the time of the gurdwara reform movement and afterwards? i've also heard that sgpc tried to grab gurdwaras from non-nihang mahapurkhs. could he go into that? did bhai kartar singh jhabbar have any role in any of this?
  5. you can do it any time. any paath can be done during periods. the best time to do sukhmani sahib is when its quiet and the mind is naturally focused. for most people its the morning and evening time. morning may be better as sometimes things come up during the day which might interfere.
  6. it sounds like you seek the approval and understanding of your parents, and that the lack of approval and understanding is causing a lot of pain. From personal experience I can tell you that despite it being logical and right, the people we care about sometimes will not see/understand or neccessarily have the capability of being compassionate with our issues/challenges. Sometimes you have to just let go of seeking that approval from them and live your own life. this is a source of power in and of itself. The next thing is are you sure you want to do this course? Doing something we find interesting for its own sake can help motivate us, but doing something that we think we should do b/c parents/society expect it can lead to burn out. If you are sure you are interested perhaps you should brush up on study skills etc. The books sold from the study hacks blog should help, but the time to read up on that would be after august as you are better of studying now. Also, maybe try looking at your situation from a distance. What is the worst thing that can happen? what will be the consequences of this worst thing happening? Can you be ok with that? Will it prevent you from getting the job that you want, or will it just delay it for a year or so? Will this worst thing ruin your life forever? Or just mean that you'll feel embarassed and have to repeat a year? When we look at things this way we see that we often catastrophize things in our minds, that they really aren't as bad or as final as our minds make them. I know a person who messed around during high school and wasted his time. He had to take a longer route to get into the program that he wanted but now is one of the highest earning people that I know and also loves his job.
  7. i like to add water in small amounts as i'm making it. this way the water gets absorbed before new needs to be added. maybe practice with smaller amounts next time, like just a karsheeful of ghee, atta, sugar
  8. you don't have to get pesh. but i recommend that you write down everything you eat during the day. you may find that on days you eat junk food/ acidic food/ sugary stuff/cha/coffee that on that day and the next kaam is way worse. when it attacks you too much stop eating, maybe switch to just fruits and water. channel that energy into school, working out, art, naam japp - keep yourself busy. go hang out with clean minded people. take some classes on sikhi at your local gurmat prachar centre.

    Prayer?

