  1. Please excuse my ignorance. I just learned that pauri number 1 starts is ''socha soch na....'' and not mul mantur. I remember reading othewise somewhere else. Sorry about that.
  2. "is there any difference between doing paath( the 5 banis) and simran" A giani told me that the 5 banis are like the runway and simran is like flight. The goal is to stay in flight as much as possible. However, every plane must come down to the runway to refuel etc. Having a runway to land on is kind of like protection, and enables you to do more simran than if you didn't. Sorry if that's not too clear the way I explained it.
  3. oh, that first laughing guy is a typo, the other 2 are not.
  4. Actually, some of the radhaswami type groups that split off from them are doing prachaar in the west. They teach that you NEED a human guru and that initiations like Amrit are a religious ritual. They don't adopt the Sikh saroop and teach for people to just do X amount of simran a day using their mantur and to leave a clean lifestyle. A lot of it is very similar to Sikhe other than what I wrote above. They teach that they are not a religion, simply a spiritual path and that people of any religion can be initiated by their guru or by his representatives. It's actually very clever and underhanded how they manipulate people. They teach to respect all religions on the one hand, and that those religions follow empty rituals on the other. You can find some of their advertisements in the back of certain free left wing type magazines
  5. I wasn't a singh in high school so I never had to deal with this. What if you just wore a shorter gatra so it won't stick out from under your shirt and tie a kamarkasa type thing over it? Like one of those back support belts with velcro on it. That way nobody will see it, even by accident. Or maybe try wearing a snug undershirt with the kirpan underneath.
  6. I find reading something inspiring before sitting down to do simran would really help. Read Gurbani (or an english translation) or Sikh history and learn about the shaheeds and all that they sacrificed. Or read Sant jeevans. Getting into simran is tough. But keep in mind that your mind has been repeating worldly stuff in itself for a long time. You trained it to do that. Now you are trying to switch to simran and it's resisting. I guess you trained it pretty well. What this means is that once your mind starts to get into the simran and further from the worldly stuff it's going to be a lot easier for you to do simran, so it's a positive thing. Kind of like how when you're riding your bike and the tires slip into some grooves in the dirt. It's very easy to move along those grooves, but much more difficult to get out! One thing that I found really worked well is to go for a walk and say waheguru when the foot comes down or some similar method. I found it easier to concentrate than when sitting down b/c walking was my mala and it involved my whole body. Make sure you get regular satsangat. It will happen if you keep trying. It just takes time so no need to get frustrated.
  7. very nice, however, the mul mantra is pauri number 1, not zero. /
  8. nice. but is mul mantur pauri number 0, or pauri number one? I would say it is number 1.
  9. It`s not that hard. Take a sandwich or a bagel. When I needed a quick snack at uni I would take a tortilla (you know, one of those roti-type things they sell at the grocery store) and put all sorts of different cut up veggies on it. Then some mustard and cayenne pepper. It tasted awesome and I ate it everyday for a month or more straight. My favorite was with onion, yellow and red bell pepper, tomato, cucumber, and strips of cheese off of those low fat cheese blocks. few people talked to me bécause of my breath but it was worth it. believe me, it`s not as hard as it seems at first. you get used to not eating meat. if you want to go all the way vegetarian and find that the cravings for meat are too bad, wean yourself off of them by eating fake meat (you know, flavored tofu). If you`re going to buy food just buy a subway veggie sub.
  10. I used to do this banee during the day according to the instructions given to baba Harnam Singh ji in Se Kinehya. I later met with a Sant who told me that I wasn't strong enough to do it during the day and that the ONLY time I should do this banee is in the Amrit Vela. I'm just posting this so people know to only do it in the Amrit Vela unless absolutely sure its ok to do otherwise.
  11. There was allways an inititiation into the Sikh path. Before khanda batey da amrit there was charn pahul ki amrit. This is written in the Vaarn of Bhai Gurdas Ji which is also considered Gurbani by the Gurus. Guru Gobind Singh Ji merely changed the form of this initiation in 1699. Also, if someone considers the Guru Granth Sahib as their Guru (which is essentially the Gurus in another saroop) then they must also accept all other sayings/teachings of the Gurus outside of the Guru Granth Sahib as hukum to be followed. That is if they REALLY accept the Guru Granth Sahib as their Guru. This means accepting Khalsa Panth as Guru as well as khanda battey da amrit  Of course, it's up to people how much they want to accept or follow. But just because they choose to not believe in something doesn't meant that they are correct.
  12. Yeah, I agree. Be a chela of the GURU ONLY. But seeking advice and direction from a seeker who is more advanced than yourself and whose job it is to help you get closer to the Guru (aka a TRUE sant as defined in Gurbani) is a smart idea. Also, sangat with these people is good. doing simran with a mahapurkh has huge benefits. As we grow in spiritual level we'll be able to fathom deeper and deeper meanings from Gurbani. Many high saints are able to teach us these deeper meanings through their katha. one thing i read. A mahapurkh is like an electrician. they make sure that the wiring connecting the Sikh to the Guru(the powerhouse) is set up properly. But they themselves are not the power house. This is from saint-scholar naranjun singh's katha. How do we know if somone's a real saint and how do we know we can trust them? same as with most other people, reputation among the sikh community and just getting to know them and deciding for yourself. Use Gurbani as the touchstone. Is what this person saying true? well, you can compare their teachings with the teachings of Gurbani and accepted uchae avastha sikhs to see if they are in line. bhul chuk maaf.
  13. Drinking is a kurhait (sorry bout the spelling). If a Sikh drinks then according to the rehat maryada they are considered a patit (apostate). In other words, a non-Sikh.
  14. Think of it this way: To cross the world ocean and reach the shores of God-realization we need to ride across in a ship. Naam is that ship. Think of the path of Kundalini Yoga as another ship. If you put one foot in one ship, and the other foot in the other ship, you will drown. Sikhi marg and kundalini yoga marg are different. Another difference: To open the dasam dwar Sikhi relies on God's Grace. Kundalini yoga uses force, which could be dangerous.
  15. MKhalsa, could you please give me the page number of this qoute? "Read Baba Harnaam Singh Ji's biography. He clearly tells that when Naam Simran will help a person for sure in this world, but to create relations with Guru Ji to have him help you in the next world (the ultimate motive of doing naam simran) you need to be amritthari, i.e. naam simran only bears full fruits when you are doing it after Guru Ji has instilled that naam in you. Moreover, he also writes that to get our naam/gurbani abhiyaas parvan on his dar we have to do ardas. There was a person named Bh. Onkar Singh Ji from Sri Amritsar (I believe) who asked Baba Ji to do ardas for him and in return Baba Ji asked him how to address him in the ardas? Baba Ji said ardas is only accepted of sevaks or Sikhs. It's very hard to become a sevak of Guru Ji. You have to give your tan/man/dhan to him. And Bh. Onkar Singh Ji was not at that stage yet and since he was not even amritthari, Baba Ji said he could not do ardas for him. There are many other places where he says that one who is not amritthari can go on and do naam abhiyas as much as he can, but he will not be able to gain parsantaa of Guru Ji." ------- Simran is just remembrance of God. So if you're reading bani that is simran just like going "waheguru waheguru waheguru". I personally believe that any remembrance of God is beneficial. However, to get full benefit we need to get khanday de pahul, which gives us Gurmantur. Gurmantur is Waheguru, however, this can only be 'instilled' in us by the panj pyare. So we can do simran of 'waheguru' (a word that is a name of God) before getting amrit chuk, but it won't ha ve the same amount of benefit as after getting amrit chuk when it becomes Gurmantur (more benefit than other names of God). This is backed up by Bhai Gurdass Ji's Vaars (sorry, don't know which one). I've also heard from learned persons that bani is more beneficial before getting amrit chuk than Waheguru simran, although i do both. Would like to hear more learned opinions on this one. Another interesting point: we already have naam and amrit inside of us. But it's 'locked' in and we need khanday de pahul to allow it to blossom. Bhul chuk maaf.
  16. why are you guys currently not broadcasting?
  17. Sant Jarnail Singh was NOT an agent of Congress. However, I believe that he did try to work with them. So basically, he went into politics for the betterment of sikhs. Later on, he bacame convinced that they were playing games and refused to trust them (not saying that he did in the first place). Bhul chuk maaf.

  20. There are numerous organisations out there posing as pro-panthic but in reality they are working to weaken the integrity of Sikhi. These groups are very clever and it is sometimes difficult to determine if a particular website/group is anti-panthic. The price of security, especially for a minority group under threat, is constant vigilance. We Sikhs must endeavor to remain politically aware. This is a list from Khalsa alliance (http://www.khalsaalliance.org/index.ppa?pagename=alerts) of antipanthic groups: Links on Organizations, institutions harming Panthic interests. 22. I've also heard that you should keep your eyes focused on the Amrit batta as the kirpan stirs the Amrit. I've also heard to keep looking at the panj's eyes. not sure which one. Also, don't wash off the Amrit for AT LEAST 24 HOURS afterwards. I met a sant who said he didn't wash it off for over two weeks!! (or something to that effect).
  23. Is being taught Saas Giras simran by the Panj Pyare the same thing as Naam Drirh? If not, what's the difference?