on youtube look up bhai jarnail singh chaupai sahib etc and you'll find english translations of the banis. once you take amrit you cannot substitute other banis/ardass for japji, the minimum is as stated by tuhintuhin, but you can add on more banian if you want. the formal ardass is meant to be done after the morning banis and after rehiras as well. it's also smart to do a small prayer *anyting you want( after anytime we do meditation/paath. you can do chaupai sahib anytime. you can also listen to banian anytime on ipod or in the car etc. happy for you that you're taking steps on this path.
  10. do ardass everyday for bhukh (hunger) for naam. akha jeeva visray marr jao, akhaan okhaa sacha nao, sachay naam ki lagay bhukh, uth bhukay khai chaleeayhay dukh try going to gurdwara sahib everyday so you can be present during the ardass and add your own ardass inthere. also, amritvela simran at gurdwara. go to that. it makes a huge difference. try it very seriously for a week and see what happens.
  11. Baba Nand Singh ji did not wear a kirpan either. They both took amrit though. If you want to debate on a particular sant with others you can start a new thread. this thread is for people who are looking for an advanced soul to help them progress on this path.
  12. Baba Baldev Singh ji balandpuri are in UK doing katha in Walsal from the 14th to June 1st. His katha is heavily focused on Naam and he gives very clear descriptions of Gurmat from a spiritual point of view. PM me if you need the address of the gurdwara.
  13. how can you expect to recover from feeling depressed when you have left the very thing that gives you chardikala? You've left bani b/c of a little worldly disappointment. The more paath you do, the more sangat you do, the more chardi kala (high spirited) you'll feel.
  14. What time do you go to sleep? You're eating dinner pretty late at night. I find that sleeping late is the biggest obstacle to getting up early, followed by eating a heavy meal late at night. If you fix these two things you can probably do it. Your schedule seems pretty busy, but by tweaking it here and there you can make it work for you. For example, you can listen to Rehras Sahib in the car and eat dinner right when you get home. This gives more time to digest your food. And try getting to bed around 10 or 10:30. Then you'll have 6 hours of sleep if you wake up at 4 am. You can also nap after your amritvela. Also, you may find that sitting down and doing 10 or 20 minutes of simran during the day on your breaks will really help with your energy. just set an alarm in case you fall asleep.
  15. a number of gurmukhs regularly visit western countries to do prachaar. i think kam and neo will know better who goes to the uk.
  16. bhaji, i admire your zeal. when we don't do kirt kamai whoever pays for our food, shelter, and clothing takes away a lot of our kamai. additionally, it is easier to be independant and feel secure standing on your own two feet when you don't need to rely on anyone else for support. also, a radio station costs money. if you really are interested in this route of seva than i suggest setting up a routine for yourself. without a regular job, setting up a routine is very difficult. you can work and in your spare time do your radio seva. i would also suggest that rather than giving away free radios you could sell them at cost and maybe if you can find a way that the radio will only stay on your gurmat channel that could prevent people from getting cheap radios for dhaniabi music. keep asking God everyday for bhukh (hunger) for naam and for amritvela simran. over time this hunger will become great and you'll find it easier to awake for amritvela. i recommend trying to sleep earlier. and experiment with different times for waking up - sometimes the body and mind find it easier to awake at earlier/different times rather than the ones we first try. as for your parents, the easiest way to change others is to change ourselves. just be respectful of them and focus on your jeevan and seva. they will likely begin to respect your choices once they say the fruits of your seva and simran beginning to bloom.
  17. God doesn't put people through divorce. marriage, like all worldly relationships, involves a give and take of karams from previous janams. once this give and take is complete, much of the glue that holds a relationship together is gone. in the past, imo, people evolved spiritually more slowly. now spiritual evolution / give and take of karma is happening much faster and so you have relationships fall apart sooner. the couple could, of course, opt to move from karam into dharam and help each other live a higher way of life. but some just don't do that so they divorce.
  18. Nagar Kirtans were begun by the sixth Guru ji. This was during a time when the worldly emperors would take out processions. As the Sixth Guru was introducing the concept of temporal authority to the sangat, the nagar kirtan was a part of this process of honouring Guru ji as a spiritual and temporal Lord. Really what it comes down to for the individual is what you choose to focus on. You can go to the Gurdwara and waste time in the nindya, the politics, the food, the socialising, or you can focus on Naam. The same thing goes with the nagar kirtans. Although I do agree that a lot of the gandh that people try to bring into the nagar kirtans should be removed/blocked by the organising committees.
  19. try to stay strong in your amritvela and your meditation. you can't change others so don't be too attached to expectations. but once you have changed yourself a great deal they may become inspired to change. listen to katha and read jeevanis of great sikhs to remain inspired.

    Sanjog

marriage is basically a union where you pay your debts. souls owe each other from their past lives so in this life they meet as family members or friends or in a rishta to pay off those debts. i believe that there are multiple possible karmic matches in each janam, but b/c some are too young, too old, already married etc those don't happen. so you end up marrying one of the karmic matches. there is no such thing as soulmate, as in each janam your spouse can be a different soul. the only mate of the soul is god.
  21. When someone who doesn't have a valid Gurmat based stance wants to create change they often misrepresent the issue. Here they are saying the floor is washed with milk, when it's actually washed with kachi lassi, and then they are saying that it's like washing the floors with semen, when there is no ling being pooja'd anywhere. retards of course jump on board and start doing kintoo as well. what are the floors supposed to be washed with??? what sevadars are using is actually a natural solvent that breaks down grime. if industrial cleaners were used they would eventually change the ph of the jal in the sarover, harm the natural fauna, and cause skin damage to sangat who do ishnaan there. not to mention the fact that the fumes from industrial cleaners cause damage to brain cells. Of course, the missionaries probably see doing ishnaan as manmat anyway and i guess the fish in the sarover can be used to feed people
  22. Actually, despite the lack of forest cover the movement gained a lot of ground. The turning point against the movement happened when the kharkoos convinced the Punjab populace to boycott the elections. Baba Thakur Singh ji Bhindrenvale told people to take part in the elections b/c a boycott would set the movement back by a huge amount. The kharkoos and the people ignored the bachans of a bhramgyani. Thinking they knew better they boycotted the elections and Congress was elected. The election of Congress turned the tide against the Khalsa b/c of all their low tactics.
